HasLab Updates on Unicron, Cookie Monster
|
Via HasLab: Cookie Monster's about 13% funded and Unicron is at 26%. Overseas outlets are also selling Unicron which we're told will contribute to the total, so there's still a bit of time for people to go for these. I saw both at Comic-Con and they were incredibly impressive - and huge. Very huge.
Neither have moved much in the last week, but the Sail Barge had some lulls too. Crowdfunding is a weird thing for a big company to do, but it's fun to watch.

Street Sharks M.U.S.C.L.E. Exists
|
Via eBay and Instagram comments: Street Sharks M.U.S.C.L.E. figures are out in the wild! I see no Super7 branding - just Mattel - and it looks like they may be showing up at Ollie's and/or 5 Below.
None of the Keshi forums have a lot to say that I could find, and eBay samples lack price tags. Let me know if you've found any!

Hasbro Pulse Adds Seacons
|
Via Hasbro Pulse: Takara Tomy Transformers Generations Selects Seacons. It's good news that you can get these for the Japanese prices, more or less, with US shipping rates. Unfortunately, those prices are double the going rate of typical Voyagers and Deluxes.
Six Decepticons are expected, and as the final combiner team for US fans to grab in a "Combiner Wars"-style update these are potentially more exciting than Unicron - and potentially about half that price.

SD Adapter for Analogue's HD Super NES, Sega Genesis Clones
|
Via many and RetroRGB: Analogue DAC Prototypes Unveiled Ð Super Nt/Mega Sg on CRT TVs! Analogue spilled the beans on the Digital Analog Converter recently, and these are new gizmos that allow you to hook up your Super NT and Mega Sg consoles to CRT monitors via RCA, RGB, S-Video, and other kinds of connections. This is particularly exciting because this may mean those of you with light gun games can actually use those, since HDTV light gun compatibility has proven to be problematic so far.
In short, your fancy perfect HDMI-compatible 16-bit consoles tailor-made for HDMI inputs on HD and 4K and maybe 8K displays now have an adapter to use on the big, heavy TVs that until recently, Goodwill wouldn't accept for free. I still keep a couple of them around, myself.
What's more, Trademarks Hint At A Game Boy Clone From The Aces At Analogue (NintendoLife and others.) "Analogue 8" would probably be a new NES clone, as the Analogue NT models are long gone, and Analogue Pocket would sensibly be a GameBoy clone of some sort. But nothing has been announced as of yet, so don't get your hopes up.
No pricing or release date is given - and depending on your hardware needs, it might not be worth your while to get these if you have vintage hardware. As my Sega stuff stops at RCA, this might be worth my while.

Reminder: Cookie Monster Crowdfunding Ends Sunday (Monday) at Midnight
|
Via HasLab: Cookie Monster. Unicron's time is almost up, but Cookie Monster ends a bit sooner - when the clock ticks Monday, the funding period ends. It's a nice piece at a nice price, but has about 84% more to go. It's not impossible, as the Sail Barge didn't get funded (along with a bonus 3,000 units sold) until its final few days.
Unicron has about 11 days to go, and another 64% of its listed minimum order quantity.

Hasbro to Phase Out Plastic in Packaging
|
Via Hasbro's PR portal:
Hasbro to Phase Out Plastic from New Toy and Game Packaging. The wording takes care not to say "everything," so for those worried about things like small accessories making it out without bags, or seeing portraits of your action figures before purchase, don't panic yet. Here are two pretty good quotes:
"Beginning in 2020, Hasbro will begin phasing out plastic from new toy and game packaging across its portfolio of iconic brands like NERF, MY LITTLE PONY, MONOPOLY, MAGIC: THE GATHERING and POWER RANGERS"
Also, "beginning in 2020, it plans to begin phasing out plastic from new product packaging, including plastic elements like polybags, elastic bands, shrink wrap, window sheets and blister packs. The companyÕs ambition is to eliminate virtually all plastic in packaging for new products by the end of 2022."
This is ultimately good for your (yes, your) bottom line. Packaging materials cost money - when you buy a toy, you're paying not just for the toy, but also the packaging, freight from China/a distribution center/a store/etc. to you, and possibly any IP licensing incurred. The extra plastic or cardboard adds to the cost of raw materials and manufacturing, plus makes the item heavier for transportation to you and its many stops along the way. For some lines, this is probably good - Hasbro's closed-box Transformers get gorgeous artwork, and The Vintage Collection Star Wars vehicles sport awesome photos.
With online business, the future of packaging is probably a lot browner and blanker.

Hasbro Announces Ghostbusters Master Toy License
|
Via Hasbro PR: SONY PICTURES CONSUMER PRODUCTS TAPS HASBRO AS GLOBAL MASTER TOY LICENSEE FOR GHOSTBUSTERSTM and unlike the plastic one, it's not linked on their PR web site. We got an email - but you probably have already seen the Optimus Prime Masterpiece Ecto-35 and Ectotron toys. There will be more.
They write: "The upcoming product line marks a return to the Ghostbusters franchise by Hasbro. From 1986 to 1991, Kenner, which is now part of Hasbro, created and marketed The Real Ghostbusters toy line, with many of the original developers from Kenner still working with Hasbro. More recently, Hasbro collaborated with Sony Pictures to create the Transformers Generations Collaborative: Ghostbusters Mash-Up Ecto-1 Ectotron which is currently available for pre-order exclusively at GameStop and HasbroPulse.com. Additionally, a Transformers / Ghostbusters crossover comic series is now available from IDW. These collaborations honor both brandsÕ 35th anniversaries this year."
But will kids buy it? Will there be "Legends" or "Black Series" style props? Have we already asked them these questions? Stay tuned!

8- and 16-Bit Reissues Galore Announced at Gamescom
|
Via Instagram Retro-Bit/Gamescom/etc.: New Super NES, Sega Genesis, and NES reissues! There were a lot of surprisingly exciting offerings with no specific release dates.
For Sega Genesis and/or Mega Drive: Mega Man: The Wily Wars, Zero Wing, Truxton, Hellfire, and Fire Shark. These are particularly exciting given that Zero "All Your Base" Wing was never sold in the USA, nor was a cartridge for this Mega Man compilation - which is effectively "Mega Man All-Stars" for the first three games.
For Super NES/Super Famicom: Undercover Cops.
For NES: Hammerin' Harry and the oft-delayed Metal Storm.

Via Hasbro Pulse: Sesame Street Cookie Monster did not get funded. C was not good enough for him.
Hasbro set its goal at 3,000 units to make this worth their while to produce, and the final number of support is a bit of a mystery. At press time it shows 63 backers, but the number sold was over 600 prior to the funding period ending at midnight overnight. Next up: Unicron with a week to go.
