Castlevania HD Xbox 360 DLC Released, Pricey

Xbox Live ArcadeHydrophobiaXbox 360 owners, it goes without saying that downlodable content is often more expensive than it is worth. Castlevania: Harmony of Despair has a new map available today. That's one new map, and it's $5. From Konami:

"In the new map pack, players will be able to explore an ancient pyramid while they grind their way through and try to survive new enemies and foes in the new level, 'Beauty, Desire, Situation Dire'. Staying in line with the quintessential Castlevania 2-D side-scrolling action, this new map teleports players to a totally different world of psychedelic art within the ruins of Egyptian pyramids. Awaiting at the end of the map is a femme fatale boss, Ashtarte, with the sole intent of breaking your soul into oblivion. For players looking for new characters to play with, Julius, Maria and Yoko will be coming soon to Xbox LIVE Arcade, make sure to stay tuned for those upcoming DLC releases."

To reiterate: one map is $5. Extra characters will cost more. The entire original game got you 6 levels and several characters for $15. Would it kill them to give you the characters and the map at $5?

LEGO/Toys "R" Us Reissue Vintage LEGO Minifigures

LEGONEWIn a move as infuriating as it is awesome, LEGO and Toys "R" Us are teaming up for "Bricktober." What does this mean to you? Toys "R" Us stores are giving away reissued LEGO Minifigures with a $20 purchase. Sure, they call them "magnets" but the figure is fully removable from the magnetic base, meaning it's a figure. You can't fool us, LEGO.

From now until October 9, you get the Imperial Solider (pictured). After that, it's the Cavalry Colonel, a 1981 Fire Chief, and the final entry is a 1984 Black Falcon. Of the Black Falcon's Fortress fame. This is a heck of a great idea on LEGO's part.

Comic Jumper for the Xbox 360 Live Released (and Reviewed)

Xbox Live ArcadeComic JumperXbox 360 owners, it's time to look into Comic Jumper, a new run-and-jump from Twisted Pixel filled with "attitude" and "humor." It's $15/1,200 points. But how is it? The developer provided us with an advance look (thank you, Twisted Pixel) and we posted a full review with screenshots and a ton of concept art.

The developers of The Maw and 'Splosion Man have, in effect, created a 2010 rendition of a Sega Genesis game with Comic Jumper. The humor, violence, in-jokeyness, and generally irreverent attitude of games like Earthworm Jim have been given a modern makeover. This is clearly meant to be an update on what it meant to be a 16-bit platformer in the 1990s, and like those games, this one is a mixed bag. The hero, Captain Smiley, is exiled from his own comic book to guest-starring roles in a swords-and-sorcery title, a silver age classic with a surprising amount of fetish talk, and a few "manga" stages which pretty accurately portray how most Americans see the genre. (But with fewer tentacle monsters... and a lot of tentacle jokes in the background.) [ MORE ]

Also new is Dead Space Ignition, a rare 400 points/$5 release. It sounds more like a form of advergaming to us, but don't take our word for it-- check out this marketing copy: "The game blends an interactive comic presentation of the story with three unique hacking games‹Hardware Crack, System Override, and Trace Route. You'll also receive unlocks in Dead Space 2, including an exclusive suit for Isaac Clarke."

This Headline Reserved for Classics Kup

TransformersBlasted Youth ElementOver at Amazon Japan, see Transformers United Char (Kup) which is expected very early next year as a part of Transformers Generations in the USA. He turns into-- get ready for it-- a more modern picKUP truck. (Get it?) The car mode looks good and the robot mode looks OK, but one thing we're noticing is that the plethora of classic toys since 2006 don't necessarily shut the door on a future, even more G1ey line of new sculpts down the road. It probably won't ever happen, but there's certainly a crack left open in the nostalgia door.

Other new reveals from Amazon.jp include Lugnut with a new paint job, a slightly different Straxus, a much better look at Perceptor, and another glimpse at Wreck-Gar. If we had to complain, we'd say there weren't more Decepticons. Aside from that? 2011 is looking great.

Sega History on eBay

SegaVampiresNobody will accuse Night Trap of being a classic, but the game was actually really important in shaping the modern game industry through legislation, fearmongering, and a general sense of disinterest by the populace. At press time it's only $399 which, adjusted for inflation, is still cheaper than what a Sega CD sold for when it debuted in the 1990s.

Scooby-Doo, Jeffrey Combs, and Harlan Ellison Too

Cartoon NetworkAfter years of celebrity guests both real and imagined and hundreds of masked monsters, Cartoon Network started a new-- and highly entertaining-- reboot of the mystery-solving team on its new show Scooby-Doo: Mystery Incorporated. Not only is it fairly funny, but it's packed with celebrity cameos.

Best Guests Ever?

Last week's episode "The Shrieking Madness" was basically tailor-made for sci-fi fans. The story involved an H.P. Lovecraft parody, with an author named "Hatecraft" played by the inimitable Jeffrey Combs (he of Re-Animator and recent TV Star Trek fame.) He's on the left. It also had Harlan Ellison as Harlan Ellison, or a version of the sci-fi author as he might have appeared in the 1970s. (On the right.)

The show was packed with gags that, if you're interested in science fiction or the plush monster industry, will no doubt ring true. Funny stuff, kids! Check your local listings for repeats (and new episodes) on Cartoon Network.

New Aquabats EP Hits in November, Album in 2010

MusicNew?Earlier in the year, The Aquabats said they would be putting out an entire new album this November. It would be self-released and a download-only item except at shows-- this may have changed. AMP Magazine has an interview with Christian Jacobs and and since this is from just a few days ago, this being the important part:

"We haven't announced this yet, because we haven't signed the deal officially. We were self releasing the record, and it was supposed to come out November 9th. We're finishing it up now, and in the music business you're not supposed to finish something and then turn around and release it right away, it's kind of bad planning. We didn't care; we just wanted to get the record out. We were just plotting ahead and finishing up the record and then FEARLESS RECORDS called. They were like, "We'll distribute this record for you guys, we'll help you, we'll do a deal with you guys. It can just be for this record, you don't have to do a six record deal or whatever other labels would want." We're probably going to put it out on FEARLESS, but here's the kicker: they want some time to promote it. So, on November 9th we're going to release an EP, which will be a single from the record and then the record will come out in January. "

And yes, we realize our target demo and our staff are probably too old to be excited for the band but we still grew to love "Charge!!" and we're going to buy this the day it comes out, too.

Video Games88 MPHThe Telltale Games Blog added a ton of video links and information on pre-ordering the new Back to the Future video game, which will be released on the PC, Mac, iPad, and Playstation 3. (The Wii and Xbox were not listed.) Pre-orders are up for the entire season at $24.95, which seems pretty good.

If "free" is more your angle, go to this page and enter the code "121GIGAWATTS" for the first episode for free at some point in the future. Which isn't bad.

PSP Go Price Drops in US, Life Goes On

PSPDon't You Want Me Baby? The oft-maligned (fairly) PSP Go has had its price dropped from $250 to $200. It still has less functionality than the normal PSP and a premium price point. It was dropped to closer to $150 in Japan, meaning that one market actually understands the word "value."
