Review: Super7 Devo New Traditionalists Gerald Casale ReAction Figure
|
Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
New! This Super7 Devo New Traditionalists Gerald Casale ReAction Figure is a recent release, but the coloring and accessory look like something that should have been on shelves a while ago - he's great hanging around your Adventure People. Do read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!

Playmobil Freebie in the UK
|
Via our pal Philip but also BirdsEye: FREE Playmobil Mini Captain when you buy 2 packs of mini fish fingers. If you'e in the UK or Republic of Ireland, you can get this exclusive figure. And if you get more than one, you can send one my way.
Apparently you just need to upload receipts, which is a heck of a way to do a toy mail-in offer. The last time I sent away for a mail-in figure for the US, I believe you needed stickers and a check that was probably about as much as the cost of the item plus shipping.

Star Wars Review: Darth Maul (The Retro Collection)
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Darth Maul (The Retro Collection). To celebrate 25 years of the movie, as tomorrow is 25 years of Midnight Madness, we're going to review this 6-pack - currently at Target - until we look at 'em all. Maul's details are a little soft, but he has a better pose and is generally interesting to fuss with. He can't fit in the Sith Infiltrator though. Read the whole review.

Star Trek For Sale? Sony Eyeing Paramount
|
Via Variety: Sony Pictures, Apollo Offer to Buy Paramount Global for $26 Billion in Cash . There have been many speculators anticipating that Apple, Netflix, and Amazon would either buy other streamers (and media companies) or they would begin to merge to compete with the bigger conglomerates - and here's another one. " Joint bid comes as media company's board is considering merger deal with Skydance Media," the subhead says, but it could mean stuff could be licensed to other platforms where it could make more money (that's good) or production could be reduced because you're probably going to get about as much of a kick from a 2-hour movie or special as you will from a relatively short season of 10 episodes (that's bad), and none of those are likely to do much to help you sell more toys to fans.
Will anything come of it? I have no idea - but with fewer voices in media, more outlets, and less money to go around in a post-three-networks world, I assume whatever comes to pass will not result in 26 episodes of a season ever again.

|
Ad: Pre-order the Star Wars The Black Series Boba Fett Helmet Prop Replica! This 2020 release brings you all the fun and detail of a high-end prop replica at a price that's not all that bad. It's supposed to be a toy, but the articulated rangefinder and heavy weathering means it'll look great in your IKEA cases, and it won't be obvious that what you have isn't a high-end replica.
You can also order the Transformers Hot Wheels Optimus Prime Orion Truck 1:64 Scale Die-Cast Metal Vehicle.

Classic Review: Hasbro Battle Beasts Rainbow Sam
|
A classic! I've written over 5,000 action figure reviews since 2006, so I'm going to toot my own horn with classic Figure of the Day.
Posted ten years ago today! The Hasbro Battle Beasts Rainbow Sam came out in 1988, and today, he's kind of expensive. Such is inflation and, apparently, enough collectors who actually remember Battle Beasts. I like it. Read on!
Come back tomorrow for an all-new review!

Skeletor & Demogorgon Set Hitting
|
Via me: Target's Masters of the Universe x Stranger Things Skeletor and Demogorgon Action Figure Set is available for $34.99 but, for some reason, isn't available online for delivery or in-store pick-up. Or inventory checking - it might be on the pegs. It might not. You should go check because it's a pretty nice set. There's absolutely no reason to make a Demogorgon from Beast Man and new Moss Man parts, but this is the sort of thing that, if made by some toy bootleg custom guy on Instagram, you'd probably be over the moon and shell out a hundred bucks for it. I'd like to see some more crossovers like this.
It's also worth noting that some Target stores also have the Rulers of the Sun 3-pack with Holographo, Kitko, and Zap-Man for around $15. (It was $50.) You might also see Sla'ker, too, so have fun hunting this week.

Star Wars Review: Jar Jar Binks (The Retro Collection)
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Jar Jar Binks (The Retro Collection). I have been seeing a steady trickle of this figure at Target, where it's an exclusive closed-box six pack with six individually carded figures inside. This is one of the better ones - his hands are more modernized than most retro figures, but he's still pretty charming and fits in more Mini-Rigs than I anticipated. Read the whole review.

|
Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
New! This Fisher-Price Imaginext DC Super Friends Series 1 Collectible Figures Swamp Thing Action Figure is probably hanging on a peg at a Target near you for five bucks - but it's in a foil mystery bag, so you might have to do some work to find one. It's bright. Do read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!

Steve Albini Dead at 61
|
Via Pitchfork and elsewhere: Steve Albini, Storied Producer and Icon of the Rock Underground, Dies at 61. He's most famous for a lot of things - engineering In Utero for Nirvana, recording albums for the likes of Man or Astro-Man? and Fred Schneider and The Pixies and Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and much more, playing in the bands Big Black and Shellac, and more.
Shellac has a new album due in about a week, To All Trains, and who the heck knows what else he was working on.
(The image is from the legendary Chunklet #15, one of very few issues of an utterly fantastic magazine that mostly went over my head at the time because you've gotta do your homework to understand most of it.)

Via Nintendo: Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition Ð Deluxe Set. The $60 physical version has a non-functioning gold NES cartridge, 13 art cards, and 5 pins - which arguably makes it interesting for what appears to be a remix of NES Remix. It sees release July 18.

Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Qui-Gon Jinn (The Retro Collection). Star Wars Review: Queen Amidala (The Retro Collection)
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Queen Amidala (The Retro Collection). She's in that six pack at Target you may find now, and has a lot of very 1980s details like the wavy fabric pattern on her leg interiors as well as the Leia-ish poses of her hands. She also has some thing no original figure had, like the extended collar element and her long hair. Overall, it's a pretty great figure. Read the whole review.

Hot Wheels x Transformers Transforming Optimus Prime
|
Via Mattel Creations: Hot Wheels Transformers Optimus Prime. The 1:64 scale truck - roughly the same size as Hot Wheels cars and Hasbro's Spy Changers and GoBots from G2 - has a metal body, accessories, and Spectraflame paint. It's fancy, but also priced $10 above the Missing Link cab-only toy which is taller and has slightly more articulation and accessories.
Hasbro rarely approves transforming toys to licensees - that may be why this item has a higher retail price. A non-transforming Transformers Hot Wheels Optimus Prime Truck 1:64 Scale Die-Cast Metal Vehicle is also coming, complete with trailer, for under ten bucks too, which may be better for those wanting something for their scale cities and tracks.

Star Wars Review: Battle Droid (The Retro Collection)
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Battle Droid (The Retro Collection). This one's a little weird - the sculpt looks similar to the 1999 figures, but the backpack took design cues from Boba Fett. It's melting into the back, and while it looks weird I do enjoy the design decision as it's based on an actual Kenner product. Also the Battle Droid has a far more interesting pose than most Retro figures, with a bent elbow that gives him a lot of personality. Read the whole review.

Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
New! The Hasbro Transformers Legacy United Deluxe Cyberverse Universe Windblade Action Figure is a new version of a popular character - Windblade toys tend to do pretty well, and we haven't had a "collector" one for a few years. Star Wars Review: Obi-Wan Kenobi (The Retro Collection)
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Obi-Wan Kenobi (The Retro Collection). While a retro figure, this one also seems to have trace amounts of modern figures - he looks like some of the 5-jointed figures from about 12-13 years ago, but does some unique things like sculpts the Padawan braid as a part of his shoulder. He's in that six pack that seems to be available still at a Target near you, or across town, as they seem to be selling just fine around here. Read the whole review.

Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: LOM-Series Protocol Droid (Black, Droid Factory). Atari Rolls Up Intellivision
|
Via Atari: ATARI ACQUIRES INTELLIVISION BRAND. Right now, they're selling t-shirts, but this probably is related to the whole IP gold rush in recent years. Atari previously bought Stern (they of Berzerk and Frenzy), Nacelle bought Biker Mice from Mars and Robo-Force and many others, Disney bought Marvel and Star Wars... you see where this is all going. Conglom-O is coming.
They say "The purchase includes the rights to more than 200 titles from the Intellivision portfolio and the Intellivision trademarks."
There's no new software or hardware to speak of, but this is probably the future of the business.

Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Stormtrooper (Epic Hero Series). It looks sort of like a 1990s POTF2 figure, but with slightly less bulky proportions. The head is small, the blaster is huge, and it's actually quite charming. I'd like more of them. Read the whole review.

LEGO The Legend of Zelda Great Deku Tree 2-in-1

Via LEGO: Great Deku Tree 2-in-1. This $299.99 set has 2,500 pieces and can build either Breath of the Wild or The Ocarina of Time versions of the plant. It also has minifigures for both eras.
LEGO expects delivery in September and the page has turnarounds and pictures galore. I'm amazed they did it. But being old, I'd probably only buy something from the 8- or 16-bit eras at this point - it looks spectacular though.
