Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: BB Droid (Advent Calendar 2022). It's an ornament! I think - for a robot in a Christmas/Holiday set, it certainly looks like something that could just be a run-of-the-mill droid. There's white paint and metallic blue, making this the kind of thing you could see serving on an X-wing and not, unlike many of the others in the set, particulrly pecific to any one time of the year. Read the whole review.

Classic Review: Four Horsemen Outer Space Men Cosmic Creators Mel Birnkrant Edition Fire and Ice Electron+ Action Figure
A classic! I've written over 5,000 action figure reviews since 2006, so I'm going to toot my own horn with classic Figure of the Day.
Posted ten years ago today! The Four Horsemen Outer Space Men Cosmic Creators Mel Birnkrant Edition Fire and Ice Electron+ Action Figure was a low-run revised version of the standard figure, with even more clear parts and metallic enhancements. It's probably as good as this mold will ever look, and of course it sold out a while ago. A few figures from this line are still available - and with all the glow and White Star guys, I still have some reviews to write! Read on!
Via the Glyos News Dump: Glyos Onell Design December 4 2023 Drop Menu . Lots of glow guys, some silver, some black, and some green - it's a really good batch of colors, with lots of revamps of familiar, long-sold-out figures. If you've never bought any of these before, now would be a good time with glow Gauss Armor, a new version of Hades, and two different glow Pheyaos figures up for grabs... provided they didn't sell out yet.
Analogue Pocket OS v1.2 is due this month, with a few new tweaks including, for some reason, a CRT Trinitron Display Mode.
Despite the basic black or white models being $219.99 I've found them to be great - I have a lot of old cartridges I still play a lot, and the whole side-loading homebrews thing has been great too. You can copy over those Kickstarter demo ROMs for NES, Genesis, and other consoles on this thing and give them a whirl. Sure, I wish it were cheaper and easier to get, but even if you build a new Game Boy in 2023 it's going to cost you $80 just for the buttons, screen, shell, and speaker and another $80 for the board. (But, it should be noted, I am lazy.)

Trashy! The Hasbro Transformers Legacy Evolution Voyager Trashmaster Action Figure is a fun figure, but isn't particularly big given his price point. He's comparable in size to an Energon-era deluxe, but has a higher parts count, more accessories, and can be taken apart and parts-swapped with your other Junkion figures. At regular price it's perfectly fine, but if you can get it on sale you absolutely should. Read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!
Via itch.io: NESDev Compo '23 Results. A bunch of programmers put up some great games and demos you can download and play for free, and the rankings for this year are in. Little Sisyphus won best overall, and a lot of other games did pretty well. You should check them out, because you're probably also old and don't like new games no way now how either. I still need to try the likes of Proximity Shift and Miroh Jr.
Star Wars Review: Artoo-Detoo (R2-D2, The Black Series)
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Artoo-Detoo (R2-D2, The Black Series). This is a new mold for 2023, larger than the 2013 version and weirder. He's got a telescoping neck with on-board storage for all his claws and arms, plus a retractable third leg with an articulated foot. That's an unusual feature in Hasbro R2-D2 figures. It's by no means perfect, but it's a pretty great replacement for the old one if you feel like dropping $25 on another R2-D2, which I of course did. Read the whole review.
Via BBC6: Iggy welcomes Tom Waits to the Confidential Show. I've started listening to this one, and it's pretty much 100% what you want to hear - two distinct musical voices shooting the breeze about a lot. Guests on this particular show are a rare thing, and it should be streaming for about a month.
After that you'll have to find an MP3 of it on some archive somewhere. It seems like peak "weird dad" energy, so if you are a weird dad or have a weird dad, be sure to give it a listen. It's fun.

Blind bag surprise! This Playmobil "Fi?ures" Figures Dutch Farm Girl has a nifty had and good deco, plus wooden shoes you can throw in machinery. Is it something I'd have picked out on purpose? Probably not - but it turned out well, so here's a review while I figure out where to put her in the greater context of things. Do read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!
Via Trek Core: Playmates Toys Ends STAR TREK Action Figure Development. A second wave of figures, including Pike and Spock, 7 of 9 and Worf, Q, and what may have been LaForge but the figure picture that got out was super blurry. None of these London Toy Fair 2023 reveals were shown to the public.
It's a pattern that emerges a lot with new reboots of collector lines - older fans look at it with skepticism as it's not what they have, and new fans don't see a big picture yet. (For example, The Black Series waves 1 and 2 pegwarmed and spent some time in the $10-$13 range on Amazon before prices started to go back to normal and collectors came on board.) With multiple Trek figure lines that stop after one or two waves, it's not a big surprise that some fans - heck, myself included - had a "wait and see" attitude. Will someone else try? Maybe if Trek gets in front of families on a bigger service again... but probably not. I was really hoping Playmobil would give us more figures and a Shuttle.
Playmates had a massive success with kids and adults with a 1990s Trek range that covered pretty much every series and movie in varying sizes, with a reboot line that was a little messy in 2009 and this other line that kicked off in 2022. As of this week, I've spotted some of the 2022 figures on sale at Target for a few bucks off - so if you want to collect the whole line, you can probably do so pretty easily.
Star Wars Review: Morgan Elsbeth (The Vintage Collection)
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Morgan Elsbeth (The Vintage Collection). This is a good figure, with nice deco and sculpting, plus an excellent likeness. But she has no accessories, and is $17. A variant head would have been nice - and was probably spoiler-locked from development - as would a nod to her spear in the previous series. Nothing in the packaging is bad, so as long as you weren't expecting accessories for your money, you'll be happy. Read the whole review.

Reviving the dead retail landmarks of old is nothing new. Toys R Us seems to be trying to find a new identity as a brand, Circuit City and Kay-Bee had dubious revival attempts, and there were others too. For all we know it's just a place to stick some extra inventory and keep trademarks alive but heck if I know.
For the younger readers out there, Sears was the king of retailers for much of the 20th century. Before Walmart (and later Amazon) had a foothold in every American city, Sears was able to not only service retail needs via their department stores, but had a massive mail-order division thanks to their massive catalog business. If they were a little quicker on the draw in the 1990s, they could probably still be king of the hill instead of being down to about a dozen physical American locations. I'd love to step in one again - it was always a fun place to look for clothes and, on a good day, toys and video games. Granted, the malls where I used to go to Sears are gone now, so this may not be relevant even for a best-case scenario here. But you go visit your Sears if you have one.

This went fast! The Hasbro Transformers Legacy Evolution Buzzworthy Bumblebee Troop Builder Multipack came and went so quickly - because it was so good - I assume one of two things happened. One, a few troop builder super fans cleared them out and are probably sitting on some extras that need to trickle down to eBay. Two, Hasbro and/or Target didn't distribute these fully to stores, so there may be unbought ones that need to get out somewhere - and we're seeing more Buzzworthy stuff showing up at clearance shops. Anyway, I like this set, buy it if you see it. (I'll buy another if I see it.) Read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!
Via Super7: Cobra Mothership crowdfunding ends tonight. As of about 8:00 AM Monday, it had about 1,500 backers and needed 4,000. It looks like a heck of a neat product but Joe fans ultimately did not show up for it. As I write this it's a bout 41% funded, so I can upload this file early and be fairly sure it did not hit the initial goal.
Via The Hollywood Reporter and elsewhere, from a Hasbro memo: Hasbro Plans to Cut 1,100 Additional Jobs. That's a lot - in addition to numerous freelancers, Hasbro employs about 5,000 people.
The Providence office building (near the convention center and mall, you can't miss it) will end its lease with Hasbro in January, 2025, and teams will move back to Pawtucket.
As to "why," there has been an industry-wide build-up of inventory at numerous manufacturers which has resulted in a lot of closeouts. All of the toys you've been seeing at Ollie's, but also TJ Maxx, Burlington Coat Factory, Ross, and other deep discounters represent money that their respective manufacturers did not make back in full.
While my parents were marketing catalogs of VHS tapes of old TV shows and CD reissues of classic and early rock, the elder Gen Xer and baby Millennial looks at video games and action figures. Mini-consoles have proven popular, but for the persnickety collector with boxes of old games Analogue's consoles have been the pricey way to relive a classic. Video games historian Jeremy Parish got his Analogue Duo, a fancy all-purpose replacement for TurboDuo, TurboGrafx-16, PC Engine, and all related consoles - and he has a video up.
It's worth the short watch, but two caveats: the card slot isn't very kind to Everdrives, and the controller port works with Duo controllers. That old TurboGrafx-16 controller you kept since 1989 won't fit in it. It also has an enhanced menu system inspired by that of the Analogue Pocket and a decent array of features that should delight people with massive CD and HuCard collections. (Since I only have a handful of HuCards, I won't be upgrading to one of these.)
Star Wars Review: Gamorrean Guard (The Retro Collection)
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Gamorrean Guard (The Retro Collection). This is a new mold for 2023, based on the 1983 figure. A vintage Kenner figure has better sculpting, with sharper detail and better paint - but if you only know that old figure from photos or fuzzy memories, this is a really good substitute. It feels sturdy and he can hold the ax with no problems, with botoxed detail on the face and armor. Is it a perfect replica? No, he's a little wider-eyed and shinier in the silver - but if you're looking to fill out a scene with retro Kenner Gamorreans, were it not in a 6-pack, this would be a great way to do it. Read the whole review.
I haven't seen these before this week, so naturally, it makes sense that I should write my opinions on these things like they matter at all, or that I have any expertise whatsoever. It's a fun place to be again - back in 1998, all us toy bloggers were obsessed with seeing (or buying) a peek at the future when the first fully-painted and packaged samples of these toys appeared roughly seven months early. It was a big deal - one I dare say will never be matched again, but I'm enjoying this look at an alternate history of the prequels. I hope they keep it going. They won't, but I hope that they will. Read on.
Review: Super7 Star Trek Live Long and Prosper Spock ReAction Figure
Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
An exclusive I never saw in stores! This Super7 Star Trek Live Long and Prosper Spock ReAction Figure is the only Super7-made (without Funko) original series Trek figure in this line, and it was exclusive to Target. It's pretty good, too, but it's unusual to see a figure without a larger line to go with it. Do read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!
But there's more! The 2023 Last Minute Gifts Sale is running with over 800 items up to 85% off. Some of them are already gone! Check out $2.89 Funko Soda figures, $1.39 Pop! Vinyl figures, Retro Kenner Star Wars for about three bucks, and more.
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: R5 Droid (Advent Calendar 2022). It's a nutcracker, I think! You can see the eyes in the neck, and the dome is a hat, and the beard is on the top of the body. I think. Maybe it's just a test of your human imagination to see patterns where only chaos exists... but I like to think the red, black, gold, and white droid is here to open snacks. Read the whole review.

Posted ten years ago today! The Playmates Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Classic Collection Bebop was a low-run (or at least hard to find) figure that just up and vanished, before getting reissues individually and I believe in a multipack. (I sold it when Ultimates! got announced.) But it's neat, and you might see it and his case mates at Burlington right now. Read on!

Via the The Outer Space Men News blog: New Figure: Zollmen x OSM Astro-Nautlius. It's expensive - and due in the springtime. At $100-$150 I'd be in, but $400 is a little out of my price range, although it does look super cool. If any are around when there's a big sale, I'd buy it, but I admit I don't like paying over $100 for anything unless it's super old.

Review: Hasbro Transformers Rise of the Beasts Beast Battle Masters Optimus Primal Figure
Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
Gorilla blaster! The Hasbro Transformers Rise of the Beasts Beast Battle Masters Optimus Primal Figure is probably at your local Target or Walmart right now. Despite not being cheap, it is a lot of fun and I keep bringing it back to my desk to play with after putting it away on a shelf. That's a good sign for any toy. Read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!
Via itch.io (previously Kickstarter): Goodboy Galaxy, the ROM, is now available for your Game Boy Advance emulators, FPGA devices, and similar enjoyment - the actual manufactured cartridges have yet to ship but are expected next year. (It's running about a year late, or "on time" for crowdfunded games - I paid for mine during the campaign back in 2021.) This isn't a review or a sponsored post, I've just been playing it and am rambling about it because I love old consoles getting new games.
I should note, it's also on the Evercade and Switch. I haven't had a crack at either yet.
I've been playing it in spurts and it's genuinely great. I mostly play older games, but find it incredibly engrossing. Were this released in the 2000s, it would be on the list of "best games" on fan sites and may even be whispered in the same breath as first-party titles. It's really good. The Metroid-esque gameplay reminded me of an old Nintendo Power "Muttoid" joke, and now you have a puppy named Maxwell in a space suit. You have a map of a galaxy that grows as you play, and each planet has puzzles, friends, and 3 gates - each of which takes away one of your powers. One takes away your shields, one takes away your jump pack, and the other takes away your blaster. This makes you have to be careful in navigating various routes doing fetch quests (because dog), boss fights, collecting, exploring, and generally doing what you would do in a platformer or a Zelda. The writing is charming, and in addition to English it plays in several other languages which might be just as inspired but as I do not speak them, I do not know.
Each planet is pretty distinctive with gorgeous graphics and a specific personality, and to top it off they're populated by characters that aid you with gear, advice, or other things that would constitute spoilers. The controls are pretty tight, with charming sound effects like a weak "squeak" when you jump without your jet pack. It's cute, with adorable walking animations and a goofy tongue sticking out as Maxwell explores alien worlds. It can be a little tricky to aim with the Analogue Pocket triggers, but hey, you've got your own systems to play on - so your mileage may vary. By and large it handles like a missing link between Metroid II and its later portable sequels.
There are also a ton of mini-games, like fishing or a Minesweeper clone. The music is excellent and the hand-drawn sprite work is as good as anything that you might see in a modern retro-style game for a modern PC or console, but it's playable on something that's 22 years old. I don't know how close I am to beating it, but after a couple of weeks I play it whenever I get a few minutes and would say it's worth the asking price so far. I recommend giving it a look if you're old enough to have owned a Game Boy Advance when it was new, and I hope the developers have more new games in the works. Try the demo.
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Pre Vizsla (The Black Series). You wanted him when the cartoon was still on, but hey, now you've got his revised armor with the fancy helmet and Darksaber. For a retool, it's pretty good! You might even see it in stores, so grab one if you see it and remember who he is. Read the whole review.
Review: Healey Made Raider (GID Blue) Action Figure
Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
Glows! This Healey Made Raider (GID Blue) Action Figure takes a Kenner-style sculpted figure with Glyos joints and, when charged by the Sun, stays glowing for several hours. Dimly glowing is still glowing - it's an impressive feature, but do the details of the figure itself survive the light-absorbing powers of the plastic? Do read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!
I doubt anyone is going to give you much more insight beyond "ugh, this again" but hopefully some other companies will grow while these new giant behemoths become too big to steer. But given what's been happening with some projects as of late, it certainly doesn't sound like it's going to result in tons of awesome new things for the world to enjoy.
Star Wars Review: Chewbcca (Life Day, The Vintage Collection)
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Chewbcca (Life Day, The Vintage Collection). Pondering his orb - this is a figure over 40 years in the making, taking a 2004 body and giving him an orb, a slanket, a new head, and a new hand. It's not quite a perfect match for what was on The Star Wars Holiday Special, but it's probably all we will get in the world of action figures. Is it good enough? Read the whole review.

Classic Review: Mattel Masters of the Universe Classics Castle Grayskull
A classic! I've written over 5,000 action figure reviews since 2006, so I'm going to toot my own horn with classic Figure of the Day.
Posted ten years ago today! The Mattel Masters of the Universe Classics Castle Grayskull was, at the time, an absurdly large toy that nobody ever thought would exist - and now, we get a big crowdfunded toy every year or two. This giant is still quite expensive. Read on!
Via Analogue: Support / Pocket / Firmware / 2.0. It's not a fast download, but it does provide some interesting updates. For those of you who side-loaded other cores, there's now a Sony Trinitron CRT filter and it looks pretty great - it doesn't run on everything but it looked decent. As far as I can tell, the Dock still won't support the DAC - so CRT users, I guess you get to keep waiting.
Updated Genesis/Mega Drive Symphony of the Night Port
Via Pigsy: Pigsy Castlevania Sotn Xmas 2023 Demo. It comes in a more and less stable version, which takes the Playstation Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and crunches it down to something that can run on a Sega Genesis or the aforementioned Analogue Pocket's sideloaded cores.
How far it will go, I have no idea, but it's an impressive feat. It even has voice samples. It's not a 1:1 translation of the 1997 Konami title, as it has a couple of new bosses and different layouts after the first few rooms - it's a castle of chaos, after all - and I need to try it a bit more after posting this update. Give it a whirl, it's a neat and impressive feat.

You might find this one this week! The Hasbro Transformers Rise of the Beasts Beast Battle Masters Airazor Figure is in an assortment that sells really well, and seems to be restocked every couple of days at a lot of my local Walmarts and Targets - and some grocery stores, where they're even cheaper. She's worth it for six bucks, and for less, even more worth it. Read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!
Star Wars Review: General Hera Syndulla (The Retro Collection)
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: General Hera Syndulla (The Retro Collection). If you can find one, it's a fun figure. This is a new mold that aims to make a figure close to something like they sold in the 1980s, but it has details like a little lip paint and patches on the jacket that we'd never have seen back then. It's not exactly like an old Kenner figure, but it comes close with the 5 joints, and the blaster loop holster, and the fact she can actually fit in your old vehicles. (And hopefully, the new one coming in the fall from HasLab.) Read the whole review.
Via TheRoboz: Mega R-Type DEMO. This fan-made unofficial demo/port has a soundtest, and it handles quite nicely even on a keyboard. The Mega Drive/Sega Genesis never had a real R-Type, so hearing this fan-made remix is quite impressive. It's a free download, so try it, or don't.
Via Frank Cifaldi from the Video Game History Foundation: Super Sushi Pinball. SonyÕs second ever game in the U.S. was lost, until now. It's a localization of a Japanese game that would've been put out after Super Dodge Ball, with added cut scenes and lessons on sushi and chopsticks. It looks pretty cool, and you can download it from Hidden Palace. But before you do, and you know I rarely recommend you sit through a video, sit through the video. It's interesting stuff.

Newish! This Mattel Jurassic World Epic Evolution Danger Pack Plesiosaurus Action Figure is starting to show up in stores now, and is around eight bucks. For action figure toys in 2023, that's about as cheap as this sort of thing gets, and it has distinctive (and weird) face paint. I wouldn't mind seeing something a little blander for a repaint. Do read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!
Via Homebrew Focus on Etsy: 2024 NES Homebrew Calendar. I've been buying these over the last few years and they're pretty great - each month features a preview of a new game, or of one that came out you might not have tried yet (or maybe you have.) It's about $20 shipped in the USA.
Star Wars Review: Power Droid (Advent Calendar 2022)
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Power Droid (Advent Calendar 2022). It's a present - and it looks pretty good, too. Sure it wasn't green in the movies, but it's not like you're sitting on a ton of this guy anyway. Read the whole review.
Via MetagameMike: Kero Kero Cowboy. You've probably played enough games, as there's a growing supply of homebrew for Analogue Pocket and Game Boy Color. Here's another one, I just played through it and it's charming.
You play a frog cowboy through four levels - five if you find the special coins - and a boss fight. The frog has a comically huge gun, the ability to stick out his tongue to eat things like Yoshi and the ability to spit them out like Kirby. He can also find a boot that controls a little bit like Kuribo's Shoe from Super Mario Bros. 3. If you're the kind of person who played demo kiosks at Target and Price Club back in the day, go get this, it'll keep you occupied while waiting for someone to finish the shopping.
