Hasbro Gets Sesame Workshop License; Twilight Zone Stuff
|
Hasbro released a... release yesterday confirming that they have reached a deal with the Sesame Workshop (Sesame Street) to produce toys starting in 2011. While no products have been announced, we would advise against getting your hopes up for a robust 3 3/4-inch action figure line. (Although we do have hopes such a thing is considered for Comic-Con exclusive products.)
One of the two bigwigs of Bif Bang Pow! Jason Lenzi has written a great article presenting the insider's view on how the company has gone so far and why certain things have and haven't happened. (As we're also consulting on BBP, obviously, it's totally true.) Find out why there's no Rod Serling toys and the whyfores and whatevers of Lebowski on the Action Figure Insider. It's a pretty great read.

When the weather ruins his plans for a vacation, Wallace decides to turn 62 West Wallaby into a resort, complete with a beach in the cellar. He is first tasked with getting the requisite materials - sun, sand, umbrella - then he is ready for business! Unfortunately, his neighbors are incredibly sensitive and disagreeable people and must be placated, lest they demand their money back. This is followed by a "murder" mystery where Gromit must search the house for clues after Wallace's invention, the Deduct-o-matic, fails. [ READ THE FULL REVIEW ]

Joe, Star Wars, TF Sales Figures Sorta Revealed
|
A Target-based mole leaked some fascinating data to Hisstank.com regarding Hasbro's big three boy's brand sales at Target. From the article:
The [Rise of Cobra] figures themselves have been doing quite well with sales in 20,000 the last few weeks. Last week it was 24,000 plus. Now i compared these to the transformer line(pretty unfair in my opinion since this is the second movie following a cartoon, has a much bigger fan base already) this line sells about double that at around 48,000 a week. Now the clone wars line sold about 32,000 last week. Now i think that the clone wars has a cartoon and the joes hang pretty close with them in sales. Pits are selling and the deluxe figures(target exclusives) have jump up to over 8,000 a week(thanks to the second wave finally being out.that is compared to around 1,500 to 2,000 before)
While it's unknown if this is some sort of equal comparison-- which Transformers assortments are we comparing?-- it's still an interesting ballpark look at this whole thing. Check out the article for more!

Nobuo Uematsu Scores a Puzzler
|
Tozai Games is working on a new puzzler called Kurulin Fusion which has its top selling point in the form of its soundtrack, which was done by the famed Nobuo Uematsu. Or Mr. Final Fantasy Music to the first several generations of the series' players.
So yeah, we're posting about it because of the soundtrack, but Tozai also brought out XBLA's R-Type Dimensions and Lode Runner this year. So what is this Kurulin Fusion? The site says "Compelling puzzle/action game play" which effectively tells us nothing... but we're game nerds and we absolutely will give the game a look when it's released later this week because, well, Nobuo. The music is described as Uematsu meets Bach. Hunh. It will be $4.99.
Interestingly, the site also boasts that the soundtrack will be on sale soon. Which we hope means it's awesome.

The local dog shelter needs rebuilding after a fire, and its four legged residents are now homeless and making mischief. They've even managed to break one of Wallace's inventions, the Infiniflavour ice cream truck, which can turn anything you might want into an ice cream flavor. Gromit is a dog, so surely he can reason with them? After the truck is back in operation it's time for the Fundraise-A-Fair, put together by canine lover and philanthropist Monty Muzzle. However, it is generally unwise to trust a man with a mustache and mousy face. Gromit begins to suspect that something is amiss after his dog friends go missing. Can Wallace and Gromit find them and expose Monty as a fraud? Stay tuned... [ READ THE FULL REVIEW ]

US Contra Was Butchered, It Seems
|
The NES classic Contra seems to have been heavily altered for its US release. The evidence can be found over at Retronauts, with tons of video, stills, and more explaining this lost Famicom edition and its new American translation via the internet fan communities. Did you know it once had cut scenes? It's true!

19-Disc Castlevania Soundtrack Coming to Japan
|
In what may be the best thing to hit the scene for music nerds since the giant boxed set of the complete Stooges "Funhouse" sessions, it seems someone in Japan really likes Castlevania! A 19-disc release is planned for next March covering most (or perhaps all) of the long-running series. We can't wait to hear all about it and then complain about the $230 price tag.

Golgoth Searching for Toki Publisher
|
...apparently just for the Xbox 360 platform. The developer will be putting out the title on Sony's PSN service and Nintendo's WiiWare service (the latter in SD, the former in HD), but apparently Microsoft Game Studios doesn't want to publish it. We presume this is because Microsoft doesn't know awesome when it hits them in the face. It's a spitting monkey, people, just publish it! Joystiq has additional details.

Darius Burst Released... in Japan, Dangit
|
It is no secret that we are whores for classic shooters. Games like R-Type Dimensions, Gradius ReBirth, and their ilk make us squeal like annoying little girls. Taito released Darius Burst in Japan for the PSP, unfortunately there are no release dates nor are there any breaks for the import-friendly fan. While the Japanese game will play on US PSPs, unfortunately it also will cost you about sixty bones to import it. We demand cheaper. After all, we need to fight giant cybernetic seahorses. Check out the trailer and weep tears of pure joy, the likes of which you will only feel when your first child is born or when you find a quarter in the laundry machine.

Shooter, Polar Games for the Xbox 360 Live Arcade Released
|
Xbox 360 have two options this week, one of which has a freaking fantastic name.
- 0 Day Attack on Earth is 1,200 points ($15) and is described as a dual-stick shooter. We are intrigued! It's a big download, otherwise we'd have at least demo impressions for you now. It sounds promising.
- Polar Panic is 800 points ($10) and was also released on the PS3 this week. It's some puzzle thing, and there are polar bears. There are multiplayer modes and all that jazz.
Also, Microsoft marked down Marvel vs. Capcom 2 for 560 points, down from 1,200 points. It's a one-day deal and we'd wager it'll be over by the time you read this.

Transformers Q&A: Answers From Hasbro
|
We asked, Hasbro answered! Three questions, and one of which actually provides us with some insight into 2010. Read on!
Q: Word on the street is that Universe will return in 2010, with more G1-flavored toys. However, we were wondering if it might be like the last range, which also included newly molded toys of existing characters from Beast Wars (Dinobot, Cheetor) and Armada (Hot Shot). Can we expect the line to continue in that direction, perhaps with more Beast Wars, a Beast Machines character, or someone from another era of robots in disguises?
A: Overall, we do not have any hard and fast rules when it comes to the Universe/Classics line. It is not limited to any specific era of Transformers, as we see every character as part of the entire Universe. As a result, we make a lot of our decisions based off of characters and current themes. Unfortunately, if and when we do decide revisit the "Universe" line (wink, wink) we do not have any plans to revisit the Beast Wars or Beast Machines characters at this point in time.
Q: The big $100 Devastator toy seems to be doing pretty well. Does Hasbro have plans to do more high-dollar ($60+) items for 2010, or is this a special item for a movie year?
A: Yes, and stay tuned.
Q: Are there plans to release any Transformers television shows (Beast Wars, Generation 1, Animated) on the blu-ray disc format? Assuming this is up to the licensor, do you have a media contact we can ask?
A: While there are currently no plans for Blu-Ray releases, we will continue to explore any/all opportunities to bring the excitement of Transformers to fans of all ages.

Free Rocko's Modern Life, If You Have Zune or Xbox 360
|
The (arguably) classic cartoon Rocko's Modern Life is on the Zune/Xbox 360 Marketplace for $1/80 points an episode, and the first listed (but not first) episode is presently available as a free download-- presumably for a limited time. The quality is pretty good, and the show is much stranger than we remembered. The episode available was "Carnival Knowledge / Sand in Your Navel."
Also available are free episodes of Doug, Hey Arnold, and Rugrats.

ROTF Lockdown is Big, N.E.S.T. Releases, Clearances
|
Good news, everyone-- Transformers Animated is already casting its legacy! Over at TFW2005, find a gallery of the new Lockdown toy, due in a few months. Also, as of last weekend, we saw numerous N.E.S.T. deluxe packaged toys from Revenge of the Fallen at a Los Angeles-area Wal-Mart. Happy hunting!
Finally, Wal-Mart stores are slashing prices on their exclusives, including the three Universe repaints. We picked up a red Powerglide for $15.00 even. The Masterpiece Edition Skywarp has also been reduced to a nice $49.00.

Review: Qix++
|
Few companies in the 1980s had as many really fantastic arcade games as Taito, most of which have been reimagined in 2008 and 2009. Qix++ takes the original gameplay and adds power-ups and bonuses galore, which changes it from a race against death to a high score challenge. Sadly, there are only two suites of levels, and it's $10 for them-- and the additional two are paid DLC. [ READ THE FULL REVIEW ]

LEGO Embraces Blind Box Figures (at least in Germany)
|
Taking a cue from both descendant Medicom (Kubricks) and ancestor Playmobil, LEGO is going to expand the snot out of its figure line! Series 1 of these blind-boxed figures are being shown on Flickr as part of the 2010 line, and 16 new creations are included. Most of the heavy hitters are here, including an updated Classic Space-inspired astronaut, a clown, a caveman, a cheerleader, a Mexican wrestler, a zombie, a ninja, a robot, an adventurer, a vet, a magician, and a whole lot more. We're very impressed not just by the quality, but the selection. No word on a US release or pricing just yet, but we're all ears. Short of a pirate, a hobo, and some form of ape, this assortment hits all the right points.

G.I. Joe: The Next Cardback?
|
Having shown up on a few sites like , this very real looking Pursuit of Cobra packaging cardback sample sure looks legit! Hasbro hasn't commented on it yet-- and likely won't until Toy Fair-- but take a gander at what the future may hold! If real, this is really swell.
Oh, and don't forget to check out the awesome new Joe mechs there too. (This is the same as the below posting.) Lots of new mechs, figures, and some jet thing to be seen here. The Pursuit of Cobra is starting to look really great!

Jurassic Joe?
|
Hasbro is notorious for reusing molds-- heck, all toy companies are-- and this post at HISSTank.com rounds up tons of new and existing vehicle molds from G.I. Joe. Of particular interest are a pair of A.W.E. Striker vehicles painted up with JP logos and the InGen markings on the hood! Wow! Nobody knows what the deal is with these is just yet, but with the recent relaunch of Jurassic Park at Toys "R" Us it doesn't seem at all surprising that someone might be looking to expand that line.
Oh, and don't forget to check out the awesome new Joe mechs there too.
