Walmart Plus - Trying Its Own Amazon.com Service

WalmartPocketVia Walmart and lots of press outlets: Walmart introduces Walmart Plus, a new membership program for $98 a year. It's Amazon Prime, but arguably not as robust of a service.

I'm not sure what the killer app is for such a membership - but as it is, Walmart's free next-day delivery starts at $35, and you get 5 cents off a gallon of gas. Is it better than going to the store? I mean... right now, sure, but until there's some big toy special those of us who are always going to toy stores (in normal times) anyway might not see much of a benefit here. This of course means it will be a tremendous $98 per year success.

Nintendo - New NES Dead Tomb

NintendoDead TombVia Limited Run Games: Dead Tomb for NES. It looks sort of like a PC adventure game, and that can be good - it also says "Acclaim" on it... which his not usually always great. It goes up 10 AM Eastern on Friday... and again at 6 PM.

Their tweet says: "Based on Temporel Inc, an obscure (and lost-to-time) Videoway adventure game, DEAD TOMB gets a Limited Run for the NES this Friday, September 4 at 10am & 6pm ET. Each physical copy comes with a themed sticker sheet and our NES cart dust sleeve!"

I am unsure why the "Acclaim" name is being used, but I did read that it's based on an obscure Canadian cable box game. Which raises all sorts o questions. the original game is "Temporel Inc." It's also set to be ported to an HDMI ColecoVision clone called the CollectorVision Phoenix, but it does not seem that is available to purchase at this time.

Shantae Returns to GameBoy Color - September 11

ImaginextTrainVia Limited Run Games on Instagram: Earlier this morning, we announced release dates for Shantae on GBC, Shantae on Switch, and Shantae: Risky's Revenge on Switch. All three games will be available as Standard or Collector's Editions in a four-week open pre-order, starting at 10am ET on Friday, September 11!

The game is legendary for being good, rare, and expensive due to being released after the GameBoy Advance. As such, this is probably the first crack you've had at it since hearing it was a good one. Pricing is currently unknown. Next stop: hopefully Ninja Five-O.

Takara-Tomy Repaints Transformers Volcanicus as... Volcanicus

TransformersDinobot ReduxVia Takara-Tomy: Generations Selects Volcanicus. The page says "Domestic shipping (Japan) only" but most of these items have been exported to other markets via Hasbro Pulse.

The original team from Power of the Primes was four $17 deluxe toys and a $25 Voyager toy - if memory serves. This new boxed set is $200. New paint is inclued, as are two large swords and a couple of new blasters and feet. Is it worth the extra twice-as-much? I'd say no - but it may be worthwhile if you missed the previous incarnation of the team and believe Hasbro will take decades to revisit these guys once again. I'm on the fence myself - I was expecting a new team set to be $160-$180 if there was little or no new tooling.

Imaginext Dinos from Jurassic World Still Coming

ImaginextRhiyesVia Amazon: Fisher-Price Imaginext Jurassic World Pachyrhinosaurus & Lowery (that's an affiliate link) is in stock with the biggest mug accessory I've ever seen. Transformers - Shattered Glass Joins Selects

TransformersNew and Old StuffVia Hasbro and Entertainment Earth and other online toy sellers: Transformers Generations Selects Shattered Glass Optimus Prime and Ratchet 2-Pack - Exclusive. This is technically the first mass-produced release of either character as a wide-release toy from Hasbro. Ratchet previously existed as a custom class toy from BotCon, while 2 Optimus Primes were done for BotCon, and a model kit, and an overseas-only Masterpiece toy. This is probably the first and definitely cheapest crack most fans have at either character, and you get both for $50

Offer expires while you wait. At this time there are no known plans to do additional Shattered Glass toys or characters, but you can read about them on TFWiki.

You can see some interesting similarities and changes.

There are two versions, one of which costs more and seemingly has bonus parts. It's in the $280-$300 range and will no doubt be at an importer near you soon.

Nintendo - New NES Doodle World Launched & Funded

NintendoDoodle WorldVia Kickstarter: Doodle World for NES. It went up earlier today and got funded immediately - but some of the "early bird" tiers are still there, and it's only $35 for a bare cart, or $10 for a ROM. Boxed, it's $50-$55.

In the late 1980s most new NES games were around $40 with some at $50. Adjusted for inflation, that $44.99 copy of Mega Man 2 at Babbage's in June of 1989 would be $94.01. Which is downright sobering and explains why you maybe got a game for your birthday or maybe a major holiday if you were lucky. With that in mind, $50ish for a new game today is surprisingly decent.

Sega Reissues - All Your Base Coming to the USA

SegaZero WingVia Retro-Bit: Retro-Bit PublishingÕs Toaplan Shooters CollectorÕs Edition means 4 games are getting reissued for Sega Genesis and Mega Drive. This is notable because despite its fame as a meme, Zero Wing and its "All Your Base Are Belong to Us" notoriety is from a game played mostly on emulators or mostly overseas. It will be joined by Hellfire, Fire Shark, and Truxton... and these are actually some pretty great shooters.

Pre-orders start September 15 and last through October 6. Games are a not-too-bad $44.99 each or all four for $159.99 - the fancy edition coming in a collector's slipcase (meh) with a thank you card (eh) and a Zero Wing All Your Base Are Belong to Us pixel art pin (sold.) Fans of games know bootleg cartridges are made quite cheaply without royalties or any safety considerations for $10 or so, depending on your sources, which is why they threw in things like reversible covers, boxes, slipcovers, puffy stickers, and other things. Sadly, not additional pins.

Retro-Bit's reputation for cartridge reissues tends to be good, with the exception of a Data East collection for NES that can't be pushed down into a front-loader NES due to its length. Size matters. It works fine in a top-loader, an NES, or a slightly-modified front loader that can play games from the "up" position, though. Presumably these will all work fine due to a lack of clearance issues.

Still no word on the Mega Man Wily Wars reissue.

GameBoy Color Shantae Pre-Orders Live

GameBoyShantaeVia Limited Run Games: Shantae for GameBoy Color (and also Switch) can be ordered now. Just the game is $45 for the GameBoy Color, and you can get a Switch port for $30. (I went for the GBC regular edition.)

Various limited edition configurations and soundtracks are also available, with one all-in package at a whopping $390 - which is still cheaper than the original game. For those unfamiliar with the legacy, Capcom published WayForward's genie platformer just after the GameBoy Advance came out - and nobody bought the 8-bit charmer, resulting in Etsy bootlegs and really high prices. The cartridge is clear purple, modeled after the clear "color-only" cartridges for Nintendo's color portable - like Super Mario Bros. DX.

NintendoFrom BelowVia Matt Hughson on Twitter: Coming soon....

Pylon Reissuing CD, LP of Chomp and Gyrate (and a boxed set)

MusicPylonVia New West Records: Pylon Box (and more) November 6, 2020. An exclusive vinyl color is sold out, but there's other merch too - coffee, shirts, and single albums.

If you've never heard these albums from the Athens scene before the likes of REM and the B-52s broke out, you should. "Italian Movie Theme" from Chomp would go on to be covered by Man or Astro-Man?, and there would be not a whole heck of a lot of other Pylon music after these. (Chain is, sadly, not included in the reissues.) They're pretty cheap given the secondary market prices of the originals, and $12ish for CDs and $22 for LPs ain't bad.

Transformers Takara Tomy Generations Selects TT-GS11 Volcanicus

TransformersVolcanicus IIVia Hasbro Pulse: Transformers Takara Tomy Generations Selects TT-GS11 Volcanicus (Hasbro Pulse Exclusive). It's $188.99 for repaints of about $100 of figures with some more paint and new parts.

They're in carton deco, so they're vibrant and bright - but if you're happy with the set you have, maybe you don't want these too. But you might - because new feet, really cool swords, better colors, and more blasters are a pretty good selling point, as is red-faced Slag. I'd love to see the set in G2 or Age of Extinction colors, but that's me.

Freezepop Album Update

MusicReally!Via Freezepop on Kickstarter: ACTUAL REAL UPDATE! The vinyl is delayed (of course), a new maxi-single "Anchor to the World Below" was distributed last night, the bonus albums aren't done yet, and the actual album is dropping digitally for backers Tuesday September 22. (I didn't even know it was done.) The vinyl is coming later... whenever that is.

This album was expected in January of 2017 - so there was a slight delay. The EP is pretty good, I'm spinning it right now. Sure it's basically 3 new songs with 6 extra remixes, but that's 40 minutes of ear candy.

Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance No-Go for Season 2

TVThra Thra for NowVia io9: After winning a Best Children's Program Emmy on Sunday, Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Has Been Canceled by Netflix. There have been a few comments made as to where and how the story will happen if this happened, and here we are.

I assume Kickstarter or crowdfunding wouldn't be unlikely, but I'd probably also roll the dice for print. Comics and novelizations are nice and cheap. If you haven't watched the show, it starts slow - and looks like a 1990s CD-ROM game in parts - but it's super charming and has lots of awesome creatures.

HasLab Does HeroQuest Game System via Avalon Hill

ToysDoodle WorldVia Kickstarter Hasbro Pulse: HeroQuest Game System. The old board game has been revived with some new/exclusive elements, expansions, and a two-tier system of support - making this a lot more like Kickstarter.

The vintage game is in a similar price range - this new one has a $100 and a $150 tier - but obviously, this has more stuff in a mint and sealed box. It's 85% (or more) supported as I write this, and you get charged November 6 for delivery in... as far as I can tell, there is absolutely no hint as to a release date. But Polygon makes reference to a mass retail release in 2021, so presumably it will be around that time.

Transformers Kingdom Previewed

TransformersCyclonusVia IGN: New Transformers Generations: War for Cybertron: Kingdom Figures Announced by Hasbro. Beast Wars Megatron, Cheetor, and Rattrap join a movie-inspired Cyclonus, and these are due in early 2021.

More of this line is expected to be revealed on Saturday as part of Hasbro's "PulseCon" event around 8:25 AM Pacific on Saturday, when I'll be sleeping. It's worth noting that the toys seem to keep the 3mm pegs on the engines or blasters, but the C.O.M.B.A.T. zits are largely removed.
