Classic Review: Hasbro Transformers Generations Combiner Wars Decepticon Offroad
|
Something new every day-- but this was posted 10 years ago today! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
Posted 10 years ago! The Hasbro Transformers Generations Combiner Wars Decepticon Offroad was a replacement for Wildrider, for some reason. He's cool! But he's not what people wanted as a first choice for a limb, and we haven't seen him get a new toy since. I expect he may be forgotten. Do read on, and come back tomorrow for a new one!

|
Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
Not new! Hasbro Transformers Legacy Evolution Voyager G1 Universe Metalhawk Action Figure is a barely-changed redeco of an existing toy, and... it's neat! There's no Pretenders shell, but the colors are decent and it's pretty good for a Cyclonus retool. Read on!

Nintendo World Championships: Week 47
|
Via Nintendo: Competition #47 is on now in Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition. There was no actual record of the updated batch of challenges - no press release was added - probably because of the imminent Switch 2 launch. So, I'll just write what I played tonight as the game itself did get an update.
This week:
Veggie Plucking (Super Mario Bros 2) - in which you get plucked.
Updraft (Kirby's Adventure) - in which you take a ride up the jetstream.
Gut Bomb (The Legend of Zelda) - in which you get bombed with Dodongo.
Shoo, Lakitu! (Super Mario Bros) - in which you run through 4-1, again.
Finders Keepers (Donkey Kong) - in which you pick up a nice bag and a pair of sols.
Since it's been almost a year I was about to stop tracking these - but since Nintendo stopped, maybe I'll keep doing it unless I see it's a fluke. It's a nice thing to have a record of, for no good reason, like the other things I track.

|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: J7R-T (The Book of Boba Fett, Droid Factory). He's a newish release that sold out online quickly. He has salad plates. The dome isn't a perfect match for the show, but he's pretty good - check it out and keep your eyes open in case they show up in a theme park or elsewhere. Read the whole review.

Star Wars Review: Shin Hati (The Vintage Collection)
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Shin Hati (The Vintage Collection). The costume and lightsaber look great! I'm not sure the wig and nose are right. Her lightsaber hilt hangs on her belt, the armor has a lot of detail, and the articulation is very good. How you get her hair right - even with a separately molded wig - seems like quite a challenge.

Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 This Week
|
This week's batch of titles on the eShop: Arcade Archives 2 RIDGE RACER, BRAVELY DEFAULT FLYING FAIRY HD Remaster, Arcade Archives SUPER WORLD COURT, and over a dozen more.
Switch 2 Game Cube games are going up with that subscription program including The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-Zero GX, and SOULCALIBUR II. That's a pretty great start.
In some console life cycles I'd be saying it's time to keep an eye out for the final Switch 1 game, but my hunch is that backward compatibility will keep software for the older system in development for years to come. According to Wikipedia, the final US game for the Playstation was FIFA 2005 in 2004 - nine years after the console debut. The black and white Game Boy came out in 1989, with Pokemon Yellow Version: Special Pikachu Edition as its final release in October of 1999. The final games for the Atari 2600 (from 1977) were released in 1991, before the revival a couple of years ago. The original Nintendo Wii came out in 2006 and its final game, Just Dance 2020, came out in 2019 - but its final non-dancing, non-singing game was in 2015. The Wii U came out in 2012, and its final game came out in 2023.

Something new every day-- but this was posted 10 years ago today! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
Posted 10 years ago! The Super7 x Funko Alien ReAction Ripley (Spacesuit) was a redeco with a head swap of Kane, and she turned out well making use of old Kenner aesthetics. It's a little more expensive now but I like it. Hopefully you got one when she was $10. Do read on, and come back tomorrow for a new one!

Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
New! Hasbro Transformers Age of the Primes Deluxe Solus Prime gets her first full-size figure, but she's been a Prime Master, and she's had a hammer. The robot looks nice enough, but the shoulders are weird. The vehicle looks weird enough, and her shoulders make you ask why they went with that design. For a mythical character robot figure that you probably won't play with much, she looks interesting and has a top-tier head sculpt. As something you'll transform... you won't transform her much. Apple Beige PLA Filmanet for 3D Printers and their Mac Fans
|
Via Ars Technica via Seth: Endangered classic Mac plastic color returns as 3D-printer filament. The classic beige cases were all the rage until about 1998, and then Apple shifted to clear plastic and then brushed aluminum... and that was all she wrote. The entire PC biz moved on! Polar Filmanet is selling [Pre-Order] Retro Platinum PLA - 1kg 1.75mm (estimated ship date 7/14/25) at $21.99 a hit, and I'm not sure how it fares to the various "bone" or "beige" shades, but it's probably worth trying out if you're making mini PC things.

Nintendo World Championships: Week 48
|
Via Nintendo: Competition #48 is on now in Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition. New old challenges!
This week:
Not Lichen It (Super Mario Bros: Lost Levels) - in which you get die or die trying.
Fire in the Hole (The Legend of Zelda) - in which you are the one who knocks.
In Rhythm (Excitebike) - in which you struggle because it's this game
Magic Jar Excavation (Zelda II: The Adventure of Link) - in which you dig for pottery.
Curtain Call: Lemmy (Super Mario Bros. 3) - in which you drop an Ace of Spades on a boss.
Excitebike always vexes me, but I got the trophies. So go get yours, they're worth exactly nothing but you can feel like you're still squeezing something new out of this game every week.

Star Wars Review: Stormtrooper (Epic World of Action Mech Force Suit)
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Stormtrooper (Epic World of Action Mech Force Suit). It's pretty cool and you might actually find it in a store near you. The Trooper has added joints compared to last year, plus an unusual pattern of red circuits and forearm splash color. The suit itself has clear red fists, a big blaster, and generally looks fun. It stinks that we're not getting any Retro vehicles after seven years, but at least Epic is delivering some interesting new toys for people to overlook. So go get one. Read the whole review.

Old and battered! The Mattel Hot Wheels Fire Eater was a car I thought was long sold - if memory serves, a friend gave it to me before he moved when we were kids. It's got a gash in the front and some wear, but it's pretty solid for a toy of its age. Read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!

Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
Old! The Super7 Universal Monsters The Mummy Ardath Bey ReAction Figure is sold out, but you might still find one. It's pretty good - the colors may be wrong but it can be hard to know for a black and white movie. The faux Kenner aesthetic allows for off-color figures, so in that respect this might be superb. I like it. You might like it too. Do read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!

Star Wars Review: Dr. Evazan (The Retro Collection)
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Dr. Evazan (The Retro Collection). I haven't opened every figure in the set yet, but this is an early favorite. The 2025 Target exclusive is a new sculpt with a very good head sculpt - better than the 1997 Kenner POTF2 version - and purple pants. He has two blasters, so you can give one to an old unarmed Walrus Man if you have one around. (One of my old Kenner Walrus Men makes a cameo in this one.) The set is currently out of stock near me, but that doesn't mean it's gone for good - keep an eye out, and I'd recommend you get one (or two, or three) of this set if you see it.

Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
Not new! Hasbro Transformers Legacy United Deluxe Robots in Disguise 2001 Universe Side Burn Action Figure is a remake of a figure that, 25 years ago, was a stunning change in direction (and complicated.) Nintendo World Championships: Week 49
|
Via Nintendo: Competition #49 is on now in Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition. It's a pretty good mix with two longer than usual challenges.
This week:
Super Leaf in the Wind (Super Mario Bros. 3) - in which you collect 20,000 leafs under the sea.
Death Mountain Duel (The Legend of Zelda) - in which you go to Lynel PlayWorld.
One on 1-1 (Super Mario Bros) - in which you beat the first level.
Every Last Eggplant (Ice Climber) - in which you collect inappropriate emojis.
Underworld Wonder (Kid Icarus) - in which you beat an entire palace.
I got a new controller, and I'm finding it's a little twitchy - an occasional weird turn, I assume, as the result of controller throw. My old one had a similar thing where it would sometimes register phantom presses. I still got the trophies though.

Star Wars Review: Human Male Rebel Pilot (Rebel Pilots set, The Vintage Collection)
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Human Male Rebel Pilot (Rebel Pilots set, The Vintage Collection). What if Hasbro gave Luke a different head? Well, they did, and here it is. Pilots without vehicles are probably the troopers I need the least, but it was a well-executed design and now you can have it take up space somewhere. It's not bad - it's just not as interesting as the rest of the set.

Dr. Demento to Retire
|
Via Yahoo/Parade but not yet his own web site: Iconic Radio DJ [Dr. Demento] Makes Major Announcement After Legendary 55-Year Career. You probably heard him on the radio, or streaming in recent years. He hasn't done much updating of his web site in a few years but has put out a couple of records. And he's 84, and according to the article he already broadcast his last new show. There will be bi-weekly retrospective episodes until October for the 55th anniversary.
I blame this show for my shift to vampire hours. When I was a teenager, it aired on KZON 101.5 FM from 12:00 AM to 2:00 AM Sundays into Mondays. Over-the-air radio broadcasts ended in June 2010, but you can still catch up with streaming shows on the web site. Audio comedy has been kind of stagnant for a while, especially since "Weird Al" has semi-retired from new albums. I never found another show like it for funny stuff, but you'll occasionally find Cheech & Chong or Monty Python on Henry Rollins' KCRW show. I listen to Rollins' show every week, as well as the BBC6 Iggy Confidential show - which tends to not have a lot of comedy in it.
It's kind of sad to see the show ending after chugging away online for 15 years, and hopef

Review: Kenner The New Batman Adventures Wildcard Joker
|
Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
Old! The Kenner The New Batman Adventures Wildcard Joker is from 1998, when Kenner was still Kenner for its last year before transitioning to Hasbro branding with the Star Wars Flashback Photo series and Beast Wars Transmetals 2 Cybershark and everything else. This figure was based on the redesign we saw on TV, a streamlined clown but a perfectly sturdy figure that holds up well to play and the ravages of age. Sadly they don't make them like this any more, especially not with projectile playing cards. I was in college when this came out so my appreciation is probably not necessarily right on the money, I was picking these up because they looked like the TV show and didn't fully appreciate the wacky accessories and play features as much as I should have. Now they're gone. Well, unless you go to eBay. Do read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!

TMNT-Alike The Radical Rejects on Kickstarter
|
Via Kickstarter: The Radical Rejects. These gys designed five pretty solid figures based on the general vibes of Playmates of the late 1980s and early 1990s, when they were simple, cheap, and sturdy. These aren't cheap - but it's over 33% funded.
The main guy is Smash, the Terrible Teddy, and he's $85 before shipping. Indie toys are not cheap, nor are the spectres of tariffs to come. It looks like a lot of fun, and like a mix of Slash, My Pet Monster, and... well, pretty much any of those oddball mutants we probably didn't fully appreciate when they were $3.99 at Kmart. Even if you don't want to buy these, you should look at the campaign. I really wish these were cheap toys I could go get at the store, they seem like a lot of fun.

Star Wars Review: Walrus Man (The Retro Collection)
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Walrus Man (The Retro Collection). It's the only remake of the only wave (that I know of) for the year, taking the 1979 figure and sanding down the edges. The whiskers seem to have been reduced in resolution and blurred out, and the various wrinkles are softer than the real deal - but the colors and paint are perfect. The joints move nicely and the plastic feels great. Hopefully they can sharpen up the next round of reissues, but after seven years of figures I would not hold my breath. His hand can hold his (or one of Evazan's) blasters, but it's a little looser than the 1979 hand. Still, it's nice, and I like the improved eye paint a lot. It's charming, and you should be buying this set anyway.

Via Guerilla Toss on Bandcamp: You're Weird Now. I've been a fan of the band for years, and it's been sounding less weird as it goes - but I'm curious to hear how it turns out. A CD, orange vinyl, and/or a t-shirt with a download are up for grabs for a September 12 release.
I heard about them through the show notes for Henry Rollins' radio show, which you should probably be listening to if you aren't already. It's good.
It's also worth noting Frank Zappa's Cheaper than Cheep TV special/CD/record/book/whatever is out and that's an Amazon ad link. I haven't decided which configuration to get yet - there are too many choices.

We're taking donations for server costs! Really. One of the rewards is Q&A a few days early - you can read next Monday's installment as soon as it's ready, which can be as early as 1:00 AM my time on Monday!

If you've got a dollar a month to share, please Visit the Galactic Hunter Patreon and help cover our server costs. I'll still put in hours of work, writing, photography, and research - I just need some help making sure that the site costs me only time, and hopefully not money. Thanks for your support!
