Lanard Alien Queen at Walmart
|
Via me: Lanard's Aliens Collection Alien Queen has arrived at US Walmarts.
This is a gem.
I found one here in Phoenix for $19.87. Of note, the price scanner said "Please See Associate for Help" but the register rang up at pennies under $20. At least in my area, no other sets were available but we have heard and seen lots of other fans finding the Aliens and mini APCs, to name a few. It's big, purple, and more than a little off-model as Lanard seems committed to being the 21st century Kenner with cheap, good licensed toys from a variety of kid-friendly - or in this case, totally confusing. It doesn't appear to be for any specific game or movie, but there is a 40th Anniversary of Alien logo on the back of the box.
As far as I know, there are no new movie or TV initiatives that this may tie in to, and it's massively oversized relative to the companion figure line. It's a weird mutant, and for $20 it's a pretty large and impressive toy - and well-engineered for a cheapo line. As with other recent Lanard licensed lines, I'd urge you to give these a peek - even if you have no intent to buy. Now where are our Predator toys?
If that weren't enough, Neca's retro classic Berserker Predator and Neomorph Alien also just saw release a few weeks ago in explicitly Kenner style with faux Kenner packaging. They're also good, we're also working on reviews, and you may find them at Target or other online toy shops.

Jazwares Gets G.I. Joe License?
|
Via HISSTANK only so far - no official press releases have surfaced at this time: Jazwares Acquires Hasbro G.I. Joe License. As I write this, a) nobody is at liberty to disclose Hasbro's plans, and b) this is the first I've heard of this brand getting licensed to this company.
If it may include figures, vehicles, roleplay, accessories, masks, hats, glasses, construction, or something else entirely - I don't know, I haven't seen or heard anything beyond this announcement. Jazwares has been really upping their game lately, having bought out Jakks Pacific and having inhabited the shell of the giant Gentle Giant booth at San Diego Comic-Con last year. Also Hasbro licensed MicroMachines to Wicked Cool Toys, so this sort of thing is not at all unprecedented.
Filming on the 2020 G.I. Joe movie supposedly started in October, but it's been quiet - no photos, not much chatter, and the only real big news was that of a delay until October. Assuming all is on schedule, this could be the biggest year for Joes at retail since 2013.

CES Starts Now, Super Retro Champ Is Very 16-Bit
|
Via many: The Super Retro Champ Plays SNES and Sega Genesis Cartridges, Bringing Peace to Retro Gaming.
The portable plays Super NES and Genesis games... and presumably Mega Drive and Super Famicom titles, but we don't know that. Last year's Retro Champ played NES and Famicom games, and I got to see a prototype at Toy Fair where manufacturer My Arcade tends to set up a pretty nice booth. I haven't played on the final model, but these guys' stuff tends to get around - so keep an eye open if you're so inclined. Here's hoping the new one will be there this year.
Every year at CES we see a few new gizmos, the winner of Vaporware Champ for the past few years has been everybody who was working on a GameBoy clone.

CES - Hyperkin's Retron Jr. Plays GameBoy Games
|
Via Hyperkin on Instagram: It's not April Fools this time! Meet the RetroN Jr! It is compatible with #gameboy, #gameboycolor, and #gameboyadvance cartridges. No date or price was given, but it is expected to work with a Super NES-style controller - but there's no Super NES port on the box. Wireless or wired controllers have not been decided upon at this time.
Coverage at Gizmodo shows RCA out, HDMI-out, and power by USB-C. A USB port in the front presumably exists for controllers, and similar Retron devices tend to cost around $50. It looks exciting, as clone hardware specifically used to play GameBoy games tends to be pretty uncommon in the USA - the Retron 5 and GB Boy Colour are two of the better known options.

If you have a Walmart near you, check out the aisles near the action figures. The 2020 Playmobil Scooby Doo line [NYCC 2019 gallery] is starting to roll out - I saw blind bags and the Shaggy/Scooby/Ghost set.
More sets and playsets are on the way - Haunted House, Graveyard, and so on - but this is a nice place to start.

Incoming: Kickstarter for IRENA: Genesis Metal Fury Cartridge
|
Via White Ninja Studio: Kickstarter campaign coming soon for IRENA: Genesis Metal Fury.
The demo was neat, and there's an actual game coming too - there's a post teasing cartridge production. Normally I'd wait for the campaign to post here, but the demo was pretty nifty and I'm going to talk about it some more. "There will be plenty of physical cartridges in stock so that we can get the physical edition of IRENA: Genesis Metal Fury to as any of our fans as possible!" they say - and this is what I like to hear. The campaign is expected to kick off in the spring, so all of us aging kids of the late 1980s and 1990s can pretend that middle age has not yet arrived for another few months, no matter what our hairlines say.

Atari Hotels Coming to 8 US Cities
|
Via AZ15.com: Developer inks deal with Atari for hotels in Phoenix, other cities. What does that even mean? I'm not sure - will rooms have VCS consoles or Retron 77s or something like that? Will the side of the hotel have wood panels? Can you turn the pay-per-view channels on and off really fast to "fry" the adult programming? I have no idea. I hope we see Atari art on the hotel key cards.
The timing is certainly curious, but we do live in an era that does some curious things with licensing and I assume Atari could use a few bucks.

New NES Music Album Cartridge - Chip
|
Via Kickstarter: Full Length NES Music Cart - Goofy Foot: Power Chiptunes. This is interesting - it's a music album cartridge that comes with an audio expansion card that slips in the bottom of your front-loading NES. It says it unlocks Famicom sound channels, which is certainly a new thing. I don't assume it will be necessary for use on the high-def clones these days, but I can't be sure. It will require some modding of your hardware if you wish to use it.
