Classic Review: Hasbro Transformers Prime Beast Hunters Optimus Prime
|
A classic! I've written over 5,000 action figure reviews since 2006, so I'm going to toot my own horn with classic Figure of the Day.
Posted ten years ago today! The Hasbro Transformers Prime Beast Hunters Optimus Prime came out in 2014, and it was amazing at the time - and arguably easier to find at closeout stores. Even at full price, this was a giant Voyager-class toy that towered over the others that came before. The trade-off was that it was a bit simpler, but you got a shield, a sword, and a rocket launcher. It's good. Read on!
Come back tomorrow for an all-new review!

MOTU Nightstalker Coming June 18
|
Via Mattel Creations: Masters of the Universe Nightstalker Set for June 18. The price is unknown, but it's a redeco of Stridor - who may be at a Ross near you for $5.99, or a Walmart clearance aisle at or under $20.
Go run out and get a cheap Stridor if you don't have one - it's pretty neat.

Review: Mattel Masters of the Universe Turtles of Grayskull Krang Action Figure
|
Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
New! The Mattel Masters of the Universe Turtles of Grayskull Krang Action Figure is probably at some of the Walmarts in your town right now, but not all of them. At $25 it's big and weird, and worth the asking price. Go get one. Read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!

Star Trek Prodigy Season 2 Drops in July
|
Via Trek Core: STAR TREK: PRODIGY Season 2 Beams to Netflix on July 1. We don't know if it's one episode or the full dump of 20, but at least we'll only have a month without any Trek to watch.
The show was previously on Paramount+, and is actually pretty great. I'd recommend checking it out as long as you watch more than the first couple of episodes, as the pilot movie is a bit more of an action/adventure kid's show while the series itself evolves into something that's very much Star Trek.
Also of note, CNBC reports Paramount and Skydance agree to terms of a merger deal. This will no doubt impact new shows (or lack thereof) as new bean counters figure out what is necessary to retain subscribers going forward.

Star Wars Review: Jango Fett (Deluxe, The Vintage Collection)
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Jango Fett (Deluxe, The Vintage Collection). It may not be configured to match either of his specific looks in the movie, but all of the parts look good. The helmet is lacking his post-Kamino dent, but you do get the second jet pack - and a lot of nice articulation and painted detail. It is very nice, but given you likely have cheaper figures that are truer to the scene, you'll have to weigh "better proportions and slightly better articulation" against "already have something like it in your closet." Read the whole review.

Star Wars Review: Cad Bane (The Retro Collection)
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Cad Bane (The Retro Collection). Based on his appearance in The Book of Boba Fett, this Kenner-style figure isn't quite as Kenner-y as some others - he more or less fits in, but lacks the detail and distinctive body language of the old guys. But it's a $12 Cad Bane, and he can stand and sit, and has a swell hat. Also he's one of the few figures where a vinyl cape might have been good to serve as a coat - but in this case, the coat is molded to the figure so it doesn't get in the way of him sitting in your old vehicles. Classic Review: Four Horsemen Outer Space Men Infinity Edition Gamma X Action Figure
|
A classic! I've written over 5,000 action figure reviews since 2006, so I'm going to toot my own horn with classic Figure of the Day.
Posted ten years ago today! The Four Horsemen Outer Space Men Infinity Edition Gamma X Action Figure was one of the last of the original prototype figures from the 1960s to finally make it out to market, in a different scale, decades later. While cool, this painted version does glow - just not very well. But it looks totally cool, and is long out of production. I like it, and he's been in display since I got him. Read on!
Come back tomorrow for an all-new review!

GBA Kickstarter Goodboy Galaxy Still Not Ready, Lawyers Involved
|
Via Rik: An update. In short: if you're waiting for a cartridge, so is everybody else - First Press Games hasn't delivered the cartridges yet, and lawyers are now involved. The game itself is a lot of fun - I wanted to wait for the cartridge but instead I played the ROM - but I assume I'm not going to see the physical game any time soon. Something to consider if you are looking to do any retro crowdfunding, it certainly put cold water on my wanting to support something and wait a year (or more.)
The cartridges were due in December 2022, after the campaign kicked off in August 2021. If you were holding off for the cartridge, I might suggest just going for the download at this point. If you want the cartridge, I would recommend waiting for it to come in stock because at this point, it's not something I feel super optimistic about having in my hands this calendar year.

Welcome to Wheels Week! This Mattel Hot Wheels Brick Rides Brick and Motor might be in a grocery store bin near you, and newer recolors of it are in other stores right now. You can pop off the grille/mustache, or pop off the engine part in the back. Review: Hasbro Transformers Robots in Disguise Spy Changers R.E.V. (Clear) Action Figure
|
Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
Old! The Hasbro Transformers Robots in Disguise Spy Changers R.E.V. (Clear) Action Figure is a Hasbro toy from 20 years ago, that's a repaint of a toy from nearly 30 years ago, that rolls on Hot Wheels track if you're so inclined. It can change from car to robot, and in my findings tends to go farther when you used a launcher than Mattel's own cars. It's impressive. Read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!

Review: Mattel Hot Wheels Thrill Racers - Beach '12 Sharkruiser
|
Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
Old! The Mattel Hot Wheels Thrill Racers - Beach '12 Sharkruiser came out about a decade ago, but the mold has been in circulation in some form or another since the late 1980s. And you can still find it in multi-packs at a lot of stores literally today - it's a good one, it's weird, and it goes surprisingly far on a launcher. I like it. Read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!

Star Wars Review: Hot Wheels Princess Leia (RacerVerse Blockade Runner Tantive IV)
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Hot Wheels Princess Leia (RacerVerse Blockade Runner Tantive IV). It's Wheels Week, and this is the reason why - I saw her in a store and said "wait, what else have I missed?" It's basically a 1980s McDonald's Happy Meal toy, but with the quality of a Hot Wheels car, and also it's a ship you don't see as a toy very much. It's a winner. Read the whole review.

Old! The Maisto Tonka Die Cast Collection 2 Nuclear Energy Van came over 20 years ago and I saw them in bunches of stores - they're not the rugged Tonka trucks you remember, but are pretty good - not as good as Hot Wheels or Matchbox - toy truck. Read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!

Star Wars Review: Millennium Falcon (Hot Wheels Carships)
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Millennium Falcon (Hot Wheels Carships). I picked this one up at 99 Cents Only stores (RIP) a few years ago and opened it a couple of months ago. It's pretty nifty - basically they slapped a racing stripe on the Falcon and slapped a metal ship on a plastic sled with wheels. It's pretty good - if you have a launcher, it'll go pretty far with a slight nudge. It's also one of the faster cars I've got when I tried it in a downhill race, but wasn't fast enough to beat the Slave I Carships toy I got. Read the whole review.

Review: Playing Mantis Johnny Lightning The Challengers Nucleon (Yellow)
|
Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
Old! The Playing Mantis Johnny Lightning The Challengers Nucleon (Yellow) is a 1990s reissue of a 1970s toy, and it's pretty cheap if you can stumble on one at an antique mall. It's midcentury weirdness, with two round bits connected by a skinny plank - it looks really cool in person and for $4 I got my money's worth. Read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!

Star Wars Review: Luke Skywalker (RacerVerse)
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Luke Skywalker (RacerVerse). I really like this one too - I've been seeing him at Target if you want to go see one in person, and he's worth the six bucks. Sure, there isn't a full X worth of wings, but it's a charming little toy and the kind of thing that's fun to scoot around on your desk. It's more of an actual toy than a toy-shaped collectible, so if you have kids or tracks or race little cars, absolutely go get one of these. And if you're sick of car that's OK, we have one more Friday and that's it. Read the whole review.

Star Wars Review: Bespin (Silhouette II)
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Bespin (Silhouette II).This one is gorgeous - Mattel made a bunch of cars with little designs on them not unlike the old Burger King glasses, and this one comes from a set fo planet-themed cars. This one uses the Silhouette II car, which looks kind of like a single version of the Twin-Pod Cloud Car, and is based on one of the very first Hot Wheels cars. Also the design is beautiful. In stores now, maybe! The Hasbro Transformers Legacy United Deluxe Animated Universe Bumblebee Action Figure is packed in two waves, but because it's Bumblebee he's selling.
