Target Marks Down LEGO Batman, Others; Best Buy has $30 Xbox Live Cards

Video GamesCHEAPERWaiting a very, very long time after the holidays, the big red dot finally marked down a number of software titles. Prices and selection vary by store, but PS3 and Xbox 360 titles may include (from what we've seen) Fracture, LEGO Batman, and Mercenaries. Prices are generally around 30% off right now, we'll be holding off to get Batman on the cheap.

We also went to Best Buy yesterday to buy one of the $29.99 Xbox Live 12+1 Month Gold Cards. They had plenty. Online, they're sold out, so consider going to Best Buy if you need to renew anytime soon. (It's normally $50.)

G.I. Joe Hall of Heroes Pre-Orders, Hi-Res Pictures

G.I. JoeRepaint, Repackage, RecycleVoted on by fans in early 2007, this new G.I. Joe Hall of Heroes Collection proves that fans have terrible, terrible taste. This new assortment features premium deco and packaging, which is a nice way of saying "this is going to be a lot more expensive than the version you bought last year." Each figure seems to be improved over previous releases, with retooled hands and a chrome face on the Cobra Viper, bare shoulders on Storm Shadow, and two shotguns with the revised Flint. Basically, the figures are just enough better to make you mad. Click the pic to pre-order at our sponsor, or click here for hi-res shots elsewhere.

R-Type Dimensions Released for Xbox 360

Xbox Live ArcadeR-Type!The astonishingly difficult R-Type Dimensions is expensive, insanely difficult, and rather neat. Given the going rate of most disc-based games, 1200 points (US $15) seems too expensive for the game, but we will say we enjoy playing it. It's quite difficult, and it includes ports of the first two R-Type games with fancy graphical face lifts. The button layout is obnoxious, but it's extremely fun. Just prepare yourself for lots of yelling.

Transformers News Round-Up

TransformersHot ShotChinese site TF08.net has a gallery of Universe Hot Shot, which should be shipping very soon. It's looking to be even better than expected, plus it still has the "JAAM" license plate.

Over at ACToys.net is a gallery showing the first-ever shots of Animated Activators Soundwave. You're welcome. It looks pretty neat.

Shots of the unlicensed-but-net WST Blaster are making the rounds. It looks like it'll be about the same size as Soundwave, give or take.

Reports from around the web indicate that Universe and Animated deluxe toys are starting to see their prices increased from $8-$10 to $11-$13 at some US Target and Wal-Mart stores. You may wish to do some price comparing before buying those more common toys as that may be a lot of money to pay that you don't necessarily want to shell out.

If you haven't seen it, check out the Blue Alternity Megatron popping up in Japan at Maruzen-Toy. It's not bad, although it seems that Megatron heads are difficult for Takara-Tomy to crank out these days.

Mattel Gets Ghostbusters

GhostbustersWOWIf you grew up in the post-Star Wars era, odds are you have more than a passing interest in the Ghostbusters franchise. There have never, ever been movie-based toys of the four main heroes, but it seems Mattel will be righting this wrong this year with a direct-to-consumer line of 12- and 6-inch figures. Since we aren't going to be in New York until later, we're going to send you to Dread Central to check out their three pages of pictures of prototypes. Figures shown include Slimer, Egon, and Ray. We're all very pleased with what we see so far.

MST3K DVD Vol. XIV Released

G.I. JoeNEWWe forgot to mention that Mystery Science Theater 3000 Volume 14 was released last week. It includes such winners as Soultaker and Final Justice. The best price we've been able to find locally is $44.99 at a Best Buy. This set does not have a special edition tin set with lobby cards and a figure.

Transformers News Round-Up

TransformersHot Shot52toys posted a gallery, but their server isn't working so we're going to send you to TFW2005 for their mirrored gallery of Hot Shot (2002) vs. Hot Shot (2009). Feel old yet? The new one is a little bit smaller.

Retail stores are now getting more shipments of Leo Prime and Inferno from Transformers Universe, which we have not seen in person at retail until this weekend. We need to buy Leo, we think.

There's going to be a toy named Wheelie in the new movie, but it doesn't look a lot like the Wheelie you know.

Wii Downloads This Week

WiiLITWii Ware this week has LIT. Apparently evil creatures have invaded a high school. Oh, and you have to rescue some girlfriend. This used to be more than enough to drive a video game, but for some reason, we're not feeling it.

Virtual Console fans, you have one title and the Sega Genesis game Wolf of the Battlefield: MERCS. It's somewhat sobering to see the Virtual Console's increasingly mundane release schedule which spans nearly 25 years of video gaming scraping the bottom of the virtual barrel after just 2 years of releases.

Pirated Pirates?

DisneyJohnIn the wake of the whole Pirates of the Caribbean movie series, we saw a whole mess of pirate toys based on the film and on general, license-free pirates. Playmobil in particular has been doing great business in pirates for years now, and just recently LEGO returned to the line after a nearly 10-year absence. However, what's most interesting are these (supposedly) new figures from Dragon Models which you can see at Hobby Bunker. These aren't licensed products, but damned if "John" doesn't look exactly like Captain Jack Sparrow. They've also got lookalikes for Will Turner and Captain Barbossa, leaving us to wonder just how close one can skirt to a licensed property with it still being A-OK. There's no master license on the very concept of swashbuckling pirates, but wow... you need to see these.

Wired Blog Reveals New Joe Toys

G.I. JoeNEWWhile the buzz has been going around for a while, it appears The GeekDad Blog got the first shots of many new Joe vehicles from the new movie. We use that loosely, as some won't be in the movie from what we hear, and one is obviously a repaint of a Valor vs. Venom-era mold (that's 2005). The figures are a mix of new parts and 25th anniversary bits and pieces, but the main point of interest is a new, movie-stylized Cobra Night Raven. Do check them out.

Movie Cobra Commander Revealed, We're Sorry Too

G.I. JoeNEWSpoilers be damned, this is the Internet in 2009. There's no escaping complaining, and that's why we're here-- to show you this Robot Heroes Cobra Commander. While we don't know if this is a transitional disguise, one of many outfits, or what, there's no reason we can't say we already hate it. Granted, it's no more or less goofy than several other figures, but the guy resembles Star Wars alien Pote Snitkin more than a little.

Also, we're now hearing the G.I. Joe game is trash. Given the movie's August release date, we smell a fresh roasted turkey, but there are elements of the toy line like the Night Raven that have a lot of potential to make fans of any age smile.

Toy Fair 2009 Review: Day 1

G.I. JoeBoinkWe uploaded 978 photos from the various booths we hit in New York City last week, and you can see them all here. There's a lot of toys here, and we're going to go through our favorites and insist you go look at them.

Today, we're going to take a look at the Pit playset from the upcoming G.I. Joe movie toy line. It'll be a mix of new and old molds from the film and beyond. The Pit is inspired by the film, the comics, and elsewhere-- and it includes a tiny ping pong table. That's the good news. The bad news is that it and other elements of this high-end playset are cardboard, which is cheap on various levels. Still, it's a nice detail, and you'll be able to get one of these in just a few months.

Street Fighter IV Released

Video GamesNEWLast week, Capcom released Street Fighter IV in the USA for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 game consoles-- it's about $60, give or take $5. It's also a supreme pain in the butt to play without an arcade stick, which is what we're doing right now in our cluttered offices. Hori, Mad Catz, and other manufacturer's arcade sticks are in very short supply, and while we've been able to find a few for the PS3, Xbox ones are basically not available at any price. Boo, hiss.

So how's the game? Lots of fun if you have someone to play against. The computer, even on simpleton difficulty, is extremely tough to beat all the way through. The regular opponents are easy, but the final boss, Seth, is cheap, tough, and a genuine challenge. It's rare that we experience a game that drives us to levels of blind fury, but Capcom seems to have nailed it here. Congratulations, Capcom.

Toy Fair 2009 Review: Day 2

DC DirectCatwomanWe uploaded 978 photos from the various booths we hit in New York City last week, and you can see them all here. There's a lot of toys here, and we're going to go through our favorites and insist you go look at them.

DC Direct had quite an impressive offering, made even more impressive given that they're competing with the popular and widely available Mattel figures of the same characters. They're doing some great high-end items, including some 1:2 scale busts including that of Catwoman. She's just as shiny as she looks in the pictures, the goggles look like an actual prop from some movie which nobody made, and it's just a generally stunning mixed media piece. Really, you won't see anything like this except for this. They're also going to crank out a Harley Quinn, and the Joker is another stunning piece. Expect her to be around $240.

Botcon Stuff Slowly Being Revealed

TransformersKup!There are going to be 5 figures in the Botcon boxed set this year, including the first-ever new Kup in years. The good news is that he has an original head sculpt. The bad news? It's on Cybertron Red Alert's body. Other figures in the set include Landshark, Flak, Thunderclash, and Scourge.

Also, registration information is live. It's $360 for the whole show and the boxed set, which isn't too awful, we guess? We're still considering going as it's close to our HQ.

Wii Downloads This Week

WiiLITWii Ware this week has Onslaught. It's a $10 first-person-shooter, which means it's a lot like other games you can get at Toys "R" Us which offer more and cost about the same. Reviews are mixed.

Virtual Console fans, it's time to welcome the Commodore 64. For $5 each, you can get Pitstop II, The Last Ninja, and International Karate. None of these are ringing any bells for us, either.
