Star Wars Review: Anakin Skywalker (Outlander Peasant Disguise 2021 Redux, The Vintage Collection)
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Anakin Skywalker (Outlander Peasant Disguise 2021 Redux, The Vintage Collection). Time is not always kind to reissues - he came up a little short back in 2011, and by today's standards doesn't look great. The poncho is much worse, the figure deco is slightly better, and the sculpting is still as good as it ever was. It's not an essential upgrade, but there are a few improvements that may interest you (as long as you keep the original 2011 poncho handy.) Read the whole review.

Transformers Shattered Glass Blaster Live
|
From Hasbro Pulse: Transformers Generations Shattered Glass Collection Autobot Blaster & IDWŐs Shattered Glass -- Blaster (Exclusive Hasbro Pulse Variant Cover). Based on fan club concepts, it's now a new, super-articulated toy set. It's also $41.99 (about $49 with shipping pre-tax) which makes it roughly $16 over the regular red mass-retail version, which is a really excellent toy set.
The set includes a red Rewind and a comic, and it seems US shipping caps out at around $6.99 - so try to order a lot of things together if you aren't a Pulse Premium payer.

Review: Hasbro Transformers Generations War for Cybertron Trilogy Selects Galvatron
|
Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
Toy colors (with stickers)! The Hasbro Transformers Generations War for Cybertron Trilogy Selects Galvatron a nifty-if-weird take on the Kingdom toy, as it includes a lot of stickers and a painted purple crown they want you to sticker over. (I refuse.) There's also a rubsign sticker, and we don't get those very often. So read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!

MiSTer FPGA Supports Nintendo Game & Watch
|
Via Pierco: Game & Watch Core. Before Nintendo had a Game Boy or Nintendo DS, they sold these one-game LCD portables in department stores - and they were neat for time time. This core can play most of Nintendo's games and even a few Konami LCD games, which should be pretty interesting for future preservation as these things start to age out of being functional. Nintendo has made a couple of new ones, but they're much fancier with LCD full-color screens running NES and in some cases other games.

Star Wars Review: R2-W50 (Droid Factory)
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: R2-W50 (Droid Factory). It's a figure painted to look sort of like the repaint of a castle at a theme park, except the droid is clear for some reason. It's a bizarre but distinctive looking figure, and arguably the kind of thing that's more interesting as a weird collectible toy than something from the Star Wars galaxy. Read the whole review.

Tomy's Big Giant Enterprise Crowdfunding Project
|
From Tomy: 1/350 Scale Star Trek Enterprise - Prestige Select Replica. It's impressively fancy. This $599.99 ship is 6% funded
The mostly metal, 20-pound, 34-inch-long ship is slightly smaller than Playmobil's ship but looks to have more electronics plus a rarely (never?) seen saucer separation function. The crowdfunding ends before Comic-Con - July 11, 2022 - so there's little to no chance of fans previewing a sample in-person before pledging for 1-3 units. It's worth noting the 3 tiers are 1, 2, or 3 ships at full price - no bulk discount.

Transformers J Balvintron 3-Pack On Sale
|
From The NTWRK: J Balvin Mash-Up, J Balvintron 3-Pack. It's yellow Soundwave with two tapes, based on the G1 molds, for $41.25 - which is pretty decent. By comparison, the last tape 2-packs at Walmart were about $20.
He doesn't have the same accessories as the original, but the deco is weird enough that it should appeal to a bunch of you. Maybe the price will drop some more, but don't count on it. It's probably worth the price for just the two tape buddies, as "new" 1984 mold characters are few and far between.

IEKA Makes Record Player for Fall 2022
|
From IEKA: How the record player by IKEA and Swedish House Mafia came to be. It's a big black brick with a tone arm and a turntable, so it looks like it would belong in a 1980s apartment shown in a movie.
I see no price at this time. I'm just amused that a record player seems to be produced now as it's still something of a niche product, but if it means more places sell records I'm all for it. Maybe IKEA can make its own NES in a few years. Or a CRT television.

New Lanard Predator Figures Coming to Walmart
|
From The Corps! Elite Fans HQ message boards: 2022 Predator Reveals. The line kicked off a couple of years ago as $10 6-inch figures, and it looks to be expanding a bit around August. I like the weird blue one.
These are more or less the heirs apparent to 1990s Kenner weirdness - fairly priced even when adjusted for inflation, and suitably weird enough to appeal to toy collectors of a certain age. More realistic figures can be had from other manufacturers, and this reminds me, I've still got one of these guys to open from the first wave.

New Lanard Alien Figures Also Coming to Walmart

From The Corps! Elite Fans HQ message boards: 2022 Alien Reveals. If that weren't enough, a neon green alien, a red/orange neon alien, and a gold alien are also on the way - also $10, also August, also Walmart in the USA.

Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Artoo-Deetoo (R2-D2, Droids, The Vintage Collection). Hasbro Reveals NERF Mascot Murph
|
Via Hasbro: HASBRO UNVEILS "MURPH," THE NERF BRAND'S FIRST-EVER OFFICIAL MASCOT. I got an email at about 4:00 PM Eastern on a Friday before a long weekend, which I assume means this was being dumped.
Hasbro says: "PAWTUCKET, RI - June 17, 2022 - Hasbro, Inc., a global play and entertainment company, officially unveils Murph, the NERF brand's first-ever official mascot. Made of NERF darts from head-to-toe, Murph is, by far, the most fun, playful and social member of the NERF team. Working with The Martin Agency to kick off an exciting brand campaign for NERF this summer 2022, Hasbro is putting Murph in the center of it all to drive the new brand mnemonic: Unleash the Play in You. "
For a suit that's a walking pile of NERF ammo, it's pretty nifty. I have no idea how, if, or when he'll play into marketing, or show up at a convention in costume, or become an action figure, but I can certainly hope that Hasbro's faceless answer to Gritty gets trotted out frequently and soon. And I would totally buy a 3 3/4-inch action figure of this weirdo, although I assume the paint budget would render it impossible.

New LEGO 90th Anniversary Sets
|
From LEGO: 10497 Galaxy Explorer. It's not the original 497 set from over four decades ago, but it's a remake in that style that's significantly bigger and at $99.99, potentially not a bad deal. I'm trying to not buy more LEGO sets as it's something of a slippery slope, but with the yellow windows plus blue and gray construction in a retro box, it pushes all the buttons.
Also coming is the 10305 Lion Knights' Castle, which is a $400 remake that should probably make classic Castle fans blush. The yellow box looks like what you may remember from the 1980s and it's loaded with figures and 4500 pieces. It's also, again, $400 - but if you haven't been spending money on actual vintage classic Castle sets, it's probably worth a look.
Also shown is a $150 LEGO Avatar 75574 Toruk Makto & Tree of Souls - and I can't say I see this as looking like a $150 set.

Disney Puts Indy Out Early
|
....or possibly on time, as the movie was originally supposed to be out around now. Via the Disney Parks Blog: New Indiana Jones Merchandise Uncovered at Disney Parks. No prices were given, but jackets, prop replicas, and at least one toy (pictured) were shown. Disney parks have sold all sorts of Indy merchandise for years, some of which was neat, some of which you missed and probably are just fine having skipped.
The new film is expected in 375 days with the requisite licensed toys expected from LEGO, Hasbro, and goodness knows what else in tow. If the previous movie Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is any indication, I expect a really hot first couple of months followed by a fabulous clearance run. Many if not all of the LEGO sets could be found at a steep discount eventually, and the first two waves of Hasbro action figures sat (thanks in part due to dubious quality issues which were corrected by wave 3.) Waves 3 and 4 of the figures were tough to find, practically online exclusives as stores stopped ordering due to the glut of unsold existing figures on the pegs. The movie did fine with older audiences and this one should do absolutely wonderful box office numbers.

Star Wars Review: Boba Fett (Morak, The Retro Collection)
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Boba Fett (Morak, The Retro Collection). This is one of my favorite figures in years - it incorporates elements of the 1979 Kenner figure, like his unique backpack design, while also modernizing it with an all-new but still appropriately retro helmet sculpt and coloring. If you're in your 40s - or maybe late 30s - this could be a fun throwback to put with your other childhood toys. I don't know if younger fans will flock to this one, but it hasn't left my general workspace since getting it nearly a month ago. I'd strongly recommend it if Kenner toys were ever on your wish list as a child. Read the whole review.

New 16-Bit Sega Controllers
|
From Retro-Bit: The Big6 Controller. It's the 1989 3-button "batarang" controller, but with a 6-button layout. Given that the kids of the 1980s (and 1990s) are in their 40s and 30s, this is the sort of thing that more companies should be doing for video games given what Rhino and other companies did for records, CDs, and jukeboxes for the mail-order catalog adults of the 1990s.
The retro port wired version is a surprisingly cheap $16.99, with USB at $19.99 and wireless (with dongles for USB and Genesis) for a decent $34.99. Seeing new clone consoles and new games has been exciting, but the thought of all-new (licensed, no less) controllers churning out is certainly interesting too. Here's hoping someone convinces Nintendo to put out some new ones, too.

Hasbro Pulse Reissues Original G.I. Joe Stinger
|
Via Hasbro Pulse: G.I. Joe Retro Collection Cobra Stinger with Cobra Officer. It's a reissue figure and vehicle for $33.99, which is pretty cheap. On the Instagram Live stream they implied it was in stock and ready to go, but the ETA is November 1 2022.
While more expensive than some vehicles 15 years ago, a typical O-Ring figure sells for about $20 these days. $34 for a figure and a vehicle seems pretty decent, but it should be noted there's no carded figure inside the box. There are, however, stickers.

Transformers x Tonka = Tonkanator
|
From Hasbro Pulse and Target: Transformers Collaborative: Tonka Mash-Up, Tonkanator. It's yellow Devastator, but an Autobot, with some weird eye paint in spots and Tonka branding.
While $104.99, that's actually a bit less when adjusted for inflation - comparing the J.C. Penney catalog price from 1985 in an inflation index calculator. It's still expensive, of course.
At this time there are still no plans to make a toy of the Tooncinator.

Button Cell Battery Safety Issues in Toys
|
From News.com.au: New button battery laws to be introduced after Melbourne mum's campaign. Short version: swallowing a battery results in the battery eating through meat, and it's demonstrated with a piece of raw chicken. Batteries now need to be better labeled and disposed of carefully.
This may be a trend in the making - electronics are in short supply so some toys are being redesigned without them, which you may see in the coming months. Most collector-friendly items from Hasbro for Star Wars and Transformers and G.I. Joe have no electronics, other than some helmet and lightsaber replicas aimed at adult collectors. Some manufacturers have sealed-in non-removable batteries, or entirely removable electronic compartments that parents can opt to not install, or big USB-C-charged batteries that aren't coming out without a fight.
Buzz has it this may be causing some issues with Australian toy importers. For the time being I know of no changes on any US toy laws - there's a lot going on here, to say the least - but it may remind you of a famous The Onion headline, Fun Toy Banned Because Of Three Stupid Dead Kids.

Lizard Assassin
|
From the Glyos News Dump: Healey Made Drops Another Assassin. The $25 3 3/4-inch lizard figure has a blaster, an alternate head, and a cape.
I previously reviewed the R-Complex and GID versions of the assassin and they're pretty great. If you like Jann Tosh's hair, Boushh's body, and Bossk's limbs, I think there's a lot to love with this loving tribute to 1980s action figures. $25 ain't cheap, but it's not like the world is swimming in Kenner-ish aliens anymore. I'd recommend a version of her to you if you don't already have one.
...I missed the "Trando" one so if you have one for sale, you know. Call me.

Review: Fisher-Price Adventure People Astro Knight Action Figure
|
Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
A real classic! The Fisher-Price Adventure People Astro Knight Action Figure is around 40 years old, and this one I got used as a kid - it's in imperfect shape, but shows character and how figure design changed in the 1980s. A lot of 1970s figures had painted hands and feet, which showed more wear and tear - a lot of later figures in other lines were frequently molded in color. This one has only 3 joints, but it looks really cool. So read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!

New HasLab G.I. Joe Cobra HISS
|
From Hasbro Pulse: G.I. Joe Classified Series Cobra H.I.S.S.. This big vehicle is basically an electronic remake of the 1980s classic toy, but bigger and with an open hatch in the back for more storage and play. It's impressive, $300, and was about half sold before lunch yesterday.
As of my writing this, it's at nearly 9,600 units sold - which makes sense, as it's arguably a definitive classic take (albeit with modest upgrades) of the most famous Cobra vehicle in the entire line. (Heck, I've got three colors of them myself.) This may be the fastest seller in the history of HasLab releases. It's also pretty expensive when you consider its size and price relative to other 6-inch Hasbro vehicles as of late, including one you won't be seeing until next month.
