The big G.I. Joe Collector's Convention was last weekend, and we have some news! Hasbro provided new 3 3/4-inch action figure pictures beyond what we saw at Toy Fair in New York, and while no specific dates are given it's nice to see many new "ultimate" versions of core characters. (Interestingly, no movie Roadblock yet.)
Also new: G.I. Joe Micro Force, which appears to mix Star Wars Fighter Pods' sculpting with things like display bases and separate legs. To say the least, it's interesting and different. Do check it out!
There's a lot more to be seen out there, but you probably saw the coverage by now. If not, well, ask and I'll link to more of it. If you can't find it. (You can, by now, I hope.)
I can't help but think the entire Cuusoo idea has gotten away from its intended mission statement. I can't imagine someone at LEGO was saying "Wouldn't it be great if people approached us with ideas that will cost us tens of thousands of dollars to license?" And speaking of licenses, Thinking with Portals! has some cute playsets and designs to be seen based on the Portal game series, some of which look pretty easy to make and a few of them could probably benefit from being a real LEGO product. It has around 3,000 supporters, and it needs 10,000 for LEGO to dignify the concept with a response-- so if nothing else, you can go see it and go "Oh, that's cute" and then go back to buying the new Lord of the Rings sets.
An interview with Donald F. Glut (who coined a few of the names in the franchise, including "Castle Grayskull" is included as well as a history on the franchise and an extensive look at the 1987 movie. It's $9.95 and you can find out more here since they emailed me and asked nicely-- plus it was a good read, too!
That was fast! A new update on OMFG is up on Kickstarter. Update #6: GID has arrived! lets you know the scoop: "We expect shipping to start going out on Monday so keep an eye on your mailboxes soon!"

When buying a comedy album, you have to ask yourself a low of questions, like "Will this be funny?" Since the answer in this case is "yes," the Doug Benson album Smug Life bypasses this particular question and instead asks "Is the comedian funnier sober or stoned?" As a high-concept album, it succeeds. It's also the first time I've ever heard a comedy album criticize its cover artwork during the performance, plus Doug Benson is one of few successful comics I've heard who have basically integrated social media fully into their act.

Arguably one of the most loudly-whispered secrets in toys over the last couple of years, Hasbro has finally copped to Star trek Kre-o toys! The full details in the press release basically say "new movie" but it doesn't discount classic, either, which may bump in to what they're doing with Minimates at Diamond Select Toys.
The press release has a lot to say, here's an excerpt: "In a groundbreaking move for entertainment based building sets, Hasbro teamed up with J.J. Abrams, director of the upcoming STAR TREK sequel, to create a KRE-O STAR TREK stop motion digital short. The digital short, produced by Bad Robot, features icons of the STAR TREK saga in a stand-alone storyline and will premiere at a later date in partnership with Paramount Pictures. At Comic-Con the teaser trailer for the KRE-O STAR TREK digital short will be featured along with the upcoming U.S.S. ENTERPRISE building set and KREON figures in the Hasbro booth. In anticipation of the convention, Hasbro is unveiling a first look image of the KRE-O STAR TREK U.S.S. ENTERPRISE set and the teaser trailer. Fans can view the teaser trailer now exclusively on the KRE-O brand Youtube channel at www.Youtube.com/KREO."
It also confirms these will be shown at Hasbro's booth at Comic-Con this week. Did we mention it's Comic-Con this week? Well, it is.

Time for Matty to mess with us: 2013 Club Eternia Figures January - March has changed at least once since going live yesterday at MattyCollector.com. Other figures mentioned included Clamp Champ, King Miro, Glimmer, and Hydron, and nobody knows if any of the lists are fake or not yet. But they probably are.

There's some really amazing stuff here but it's going to wait for Monday. You can find galleries elsewhere-- and should-- things like Super 7's ALIEN line are gorgeous.
Apparently legends are real. You probably saw the prototypes for these years ago, but now Super 7 has a retro ALIEN license. They are aspiring to make Kenner-style action figures from real Kenner prototypes and Burger King-style glasses, and it's just awesome.

More OMFG news! October Toys at Comic-Con 2012 sports new figures in the ZOMBIE and OMFG lines, plus an exciting surprise-- Pheyden! The Glyos character is among the walking dead and will be a minifigure soon. As I was hoping to see him appear in OMFG, this is pretty much exactly what I was wanting.
First look at Terra Firma in 3D! Outer Space Men at Comic-Con 2012 shows several shots of upcoming figures, few of which are genuinely new but as the saying goes "If you haven't seen it, it's new to you." Matty was busy! Mattel Masters of the Universe Classics Comic-Con 2012 coverage shows you a lot of fun surprises, like new 30th Anniversary figures, an awesome weapons pak, and of course Ram-Man. That's the good news. The bad news is that you probably won't recognize about half of the new figures in the gallery today, despite coming from Filmation, mini-comics, and elsewhere. But they all look good, and will be about $25 per if you get the subscription for next year.

Pricing aside, these look much more expensive than the first batch and will hopefully be cheaper.
SDCC: Kre-o Adds to Transformers, Star Trek, Battleship
While a lot of the news got out early, I still have a Comic-Con Kre-O Gallery for you. The big news: Transformers Mini-Figures (which Transform, sort of), Combiners, Star Trek, and yes, more Battleship. While some stores are letting some year one sets go, others are getting the new stuff nowish, so keep an eye on these brick toys as Hasbro seems to actually be putting some weight behind it.
The news continues with our SDCC 2012 Transformers Gallery and Coverage. The big takeaway is that the "Asia exclusive" toys are coming to Toys R Us in the USA, meaning Megatron (pictured), Wheelie, Blustreak, Hoist, and others will be available for not-insane prices. Presumably. Check out Masterpiece Optimus Prime and Thundercracker, plus Prime releases and a few Bot Shots you probably already saw at BotCon.
The secret license revealed: I'm not sure if it's really a new license due to branding and all, but SDCC 2012 Watchmen Mattel Action Figure News can be read by you, now. The deal is this: 6 figures, $25 each, subscription or not. No subscription exclusive. I'm not sure if this falls under the DC Comics/Warner banner or is some separate pact with Alan Moore or whatever, but either way, it's coming and I'm happy.

And this is just the beginning, as numerous toys from Portal, Team Fortress, Gremlins, E.T., and yes, more Predators were shown too. The redder, the better! The Kenner Legends of Batman Knightquest Batman is modeled after "Batman" after Bruce Wayne's back broke, and was inspired by the post-Bane storylines with Azrael and what have you. It's a little weird, but I dig weird. So read on, read our Star Wars one too, and come back soon for more!

Diamond had a lot to show in San Diego! SDCC 2012 Diamond Select Toys coverage features Star Wars, Star Trek, Walking Dead, Marvel Select, and more. Let's turn our attention to Mattel Batman and DC Universe. You've seen a lot of it, but I need to get these galleries up, so enjoy the photos! Not much commentary here, but hey, you get to see a new Movie Master. And isn't that what life is all about?
The SDCC 2012 WWE gallery is fascinating if for no reason other than Brawlin' Buddies concepts galore. He-Man, Major Matt Mason, and others were shown with no intention of ever seeing production. Word of MUSCLE-style figures came from the booth over the show, and dozens of new and existing action figures were shown in the glass cases. Check it out!
Rounding out the Mattel coverage is a SDCC 2012 Misc Mattel Gallery. In it, find vintage Major Matt Mason alongside new Ghostbusters, Back to the Future, Voltron, Cars, and some other stuff. There are no plans for new Matt Mason right now, but it's neat to see stuff from the archives, ain't it?
In a post called - The suspense is terrible... i hope it lasts. - you can find a pretty amazing fan-painted minifigures based on the creatures from Critters. It's $15 to get it painted, assuming you can get a figure, which I have not yet been able to do. But I want one.

Kid Icarus is something of a classic, in the sense that it's something everybody should play and nobody wants to play. I played through it back in the day and give it high marks. New 3DS games include The Phantom Thief Stina and 30 Jewels at 500 points and Masyu by Nikoli at 500 points.
Figure of the Day has updated once again! The daily feature on figures you might have but might not-- either way, here's what you've been missing! Spanning from the original Power of the Force series of 1995 to the latest of The Vintage Collection, it's almost like a history lesson!
Today we look at Anakin Skywalker, an animated release which is, sadly, almost free on eBay. Go to Figure of the Day for the next update, with the latest installment in our ongoing series!

Also, check out some 16bit.com Hasbro Star Wars SDCC 2012 coverage which is largely just me complaining. Much better coverage is on Galactic Hunter but I managed to snap a few shots between meetings to show you, and I'm sorry I didn't snap more Bot Shots. I'll make up for it in Orlando next month.
Oh, and if you love reasons to whine check out this cool Gentle Giant gallery too. They're doing an upsized version of a vintage 1979 Kenner playset, effectively 1:6 scale. Also check out a Scout Trooper maquette, because it's just cool.
If you've been around Los Angeles comedy there's a good chance you got to see Matt Braunger once or twice. He's a funny guy, and his second album Shovel Fighter both embraces and shuns the cliche of what makes a stand-up album work. What does that mean to you? There's stuff about Chippendales, vomiting, and being drunk next to tracks dancing gleefully in some of the darkest corners of the human imagination. In its 55 minutes, Shovel Fighter zigs and zags from things that would probably make a great set on a late-night talk show to stuff you'd put on a mix tape for your buddies because, honestly, they're going to want to hear it. The first half of the album doesn't really set you up for where the last few tracks go, and its unpredictable unraveling is a treat I dare not ruin for you.

Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting non-Star WarsFigure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
Now in stores? Transformers Generations 2012 Wave 1 may be in a store near you, as they've been showing up for a couple of weeks. Wave 1 includes Fall of Cybertron Optimus Prime, Jazz, and Shockwave which are pretty good, pretty small and not yet found by our staff, respectively. New Bot Shots 3-packs are also hitting Kmarts and Toys R Us stores, which is good if you want a Shockwave and aren't picky about the format.
I should also take a moment to point out that these are much smaller than other Deluxe toys. Jazz is barely larger in his car mode than Revenge of the Fallen Scout Brakedown, for example. If you're concerned about bang for the buck, or want the world's best illustration of just how far a dollar isn't going these days, you can also compare 2010 WFC Optimus Prime to 2012 FOC Optimus Prime. 2010 was $12-$13, 2012 is $15 and up. While the new toys are still quite nice-- Optimus in particular is more fun and less bloated than his ancestor-- the asking price is sticker shock if you're going to collect them all.
SDCC time! MattyCollector.com's Post-SDCC Sale is Today so do check that out. A limited selection of Vykron (good), Zuul (OK), Death (haven't opened yet), Bruce Wayne/Batman (ditto), and many others will be going up today for pretty decent retail prices. Even Monster High Sarah Screams and DC Polly Pocket should be live, so yeah, go get those.
Let's turn our attention to Mattel Batman and DC Universe. You've seen a lot of it, but I need to get these galleries up, so enjoy the photos! Not much commentary here, but hey, you get to see a new Movie Master. And isn't that what life is all about?
And that rounds it out for 2012! The next convention should be Star Wars Celebration VI although most of that will be on Galactic Hunter.

As Jay Sherman would say, "It stinks!" The Mattel Masters of the Universe Classics Stinkor didn't smell so bad when I first got it, but since then the odor has been wafting through my basement. It smelled so bad, Mrs. 16bit asked me to take it out of the living room! So read on, read our Star Wars one too, and come back soon for more!

The news out of Japan is light, but a picture got out and everybody is going nuts. Beast Saga: Clear Figures Coming? comes out of what appears to be a picture on a Japanese auction site. It is not known if these are truly chase figures, or customs, or what-- probably not customs, but the full story has yet to be revealed. While you make peace with whatever chase toy gods you worship, be sure to take a look at the pictures.

Outer Space Men: 2.0, Cosmic Creators, Alpha 2012 Shipping
A whopping 11 new figures are arriving and shipping from New Jersey as you read this. The Four Horsemen are now shipping 2.0 sets, Alpha 2012 sets, and Cosmic Creators sets and you can click on that to read more. Since you ask: we have not received any shipping notices as of yet and we ordered all 3 out of fear of not being able to get them at San Diego. (And how wrong we were.) More as we have it!

Purple, and a classic! The Hasbro Battle Beasts Sledgehammer Elephant is another one of those old toys I'll gush over since I've had it since I was a little kid. So read on, read our Star Wars one too, and come back soon for more!
Nifty Retro Space Toy Figures - Worth Checking Out
So old, it's new! Available in the 1970s and remade today, Return of the Galaxy Laser Team looks at a neat posed soldier line of minifigures sold about 30 years ago which have also been remade today. They were also called "Star Patrol" and you can read about them at the Secret Fun Spot Blog.

So orange! The LEGO Minifigures Series 4 Hazmat Guy is long-awaited toxic-waste-centric entry to the LEGO line, and he looks horrified to be here. So read on, read our Star Wars one too, and come back soon for more!
Goal achieved! One of the first Kickstarter-funded lines gets its second series greenlit. OMFG! Series 2 met its goal yesterday so if you were going to buy these figures, remember, shipping is basically free in the US during the pledge period. They'll ship, if last year was any indication, around December or January.
In less good news-- so far-- it seems Masters of the Universe Classics is having some difficulty hitting its annual subscriber goal. Sculptors The Four Horsemen made a post which tie in to Mattel's own Scott "Toyguru" Neitlich's comments, which in short are this: they're barely scraping 50%, and historically they've met the goal by now.
Last year, a Ghostbusters subscription had similar stumbles and didn't happen-- a few figures saw production, but the line is quietly slowing down and will probably be gone by this time next year. On the other hand, the DC Universe subscription program continued, but it is unknown what causes Matty's sword to grant mercy or a swift end.
Arguably one of the most fascinating aspects of this entire event is the unusual level of transparency. Usually, we hear nothing. If an item is in danger of being cancelled, there's no pomp, no press. It just goes away quietly, dumped in Europe (or in MOTU's case, Aldi's). This time around there's a glimmer of hope when it comes to getting a figure of Glimmer, although it has a hefty surcharge. The line has a few days before the subscription sign-up period ends, at which point Mattel will evaluate the situation and, well, whatever happens, happens. But as you're no doubt reading everywhere, if you're on the fence, it probably wouldn't be the worst thing in the world to go ahead and subscribe.
And here's your bad news. The Twilight Zone 8-inch EMCE Action Figure Update confirms cancelled products which is always sad to report. Maya the Cat Girl and Santa Claus are getting the axe, but due to likeness approval reason and not lack of interest. In a move of startling transparency-- and I say this as someone who is on their payroll at my day job-- they revealed Rod Serling, Bill Mumy, and nearly a dozen other actors and characters which were rejected for one reason or another. This is the kind of dirt I dream of seeing on toy news sites, and sure enough, they posted it. Should you be a student of toys from the future and you stumble on this post, I want to include the list so you can see it, or you can check here for their full story. Bif Bang Pow's Jason Labowitz writes:
"Here is a list of upcoming characters we were planning in the near future, but unfortunately these have now been cancelled:
Rod Serling
Anthony Freemont (Bill Mumy) from It's a Good Life
Maya the Cat Girl from Perchance to Dream
Santa Claus (Art Carney) from The Night of the Meek
Clown, Ballerina, Major, Tramp and Bagpiper from Five Characters in Search of an Exit. Originally scheduled for a deluxe Comic-Con exclusive set.
Battling Maxo from Steel
Marsh White (Mannequin) from The After Hours
Robot from Uncle Simon"
Having spent time working with Bif Bang Pow! on these and other items, it's sad to have to report this. But I'm thrilled we can actually share this information with you, so now you know what happens behind the scenes!
This week's batch on the DSi Ware Shop: Decathlon 2012 at 500 points.
Also up for the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console:
Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 and Mole Mania, $3.99 and $2.99 respectively. Wario is arguably a classic, I played through it a few times and it's both fun and easy. New 3DS games include Dot Runner: Complete Edition at 500 points and Planet Crashers at 1000 points.
Be sure to send in your questions for next week's thrilling update!

The quality is low, but the laughs, those are moderate. Beast Saga Site Update, Dice Battle Video showcases a fairly long video demo of the dice and card game packaged with the figures, but the sound effects and audio quality is pretty awful. Naturally, you'll want to see it.
Glyos Armorvor Introduced, Sells Out in Under 40 Minutes
You missed it! The July 29 2012 Glyos Drop Went Live Last Night to celebrate 5 years of this line, plus it had the first-ever Armorvor figure. (It sold out almost immediately at $8. It's like a Battle Beasts figure.) Also new were a comic and an episode of Passcode, the latter of which features the origin of the Armorvors and reminds me that I'm still itching to get a Delphi figure some day.

He sold qiuckly! The Mattel Masters of the Universe Classics Mighty Spector is extremely purple and sold faster than Draego-Mon, which was a bit of a surprise. It's no surprise that it turned out quite nicely, though! So read on, read our Star Wars one too, and come back soon for more!

There's a new video up of our pal Scott from Matty. The good news: he's optimistic about subscription numbers. The bad news: 2014, if it makes it, will be a much smaller Masters of the Universe line... but supposedly a great one. For everything, watch this.
I assume you read this note from the Four Horsemen as well which, well, it's interesting. Between distribution woes with Hasbro, indifference from Mattel's fans, it seems as if the high standards of the biggest action figure companies are starting to be a hinderance to collector interests, but at the same time, why release a figure nobody wants? It's an unusual tightrope walk and while new small companies are giving us some amazingly fun items, uncertainty makes us all a little nervous.
And just remember, no matter how bad things are, just be glad if G.I. Joe isn't your main plastic squeeze.
