Star Wars Q&A, Figure of the Day Updated
|
Galactic Hunter has posted a new Q&A column this week! Be sure to click through and read up on the latest! Also, be sure to send in your questions for next week's thrilling update.
Figure of the Day has updated once again! The daily feature on figures you might have but might not-- either way, here's what you've been missing! Spanning from the original Power of the Force series of 1995 to the latest of The Legacy Collection, it's almost like a history lesson!
Today we look at the Dark Trooper figure from a few months ago, and would you believe it's the first "Phase 1" version to get a toy? Go to Figure of the Day for the next update, with the latest installment in our ongoing series!
We are also getting reports of the new Wal-Mart Jabba the Hutt set hitting. We wrote a review and you should check it out.

Pursuit of Cobra Out, Surprisingly Expensive at Wal-Mart
|
Good news: Wal-Mart stores are putting our Pursuit of Cobra vehicles and figures. The bad news: figures are a whopping $9.97, which means that Wal-Mart has elected to charge a large premium on the line much like Toys "R" Us did with the recent Star Wars: The Vintage Collection line. If $9.97 seems to expensive for you, wait for Target, shop online, and generally don't pay it. (Target stores will be charging $6.99, and cases from Entertainment Earth average out to $7.08 per figure.)

Voltron x Thomas = This
|
Dubbed "Voltromas", this amazing Chinese bootleg combines Thomas the Tank Engine with Voltron. The review at Poe Ghostal's Points of Articulation points out that it's fragile, but arguably the most amazing thing you will see this mont. We agree.

Transformers Galleries Galore: Masterpiece, HFTD
|
First up, images from a Chinese Transformers Cybertron Con China reveal Masterpiece Rodimus Prime for the first time. The show itself has a mix of Hasbro and TakaraTomy presence, which makes it unique as most regions have one or the other.
Arguably more exciting was a slide show revealing 2011 classics toys including Scourge, Thunderwing, Perceptor, and tons of other exciting additions you still need to see. Of particular note are the names, like "Special Ops Jazz" and "Turbo Tracks." Also shown for the first time is a Legends-class "Gold Bumblebee." He's painted like Goldbug! The new Lugnut is inspired by the animated character, and also worth a look.
Other galleries include HFTD Insecticon, HFTD Highbrow, and HFTD Blue Fallen. Nice!

Monday Funny Links Worth Your Attention

We found some links worth sharing with you in the funny department.
First, Google Books posted Chunklet's Overrated Book in great detail, but seemingly not the whole thing. Wow. It's much cheaper than paying for it, which you should do anyway. Music fans, check this out.
Second, behold the Clive Clemmons Inappropriate Response Channel, a classic routine from Late Night with Conan O'Brien. It even features TV's Andy Daly in the first part!

Review: Outer Space Men Alpha Phase Metamorpho
|
Metamorpho is the first modern release of the character from the old Colorforms Aliens line, this time as an action figure. Limited somewhere between 300 and 500 pieces, this glow-in-the-dark Alpha Phase "prepaint" features about 12 meaningful points of articulation, Man-E-Faces style face changing, and swappable arms. Fun enough to be worth the $10, but you won't get it that cheap. [ READ THE FULL REVIEW ]

Presumably Exclusive Transformers Scout 2-Packs Revealed
|
Via TFW2005 comes word of a bunch of new Transformers 2-packs, via PDFs of their instructions on Hasbro's own web site.
Blue Maximus, Crosshairs, and Drydock are repaints of Revenge of the Fallen scouts. Meanwhile, Undertow is a redeco of Cybertron Short Round. We're guessing Wal-Mart exclusives, and given the lack of an announcement at Botcon, we're gambling on a November release date. But we don't know this to be fact.

FX Loves Comedy, Possibly You
|
Via The Hollywood reporter come two stories of comedy. One is good. One is interesting.
Story the first: Louis C.K.'s show Louie has been renewed for a second season. It's a quality program worthy of your attention and chuckles.
Story the second: an unofficial Star Trek spoof Alabama is coming from Thomas Lennon and Ben Garant, which means... we don't know what it means. It's certainly a surprise. This probably means Boldly Going Nowhere, a sci-fi comedy from the creative team of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, did exactly that.

Fred Schnieder, Superions to do Xmas Album
|
We've never heard of this site before but we clicked a link that confirmed Fred Schnieder and The Superions are doing a Christmas album. We are not big fans of holiday music, but we're big fans of Fred doing pretty much anything. It's all original stuff, which is good, we guess, but we'd really like to hear him belt out pretty much any classic.

Transformers Hailstorm, Darkmount Shipping; Movie 3-Pack Gallery
|
Our sponsor/corporate overlords Entertainment Earth have received many new Transformers toys including Elita-1, Darkmount, Hailstorm, War for Cybertron Megatron, and others. Many are out of stock, but you should check for current availability.
This also means your local stores are now fair game. Unless you're Canadian, in which case you are most likely screwed.
Also awesome: Challenge at Cybertron Cyclonus, Rodimus, and Galvatron gallery at HKTF. They are gorgeous. The deco seems improved on all three, painting Cyclonus' face does wonders in allowing the detail in the mold express itself rather than fade into the dim grey plastic. Really, the only thing that could be better would be to make Rodimus' hands orange, but this will do just fine-- if we can get some-- and we hope the rumors of it being a US Target exclusive come true.

Halo Reach Edition Xbox Coming To Japan
|
Coming to Japan (and possibly elsewhere) is this Halo Reach Edition Xbox 360, as seen on NCS. This model has a 250GB HD, two controllers, a silver shell, a headset, and the Japanese edition of Halo Reach. We assume something similar with fewer bells and whistles will show up in other countries.

Prototype Possible Volcano Viper Redeco on Ebay
|
A repaint of the Rise of Cobra Mole Pod was planned but generally unreleased-- you'll never see one in the wild unless you're crazy lucky and probably also in Canada. On eBay, a brightly colored Volcano Viper redeco just sold for a whopping $305. It is not yet known if this is a one-off, or a preview of an upcoming exclusive or Pursuit of Cobra release.
You can read a review of the original Volcano Viper-- which you also don't have-- at General's Joes. (And you should.) The going rate of the Lava Pod is surprisingly cheap given that it qualifies as a somewhat rare vehicle, you can get one for $12-$20 before shipping on eBay.

Transformers Custom Repaints Rock, Generations Mini-Cons Out
|
We saw some great custom work last week, and we had to share. First up, Revenge of the Fallen Bludgeon was given a significant makeover, giving the head a much better look and the tank mode an incredibly realistic amount of detail. We approve.
Arguably more involved is Seaspray, which has been given some more G1-friendly coloring and some electronics to boot! It's quite impressive.
As far as new purchases go, it seems Family Dollar is getting new individually carded Mini-Cons for $3.50 each. Never heard of "Family Dollar"? That probably means you live in a great neighborhood, and good for you. The store has a lot of cheap items, but it is not a dollar store (as such). Good hunting, because this batch includes Pan-Handler! (Also Swashplate, Drivetrain, and Break-Neck.)

Playmobil Top Agents Hitting Germany Soon; US Exclusive Africa Now
|
After their new adventurer theme, Playmobil continues its descent into male action toys with Top Agents, due in Germany this month. Flying cars, mountain fortresses, and robot drones await you when the line hits US stores in, at the earliest, about a year from now. The series seems to combine elements of James Bond with M.A.S.K., and is actually one of the most endearing lines in ages-- particularly because they look like toys, and not tiny prop replicas.
On American shelves are no fewer than six repackaged exclusive Africa sets, showing up now at Target. These are remixed and reduced versions of the existing specialty line, so you can-- for example-- get the Rhinoceros and a jeep for $15, but it lacks the cage and the windshield. On the other hand, you save $20. The large safari station has been reduced in size, and some animals appear to be missing from the Target US issues entirely, such as the water buffalo. Happy hunting!

Pursuit of Cobra Commander Clarifications
|
While certain characters in the G.I. Joe: Pursuit of Cobra line are extremely popular, there seems to be a little confusion as to if Cobra Commander is rare or not. The short answer: he's not, look at eBay if you doubt us.
If you look at the casepack ratios posted online, there are actually more Cobra Commanders shipping over the next few waves than other characters. He does have unique packaging, but the quantity of the figure being produced is equal to or greater than numerous other releases. If you want one, get one, but don't be a chump and overpay online-- there's no need! (Not yet, anyway.)
Pricing on the line is all over the place-- some Wal-Mart stores have reduced it to $6.96 to compete with Target's $6.99. Toys "R" Us is at $7.49 per figure.
Also! The voice cast of G.I. Joe Renegades has been revealed, for what it's worth. Nothing specific as to who is who, but it's a start!

Transformers Family Dollar Items Hit, Elite Prime Revealed
|
Did you hear about the new exclusive Million Publishing Elite Guard Optimus Prime from Japan? If you buy the book, you get a chance to buy the toy, but you need to live in Japan-- or have some good friends. Good luck, completeists.
Also, we found all 4 of the Transformers Mini-Cons from this wonderful Pan-Handler wave at Family Dollar. Each was a somewhat pricey $3.50, but well, Pan-Handler. How can you say no to a baby blue robot hobo? Or Hobot?

Even More New US Playmobil Hitting Toys "R" Us Stores
|
Toys "R" Us retail stores and people on eBay are getting in the new $6.99 Playmobil Jumbo Blister Cards. We saw both at lunch yesterday. 5900 includes two pirates, a rowboat, and an adorable little orange octopus with black eyes-- quite unusual for Playmobil as the eyes are typically in very bright colors. 5909 focuses on Dragon Knights with a horse, two figures, and the satisfaction of my not buying it at $6.99.

Figure of the Day has updated once again! The daily feature on figures you might have but might not-- either way, here's what you've been missing! Spanning from the original Power of the Force series of 1995 to the latest of The Legacy Collection, it's almost like a history lesson!
Today we look at the Rebel Trooper figure from the 2003 Saga line-- which means it had one of two heads, of (at least) five total used on this body. Go to Figure of the Day for the next update, with the latest installment in our ongoing series!
Also, Toys "R" Us is running a buy-one-get-one-half-off sale on its Hasbro Star Wars action figures. This would be a good time to get the guys you've been putting off.

G.I. Joe Pursuit of Cobra Wave 3 Packaging
|
A look at the first wave of 2011 packaged Pursuit of Cobra figures has been found, and you can see Duke, Storm Shadow, Snake Eyes, and the Cobra Shock Trooper at ACToys.net.
Duke looks more like a traditional Duke, while the Cobra Shock Trooper looks like an incredibly realistic S.W.A.T.-inspired figure. Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow remain goofy ninjas, although if they wanted to go goofier, we wouldn't complain.

Yet More New Dreamcast Games Coming
|
Despite being pronounced dead about 10 years ago, it seems that Redspot games will continue publishing for the console. Sure, they're low-run games released to other platforms, btu in this Joystiq story you can see why they keep doing what they're doing. Sort of.

Playmobil 2011 (Germany) Catalog Scans
|
A new If you can't wait for 2011 (or 2012), Klickywelt has a preview of tons of new 2011 sets including Specials, newly molded horses, and Super Sets. If you're crazy about horses, it seems they're going for that sub-Breyer horse customer. Most notable, though, is a Samurai figure in the Specials line. We approve. Despite rumors, there don't appear to be any new Western theme sets aside from a Specials figure just yet.
Over on Playmobil's German site, many new products are up for your perusal. The t-shirt on this Female Jogger made us laugh. And we have no beef with this Mongollian warrior.
Also notable, many of the new US sets for 2010 are up on Toysrus.com for your viewing-- adventurers, Safari, Pirates, etc.

A Japanese site Rakuten has posted a new wave of Kabaya Transformers toys, this time focusing on existing toy designs that aren't named Convoy. Ultra Magnus may be based on his recent Titanium design, while Prowl and Jetfire are both clearly modeled after their 2008 and 2007 releases, respectively.

Star Wars Figure of the Day Updated
|
Figure of the Day has updated once again! The daily feature on figures you might have but might not-- either way, here's what you've been missing! Spanning from the original Power of the Force series of 1995 to the latest of The Legacy Collection, it's almost like a history lesson!
Today we look at the Clone Trooper Fives figure from last year's Wal-Mart exclusive 2-packs. He's a basic white clone, but with a "5" on his head and a beard. Pretty cool, or pretty cheap? Or both? Go to Figure of the Day for the next update, with the latest installment in our ongoing series!
Also, we spotted the new Toys "R" Us exclusive Clone Wars "Rise of Boba Fett" Battle Pack. We snapped some quick pictures showcasing where a Carbonite block could go, should Hasbro bow to fan demand for the inevitable repaint in The Empire Strikes Back colors.

G.I. Joe Original Pimp Destro Sold, Custom CAT
|
Since they so rarely come up we thought we'd share this auction for a carded Pimp Destro which recently ended for $2,500. There are thought to be about 100 known authentic packaged samples of this set.
Also amusing was this clever repaint of the Legends Transformers Ravage as a Cobra C.A.T., which goes well with your B.A.T. army. Hasbro, you should totally make these.

Stickers Turn G.I. Joe Vehicle into M.A.S.K. Vehicle
|
One of our favorite (virtually) ignored 1980s toy lines is M.A.S.K., so we were quite taken with this Cobra Steel Crusher to M.A.S.K. Jackhammer Sticker Kit which sells for $10. While hardly cheap, it's a very creative enterprise and showcases a great way to repurpose some of the more civilian molds in the G.I. Joe line. Here's hoping to see more!

Lost Comedy Album from The State To See Rhino Handmade Release
|
The famous (almost) Rhino Handmade label will be releasing Comedy For Gracious Living by The State which, as of a few months ago, was talked up as a lost artifact that you may as well go pirate-- and now they're releasing it. Having heard it, it's a sort of a slog-- but fans of the show may enjoy it. It will be $19.98 and according to the site, likely exclusive to online sales. (Although we have seen Rhino Handmade CDs pop up in new bins at better record stores.)

Ohio Man Hates Fun, Toys For Collectors
|
Ask the teacher for more homework, put on that dorky sweater your mom wants, and then be the subject of the headline Man Raises Concerns Over 'Serial Killer' Doll from a recent news story in Ohio. The crux of it: he doesn't like seeing Dexter at Toys "R" Us-- given that Toys "R" Us carries a number of adult-friendly action figure lines, particularly from NECA and McFarlane Toys, this is sort of surprising given the nature of so much of the stuff they sell.
...also it is not a doll. It is an action figure. Haven't we been over this, people with meaningful things to do all day?
Also sold at Toys "R" Us: the murderous Joker, the genocidal Darth Vader, the Nazi Red Skull, and a number of "rated M" video games. And there are Tiger Woods figures on the closeout aisle. Oh, and a complete line of toys where 50% of the releases are terrorists-- it's called G.I. Joe. Speaking of...

Awesome G.I. Joe Ice Cutter Vehicle Galleries
|
A few sites linked to this site we've never heard of. Abang.com has an awesome in- and out-of-box gallery of the Cobra Ice Cutter that reveals things like big moving guns and a giant rear wheel, plus a roomy interior for one of your favorite small plastic terrorists from Cobra. We don't think we'd mind seeing swamp-themed repaints, either.
Later, we were pointed out to another great gallery of this toy on ACtoys.net, which shows off other elements of it. There are also a few on eBay but you'll note they're more than the $14.99 SRP.

Awesome Lost Star Trek Next Gen Casting Memo

Did you know there were a lot of strange casting possibilities for Star Trek: The Next Generation? Over at Trekmovie.com is an amazing internal memo from Paramount with some weird choices. Wesley Snipes for Geordi LaForge? Rosalind Chao for Tasha Yar? Logan's Run's Jenny Augutter as Dr. Crusher? And Fun House's own J.D. Roth as Wesley Crusher? You gotta read this.

Mattel DC Universe Wave 15 Gets Major Assortment Change
|
In what may be inside baseball for you (but is our "day job" to us), our friends (ourselves) at Entertainment Earth have a revised case for DC Universe Wave 15 meaning that the first two cases will not be produced. This revised mix has fewer total figures, but stores (or you) will get the entire assortment of characters (variants not guaranteed) in a single box, rather than spreading it across two with added repacks of Batman, Superman, and so forth. So yeah, if you collect all the figures, this may be a good bet for you-- or a sign that all figures should be of roughly equal rarity, except Martian Manhunter (and/or his variant) whose ratios were not disclosed.
Figures in the assortment include OMAC, Golden Pharaoh, and the bizarre but neat Sinestro Corps Yellow Lantern Batman.

Silpheed SA-77 Lancer Model Kit
|
Apparently NCS continues to have all the big news. A Japanese import SA-77 Lancer Model Kit from Silpheed is coming for $60 later this year. It's about 10-inches long and will likely be a whole lot more expensive in 1-2 years, so if you're a Sega-CD or Mega-CD fan, and you know what this is, you might want to grab one.

Masterpiece Rodimus Fully Revealed, Yellow Seaspray
|
A ton-- and we mean ton-- of new Japanese Transformers were revealed at Japan's C3X Hobby Show last weekend. As usual, they look different (and arguably better) than their US counterparts. Seaspray is now yellow rather than bronze/gold, and most movie characters seem closer to their inspiration. Hubcap looks pretty much the same though, so no worries there.
>More important (and more ambitious) are numerous galleries of Rodimus Convoy, now coming as a Masterpiece. What's really amazing is that the toy has four modes-- Hot Rod's car and robot, plus Rodimus Prime's vehicle and robot. It may be close to $200, but looking at it, you can pretty much see why.

New Freezepop Tour, Album Coming
|
Typically we present material for music nerds, this is, arguably, music for nerds. Electronic group Freezepop has a preview track up from its next album. "Imaginary Friends" hits November 9, and a tour starts here in Arizona in September. So, like the Stan Ridgway show last weekend, we can expect the band to get drunk and forget its lyrics, making for an arguably superior show. (We love you, Stan.) The track "Magnetic" may be downloaded in exchange for a valid email address.

Housekeeping: G.I. Joe Pursuit, 25th Anniversary Checklists
|
Because you've asked for it, we added a Pursuit of Cobra Checklist with all of the confirmed items for 2010 and 2011 that we did not forget (so far). There are 8 more figures and 8 more vehicles (with figures) as of yet unreleased.
Also updated was our long-abandoned 25th Anniversary checklist, which we now believe is pretty much up to date. You may correct us at your leisure. (We're aware it has a few style errors.)
You also asked for a Rise of Cobra checklist-- this may be a ways off, but we'll get that done next. It will be 3 3/4-inch specific, as the periphery items are many and generally uninteresting.
