Classic Review: Toy Biz Video Game Super Stars Mario Kart 64 Mario Action Figure
|
A classic! I've written over 5,000 action figure reviews since 2006, so I'm going to toot my own horn with classic Figure of the Day.
Posted eight years ago today! The Toy Biz Video Game Super Stars Mario Kart 64 Mario Action Figure was released around 1999 by Toy Biz and came and went in a flash. It's a pretty robust toy for the price, particularly at the time. It has a figure, a kart, and a launching green shell - and you probably never saw it. There are dozens of Mario Kart toys today, but this was the first one I got. Read on!
Come back tomorrow for an all-new review!

Review: Mattel He-Man and the Masters of the Universe Cartoon Collection Skeletor Action Figure
|
Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
New! The Mattel He-Man and the Masters of the Universe Cartoon Collection Skeletor Action Figure is seemingly not in any major US chain stores yet, I got mine online - and he's pretty good. Not perfect, the colors are quite bright and he's light on paint, but he's charming enough and has some really good accessories. Also, March is going to be all Masters of the Universe here, so buckle up for more Grayskull action. Also note that this one not only as a swell comic with sewn pages, but two alternate heads in the form of masks. They have the neck hole and everything. Read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!

NES (and Switch/Xbox/PS) Rugrats Preorder Coming
|
Via Limited Run Games: Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland. There are a whopping 14 variants, with versions for PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, Switch, and most delightfully, NES. These go up for sale March 8 and you can order one until April 21.
The idea that there's a market for a licensed NES cartridge in 2024 is still one that amazes me, but it also shows that IP holders are eager to squeeze returns out of their catalogs. Mostly. There are some really weird people who don't want to do much with their stuff, but I'm mostly interested in those that do and Super7 will be making a vinyl Reptar figure to go along with the limited edition flavors.
There may not be a huge market for this sort of thing, especially given that games like the very entertaining Jay & Silent Bob Mall Brawl can be had on eBay for pretty close to its issue price. $60 sounds like a lot for an NES game, but adjusted for inflation, you'd have probably paid more for it back in the 1990s (were it a thing that existed.)

Star Wars Review: Yak Face (The Retro Collection)
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Yak Face (The Retro Collection). Depending on your age and when you got into these toys, this might be considered to be an unattainable grail - and Hasbro reissued it last year, making it available to most Americans for the first time at regular retail prices. He's a well-made replica that looks and plays great - the colors are a little tweaked, but considering buying a 6-pack of figures is probably cheaper than an unpackaged Yak Face has been for most collectors' careers, that's probably a worthwhile purchase. Or it would be, had it not already sold out. Read the whole review.
Also, Walmart.com Lists Imaginext Darth Vader. That's a big dang deal, see it here.

Bookoff and Geo Rolling Console Clones
|
Via Time Extension: Japanese Second-Hand Stores Are Making Their Own Famiclones To Cope With Retro Demand. There are a whopping 14 variants, with versions for PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, Switch, and most delightfully, NES. These go up for sale March 8 and you can order one until April 21.
Coincidentally, I stumbled on the 8bit Compact V2 at a new Mesa, AZ Bookoff on Sunday night. It's pretty garish - I can dig it.
The aforementioned article says "The store reports that sales of retro games... increased by nearly 60% in 2023." Here in the USA we saw a lot of prices shoot up when Analgoue put out its consoles. Just a few years ago I was able to pick up Game Boy Camera peripherals for $6-$8 and a lot of games were under $10. The Analogue Pocket ushered in higher prices as soon as people had those consoles in-hand, and we saw similar rises with their other consoles. Nobody in the USA has been particularly successful low-cost mass-market clone console as of yet, so I wonder if we might see something hit in a big way that results in non-limited edition reissues and even more new software for old consoles. My guess is no, not until you get something with an HDMI cable and a cartridge port into Target.

Clearance of Grayskull
March 13, 2024 |
Star Wars Review: Paige (Resistance Gunner, The Last Jedi Line Look)
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Paige (Resistance Gunner, The Last Jedi Line Look). In my never-ending quest to alienate the remaining readers of this site, I went to my pile of unopened figures and pulled out this gem from 2017. She's good - you skipped her and when you see her at a shop, she's not worth anything, but this is a good figure. Take a look at the removable helmet, the perfectly painted eyes, the removable oxygen mask, and the fine sculpting. The limbs all swing nicely and she stands with no problems. All parties involved did an amazing job having this figure ready for Force Friday The Last Jedi edition, before anybody knew she had no liMOTU in the movie and the vehicle she was in wouldn't get a toy. Odds are you won't track her down if you haven't already done so, but if you stumble on her? This is a well-made figure. Read the whole review.

MOTU Turtles of Grayskull Mouse-Jaw On Sale Already
|
Via Target: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles of Grayskull Mouse-Jaw Action Figure is on sale for $14.99 down from $24.99 for this relatively recent release.
For the asking price, you get a Metal-Boto build-a-figure arm (with tools), a M.O.U.S.E.R., and of course Trap Jaw in his revised gear. Presumably the figure is more valuable split up as someone will want the mouser buddy, some will want the figure, and at some point someone is going to need an arm - but mostly, I'd just say "dude it's worth the $15 and fun enough to pick up." I don't know if it's specially priced online only or in stores, as Target is currently closed as I write this, but if you see one today? Scan it, get it for $15 and enjoy.

Dollar Tree Closing 1,000 Stores
|
Via NPR: Dollar Tree to close nearly 1,000 stores as it posts a fourth quarter loss. This is notable: "Dollar Tree plans to close about 600 Family Dollar stores in the first half of this year and 370 Family Dollar and 30 Dollar Tree stores over the next several years."
The chain had a well-publicized airing of dirty laundry late last year on Last Week Tonight that shed light on a litany of problems, all seemingly accurate from my visits.
The chain has been interesting for toys over the years - Family Dollar used to get a lot of cheap Hasbro closeout items (Dark of the Moon-era Transformers and 25th anniversary G.I. Joe comes to mind) while Dollar Tree started to carve out a niche for its own house-brand toys as well as closeouts from Playmobil and others. This also likely signals a need for a new retailer to focus on cheap goods, as there's a lot on the extreme low-end while seemingly everybody else is racing toward "premium."

|
Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
Newish! The Mattel Masters of the Universe Origins x Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Turtles of Grayskull He-Man Action Figure and his cohorts are strangely hard to find at American big box stores - but you can get one online. We don't get a lot of figures that are evil versions of your franchise's hero that aren't a clone or an alternate universe version - this is one who got altered by mutagen! The clear-ish blue plastic skin really pops and the green hair is incredibly unusual. This is worth a look. Read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!

Spaceballs: The Action Figure: The Prop
March 20, 2024 |
Star Wars Review: Ahsoka Tano (Epic Hero Series)
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Ahsoka Tano (Epic Hero Series). This is a new mold, and I've seen her online and in the cardboard Easter dumps at Walmart - and this is a great figure. Other than the lack of a waist joint, she feels like a sturdy 1990s figure with nice clear lightsabers, the ability to stand easily, and freely moving joints. In short, this one is a toy first and is all the better for it. I'd recommend picking her up - the face sculpt is really excellent. Read the whole review.
Also, Spaceballs: The Action Figure Auction. These are the props from the movie, as nobody has made actual toy figures and likely never will.

A Comic: Myth Wars: Vol. 1: Zeus - The Teenage Years
|
Hey, I know that guy! Scott Neitlich - most famously formerly of Masters of the Universe and DC Comics toys at Mattel, Bif Bang Pow!/Entertainment Earth, and some of your mini-comics, wrote a graphic novel called Myth Wars: Vol. 1: Zeus - The Teenage Years and it's on Amazon. (And of course, that's an affiliate link, with the caveats of "if you buy a copy or anything through that link I may get a small percentage of the sale from Amazon.")
The press release says "Myth Wars marks a significant milestone as the first full-length, 227-page all-age graphic novel created using Artificial Intelligence. Rendered panel-by-panel, this publication pioneers the fusion of human creativity and AI-assisted illustration, offering a unique platform for storytellers without traditional artistic skills." I gotta admit I'm curious to read this one.

Star Wars Review: The Mandalorian (Epic Hero Series)
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: The Mandalorian (Epic Hero Series). This is a very nice figure - it doesn't have all of the deco as other similarly sized figures, but it's a better figure. The exaggerated bright silver Beskar armor is gorgeous, the Darksaber is fantastic, the pistol ain't bad, and the cape is a clip-on around the neck. He can fit in your The Vintage Collection vehicles, too. He's also really easy to find at Walmart as they seem to be getting solid cases of just Mando, and also Darth Vader, but Mando is the better figure. Read the whole review.

So It's Come to This: A Simpsons Action Figure Reboot
|
Via Toy News International: Jakks Pacific The Simpsons Figure Images. Supposedly there's a toy phone and two scales of figures - we don't know much yet, but it looks like a pretty robust line compared to what we've seen from other manufacturers in recent years. And, I assume, cheaper.
It's been a long time since anyone has done a mass-market, all-ages line based on this century's Dennis the Menace, which may mean this is going to be more of a nostalgia push - which is fine, the show turns 35 this year.

Classic Review: LEGO Minifigures Series 5 Fitness Instructor
|
A classic! I've written over 5,000 action figure reviews since 2006, so I'm going to toot my own horn with classic Figure of the Day.
Posted ten years ago today! The LEGO Minifigures Series 5 Fitness Instructor was released in 2011, and I think we all had points in our lives where we said "some day, I'm going to build a LEGO town at home." I know a couple of people who did - but since action figures didn't die out around 2010 like I was expecting, I wound up with a lot of sets and figures that just never made it into a big planned community. But it's still a nice figure. Read on!

Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: R5-D4 (The Mandalorian, The Black Series). There was a new R2-D2 mold last year, and this R5-D4 figure uses it - with a bad motivator, and a new dome. It's clean, and lacks the Mando-specific dirt patterns.
