Star Wars Figure of the Day: Day 116 & 117

He was in a book! Today at Galactic Hunter we start with a look at the Wedge Antilles action figure from the tail end of the POTF2 line, the one from the three-pack. Surely you bought one-- and if you didn't? Read on!

Gonk, gonk. Today at Galactic Hunter we also look at the Power Droid action figure from the POTF2 line, the one that was packaged with a tall Jawa. Need it? Read on!

Transformers: "Kiss Play" Rodimus & Asian Stereotype

TransformersGone Fishin'Over at Noda-ya, we think, you can see the first shots of Rodimus with Xao Xao or however they're translating it today. The figure is a modified version of Alternators Mirage, with a mini figure of a woman eating rice. Rodimus is the selling point and this is expected to be $55-$65 when imported in the USA. We're praying Hasbro brings it over for less, but aren't holding our breath.

HDTV Star Trek "Special Edition" Confirmed

Star TrekMy... ship! The guys at Star Trek.com confirmed it. CBS/Paramount are doing new effects shots, new music, and more edits to the classic series. Is it a good thing? We're not sure yet. We're curious to watch the shows, currently packaged for syndication launching this September, and we'll no doubt tune in to see a few of them. Want to know more? Read on!

Star Wars Figure of the Day: Day 118-121

He's got stupid hair! Today at Galactic Hunter we start with a look at the Luke Skywalker in Stormtrooper Disguise action figure from "Escape the Death Star" board game. He has no helmet-- should you buy him? Read on!

We also added a few others over the holiday weekend. Hooray!

Zoids: 2006 Q4 Neoblox Releases

ZoidsNewOver at Zoidspoison, you can read a summary of release dates of new Neoblox kits along with prices. There are no new photos at press time, but the thread has a tiny image of a special "NBZ-EX01 Ptera + Kong Set" which has a black and yellow blox Iron Kong. It should look a little familiar if you're a fan-- it's based on the Iron Kong MK-II. A red "Bloody Kong" version is coming as well, so if you like apes, well, you're in luck.

Transformers: Prepare To Go To Target

TransformersDouble Your FunWhile not announced, it seems someone from China has the first glimpse of the Target exclusive "Battle for Autobot City" two-pack featuring Ultra Magnus vs. Skywarp. These figures are repaints of Optimus Prime and Starscream. Prices and release dates are not known, and it's also not confirmed this is even coming out at Target-- we expect it to be legit, but you never know if the sticker was added as a joke or something. More later, we expect to see it in October or November though.

We read there might be some Toys "R" Us exclusive "deluxe 3-pack" recently but we can't find the report. We're crossing our fingers this might include Thundercracker or Sunstorm or something equally cool. Odds are we'll hear all about these at Botcon 2006.

Gojira DVD In Stores Now

Comic-ConGodzillaWe heard about this first at Comic-Con, and it's in stores now. The original cut of Godzilla is available at Target (and many other stores) as low as $14.99, or even cheaper. This goes nicely with last week's new volume of Mystery Science Theater 3000 which includes Godzilla vs. Megalon. Good times.

Zoids: Toys "R" Us Redux

ZoidsNewWhile we thought it was a fluke at first, Toys "R" Us stores are getting some old cases of direct-to-clearance Zoids. We've spotted Liger Zero and Liger Zero X at two locations so far at prices below $10, notably as low as $2.48. Your mileage may vary, but these toys used to be close to $25. They're lots of fun and totally worth the price, so snag one if you see it on the cheap. You'll thank us!

DVD Next Week

DVDStella!Next week should be a good week for DVD. This week, we got Gojira and Lost Season 2. Next week, we're going to be getting the likes of Comedy Central's Stella, which can best be described as a Marx Bros./3 Stooges homage. It's quite funny. You'll love it.

Also coming is the third release of the Star Wars Trilogy on DVD. The first release in 2004 had four discs, one being a bonus disc with a documentary. Release #2 was in 2005, and dropped the bonus disc. The new release has the movies as three separate releases, although Best Buy is offering a bundle with a tin and other stores have premiums and exclusives. They also have the original cuts of the films.

Transformers: Classics Grimlock, Jetfire, Ramjet

TransformersMe Grimlock A ClassicFirst up: get a good look at Grimlock on eBay. This "Classics" toy is supposed to be part of Wave 2, and can be seen in robot and dinosaur mode. He looks vaguely like the Berserk Fury Zoids kit in dino mode, and the robot mode looks far and away better than the last Grimlock for kids, which was in Energon. Don't miss it.

PinheadAlso, this thread illustrates how to look at a Japanese patent site to see Classics Jetfire, Ramjet, Optimus, and Starscream as resin prototypes. Obviously, it's exciting stuff, and you should check it out.

Monday Funnies: Idiocracy

16bitEndumbeningWhile it seems to be playing almost nowhere, we did scope out Idiocracy last night. It's a Mike Judge movie, like Office Space, but with sci-fi and dick and fart jokes. It was apparently shelved in 2005, and we're not too sure why. It takes a lot of potshots at consumer culture, some easy, some creative, and manages to stay mostly entertaining during its 90-or-so-minutes. We mean, we didn't do a lot of watch-gazing. It's funny enough to go see, so if you have the time and it's actually playing in your town, go check it out. You probably won't be sorry! (We liked it.)

Seen this figure before, have you? Today at Galactic Hunter we look at the Yoda action figure from the Saga Collection wave earlier this year. Transformers: Classics Grimlock, Mirage

TransformersYou Can't See MePhotobucket seems to be the depository of all sorts of new images, like this first-ever image of Classics Mirage, from Wave 2 of the Deluxe Classics line. PinheadAlso, another auction for Classics Grimlock went up with many new images of the toy from various angles. It really does show how much fun this toy might be.

Misc: Aquapict Toy Jellyfish

16bitAquatasticOne of the more unique toys we saw over the years came out of Takara, and they had a large line of unusual light- and battery-powered aquatic "pets." Banpresto is making the Aquapict, which seems to take the basic idea but apparently, they come in their own tank. We think. It's hard to tell. You get jellyfish that change color, making this the sea-based equivalent of a lava lamp. We're quite impressed. We'd love to buy some but, well, we don't exactly make what the kids call "the big bucks."

Alternators Ravage II, US-made Optimus Prime Palz?

TransformersRavage ReduxSo after introducing a "robot" Battle Ravage toy in Alternators a couple years back, Hasbro is giving it another shot. This eBay auction shows the new Jaguar-- as in the car Jaguar-- which has a "beast" mode instead of a robot mode. We quite like the idea and the execution is, to say the least, unique. Check it out.

If you're bored, the same guy also has Classics Grimlock and Classics 2-Pack Optimus Prime. These appear to be new images. Grimlock still looks pretty cool, if not really "classic"-y, and Optimus still looks like fun.

Optimus BlockIt was never meant to be, but Creatus Maximus looks at an amusing series of concept images for Optimus Prime as a blocky Palz figure. Neat! Fans of block figures may remember a MyClone release a few years ago, but as of yet none have been released with the US market specifically in mind.

Best Crazy Wii Rumor of the Week

Video GamesBugwah?According to an article at GameSpot, GameStop is requiring trade-ins for preorders for the Wii. $50 worth, to be exact. It's not a national plan but it is interesting, and if you know how much money you make a store like GameStop by giving them your used games for a song rather than selling them yourself on eBay or elsewhere, you'd probably start to hate yourself a little more.

New Star Trek "Special Edition" Impressions

Star TrekMy... ship!Because we're suckers for stunts involving special effects, we tuned in to the 12:05 AM airing of "Balance of Terror," the original Star Trek episode that introduced the Romulans to the future franchise while continuing to reveal the hard-on the writers and producers of the show had for all things Rome-esque. The episode itself was what it was-- the new music more or less seemed to fit in nicely (or they didn't replace all that much) while improving the look of the show in some respects, while going nuts with the color saturation. It looked pretty good, but it really did look like an old show with new CG ship scenes. The slavish devotion to the original effects (and blocking) resulted in some bizarre camera angles that, while respectful to the original, looked kinda cornball to a fault. I was expecting something like the "In a Mirror Darkly" episodes of Star Trek: Enterprise, but this was a little less... um... good.

Until the front page changes, you can see some more impressions from a more hardcore fan at The Digital Bits. They pretty much hit the nail on the head.

Star Wars Figure of the Day: Day 136

He doesn't like you. Today at Galactic Hunter we look at the Ponda Baba action figure from 2002 and 2004-- this is the one with the slice-off arm. Is that a cool enough reason to buy another one, or does he need something like articulated knees to be a winner? Read on!

HD-DVD for Xbox 360

Video GamesBugwah?According to an article at GameSpot, there are rumors about a cheap-ish HD-DVD add-on for the Xbox 360 around. And it turns out it's legit-- which isn't a bad price for those looking to add HD-DVD to their media setups. We, frankly, do not have an interest in next-generation DVD tech as of yet but we are all about game console add-ons, so there you have it!

Also, in the "tell me something I don't know" file, the NPD group released an article on who a core gamer may really be, namely pointing out what people are too stupid to remember-- that kids have a lot of time to play and a significant portion of the "heavy gamer" segment is between 6 and 17. (Which was our period of the hardest of the hardcore gaming-- with the NES through the Nintendo64.) You might want to read on for proof of what Nintendo has been doing right.

Final Transformers Cybertron Waves Hitting

TransformersAll Good ThingsBetween sightings we're reading online and personal sightings, it looks like the most key-filled line of Transformers ever is about over. Cryo Scourge, Galaxy Force Vector Prime, Galaxy Force Optimus Prime, Smokescreen, Optimus Prime (Ape), Megatron (T-Rex), and... that seems to be about everything, is hitting. Still to come are a couple of Scout-class items.

This is significant in that it means that Classics toys are expected to hit fairly soon. Initial information indicated an October/November time frame, which sounds about right. With past lines, Armada shipped its last new release around November of 2003 with Energon starting that December. Energon basically ended in March 2005 with Cybertron starting in June. So there's a good chance that they're on the way, but there might be some overlap.

Also, check your local Toys "R" Us stores for the Optimus Primal vs. Megatron set, based on the "Rebirth" set released in Japan earlier this year. It includes a DVD with the episode "Possession," in which Waspinator is possessed by Starscream, and otherwise is old molds with new paint and new heads. We rather like them. Retail is $39.99.

TransformersHot Rod...imusWe had some time, so why wait for Monday? Today we look at Transformers Classics Starscream, a newly released toy from Hasbro. Our sample came from Entertainment Earth, so if you're wondering what store it was at, there's your answer. But is he awesome enough to satisfy your perverse Generation 1 lust that you've been harboring since 1984? Read on!

TransformersHot Rod...imusWe had some more time. Today we look at Transformers Classics Megatron , a newly released toy from Hasbro. This one takes the basic concept of "turns into a gun" and adds coloring and other elements from the past two decades of toys based on the character. We added numerous photos and of course, lots of worthless commentary. Is it worth getting? Read on!

Also, Figure of the Day has been updated! The daily feature on figures you might have but might not-- either way, here's what you've been missing! Spanning from the original Power of the Force series of 1995 to the latest of the Saga Collection, it's almost like a history lesson!

We also added archive pages so you can go through the entire column's run. Hooray!

Transformers: Classics A-Plenty

TransformersBlink And You'll Miss ItThere are numerous mirrors of this gallery of Mirage test shot images. Apparently he's fragile, but you can check him out.

Also, you can see a boxed Jetfire on eBay until it gets pulled. Exciting! It's one of the first decent looks at the toy.

We spent all weekend doing pictures and crap so we're going to stop here for today.

Star Wars Figure of the Day: Day 142

Slice and dice. Today at Galactic Hunter we look at the Obi-Wan Kenobi action figure from the Episode I in 2000. Part of a two-back with Darth Maul, this set had a base and could slice the Sith Lord in two. It's neat-- but do you need this particular Jedi? Read on!

Transformers: Ofishall Grimlock, Mirage Bios, Images & TRU Sale

TransformersMe Grimlock Have BackstoryHasbro.com posted two pages you might care about, each with official images and bios for Grimlock and Mirage. Apparently Grimlock's tail weapon is supposed to be a whip. Works for me.

Also, Toys "R" Us is running a buy-two-get-one-free sale on Transformers and a number of other products. We've noticed that the three stores we've checked have about 6 Deluxe toys between them, however some new larger items are available and we found some Wave 3 Cybertron Mini-Cons too. Neat. Check your local store for availability, sales are through this Saturday. We've found some good stuff, but we're jonesing for the rest of the deluxes we missed.

Transformers: Classics Hitting USA?

TransformersIf you read up on other Transformers sites, it seems that a number of stores are starting to get quantities of Classics figures. Entertainment Earth received theirs last week, and reports of a few smaller stores receiving theirs have come up as well. Plus, it seems at least one Fred Meyer got theirs-- so happy hunting! Buy lots. Make Hasbro feel stupid for not releasing tons and tons of these. (In case you didn't notice, we bought them and want a lot more new ones.)

Halo RTS coming to Xbox 360; Peter Jackson "Game" Too (and Wii stuff)

Video GamesHalo WarsIf you love Halo's rich universe and hate that nasty first-person-shooter fun, perhaps Halo Wars from developer Ensemble Studios may be your bag. The game, featured in pictures and video on numerous sites like The Magic Box, takes place during the first meeting between human and Covenant forces. Click through to see what the fuss is about.

Next, everyone is reporting Wingnut Interactive (or Peter Jackson's new division) is doing something with Halo that's an "interactive" project. Some reports indicate it's not quite a game and not quite a movie. Well, whatever it is, it's the stuff nerd dreams are made of and we're quite curious to hear more.

Finally, ports of select Commodore 64 games are coming to the Wii. Epyx will be porting titles like Jumpman Junior, Winter Games, Impossible Mission, and other things you probably don't care about.
