Review: Sonic Hot Wheels Monster Trucks Scorpion Special Glow Edition Action Figure
|
Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
Glows! The Sonic Hot Wheels Monster Trucks Scorpion Special Glow Edition Action Figure was a rather large glowing freebie we got with lunch one day in May, and of course, I had no idea it existed until we saw it in the bag of food. You should get one if you can. So read on, and come back tomorrow for more!

Review: Hasbro Transformers Generations War for Cybertron Kingdom Voyager Inferno Action Figure
|
Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
It's like you remember, but better and maybe cheaper! The Hasbro Transformers Generations War for Cybertron Kingdom Voyager Inferno Action Figure doesn't surprise, but it does give you an Inferno that looks like an Inferno for about $30. The last G1 reissue at Toys R Us over a decade ago also cost $30 - and this is bigger, with more articulation, but less chrome. I really like it. So read on, and come back tomorrow for more!

Strike Force Alpha: O-Ring Joe Style Figures on Kickstarter
|
Via Kickstarter: Strike Force Alpha action Figures. These are o-ring figures, sculpted by an ex-Joe sculptor, designed with part-swapping and customization in mind.
Deco and sculpt look good, with decent accessories and retro-style articulation. They're also around $25 per figure, with the minimum buy-in being $50. You get extras like swappable hands too.

Dallas Toy Fair: On for October
|
Via The Toy Assosciation: Toy Fair Dallas is on for October 5 through October 7. This is not a big show for the media or for collectors, but is an industry show where some buyers go to preview the coming year. (I have never been to this show myself, but some co-workers have.)
It's never been an event for product announcements, but since it is happening in-person (and overlaps with New York Comic Con) this is one of those events industry watchers are likely to keep an eye on as it's potentially one of the first toy industry trade shows to take place since March of 2020.

Seinfeld LEGO Coming in August
|
Via LEGO: 21328 Seinfeld is a replica of two sets from the show - the stand-up club, and also Jerry's apartment. Like Friends it may not be a show you'll let your kids watch, but it's another neat collectible for adults. You could buy a mini-bust for your desk, but wouldn't a small TV set be more fun?
It's definitely the best show at the end of the 20th century, plus the set includes Jerry, Elaine, Kramer, George, and Newman. Is it worth $80? Probably. It has 1,326 pieces and joins Funko in this long-awaited licensing program.
Next up? Maybe Community.

Starbucks x Playmobil = We Missed It
|
Via eBay and Hypebae: Starbucks Launches Special-Edition Figures With PLAYMOBIL. These are already sold out and were exclusive to South Korean Starbucks, sold as a premium with a drink back in January and February.
While pretty neat designs with good colors, the sets are now already quite expensive. Here's hoping they get sold elsewhere in the world, as single figures usually start at around US $40 shipped with the complete collection of sets (and furniture) coming in closer to $300 and change. I admit, I am surprised the line has an astronaut, but no mermaid. Stuff is easy to miss.

Via the Glyos News Dump: Meet the Healey Made Assassin! The 3 3/4-inch figure incorporates elements of vintage Kenner action figures - you can smell the Bossk - and reinterprets them as something new. The plain blue figure is $20.

Shattered Glass Jetfire: New Transformers Exclusive
|
Via Hasbro Pulse: Transformers Generations Shattered Glass Collection Jetfire & IDWÕs Shattered GlassÑ Jetfire, expected to ship in January. It's $91.99, which given this year's toy inflation doesn't seem too shabby - it also includes a comic book.
The Deluxe toys are $10 more than their previous releases. This Jetfire is only $12 more than the Siege version, given how much everything else has shot up I was anticipating this release to be around $95ish with the comic without considering any exclusive mark-up. While the other toys in this line have largely been similar to the BotCon exclusive toys (or comics), Jetfire's a new toy - so you probably have less of an "I always wanted that" attachment and potentially a "OK that's neat" vibe.

Playmates Gets Star Trek Toy License, Take 3
|
Via StarTrek.com: Playmates Toys Boldly Returns To The Star Trek Universe. Back in the early 1990s, Star Trek seemed to be mostly for older collectors until Playmates made the perfect toy line, with lots of accessories and numbered figures, at about five dollars each. They did this while Kenner had less impressive $6 figures, and managed to appeal to kids and families by virtue of the show being a tremendous cross-generational hit after its third season. People loved Star Trek beyond just Trek fans, and you could actually make good money in toys that sold in quantities around 250,000 of some of the more popular figures. It was intense - and you could buy those figures at toy stores, or catalog shops, or even Spencer's Gifts. It was a real phenomenon.
The 1990s figures are still good and largely cheap - and this new line says it will kick off with "action figures, vehicles and ships, role play and other toy categories for all Star Trek properties. Playmates will launch its new Star Trek toy line in 2022, following Star TrekÕs entry into kidsÕ content with the premiere of Star Trek: Prodigy, the first Star Trek series aimed at younger audiences."
Currently Star Trek is largely on deep digital broadcast channels or streaming services, with CBS' new Star Trek shows on Paramount+. The new shows are adult-oriented with more violence and language, so it's less likely that kids will be seeing most of them compared to Data and Geordi doing whatever it is they were up to each week. Just because a company has a license doesn't mean a whole big range is coming out - the 2009 Playmates line did have plans beyond the then-new J.J. Abrams movie, and those never came to pass. There were also additional products from the Hasbro and McFarlane Toys lines that didn't make it out. I hope this ends up being big and fun - Playmates tends to make amazing toys with some properties.
There's a lot of entertainment to be had in Star Trek with just under 800 TV episodes and 13 theatrical movies, with plenty to share and discover. --AP

New NES Game: The Adventures of Panzer
|
Via Kickstarter: The Adventures of Panzer. It's based on a web comic I don't follow, but there's a demo and it's good. (I got killed at the boss at what I presume was the end.)
This game cartridge is set for release in March 2022. It's also a bit more expensive - it's about US$60 for a bare cartridge, $80 for a boxed copy, and shipping to the USA is another $20 making it one of the more expensive game cartridges for this era of Nintendo Entertainment System releases. There's also a limited edition version.
The playable characters were charmingly low-res with excellent backgrounds and snappy music. Also the logo and cinematic screens took a long time to sit through and couldn't be skipped.

This figure is set for release in Fall 2022.

G.I. Joe Origins: Snake Eyes Opens Friday
|
We normally don't make a fuss about movie opening dates here, in large because the marketing machine does a really good job about letting you know. Snake Eyes is due out this week - no really, it's expected to be in theaters Friday. Like the last movie the toy launch is a little weird, with Hasbro allowing pre-orders for some of the toys but not others and as far as I know, stores don't have any of these on-shelf yet. At least, I haven't seen any.
The movie was slated for last year, then this fall, and then suddenly got moved to this week in the wake of other recent box office successes this year - albeit without the marketing campaign or the toy tie-in to inform people it's actually coming. Black Widow had toys out last year, but they basically ran through those with minimal support for the movie and what certainly felt like a lot less promotion for it. There are plenty of prognosticators out there for movies, so I'll just leave this out there to remind you that the movie is indeed due this week and it's unlikely you'll see the toys in person before the August toy aisle "holiday" reset. And that's assuming stores want to carry them given the movie will probably come and go quickly... but the figures do look pretty neat.
There are a lot of movie - some with toys produced - pushed for later this year, like The Eternals and Ghostbusters: Afterlife. These things have been bounced around so much that I can only say that I assume they will still be released. But I still haven't seen Black Widow so what do I know?
Anyway, there's no 3 3/4-inch movie line this time, and the film's toy line is going to be pretty small. There are some nice classic-inspired 6-inch figures for about ten bucks though, so keep your eyes open for those.

Playmobil Gets Asterix License
|
Via Spielwarenmesse: PLAYMOBIL announces ASTERIX and OBELIX license cooperation. In Europe, the Asterix comics have run for decades and been translated into many languages, creating generations of fans. In America, Asterix is something parents buy their kids when getting them to learn a second language. It's hugely popular and it's kind of amazing it wasn't the first license for Playmobil given their market focus.
There's no guarantee it will come to the United States. So far, the Heidi sets haven't made it here.

Mego Does G.I. Joe
|
Via eBay and Hypebae: G.I. Joe x Mego Ninja Rivals Snake Eyes & Storm Shadow 2-Pack. Due in Fall of 2021 for $59.99 - a healthy mark-up over other Mego action figures - this set has more accessories and more ornate costumes than other recent (and vintage) releases.
For those keeping track, Hasbro and Mezco are both doing 6-inch figures, Super7 is doing 7-inch figures (and also 3 3/4-inch figures), and Mego is doing 8-inch figures. Multiple firms are doing 12-inch figures. While a lot of companies made Mego-like figures of other, later action figures, this is the first time a Hasbro character was produced in the Mego-branded format.

Arcade 1Up Does The Simpsons Arcade Game
|
Via Arcade 1Up: The Simpsons Arcade Machine. Given the parts shortages in the world of games, this is expected to be expensive. You only get one game on the cabinet, so says the description, but it's a very nice-if-scaled-down replica with a 17-inch monitor, controls for four players, wi-fi for online play, and a stool. It's not the same size as the real thing - it's more cramped, but it's cheaper and requires no fidgeting to work after you put it together.
Pre-orders kick off next month and, I assume, these may be in Walmart for the holidays. It's a real classic - they had these in a Barro's Pizza near me for quite a long time. Taking adults' favorite things and repackaging them as they age (and have more money) is nothing new - if your dad or maybe grampa go the Rhino Catalog in the 1990s, you have seen this play out with rock and roll records and jukeboxes before. Video games make a lot of sense for 1980s and 1990s kids, but it does sound like it will be harder and harder to guess what unique quasi-public fixture will be brought to a future man cave/rumpus room for adults 20 years from now.
