Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
Sold out! The Healey Made Raider (Revenge) Action Figure is based on the character's revised armor, which is nice, because Hasbro's won't be out for a little while longer. So read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!

Star Wars Review: Stormtrooper (Skywalker Saga, Gold)
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Stormtrooper (Skywalker Saga, Gold). It's a 2018 figure, minus an accessory, and painted gold for 2019. And in my case, the neck snapped right out of the box. Read the whole review.

This Week in Delays and Cancellations
|
We could present good news, but why? A lot of things are happening and it's important to share what weirdness is going on in case you missed some of the bigger stories of upcoming events and non-events.
'Star Trek: Picard' Production Paused After More Than 50 Test Positive for COVID-19 (Exclusive, THR) - this follows news of Whoopi Goldberg, who is returning as Guinan, coming down with the virus a few days ago. From the article: "Production on the series was immediately shut down Monday and has remained dark since. Sources say filming is expected to resume early next week, if not sooner, though details remain in limbo."
E3 2022 Cancels In-Person Event, While Digital Show Remains Uncertain (via IGN). The show is normally around June, so this may foretell a lot for the next six months.
Spider-Man Spinoff 'Morbius' Delays Release Date By Three Months (via Variety.) This may make it the most-delayed movie of the entire pandemic.
CES 2022 Is Smaller and Quieter This Year. What I Learned From the Show. (via Barron's) We are hearing that it's a ghost town, with lots of lightly- or unmanned booths including stories of big manufacturers loading up their spaces with QR codes for more information. This event is happening this week.
Toy Fair loses major retailers over Omicron fears - but still slated for Javits Center (via NY Post). The organization put out an optimistic press release this week, but Hasbro pulled out, as has Jazwares and MGA Entertainment, and others who have yet to make statements. Neither Galactic Hunter nor 16bit.com will not be covering the event in person if it takes place next month.
Grammy Awards Officially Postponed (via Variety), with no new date listed.
As far as I've heard, Star Wars Celebration, San Diego's Comic-Con International, C2E2, and all the other big shows are still planning to happen.
Also, Saturday Night Live returns January 15 for first, hopefully Omicron-free show of 2022 (AV Club) so that may be some good news.

Star Wars Review: Jyn Erso (The Black Series)
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Jyn Erso (The Black Series). The 2016 figure is new and improved with an impressive photoreal face, and this does indeed mean your old ones are old and inferior. This is probably one of the most dramatic improvements I've seen since Hasbro started repainting figures with the new printing, and in person it's stunning how much better she looks. New York Toy Fair 2022 - Canceled
|
Via the Toy Association: Toy Fair New York 2022 Cancelled. "No kidding," said the dozens of vendors who pulled out of the exhibitor list over the past 10 days.
Of note, the words "delayed," "pushed back," or "postponed" aren't mentioned in the release, nor was that some areas of the toy industry are doing phenomenally well right now despite any sort of central toy show. With Zoom and Teams and other teleconferencing, toys will still be made, presented, ordered, and delivered, but our sources have said that they don't expect a return to anything resembling normalcy regarding distribution and production until 2023. So keep ordering online, kids.
Other big events which haven't been canned yet for 2022 include Anaheim's Star Wars Celebration, The 56-Year Mission in Las Vegas, San Diego's Comic-Con International, New York Comic Con, C2E2, and Emerald City Comic Con. I feel I should set up some sort of cancellation bingo card.

Review: Onell Design Glyos Syclodoc Glyaxia Command Sentinel
|
Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
Chunky! The Onell Design Glyos Syclodoc Glyaxia Command Sentinel is a mold we don't see run anymore, in a format Onell Design doesn't do anymore either. The hollow soft vinyl figure is almost more impressive eight years on, because it's pretty big and has swappable heads. And great paint. Also it looks super cool. (They should make more like this.) So read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!

New Playmobil Exclusive in DE, Regular Stuff in Walgreens
|
Via Thüringen: Playmobilset - Oberhof (Playmobil 70643). This souvenir set is there to celebrate things like sports and World Cup 2023 action, and it's Û7.99. It does not seem they ship to the USA, so keep an eye elsewhere for the two winter sportspeople and a snowman... or just not get it, I guess.
Also interesting, the carry case sets are showing up at US Walgreens sets for around $10 alongside other stuff as part of their long-delayed toy aisle reset. Given most US big box stores don't carry Playmobil, it's nice to see.

Star Wars Review: Crosshair (Imperial, The Black Series)
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Crosshair (Imperial, The Black Series). It's a good figure but not an authentic figure - the colors and new helmet are great, but the armor is just a recolor of the Republic version. It's not really accurate to the show, so a version 2.0 is pretty much essential right out of the gate. Regardless, it does look cool in and of itself and is arguably worth a buy at regular price. RetroUSB AVS (NES FPGA Clone) Updates Firmware
|
Via RetroUSB: AVS Firmware v 1.50. Highlights of this new version include a Game Genie bug fix, plus the ability to load custom color palettes.
The console is very much like Analogue's Nt Mini, but cheaper. It used to be easily bought for under $200, but is now out of stock and sold out until 2023. It's a really good console if you like old Famicom and NES games, and it goes for quite a premium on eBay right now too, but it might be worth it if you have kept putting off getting a really good HDTV-compatible way to play old cartridges without modding.

Tim Mee's Star Attack Battle Station Reissued
|
Via Tim Mee Toys: TimMee Star Attack BATTLE STATION - Action Figure Size for Play & Display - USA. It's $125 delivered, and you can connect up to four of them to make a big circular playset. If the name is familiar, Tim Mee made a bunch of great army men, dinosaurs, the Galaxy Laser Team, and the Battle Mountain playset.
This 3 3/4-inch set was set to be reissued for a while, but they were out looking for the molds - and found them. It comes to you in a plain brown box with stickers and some weapons for your 3 3/4-inch figures - presumably this was meant to go with the popular G.I. Joe range. It's also huge - about 13-inches tall and 38-inches across.

Funko Leaves Everett for Buckeye Warehouse
|
Via HeraldNet an elsewhere: Funko to close Everett warehouses, shift work to Arizona. Funko signed a lease in Buckeye last year, which is very south and very very west of Phoenix. I've been to both Everett's Funko warehouse and to Buckeye, and I can tell you both have a lot of space.
This probably doesn't mean anything to anybody, but other than McFarlane Toys there isn't a heck of a lot of corporate toy industry presence here in Arizona. (Collectors yes, freelancers yes.) It is speculated that benefits may include more and cheaper land, potentially fewer regulations in light of another lockdown situation, and a handy location - it's much quicker (and cheaper) to get materials to California and other neighboring states than it is from the Pacific Northwest. But note, it's just a warehouse - and a big one, at that - so this isn't a place you can go to buy stuff or take a tour.

Confirmed: IDW Losing Transformers, G.I. Joe Comic Licenses
|
Via THR: IDW to Lose ÔG.I. Joe,Õ ÔTransformersÕ License at End of 2022 (Exclusive). Skybound (Robert "The Walking Dead" Kirkman) has been openly talking about his interest in the rights to the brands, and it's unknown if the stories will be picked up, or rebooted, or what. The current 2019 Transformers continuity is a reboot of the 2005 reboot, and the story has been, shall we say, methodical about getting to the core Autobots vs. Decepticons conflict.
Marvel ran a Transformers series from 1984-1991, with Dreamwave picking up the books from 2002-2004 (when the company folding.) IDW has run with the brand since 2005, with a whopping 17 continued years of one or more books per month including crossovers, reprints, and a preposterous amount of stories that did a great job creating demand for old toys (and toys that didn't yet exist.)
At least so far, Hasbro has avoided being gobbled up by Disney or another conglomerate to be absorbed into their content machines.

Review: Transformers Generations War for Cybertron Trilogy Sparkless Seeker with Caliburst and Singe Action Figures
|
Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
From last summer! The Transformers Generations War for Cybertron Trilogy Sparkless Seeker with Caliburst and Singe Action Figures is a weird set - the figure may not really be a Sparkless Zombie, and the gun buddies are kind of unnecessary, but everybody loves a seeker so he sold through anyway. So read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!

2022 Star Trek Toys from Playmates
|
Via StarTrek.com: Playmates Toys Unveils their Latest Star Trek Universe Collection. A new 5-inch line of figures looks a lot like the one that ran from 1992-1999. It kicks off with (roughly) Season 3 Picard, Data, and Riker, The Wrath of Khan Kirk, Spock, and Khan, plus Season One Saru and Burnham. And a phaser, and an Enterprise. Pre-orders soon!
While more waves are expected, we are not privy to what they are. It's heartening to see regular uniforms and no battle damage, and two new characters to the format. But we've got no idea if this is going to be a very small and incomplete collection, or if it will be built out with the Stamets, Tilly, Scotty, and Worf that we need.
For those of you who weren't around for the 1990s, Playmates' Star Trek line was a huge deal - some figures were made in quantities over 200,000 and sold all over the world. Each figure was $4.99 and included a stand and several accessories, a remarkable value because Kenner's figures had 1-2 accessories and were $5.99 most of the time. Playmates' line grew, but also got repetitive in year two with redux figures of almost the entire main cast alongside some really tip-top weird choices that would qualify as a deep cut today since we're all nearly 35 years out from the first episodes of Picard's adventures. The original figures are also surprisingly cheap - you can get many of them at collectible toy or comic shops for fairly reasonable prices, although some command a pretty penny.
The figures were famous for their decent articulation and mostly excellent likenesses. The sculptors did amazing work, and the new likenesses are even better. (The heads and hands are not slightly enlarged for the 2022 line, another improvement.) We've got no idea how robust this one might be, and there are so many great figures Playmates never did like Martok, a non-accessory Nog, and Iggy Pop's Vorta Yelgrun. (Just to name a few.) We're also hoping for our friend Captain DeSoto.

Star Wars Review: Bo-Katan Kryze (The Vintage Collection)
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Bo-Katan Kryze (The Vintage Collection). The 2021 release has one of the very best human heads I've ever seen in this size - and the armor ain't bad either. (The shoulder tampos could be better.) What'll really knock your socks off are the hip joints, which have a range of motion that's on par with the O-Ring G.I. Joe figures. Read the whole review.

Hasbro Renews Marvel, Star Wars - Mattel Retakes Disney Princess
|
Via CNBC and others: Mattel recoups the Disney princess toy license, while Hasbro hangs on to Star Wars. Indiana Jones also goes to Hasbro again, so hey, you know what to think there. New movie, new toys are likely.
Hasbro has been making Disney Princess stuff since shortly after the tidal wave following the unexpected success of the original Frozen movie - back when we had Toys R Us and Kmart to shop at. Slices of Disney dolls have also gone to other companies like Jakks Pacific for some movies Hasbro didn't necessarily want to support - and Mattel tended to take them all back when they had it. So, let's see how this goes.

Star Wars Review: Lobot (The Vintage Collection)
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Lobot (The Vintage Collection) . His sudden appearance as an action figure for the first time since 2004 makes me wonder if he's showing up on a TV show sooner than later - as of now, he's just a classic figure with a Disney-era Stormtrooper rifle for some reason. But he's a great figure. Read the whole review.

Affinity Sorrow - New Sega Genesis RPG
|
Via Kickstarter: Affinity Sorrow - A true 16-bit turn based RPG adventure.. It's due around the end of 2024, with a complete-in-box game being around $68. For those of you who remember the original Sega Genesis game prices, that's pretty much a decent deal on an RPG for the console.
A demo is available. It seems to bug out when you leave the screen, but what does work looks decent.
It looks sort of like standard 16-bit-era RPG fare, which could be really good. These guys made Eyra: The Crow Maiden the The Curse of Illmoore Bay, which is a pretty great track record.
