Wal-Mart Gets Kung Fu Grip 12-Inch Figures
|
During our trip, we saw tons and tons of new things like Hasbro's 12-inch Kung Fu Grip G.I. Joe figures. Interestingly, most were scattered throughout the toy section, and they were a mere $9.96. Distribution seems spotty, but as with all Wal-Mart Hasbro exclusives, this is to be expected. Happy hunting!

Star Wars Figure of the Day: Day 492, 493
|
Today at Galactic Hunter we look at the second "modern" bounty hunter with a glimpse at IG-88 from 1996! Sure, he looks like a repaint of the 1981 figure with a waist joint-- but could there be more to him than that? Read on!
We continue with a gawk at the 2000 Destroyer Droid! He has battle damage, and he explodes. As one of the first spring-loaded Star Wars action figures, could he possibly be worth picking up almost eight years later? Read on!

Wii Virtual Console This Week
|
Time to save some money! From the NES: Play Action Football, a four-player NES classic American football title that people used to just freaking love. From the TurboGrafx-16, it's Neutopia II II, yet another game nobody played. From the Sega Genesis: Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which is like Sonic 2, but with Knuckles.

Xbox Live Arcade This Week
|
Over 15 years ago, Sega's "Sonic 2sday" promotion was a big deal, cementing its blue rodent as an important franchise. More or less. This week's Xbox Live Arcade game is Sonic the Hedgehog 2, a port of the Genesis classic for a mere 400 points ($5). Considered by some to be the last good Sonic game, the title introduced the first of his fuzzy companions with Tails, a fox with two tails. If you haven't got your fill of this title on other compilations on other consoles, you could do worse.

Star Wars Figure of the Day: Day 494, 495
|
Some days are great. Today, not so much, as Galactic Hunter looks at two figures starting the abysmal R2-D2 from the end of 1998! Bad paint, bad sculpt, bad deco... what more could you ask for? Read on!
We continue with a deluxe figure, which are typically pretty bad. Obi-Wan Kenobi from 1999 is no exception. If you plug a lightsaber into a figure's back, is it more fun? We examine this. Read on!

Wii Zelda Zapper Thing Coming for $20
|
On November 19, Nintendo wants to sell you the Wii Zapper with Zelda Crossbow Training for $19.99. You get a molded plastic cradle for your controllers and, we presume, a disc with a game on it. Interesting concept, but where's Duck Hunt? We may have to get it, as it's cheap, and so are we.

Upright Citizens Brigade 2 Next Week
|
Given that volume 1 of the DVD for Upright Citizens Brigade came out in like 2003, we were more than a little surprised to see that the delay for volume 2 has actually resulted in a release due in stores next Tuesday. There's a press release but all you need to know is to go to the store on Tuesday with money.

Xbox Live Arcade (Japan)
|
Two quasi-legendary games were announced for the Xbox Live Arcade in Japan last week, both of which may interest you. One is Rez, a unique techno-y, beat-based "shooter" from Sega that's both abstract and completely understandable. The game was sold previously on the Dreamcast and Playstation 2, the latter of which was sold alongside an item called a "Trance Vibrator" which was a USB-powered vibrating box. We've also heard that "Rez" is Japanese slang for a woman who prefers the company of women, although someone may have been yanking our chain. The game was not a huge commercial hit, but the gaming illuminati dug it so it's good to see it get another chance.
The other game is Treasure's Ikargua, another fine color-based shooter. Originally on the Dreamcast, the game came to the USA for the GameCube, and nobody seemed to play it much on either. Once more the gaming elite said it was awesome, as it has been, and shall be once more. Neither title is confirmed for US release, but both are on the way to Japan for certain. When? That we don't know.

Star Trek Coffins Coming; Today a Good Day to Die
|
The trip to the Genesis Planet not yet included. TrekMovie.com has a report that Eternal Image has secured the Trek license for funeral products-- so coffins and such. We could make a joke about not being able to get any action in life, so why should death be any different, but that seems kinda too easy.

Star Wars Figure of the Day: Day 499, 500
|
Today at Galactic Hunter we look at the kicking version of Obi-Wan Kenobi from 2005! He has redder hair, tattered clothes, and his kung fu is stronger than yours. Is this enough to buy yet another version of this character? Read on!
We continue with a gawk at the 2006 George Lucas! He's a mail-away premium in a stormtrooper outfit. How cool is that? Well, let us tell you. Read on!

Wii Virtual Console This Week
|
Time to save some money! From the Nintendo 64: Yoshi's Story, a simple but short and fun 2D platformer. From the TurboGrafx-16, it's World Class Baseball, watch us pretend to care. From the Sega Genesis: Super Thunder Blade, with helicopter action.

Xbox Live Arcade This Week
|
Available (probably) now, the new game Geon: Emotions is ready to download. Well, not at press time, but probably by the time you read it. It's a sort of puzzle strategy thing. And it's very colorful, but it's $10 (800 points). We'll try it and let you know.

We continue with a gawk at the black R4-K5! This is Darth Vader's astromech droid, or at least one of them, because a Sith Lord is nothing without a good robot. Is this a good robot? Read on!

R-Type Tactics Out in Japan, With Bonus
|
Color us surprised. Uberimporter NCS posted a page with R-Type Tactics explaining that a) it's out and b) there's a freebie with some copies of it. While we personally feel queasy at the word "tactics," we do admire toy bonuses and this one has a nice bonus R9 ship for your collecting wonderment. We're quite curious to see how it plays. (The toy. The game, not so much.)

New Freezepop This Week
|
In case you didn't know: Freezepop's new CD is dropping this week, and there's apparently at least three versions: a standard release, a signed release exclusive to Newbury Comics, and another limited edition release with bonus tracks (details TBD at press time). It's called "Future Future Future Perfect" and will probably be pretty good if you like their other stuff, and we do, so that's why we post this public service announcement to let anyone out there who might care know about it.

Halo Action Figures from McFarlane: Pre-Orders, Photos
|
Cortana, Master Chief, and the whole gang are coming out as toys, and you can pre-order them now from our corporate overlords who were also kindly enough to post images. Figures are available individually or by the case, and there's some nifty sorta-exclusive Spartan variants to be had as well. There are Grunt figures, statues, busts, and all kinds of junk for the fans of the series out there. As most video game merchandise tends to be pretty fly-by-night, it might be worth snagging the stuff rather than waiting for a hypothetical clearance sale. If you dig it, that is. (Which we say as we drool over our beloved Metal Gear Solid collection.)

Star Wars Figure of the Day: Day 506, 507
|
Today at Galactic Hunter we look at the 1998 version of Darth Vader with his removable helmet! It was the first to sport such a feature, plus it had a great sculpt and excellent (for his day) articulation. Nine years and many figures later, is it worth it? Was it any good? Should you get it? Read on!
We continue with a gawk at the 2003 Yoda! This one has a chair that "floats" as well as a sidekick figure for a fairly decent low price. Could you possibly have a use for yet another Yoda? Read on!

Wii Virtual Console This Week
|
Time to save some money! From the Super NES: Kirby's Avalanche, a clone of Puyo Puyo that was lots of fun. From the TurboGrafx-16, it's Legend of Hero Tonma, which we never heard of. From the Sega Genesis: Streets of Rage 3, with plenty of rage.

Xbox Live Arcade This Week

G.I. Joe Convention This Weekend
|
With the new convention in Atlanta this weekend, you're going to see some new stuff, like some surprise convention exclusives. In addition to the boxed set, there's two versions of the Mauler vehicle each with a unique figure, a VAMP vehicle, Grand Slam & Starduster it would seem, and more. All in all, a pretty solid mix of goodies, and more news about non-exclusives should start popping up any minute now.
