Kickstarter: Mina the Hollower
|
Via Yacht Club Games on Kickstarter: Mina the Hollower. The creators of Shovel Knight are making a game that seems to be inspired by early Castlevania and mostly The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening - the DX port. It looks like a lot of fun, and the Roc's Feather jumping is plain to see. The game is expected at the end of 2023, with physical versions at the higher tiers for Steam, PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and I assume the other systems that came after them as well. The cheapest physical support tier is $100, so I'll be waiting for it to actually come out.
Generally speaking these guys do amazing work, with the stretch goals for Shovel Knight adding three full campaigns and a fight mode. It's nuts. This one doesn't seem to have any stretch goals listed, but they absolutely earn the money you give them.

Rumor: Toy Fair Considering a Move?
|
Via the New York Post so have a grain of salt: Toy industry's biggest show could leave NYC after COVID cancelations. People in the industry have chatted about a possible move of time away from the ice month of February for years, and attendees have frequently cited how much better Orlando, Los Angeles, or Las Vegas could be for the event.
But Toy Fair has been in New York since 1903, almost 120 years - it seems unlikely that it would change, but who knows? I used to be told it was in February to give stores sufficient time to see (and order) new items for Christmas shopper delivery... but longer lead times and the ability to order online may render all of that moot. Also I don't know if anyone really writes orders in-person anymore - a digital papertrail is generally a nice thing to have. But that is certainly a media outlet talking about our little world, so take it as you will.
Also being in New York City - while and endless playground of delights of all kinds, except toys - is tons of fun, it's not exactly a bundle of kicks to schlep around in 12 degrees before work or get blasted by winds outside of a company dinner.
After New York Comic Con last year, we saw exclusives sold online - not at the show - which shows that both the consumer and the business-to-business trade show are undergoing a period of possible change. Perhaps forever. (I mean, who really wants to wait in lines for 3-6 hours on your vacation to buy your toys?)

|
Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
Newish! The Hasbro Transformers Generations War for Cybertron Kingdom Voyager Tigatron Action Figure is a figure that's one of Hasbro's best. The transformation is fun, the articulation is good, and I love the sculpt. The tiger looks more like a tiger than the cartoon, so it may be something you'll really dig - in either of his two flavors. So read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!

It's orange, it has a mutant head, and it's fun to fuss with. Why don't you already have one? So read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!

Worth Hearing: Retronauts Episode 437: High-Fidelity Classic Gaming Redux
|
Via Retronauts: Retronauts Episode 437: High Fidelity Classic Gaming Redux. If you're a middle-aged video gamer who frets over the best way to play old games, this is for you. They touch on MISTer, RGB modding, and doing whatever it is to play the games you want in the way you think is best. While most episodes go over remembering your favorite things, this one is much more up-to-the-minute and discusses all sorts of new things which may or may not be in your retro game vocabulary yet.
What's great is they talk about how there are new machines that can play your old games better than your old hardware. Which means a lot of stuff you've been hoarding may be superfluous in our new digital age, particularly if you've been keeping up with various optical drive emulators (replacements for CD-ROM drives to run off SD cards) and the MISTer project. On the latter, PlayStation 1 games and Sega CD games can run now with Saturn development continuing - and it's pretty impressive. So do you still need that Tower of Power? (Yes, 32X games are still finicky to get running on modern TVs.)

New York Toy Fair Moving to Fall in 2023
|
Via The Toy Book: Exclusive: The Toy Association Reimagines Toy Fair New York as a Fall Event Beginning in 2023. New York Toy Fair has been a late-winter tradition for nearly a century, where people would fly across the Atlantic to peddle new wares and place orders for toys for the Christmas season. In recent years that's become less important, as in 2021 businesses placed all their orders over the internet (or phone/fax) to relative success.
Right now they're ballparking a September 2023 event, which means it would be right before New York Comic Con, which could mean toy and game industry people may be bunkering down in New York for a couple of weeks, plus or minus additional stops through Los Angeles if you're in the business.
This means that New York Toy Fair 2020 will most likely be the last winter toy show during the snow season, and the story indicates it may be a smaller show - and that it will completely replace the smaller, sparsely attended Dallas Toy Fair. (Historically, that show hasn't attracted press.)

Beyblade Movie Coming from Jerry Bruckheimer
|
Via Deadline: Jerry Bruckheimer Producing Movie Based On Beyblade Toy Franchise For Paramount. Skipping the Michael Bay-blade jokes entirely, Paramount and Hasbro have joined forces to make a new movie that involves the surprisingly robust line of Japanese tops, imported and sold in the USA by Hasbro. They debuted 20 years ago, way back in 2002.
No release date is given at this time, but Hasbro has also put a lot of toys into film development. Not all toys and games make it to the big screen, but the world still hopes for the Micronauts.

Playmobil Got Naruto
|
Via The ToyBook: Playmobil Strikes Deal with Anime 'Naruto'. That's a big deal! Naruto and Boruto have hundreds of episodes between them, and they're hugely popular among kids (and Funko collectors) right now.
Two waves of 12 figures each are coming this fall, and they may be mystery-bagged. (I have no idea.) At least one non-licensed Ninja figure looks a lot like Kakashi (pictured) and that's due in/around March for around $4. No playsets or other items are known yet, but 24 figures is a heck of a big line for Playmobil - they don't tend to take their licenses very far.
