Power Up Baseball: Lost NBA Jam MLB Arcade Game

  Via the Video Game History Foundation: Baseball's Lost ÒNBA JamÓ Revealed is a little-known 1990s arcade game that tried to apply the fast-paced play of NBA Jam to the slower-paced game of baseball. In the 1990s, baseball was getting a lot of grief during a strike where a lot of people speculated the slow-paced sport would probably not come back - obviously, this did not happen.
Why didn't the game come out? Roger Sharpe was quoted as saying: "It's one thing to put it in a box [for a home console] and sell it for $39. I don't care how long it takes you to play the game. You've made the purchase. But is it a quarter an inning? And nine quarters upfront? Do I give you a discount and it's $2 to play a nine-inning game versus $2 to play a four-quarter basketball game?
"You can have the greatest arcade game known to man. But if it's going to take 10 minutes to play that game, and it's going to bring in $1 versus it's going to take 20 seconds to earn $1, as a location owner, which product am I going to buy?"

  Via Hasbro Pulse: Fortnite G.I. Joe Collab Snake Eyes: Zero Point Edition. You can pre-order the figure at Hasbro Pulse right now - it's a $20 figure with a bunch of accessories for $39.99, and looking at the paint job, that seems about right.
While I can't speak to Fortnite as I am a cartridge-era gamer, I can say this figure looks pretty good - but it's out in 2022, which may as well be a million years away.

Remastered Super Mario World Soundtrack
|
|
  Via Chris Kohler: Super Mario World Restored OST. The Super NES used highly-compressed samples to make the music in the game - someone re-created the music using uncompressed samples. It sounds pretty neat, but it's not going to change your life like suddenly hearing a remix of Tom Waits' "Table Top Joe" that inexplicably adds a trumpet near the end.
It's worth checking out.

 Via Toy-Wizards: G.I. Joe Classified Mini 99 Cent Discount Figures are Showing Up in Stores. Power Rangers are also showing up.
Hasbro (and other manufacturers) develop product specifically for these low-dollar chains - Hasbro has had a lot of Spider-Man stuff in recent years, too. You are unlikely to see any of this in big box stores or online retailers, unless you're buying them to flip online that is.

Transformers Get Even Bigger

  Via Buyker Lab on YouTube: Unboxing Hasbro's MASSIVE HasLab Transformers: War for Cybertron UNICRON In 4K | ASMR. Unsurprisingly, it's big. Surprisingly, it begins with someone fondling the box for several seconds.
While certainly the largest Transformers toy to date, it's not Hasbro's biggest toy ever - that crown will probably remain with G.I. Joe's U.S.S. Flagg for the remainder of our lifetimes. It also shows the figure is bigger than Scorponok - but not significantly so. Bulkier, sure, but not a lot taller.
One problem noticed in the videos is that his lower teeth are now blue, not silver like on hte original solicitation. For a typical toy I'd say it's no big deal, but when we're talking $600 robots I don't think it's unreasonable to expect that the details match - the extra buck a unit should have been spent to get it right.
Pre-orders direct from Hasbro ended in 2019, but some retailers in Asia and elsewhere were able to secure a supply of these which may still be available for a slight mark-up. I would assume that the nostalgia will run out before they try another giant Unicron toy again - but who knows?

Pitman: A Sega Master System Homebrew for Boulder Dash Fans

  Via SMS Power!: Pitman, a new Sega Master System game. It's not presently being sold on cartridge, but the Boulder Dash-esque colorful homebrew game plays on emulators, ROM carts, and of course your Analogue Mega Sg if you bought one. As of my writing this I've played a few levels and I really like it.

  Via Silent Bob: Here's @ThatKevinSmith reacting to @bearmccreary's Masters of the Universe: Revelation score for the first time. You all aren't ready for how good this show is going to be. He-Man has struggled to find a place in 21st century pop culture outside of nostalgia, but it sure seems like the music sounds like music you'd put in a He-Man cartoon.
Will it be fun, goofy, and/or campy? No idea. Kevin Smith also gave us the daffy and wonderful Clerks: The Animated Series about 20 years ago so if any of that gets mixed up with He-Man it should be pretty great.

It's a reissue of The Black Series 3 3/4-inch figure with slightly sharper details and slightly more saturated blue paint. Of the two releases, it's the better one, but you'd be hard-pressed to tell the difference without a side-by-side comparison of both figures in person. Read the whole review.

Transformers Authentics Barricade from Chile?

  Via TFW2005: Unknown Barricade Authentics/Evergreen (?) Figure shows off what may be a new release. Assuming it's legit, this could be popping up at Walgreens, Dollar General, Five Below, or Family Dollar for $5-$7.
It looks to be inspired by the movie Barricade, but a G1 form factor - it also looks to have more metal pins than some other toys of this size. Will it hit the USA? It remains to be seen!

Four Player Adapter for Atari VCS Exists Now

  Via Bite the Chili Productions: QuadTari - The world's first 4-player adapter for the Atari 2600. Do you need one? No. But it's cool - if you have homebrew games, you can now play four player games. They say a ROM is included for QuadGames, which is great, in theory, except you probably don't live with 3 more people that want to play Atari with you right now.
Other homebrew games are listed that do work with it - but you'll be forgiven for not knowing about them. Some upcoming games are coming up as well, including a RoboTron clone with 2 sticks per player. Not bad for a game console that came out 43 years ago.

  Via 8BitMods: [Preorder] MemCard PRO for PlayStation 1 is a gizmo that has a screen on it that lets you have thousands of memory cards. Will you ever need this many? Probably not, but it's $70 for what may be the last one you'll ever need.
I had one that uploaded from floppy disks back in the day, which probably was ultimately wasteful but it was a neat idea at the time.

Classic PC Game Lemmings Turns 30

  I saw a few social media posts indicating that February 14 was the 30th anniversary of the Amiga release of Lemmings, a monumental PC puzzler that got ported to dang near every console. Game Anim posted Lemmings: 30 Year Anniversary Ð Animation Previz for their tribute, and The Retronauts Podcast did an episode abotu the game in 2019. It's worth a look.
1991 was a pretty monumental year for video games - in the USA, it brought about the release of the Super NES (with Super Mario World, Final Fantasy II, Super Castlevania IV, and so many more) alongside Metroid II for GameBoy and Sonic the Hedgehog's Sega Genesis debut.

Ep 353: The Bathroom Cloaca (VOY S1E1)! We've been listening to their goofy wrap-ups of Star Trek for a few years and can safely say it's probably worth a look if you're interested in listening to something on your commute from the bathroom to the office to the bedroom. They just wrapped an excellent spin on Deep Space Nine, so it's arguably worth a listen if you're interested in such things and are swimming in abundant, near-silent patches of time.
The not-friendly-for-families podcast is a hoot, and usually runs about an hour an installment. There are hundreds of episodes now, too. What else are you going to do, clean your house? Learn a language?

Hyperkin's New GameBoy Replacement Console

  Via Hyperkin Lab: RetroN Sq: HD Gaming Console for Game Boy/Game Boy Color/ Game Boy Advance (Hyper Beach) - Hyperkin and also available in Black and Gold. This is the "Retron Pocket" teased a while ago, and it's $75 with a release date of late March. Is it good? We have no idea.
Supposedly Hyperkin's GameBoy emulation is pretty good, but note this bullet point from their description: ¥ Compatible with Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges via open source software. Compatibility with Game Boy Advance cartridges (beta function). How well is it going to work, and will we get good firmware updates? I don't know. But it does have a slot for updates, and a USB Super NES-style controller. For those of us who assume Analogue may not be re-opening pre-orders on their Pocket, this might be an alternative.

Big Batman Transforms to Batcave

  Via ComicBook.com: Batman Transforming Batcave and RC Batmobile Revealed by Spin Master (Exclusive). This week would have been New York Toy Fair were it not for the continued COVID-19 outbreak, so this 30-inch figure that turns into the Bat-Tech Transforming Batcave probably would've been a big media driver on the news. But it's not, because there's no Toy Fair, but it should be.
They say: The Bat-Tech Transforming Batcave measures over 30 inches and features 10 different areas to play in, including a training area (complete with training dummy), a grappling hook area, a weapons locker, several computer areas, a cell for villains, several platforms, and the main Bat-Computer area. It also features an elevator that connects them all and can move the Batman figure up and down through the levels, and as it moves through it triggers interactive sounds. It is compatible with any of the 4-inch figures and comes with its own exclusive Batman figure.

Game Boy Advance SP Alternate Case
|
|
  Via Boxy Pixel: Game Boy Advance SP Unhinged. This is not a thing you can buy, but rather, a very expensive conversion process. The metal case lets you put the SP guts in a metal case - with a headphone jack! - for about $94. But you also need buttons, possibly a new screen, and other things that could drive up the total cost of gear to $150 or more, not including a functioning SP that you'd need to provide.
It's cool - and would be a fantastic thing for someone to mass-produce. Analogue Pocket is a similar thing slated for production, but after selling out pre-orders in 7 minutes last year it is unknown when or if more will be sold. Also other competing concepts from other manufacturers have so far completely evaporated.
It's worth checking out.

The Muppet Show on Disney+: Omissions and Warnings

  Via the AV Club: 18 episodes of The Muppet Show have content disclaimers on Disney Plus. The variety show was the toast of pop culture for several years and is widely considered to be a cultural milestone - but if you were a kid when it aired, you probably had little idea who a big chunk of the hosts were then. And you probably don't know who they are now, either. Two episodes don't presently appear, several episodes have some material that were cut from the DVDs, and 18 episodes have some sort of disclaimers. (The Vincent Price "You've Got a Friend" number is back, so all is well.)
As it was no doubt inspired by the variety shows of the 1970s, the shows are a little uneven. If anything, the show may be better for the TikTok generation as a lot of the sketches and songs may stand better on their own as a short bit than a full episode, but some have great payoffs - take the Mark Hamill episode, which has appearances by Luke Skywalker, Chewbacca, C-3PO, and R2-D2 during The Empire Strikes Back era. Also it's really funny - even the "bad" stuff is a hoot.
It isn't complete, but it's better than the nothing we've had. And it's way more complete than the wildly hole-filled line-up of Taxi episodes on CBS All Access.

Mexican Aliens and Predator Bootlegs

  Via eBay: RARE TOY MADE IN MEXICO FIGURE XENO-REX ALIEN & PREDATOR ACTION FIGURE. There are lots of figures of Predators painted like Micronauts riding Queen Aliens designed to be rode on like dinosaurs. No packaged ones exist and I genuinely have no idea if it's an art project or what - but they're neat.

Analogue Delays and Updates

 Via Analogue: 2021: Pocket, Bots, Scalpers, Limited Quantities vs Limited Editions and Customer Support - 2/22/21. They acknowledge what's still coming - what's not - and some other problems.
The "when" for more Analogue Pockets was not confirmed - but the NT Mini Noir is confirmed as done. They also are trying to deal with scalpers - an amazing problem to have with clone hardware for very old game consoles.
If you haven't played with the Analogue line, they're pretty great - I have their Super Nt (Super NES) and Mega Sg (Sega Genesis) and they do a great job running cartridges and side-loaded ROMs from indie developers - the Genesis in particular is a treasure trove of microcomputer ports on Itch.io, many of which are free.

 Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Incinerator Trooper (The Vintage Collection). You can get a big one, or at Walmart, you can get the smaller exclusive one. It's good, it has fire with it. It doesn't have the Imperial cog on the backpack, though, but I'd still say get it if you're a fan of either The Force Unleashed or The Mandalorian.  Via MyGrodd: Imaginext Turns 20! Celebrate with New Figures in Throwback Style Packaging are probably why I have to go toy hunting now. Two of the figures - a revised X-Ray Man named FP-636 and a vehicle pilot now named Jett Cosmoblast - come on packaging with gorgeous artwork inspired by 20-year-old Velcro-flapped Imaginext packaging.
Joining them are knights Sir Macelot and Helmievel. Also pirates Shackles McMatey and Blackbellows. You will, of course, wish to purchase them all.

You can win cash! Well, maybe. You can watch it on TV. That's more likely. It'll be on Peacock, another streaming service you don't currently get.

Fry's Electronics Closes Doors

 Via Frys.com: After nearly 36 years in business as the one-stop-shop and online resource for high-tech professionals across nine states and 31 stores, Fry's Electronics, Inc. ("Fry's" or "Company"), has made the difficult decision to shut down its operations and close its business permanently as a result of changes in the retail industry and the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic. The store chain - a huge deal in the 1990s and early 2000s - has been largely emptying slowly over the last six or seven years. The store was filled with empty shelves and, rumor has it, largely consignment items as things like video games, DVDs, and computers were in increasingly short supply.
The chain was famous for its fun facades, often transforming a building into a sci-fi themed shopping destination or a storybook fantasy land. With retail and web operations shutting down, there was no proper "going out of business sale" but if you wandered in a Toys R Us during its final month you no doubt can picture what it looked like - a shrinking selection of products surrounded be a sprawling sea of fixtures. If anyone is going to be purchasing said fixtures or monuments, that would be a fun collection.
