New Transformers Bot Shots Revealed in Catalog
|
If it didn't align with already posted information, I'd assume that this New Bot Shots catalog on TheAllSpark.com was an elaborate April Fool's Joke. Aside from previously seen figures, the only thing weird about it is the total lack of clear chase figures. That and Ironhide seems to share Bumblebee's mold and not Ratchet's.

MOTUC April Reissues Revealed?
|
This is basically informed speculation, and could be an error. But it seems that the MOTUC April reissue slate may have been revealed and if this is correct, Keldor, Orko/Adam, Count Marzo, Tri-Klops, and Metamorpho Man-E-Faces could be the reissues joining Draego-Man and Thunder Punch He-Man this month. Maybe. Stay tuned for more! (For the record, Orko/Adam and Tri-Klops are exceptional.)

MOTUC Tri-Klops Kommentary
|
It's time for another one! The TG Blog #11 Tri-Klops and his fun glowing ring of fun is up and you can find out about action features, toy spoilers, and secret accessories.
Toy spoilers are an interesting concept, one I'm not particularly understanding of. Movies, I can get. But toys? I remember reading on Usenet in the 1990s when Transformers groups were complaining that someone explained how to transform a toy before another user got theirs. The notion of being told what comes in the box that I paid for early doesn't bother me in the slightest, but hey, that's me.

Kickstarter Watch: Now with Leisure Suit Larry
|
A classic! Make Leisure Suit Larry come again! is a new project in Kickstarter that aims to do an HD remake of the classic PC adventure game your parents never would let you play in a million years. It's 25% of the way to the goal, and you can get the game for a pledge as low as $15! The catch? The goal is $500,000, which, honestly, isn't all that bad. A fascinating business model.

|
Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting non-Star Wars Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
I didn't care for this one, mostly because of engineering problems and breakages. The Mattel Masters of the Universe Classics Leech was a tolerable figure, but it's so depressing when figures come with torn accessories, another bent accessory, and paint chipping before you even open the box. So read on, read our Star Wars one too, and come back soon for more!

OMFG! Series 2 Winners Revealed
|
That didn't take long, either! The October Toys crew counted hundreds of votes for over 400 designs and posted the winners. OMFG S2 - Production Thread shows Shirtle, a robot baby, Grimm Gourd (pictured), Puke Knight, and a robo mouth thing based on the logo. So when does the Kickstarter go up? I'm not sure, but I do suggest you support it. Not because it's a cool thing to do, but because it's cheaper-- last time around a $10 pledge got you the 5 figures, but if you waited until after the pledge ended you had to wait a few weeks and pay extra for shipping on top of it.
...and if you want to see a 16bit.com exclusive color, assuming I have the chance to do it, AP or tweet me and let me know. (Unless you tell me to do it I'm a-savin' my money.)

Sudden Restock on MOTUC, New Draego-Man Pics
|
One of the more anticipated figures of the month is Draego-Man, and this Masters of the Universe Classics figure is joined by Thunder Punch He-Man on MattyCollector.com-- as in, pictures, bios, and descriptions. He won't be up for sale for another 10 days.
Want something now? Several figures were restocked including King Hssss, Hordak, Swiftwind, and She-Ra. I'd suggest passing on King Hsss, but I think Hordak and She-Ra are great-- reviews to follow of everybody-- and Swift Wind is mighty impressive despite being a giant colorful girl's toy done up as an action figure.

Outer Space Men: 2.0, SDCC, and Cosmic Creators
|
Proving it is just plain not possible for a toy line to go 3 years without eating its own tail and annoying collectors who really did want to collect them all, we have Four Horsemen OSM News Round-Up: Convention Figures, Reissues confirming that reissues will be improved variations and word on which 3 figures will make the convention circuit and be repainted 2-3 times before the regular painted versions hit. As all successful toy lines will be, forever. Obviously the product will be good, it's just that when you drop about $70 or more per mold to support a small line and help future series come out, well, finding out there will be even more low-run probably high-priced sets just doesn't make you feel very good as a collector or as a fan. Collecting them all is generally not a path that ends in smiles.

Because I Missed It: New Polysics 15th P EP in Japan/iTunes/Amazon
|
In February of this year, Japanese band POLYSICS celebrated their 15th Anniversary with 15th P which is an EP of about 30 minutes available on iTunes and elsewhere. 15 years is a long time-- it's about how long Oingo Boingo's major label contract lasted and they deemed themselves dinosaurs at that point, so it's interesting to see the change in how music has altered longevity and how you pretty much have to trust anybody over 30. Physical copies of the album at importers are about $30-$40.
Notable highlights: Devo cover of Mecha-Mania Boy with vocals by Mark Mothersbaugh. What's not to love? Also Ariga Toisu is packed with little quotations from throughout their catalog, so if you've heard most of their albums you'll recognize a lot of the songs they're referencing in its just-under-5-minute run. The EP (as I listen through it at press time for the first time) seems to be one of their stronger releases since National P and I would go out on a limb and say it's worth the $9 on Amazon or iTunes.
Takeaway from this project: If there's ever a Devo/Polysics supergroup, I will crap my pants and pay whatever the import album price would be. Or pirate it. One of those.

Transformers Bot Shots Wave 2 Hitting Stores Now
|
Over the weekend I found Transformers Bot Shots Wave 2, thus removing any reason I had for leaving the house. In it, you'll find Mirage, Ratchet, Brawl, and the clear Bumblebee. Each was $4.99 at Toys R Us, although with the $4 off any $10 Transformers purchase coupons available at the customer service desk, the price was actually quite good when spread over two transactions. FOTD is booked for most of April, but you'll see these guys pop up either later this month or in May.
Short review: Brawl is basically the Megatron chassis, with a new chest/face piece and a couple of new exterior pieces. The deco and sculpt are remarkable and the "G1" Brawl head has an awesome moustache. Classics, anyone? Mirage is another grab at the Bumblebee mold, with a new chest/head and a new spoiler piece, cast in blue with no rally marks. It actually looks really good, and he has a smirk. Ratchet is the one that you'll want to customize, as his vehicle is mostly white and lacking in detail and Hasbro neglected to give his eyes any paint. They can (and have) done better. Rounding out the wave is Clear Bumblebee which looks like a molded urine sample, but is still quite nifty if you're in to clear plastic toys, as you probably are/should be.

MOTUC Draego-Man Preview at The Fwoosh
|
He must break you! To date the vast majority of Masters of the Universe Classics, save for Mo-Larr, are based on existing 1980s and 2000s characters. So that's why it's so exciting to go to TheFwoosh.com and see Draego-Man in the plastic as he really is the first new non-gag character in the line not based on existing figures, figure prototypes, figure concept art, or cartoon characters. It looks good, and yes, I'm excited. From the look of things the sword might be a little lacking, so I'm probably going to raid the weapons packs, the Spy Monkey store, and/or my Xevoz stash for other gear.

Meet the New Beast? New Japanese Beast Saga Prototype Figure

Maybe! Your pal and mine Sylvain directed me to this Twitpic and as I am barely literate I only have what he told me to go on.
How big is it? No idea. Who's making it? Not sure, but speculation is pointing to BanDai because they own the magazine which the comic appeared. Why does his crotch have fangs, and does this make it a her? Also, not sure yet. Stop asking so many questions! I'm giving you everything I got!

New Games for the Xbox 360 Live Arcade Released
|
Xbox fans, it's time to download Pinball Arcade, a $15/1200-point 2D fighter. Microsoft says:
"Skullgirls is a fast-paced 2-D fighting game that puts you in control of fierce warriors in a Dark Deco world. All-new game systems test the skills of veteran fighting game fans while also making the genre enjoyable and accessible to newcomers. A modern take on classic arcade fighters with a hand-drawn high-definition twist, Skullgirls is a one-of-a-kind, action-packed competition complete with awesome combos and an intriguing backstory."
Also new, the unfortunately named The Splatters for $10/800 points. It's a very colorful and interesting looking puzzler, but it sounds like a bowel problem. Rounding out the week is World Gone Sour for $5/400 points, and it's some sort of Sour Patch Kids advergaming with a twist. And the twist is this time, it's not free like the other ones.

Battle Beasts: New Japan, New USA
|
In case you missed it: Battle Beasts News is a site I run (and have run since 2010) focusing on the Diamond Select Toys Minimates that were first unveiled in 2010. This week there's a lot of new news, including 2 exclusive versions of the ram Vorin and a comic book. Just Go here and you'll see the press releases, pictures, and other tidbits announced over the last couple of days. There are some really cool things to see and if you haven't already ready the comic book preview, do that.
Also new this week is Beast Saga, a new TakaraTomy line of toys which look to be squat figures. It is not known how large they are, but it appears that they may have jointed hips, a rotating chest symbol like Bot Shots, and in the case of the lion, vagina dentata. So far we have few details to go on, but here's everything I've seen so far.

Hunger Games Katniss Barbie Revealed
|
Have you seen it? The Barbie Hunger Games Katniss Everdeen Doll has been revealed, if you're into that sort of thing. Other than NECA's action figures, there aren't a lot of figural things from the movie which is still doing quite well at the US box office. (And if this week's opening movies are any indication, may continue to do quite well.) She's due around August.

Abandoned G.I. Joe Arbco Chemical Playset Concept
|
Check this out! JoeDeclassified.com has an ARBCO Chemical Playset and numerous figure concepts in drawing form to give you an idea what kind of things Hasbro might have done with its lines, had "Pursuit of Cobra" needed them. As far as I know the playset never got very far along-- after all, this is the first we're seeing of it-- so it's cool from a "what might have been" perspective. Which will no doubt lead to many threads of "WHY NOT HASBRO?", to which I say "Successful playsets are so 1980s! Have you seen what Mustafar sells for these days?" Even the Crystal Skull playset is only $30 or so on eBay and it wasn't exactly the most common thing in the world.

More Mysterious New G.I. Joe Figures Surface
|
Last week we saw new figures, and now we see repaints of those figures. JoeDeclassified.com as many new repaints and what appears to be Kwinn which probably means someone's getting an exclusive, someone's got some 'splain' to do, or more of those legendary "eBay exclusive" figures could be coming up real soon. Check 'em out, they look really neat-- particularly the "comic color" Cobra figures!

I don't think I'm out of line when I say Mattel Masters of the Universe Classics Draego-Man may well be one of the best figures of the year, if not Figure of the Year. I know we're only about 31.7% through it and we've still got a couple of major trade shows to get through, but geez, just look at it. It's pretty amazing. G.I. Joe: The Mighty Kwinn
|
Supposedly (and still possibly) cancelled, Pursuit of Cobra Kwinn has appeared as what appears to be a final-ish production figure on JoeDeclassified.com. Is it an exclusive for the club, an upcoming figure, a surprise release for the convention, another infamous eBay lunchtime special, or something else entirely? We don't know. But there are a lot of pictures and he looks pretty awesome in them all! (Although the shorts are a little weird.)

New Fake Knock-Off Punch/Counterpunch
|
It's a fake! Vreenak would know it, and so should you: this CHMS Punch/Counterpunch looks similar to the sold-out collector's club exclusive Transformers toy, but with a few notable differences. For starters, the head is swappable and no longer "transforms" from Autobot to Decepticon. The box is very similar to the club box, and the toy seems to lack the typical markings of good or evil robots. So now that you know it exists? Don't buy it.

Today we look at Anakin Skywalker, a 2012 release which is a redeco of a 2000 figure which wasn't all that great back then, either. Like the other current Anakin figures, it doesn't really fit into the Pod Racer vehicle particularly well either. Oh well. He's a peculiar combination of formerly rare and not all that exciting. Hasbro Avengers Line to get Skrull, Really

Hasbro/Entertainment Earth Reveal Transformers Generations 2012
|
Just in time for Botcon! Hasbro will be making an Transformers Generations Deluxe Figures Wave 1 which as shown at Toy Fair 2012, will include Jazz, Optimus Prime, and Shockwave from the video game Fall of Cybertron. Unsurprisingly/unfortunately, Shockwave will be shortpacked at 2 per box, with the others at 3.
In other, funny news: this guy at TheAllspark found a Custom Transformers Prime Megatron repaint swapped out at Walmart, which I've had the misfortune of finding a few times in other lines. The idea is someone bought something, customized it, and returned it-- which is, on many levels, bizarre.

Art Figure Shirt Day
|
Two more new t-shirts based on awesome designer figures! First up, Paste Apparel is doing an Outhouse based on the OMFG figures which is apparently only going to be made if it gets enough orders. It's black, the art is brown, and it probably isn't a scratch-and-sniff. It's a nice design!
Also new is a shirt based on Stegoforest which is for sale from the creator. There's a tank, a space guy, and a barbarian. So you get one figure and three costumes for $30, which, if you ask me, is worth it because man, that tank thing. You gotta have that tank thing. Transformers: Botcon Was Over The Weekend
|
Over the weekend was BotCon and you can read all about it on other sites.
It looks like there will be two different versions of Fall of Cybertron Bruticus, and the good one's going to be another oversized Comic-Con exclusive. No mention of the Asia-only toys I've seen. The MP-10 Optimus Prime is coming to Toys R Us, which seems to be the best news at the show. Also, the Fan Club is doing a Matty-esque program of exclusive repaints which is either going to make you do cartwheels or send you into a fit of depression. I think the idea is swell and the choices are excellent, but... well... it's been a rough year for the Fan Club. But hot damn, Ultra Mammoth and Slipstream.
The Hasbro panel coverage is required reading, and... well, it's either the best year ever, or ho-hum if you're like me an are an old fart who just wants more "Classics" to play with.
