Movie Sentinel Prime Almost Called Ultra Magnus

TransformersNot So UltraThe Transformers Live Action Movie Blog posted Dark of the Moon call sheets indicating Sentinel Prime was called Ultra Magnus during production until "test screening" changed the name. Presumably this "test screening" was by Hasbro due to the nature of these characters and their personalities, as I doubt anyone in a civilian movie test screener audience would care which preposterously long name the robot has.

Nintendo DSi & 3DS Downloads This Week

Nintendo DSTennisThis week's batch on the DSi Ware Shop: Pro Jumper! Guilty Gear Tangent!? , Stratego: Next Edition, Beach Party Craze, and Delbo. Each is $2-$5 and can be yours... if you have a DSi.

Delbo appears to be heavily inspired by the Bust-A-Move/Puzzle Bobble series. And Stratego looks like Stratego. Just like it, actually.

Also up for the Nintendo 3DS: Kirby's Dreamland from the GameBoy for $3.99. It's a genuine classic, and there are two "quests" (difficulty modes) to enjoy. The game is really easy and somewhat short, but it's one of those experiences that's perfect for a short plane ride (1 hour or so.) It's worth the four bucks.

Transformers MP Black Rodimus, Future Generations

TransformersBlack RodimusNow that's amazing-- the e-HOBBY Exclusive Black Masterpeice Rodimus is either a sight for sore eyes, or an eyesore. Shown in its many modes, it's a pretty gorgeous piece. Now how about a deluxe Generations version?

Seibertron.com posted new Wal-Mart listings showcasing Generations Junkion and Black Shadow which could be the retooled versions of Wreck-Gar and Thunderwing, respectively. The Generations assortment is still active and Hasbro has been mum about new additions, although information indicates it could be likely we'll see an Arcee in this assortment-- and if these new additions turn out to be accurate, and are not old data that someone forgot to purge upon a cancelation, this could be a very exciting year still!

Target's wave of exclusive translucent Dark of the Moon deluxe toys are hitting now, according to a few forums, meaning Space Case (at 1 per case) along with clearer versions of Arcee, Jazz, and Bumblebee can be yours.

The Japanese reissue of Devastator has been revealed and now it looks like it will be changed from previous releases-- take a look at the wrists and Mixmaster's drum.

Marvel Spider-Man SDCC Mighty Muggs Figure, New Universe Released

MarvelSpider-Man Mighty MuggsHasbro sent us some new pictures, including this Comic-Con exclusive Spider-Man Mighty Muggs Figure with a removable cloth mask-- you may recognize the feature from earlier.

The price is unknown at this time, but it will be on sale in a couple of weeks. This figure appears to be a full-size Mighty Muggs release, unlike the Avengers boxed set, which features a number of Mini Muggs along with a "giant" (read: normal size) figure to give the illusion of bigness.

I also neglected to tell you that new Marvel Universe figures are hitting Target (and presumably elsewhere) in the USA. I tripped over Apocalypse, Skaar (Son of Hulk), Scarlet Spider, Doctor Doom, and others which were all very impressive.

Oh-- and some Toys R Us stores have the Hasbro X-Men First Class comic packs on sale, a few bucks off. Worth a look, most likely.

Stronghold Unofficial Upgrade at TFCon makes Fort Max out of Onslaught

TransformersStronghold MaximusThe TFCon site posted pictures of their Exclusive Headrobots Stronghold with Ultra Magnus-inspired Reprolabels which will be sold at the Canadian convention. I personally don't think the thing passes as a Fort Max, but the price is about $44 on the upgrade kit. Here's hoping that they try this again with different molds and stickers in the future, it's a neat way to do an exclusive without necessarily having to go through Hasbro and not trampling trademarks. (It doesn't ape "Autobot" or any of their terms really, so... it should be clean as I vaguely understand copyright law.)

New Games for the Xbox 360 Live Arcade Released

Xbox Live ArcadeMs. Splosion ManXbox 360 owners, it's time to look into Ms. Splosion Man, a $10/800 points sequel to last year's super-fun platform... puzzle... thing. It's good. Microsoft says:

"The reviews are in! 1UP.com A Joystiq.com 5/5 IGN.com: 9/10 You got a problem? Yo, she¹ll splode it. At the Big Science after-party celebrating the capture of Splosion Man, a spill of champagne shorts out the safety protocols on the splosionatrix and from it emerges Ms. Splosion Man. The latest creation from Twisted Pixel Games, the creators of Splosion Man, The Maw, and Comic Jumper, Ms. Splosion man comes packed with fifty levels of single player and a separate fifty level co-op multiplayer campaign. Included with the game are gamerpics, a premium theme, and some sweet avatar accessories! Expanded map features, tons of unlockables, ghost replays, and countless other improvements make this the definitive edition for any splosion connoisseur." The first game was excellent, and difficult-- worth giving it a shot, I'd say.

Also new is Boulder Dash-XL, a remake of a classic PC (and to a lesser extent, console) game from the late 1980s. The original was a favorite. It's $10/800 points. It's joined by Warhammer 40,000: Kill Team, which... well, you kill things. It's $10/800 points.

Comic-Con: CNN Previews Indiana Jones Figures, Packaging

Comic-ConIndiana JonesThe prolonged non-announcement of many exclusives at Comic-Con this year has been strange, but it makes sense when you see that Hasbro held back this Indiana Jones boxed set announcement for CNN. The good: they got a nice placement on a huge news site. The bad: you can't see the packaging very well and let's face it, this is not news. It's unknown what other items are still up for grabs, and the price for this set is still unknown as no official press release has gone out yet.

Meanwhile, Shout! Factory confirmed its Transformers DVD exclusive will not be available at the show, which makes sense after its recent delay of the non-exclusive DVD sets.

Bad news for him, but good news for everybody else!

New Outer Space Men Concept Heads from Mel Birnkrant

MoviesMeteor MattDesigner Mel Birnkrant added several new head concepts to his online sketchbook. I particularly love the idea of Matt Meteor (pictured), an alternate to Commander Comet based on the real-life head of the super-cool dude and Glyos patriarch Matt Doughty from Onell Designs. (Be sure to say hi to him at Comic-Con, I plan to. Nice guy, good talent.) Another really slick design is an inverted Electron+, where the head is basically a clear solid helmet with an empty place where the head goes. It's really mind-blowingly neat to consider and I can't imagine another line that pulled this off, it's a really great idea and I hope these-- and the other new designs-- see production.

Figure of the DayHasbro Cloverfield Electronic Action FigureSomething new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting non-Star Wars Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? So far, only Star Wars!

It's #200! The Hasbro Cloverfield Electronic Action Figure was one of Hasbro's uncommon collector-only items. Usually there's some degree of kid marketing, but this was marketed squarely to adults, which, outside the FX Lightsaber line, is downright uncommon. It's also huge, so I figured it was a good fit for this milestone. Say what you will, but at least they're honest about what kids like! Review (Elsewhere): Transformers Headmasters DVD

TransformersHeadmastersYour pals at the Anime News Network asked me to write this Transformers: Headmasters DVD review which is now up for the reading. Have you ever had to watch 13 hours of cartoons to meet a deadline? Well, it's quite the experience. Decent show, if you like this kind of stuff, and my data shows that you do. (Good for you.) Read it here.

There are 35 episodes (no recaps) and the entire thing is subtitled Japanese. In English, I mean, so you should be able to grasp it. Interestingly, the titles reference concepts from the mythology not introduced until nearly a decade after the show aired, so you can smell fan involvement in the packaging of the show for English-speaking audiences.

There's not a lot of humor in the show, but it has a few shining moments. My favorite of which is this honest-to-goodness unedited shot from the second DVD in the set:

Headmasters

You are welcome.

SDCC Better for Transformers News than Botcon Already

TransformersUnicron News is getting out early! First up is Unicron, a previously-announced Amazon exclusive taking the existing Armada design, which was redecorated for Japan in 2010, and is now being redecorated again for us in America this year. It looks great, but the faction is "Decepticon." Hunh. TFW has other previews as well including the first public look at some other new stuff like the new Air Raid.

SoundwaveAlso interesting is a very promising (and very unlicensed) faux-Masterpiece Soundwave toy which is about the same size as the Starscream mold. The toy is shown using G1 cassettes, so that should tell you something about the size. It would also not be surprising to see Hasbro announce one this weekend. A companion Blaster is shown on the same page.

Comic-Con: Overtired News Briefs

Comic-ConOrbitronYou may not know this, but my day job involves me being in toy meetings and press events all day-- so as I type this it's about 11 at night, I've been up since about 5something or other as I flew in early on Thursday, and I just want to tell you fun things. Let's start with Outer Space Men Orbitron, the Man from Uranus has been revealed. As expected, it's awesome, and should make a fine companion piece to next year's Colossus Rex and... whoever else comes out. Matt Meteor, maybe. Do check it out.

Meanwhile, Diamond Select Toys verified that there will be no progress on Battle Beasts in 2011, possibly because they hate me, but I cannot be certain.

LEGO got the DC license and are apparently distributing a low number of items on the show floor-- free figures, to be exact. I've another promotional figure to discuss but am embargoed until tomorrow.

Mezco got Earthworm Jim. I got pictures but no time to process. Very exciting!

Bif Bang Pow! finally showed off the first 3 3/4-inch Venture Bros. figures. Pics to follow! The final production on Mego Doctor Who is really nice too-- if there's ever been a more perfect fit for the Mego-esque format, I have yet to see it.

The Mattel Voltron build-a-toy is massive. I see why it's $290. I'd be much more excited were it not for the shipping surcharges on 10 individual items over the course of the subscription. The dang thing is 22-inches tall when assembled, and each lion is a separate, distinct toy on its own with seating for a 3 3/4-inch figure inside. This is the kind of thing that exists just to prove a) it can be done and b) to make your friends jealous.

I'll try to post galleries and editorial later-- for now, I can't. Oh-- Square-Enix will be doing figures from the original Metal Gear Solid, unpainted prototypes were on display and were quite large. You'll be pleased.

Comic-Con 2011It's that time again! I'll be doing writeups all week long, as convention-lag keeps me down. Other tidbits: No new G.I. Joe panel, no new product after the initial burst shown. LEGO got both Marvel and DC comic licenses. Licenses for some products for next year's The Hobbit have been signed (and are confidential as far as I've been informed) but the master toy license/action figures is presently unknown or unsigned. I was in the back room at Gentle Giant for a meeting when it was packed with their Slave Leias and what may have been Adrienne Curry dressed as Leelo on a break. This is why you get in the toy business.

Today we look at the Darth Maul from like ten years ago. It's nice! Go to Figure of the Day for the next update, with the latest installment in our ongoing series!

ThunderCats On TV Tonight

ThunderCatsOrbitronWe got some word on the new ThunderCats TV show airing tonight on Cartoon Network. BanDai sent me a message saying... well, this:

"As you may have heard, ThunderCats, one of the most beloved series of the 80s, is back with a contemporary, re-imagined new animated series debuting on Cartoon Network [tonight], Friday, July 29 at 8 p.m. (ET, PT). Timed to the premiere of the series, Bandai America has just announced that its fresh, fun and innovative new ThunderCats toy line is available now in stores nationwide."

While I haven't seen a dang toy at retail yet (Mezco's giant Lion-O has shipped, though) it's good news that the TV show will be on now. Set those DVRs kids! If it's anything like the other shows not owned by the network, its time may change and you're going to not want to miss it. (If you want to order them from our sponsor, click here because we get a cut of it.)
