MiSTer Portable Prototypes
|
Via @MultisystemFPGA: Do people want a handheld #MiSTerFPGA #Multisystem?
@RichRap3D
started experimenting with the idea in 2020 and it has now evolved through 3 fully working prototypes. There is plenty of scope for injection moulding, refinements and analogue controls but it's coming along nicely. It's the size of an Atari Lynx and pretty chunky - and it's neat.
No word yet on pricing, availability, or viability as a consumer product. Analogue's Pocket console is still set for 2023 (for new pre-orders), and at press time has no ability to sideload your own ROMs on it. (But you can get .pocket files running on it.) There are also dozens of emulator handhelds to be bought if you need something sooner.

Blue Glow Red Shift Janet UFO Vinyl Toy
|
Via Orbitdyne:
Red Shift Edition - Flying Saucer "Janet" - Vinyl Sofubi Toy. It's about 6-inches across and has glitter and glow in it.
It's a follow-up to the HEAP robot, which is also pretty excellent. They're low-run toys, and each one is a little different - give 'em a look.

Review: Hasbro Transformers Generations War for Cybertron Kingdom Leader Galvatron Action Figure
|
Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
Good, and you've got options! The Hasbro Transformers Generations War for Cybertron Kingdom Leader Galvatron Action Figure has battle-damage paint, but the Legacy one in stores now doesn't - and you may be able to find the latter. It's a pretty good, if troubled figure. Mine had bad shoulders that needed fixing, hopefully yours does not. So read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!

MiSTer Adds Game Boy and Game Boy Advance Rumble Support
|
Via the MiSTer Project: GBA: - hook up rumble for wario ware (Kitrinx)
- add Drill Dozer to rumble
That's good news! I haven't tested it myself yet, but those are just a couple of the new updates from the last few days.
This may be particularly exciting because if you have your real original release of Wario Ware Twisted!, the rumble just plain stopped working in a lot of cases - you can replace it with a cheap cell phone motor, though. This may be the first time a lot of players tried it on a monitor with rumble - Game Cube owners with a Game Boy Player could not play the game with a controller since the motor to control the game was in the actual cartridge. This should be fun.

Star Wars Review: Mace Windu (Redux, The Vintage Collection)
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Mace Windu (Redux, The Vintage Collection). It's a redeco of a retool whose bones start back at 2007. At the time it was pretty good - today it's a little stiff, with eyebrows that don't quite look right, and the lightsaber hilt doesn't plug into the belt due to size issues. Read the whole review.

Adam's Star Wars Newsletter #8 - May Bonanza Part 1
|
Galactic Hunter has posted a Adam's Star Wars Newsletter #8! All the announcements you missed because who wants to watch 1 hour of video for 3 minutes of names? I don't. New Obi-Wan Kenobi, Expanded Universe, The Mandalorian, and other toys have been announced - many of which just went up for pre-order. But we're not going to make you watch someone ramble on camera to find out what they are - I typed up all the names in the newsletter so you can skim it while you're on the bus, or the toilet. Take care to not confuse the two. We expect even more announcements at Star Wars Celebration in just a few weeks. Read it here!

Freezepop Supporters - Another New Single
|
From Freezepop: Rare Bird (The Maxi-Single). If you backed their Kickstarter a few years ago, you may already have an email telling you how to download it for free. (Otherwise it's $5.)
The album took about four years to deliver, but they have since followed up with lots of remixes and special bonus tracks - which is incredibly welcome.

Funko Sold to eBay... and Bob Iger and Rich Paul
|
From CNBC: Bob Iger, eBay, sports agent Rich Paul, Chernin Group team up to buy 25% stake in toy maker Funko.
The story adds "As part of the investment, eBay and Funko agreed to make eBay the preferred secondary market for Funko products." Now I have no idea what that really means, but sports teams do weird things. In Phoenix, Streets of New York Pizza is "the official pizza of the Phoenix Suns." I don't think it changed anybody's life, but literal eBay exclusives are now possible and those have historically been scarce. Hasbro did do one for Star Wars: Jedi Force just over 15 years ago, with a weird orange-stripe X-wing, but you'll be forgiven for not remembering it because nobody does.
As a wildly successful company - the Pop! Vinyl figure has effectively done for character-based collectibles what Hot Wheels (and Matchbox) did for collectible cars - it's interesting to see they still view lots and lots of untapped potential in the toy brand. And indeed there are tons of characters and licenses that haven't been made yet, or licenses that haven't been signed yet - Nintendo, for example, is unrepresented outside Pokemon. There are quite a few classic TV shows that have yet to hit the format, scores of musicians, armies of advertising mascots, and goodness knows what cult revivals await us. Until fans eventually run out of space... and that could be years away.

Review: Hasbro Transformers Studio Series 86 Coronation Starscream
|
Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
An accesory kit with a figure! The Hasbro Transformers Studio Series 86 Coronation Starscream is probably worth buying just for the cape, pads, crown, and throne - which is good, particularly if you bought Starscream back in 2020. This rerelease has slightly different paint and new jointed finger hands, so it might be worth getting anyway. So read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!

Amazon Gets Transformers Wreck 'n Rule Collection
|
Via Amazon: Transformers Generations Legacy Wreck ÔN Rule Collection Comic Universe Impactor and Spindle, Amazon Exclusive, Ages 8 and Up, 5.5-inch. So for those keeping track at home, this is the fourth Impactor to use this basic mold - but there's a new head and new shoulder cannon. It's $45 because there's also a new Spinosaurus skeleton character named Spindle included.
The sound you hear is a bunch of a fans rushing to dig out their previous Impactors to sell before the market falls out.

Star Wars Review: Pit Droid (Droid Depot set, The Black Series)
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Pit Droid (Droid Depot set, The Black Series). It's small, but impressive. It's a must-have, but also in a $75 exclusive box of mostly repaints. Should you get it? I think so. But it may not be worth your expense, unless you dig droids, and you probably do. Read the whole review.

Amazon Transformers Leadfoot and Masterdominus Revealed
|
From Amazon: Transformers Generations Legacy Wreck 'N Rule Collection G2 Universe Leadfoot and Masterdominus, Amazon Exclusive, Ages 8 and Up, 5.5-inch. And if you order through that affiliate link, I might get a cut of the sale to put toward hosting costs.
The Mammoth is based on an existing ceratopsian mold with new heads and weapons, while Leadfoot takes the Mirage mold, makes some adjustments, and paints him to look sort of like the Wrecker in the Regeneration One comics you totally didn't skip reading. At $45, the set is slightly cheaper than a couple of boxed single Deluxe guys.
Presumably more will be up if you're reading this after 10:00 AM Pacific on Wednesday.

Review: Fisher-Price Imaginext Series 8 Collectible Figures Woodland Mystic
|
Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
Old! The Fisher-Price Imaginext Series 8 Collectible Figures Woodland Mystic is a figure that's probably long gone from stores by now, but something I stumbled on kind of after the fact at a grocery store. That's still not a bad place to look for stuff. So read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!

Amazon Transformers Springer Revealed
|
From Amazon: Transformers Generations Legacy Wreck ÔN Rule Collection Autobot Springer, Amazon Exclusive, Ages 8 and Up, 7-inch . And if you order through that affiliate link, I might get a cut of the sale to put toward hosting costs.
The Springer is a repaint of the Siege one - which was good - and now it's in comic/toy colors. It looks surprisingly different from the 2019 version, and I daresay it's probably worth getting again.
Presumably more will be up if you're reading this after 10:00 AM Pacific on Wednesday.

May 13, 2022 |
Star Wars Review: CB-23 (Droid Depot set, The Black Series)

Amazon Transformers Wrecker Bulkhead Revealed
|
From Amazon: Transformers Generations Legacy Wreck 'N Rule Collection Prime Universe Bulkhead, Amazon Exclusive, Ages 8 and Up, 7-inch. He's got a hammer, and camo!
The Bulkhead is a repaint of the Legacy one - and it's excellent. This one is a different shade of green with camo on it, and the set adds a hammer in addition to a black gun (instead of blue.) The silver wrecking ball is still there, too.

Amazon Transformers Wrecker Twin Twist Revealed
|
From Amazon: Transformers Generations Legacy Wreck 'N Rule Collection Diaclone Universe Twin Twist, Amazon Exclusive, Ages 8 and Up, 5.5-inch. He's in Diaclone colors!
The Twin Twist is a repaint of the Titans Return one - the Headmaster/Titan Master construction is a lot of fun and the original release from five years ago is somewhat expensive. At $24.99, this one is slightly cheaper.

New Glyos Drop From Onell Design
|
Via the Glyos News Dump: Glyos Onell Design May 15 2022 Drop Menu.
A mighty blue Heavy Armor Sincroborg Ennosarc seems to be the centerpiece of a really robust series, filled with silvers, purples, and more. New printings, a crossover figure, and lots of build parts make this wave stand out.

TimMee Battle Mountain - Now in Tan
|
Via Amazon/TimMee Toys: TimMee Desert Mountain Scenery - Figure Display or Play Terrain - Made in USA. This has been available in grey for years - I've got one and love it - and I didn't realize there's a tan edition now. It's $30 today, I paid $21.80 back in 2013 - that's inflation for you. Mine is currently overrun with glowing Glyos figures.
There's also a TimMee Galaxy Laser Team Space Figures - Tan vs Olive Green Set that I missed - I have the green/blue, black/white, and orange/red sets. I recommend buying one of 'em, but as to which, that's your call - they're basically knock-off Star Wars designs and they're great.

Review: Hasbro Transformers Buzzworthy Bumblebee Legacy Deluxe Silverstreak Action Figure
|
Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
In stores now! The Hasbro Transformers Buzzworthy Bumblebee Legacy Deluxe Silverstreak Action Figure is a sharp repaint of Bluestreak, who shares molds with Barricade, Prowl, and Smokescreen. This one is pretty sharp and not a common coloring for these molds, so take a look and check your store for availability - the yellow on the crest varies a bit from figure to figure. So read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!

Walmart Transformers Legacy Beast Pre-Orders Delayed
|
Via Walmart: Transformers Legacy Deluxe Sandstorm, Nightprowler, and Buzzsaw delayed. While these items are showing up in US stores, a number of people (myself included) got email delay notices on their pre-orders, moving from May 18 to July 20. And then another later to "some time between May 18 and July 20."
As such, don't be shocked if you see these in stores, and also if you try to cancel your pre-order and can't. People are finding these, so check your order status and remember your mileage may vary because some people have purchased these already in a store.

Star Wars Review: Fennec Shand (The Vintage Collection)
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Fennec Shand (The Vintage Collection). This is one of the better figures - great likeness, excellent articulation, this is a figure that shows considerable improvement over the figures we got just five to ten years ago. You should get this one - it's a good character, a good costume, and a fantastic figure that will put a lot of other releases to shame. Read the whole review.

Review: Playmobil "Fi?ures" Figures Day of the Dead Man
|
Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
It's a dead man's party! The Playmobil "Fi?ures" Figures Day of the Dead Man is a figure that's unsurprisingly more expensive when people sell identified figures, because it's awesome. The level of painted detail is excellent, with lots of gold accents, bone markings, a belt, and a uniquely painted face that is going to go well in pretty much any figure collection. So read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!

Star Wars Review: Death Watch Mandalorian (The Vintage Collection)
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Death Watch Mandalorian (The Vintage Collection). It's a new sculpt and one of Habsro's very best. The range of motion is great, the center of gravity is good, and the joints move pretty freely so you won't feel "stuck" in a weird position. You'll love it. Buy an army. Read the whole review.

Review: Hasbro Transformers Studio Series 86 Perceptor
|
Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
Pretty dang good! The Hasbro Transformers Studio Series 86 Perceptor is still hitting stores with 3 movie guys, and he's usually the first one to go. While not quite as robust as the Titans Return toy, it's a surprisingly fun action figure that contorts into a decent but non-working toy microscope. So read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!

Wheeljack from Transformers Authentics Hitting USA
|
Via me on Twitter: Work in progress for FOTD, it's Transformers Authentics Alpha Wheeljack. He's pretty good - Bumblebee and Optimus were on the lower end, Wheeljack's on the higher end. The $11 figure is about the same size as current Voyagers and Leaders, and is pretty fun if you can find him. I got one at a Fry's Marketplace grocery store over the weekend.
The Authentics toys are mostly sold overseas, but US Food/Drug/Value stores stock them. Hasbro tends to only put about one or two new molds per year in its Alpha and Bravo size classes, which make them easy/cheap to collect, also because pretty much nobody cares about them you may actually find them. He'll be in Figure of the Day soon, but for $10.99 I'd say go run out and get one.

MiSTer Saturn Core Coming Along
|
Via GitHub and elsewhere: Saturn_MiSTer. You can grab it and compile it. There are single and dual SDRAM builds, and word on the street has it that it loads and plays a lot of games fairly well. (I haven't tested it yet.)
This probably means you/I should get a Sega Saturn controller adapter cable now. USB Sega Saturn controllers are cheap and widely available, but for those of us with the 3D Analog pads or Fight Sticks, well. They're good.

Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022 Redux, The Vintage Collection). It's a repaint of a fairly old figure, and it arguably looks a little better - but, again, it is a figure from 2011. Review: Hasbro Transformers Studio Series Kup Action Figure
|
Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
Maybe still in a weird store near you! The Hasbro Transformers Studio Series Kup Action Figure is not as good as the Buzzworthy version, but as the first release of the mold it does warrant a look. He has a weird decidedly not-cartoony chest, but also a nifty Energon Goodies dispenser and a perfectly nice blaster - plus limbs you can yank off. This makes him fun to play around with. So read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!
