And even more exciting - a German press release extolling their new licenses Scooby Doo, Heidi, and Back to the Future. And here it is in English. I can't believe it, either. I heard absolutely nothing about the latter two at Toy Fair, and so far haven't seen anything. Here's hoping we see it soon!

ICYMI: GameBoy Color First Person Shooter "Tyrannosaurus Tex" Got Released
|
Via Piko Interactive: Tyrannosaurus Tex (GBC). Originally set for release by Eidos around the year 2000, Tyrannosaurus Tex is a surprisingly smooth, almost-complete first-person shooter. It looks a lot like Doom and their ilk, but it's on vastly inferior hardware - and apparently, it got licensed and released a bit over a year ago.

ICYMI: Sega-Compatible Mega SG Includes Unreleased Genesis Game
|
Via Analogue: Mega Sg now includes Ultracore game. Previously known as Hardcore, this unreleased run-and-gun game is built in to Analogue's new 16bit-compatible consoles. It includes the means to use Master System and Genesis/Mega Drive games in the box, and supposedly can connect to your Sega CD too. A Game Gear adapter is slated for future release. Also note - no controller is included, so if you didn't buy one at Toys R Us in 1991 you may need to get a new wireless model or hit some garage sales.
DICE's long-lost Ultracore seems similar to the Super NT pack-in Turrican, and it sounds like the kind of chiptune thing you've probably heard the kids making these days. It sounds very 16-bit and looks pretty nice! Interestingly, the game also announced it would be on PS4 and PS Vita in 2019 - complete with a physical media release.
I ordered and finally received the Analogue Super NT last week and was impressed. I ran out to buy a few more used Super NES and GameBoy games to play on it, and then ordered a Mega SG. Their reputation is stellar, so I hope Sega gets just as good as Nintendo. (And now I wonder if we'll complete the trifecta with a PC Engine or TurboGrafx-16. Probably not.) I'm slowly plodding my way through Super Star Wars again right now, and it is exactly as good as I remember! But I digress. Something something Sega.

Axiom Verge Disc Still Coming to Wii U

The Messenger Switch, PS4 Physical Pre-Order for $34.99 Today
|
Via Special Reserve Games: The Messenger for PS4 and Switch. The Metroid-ish Ninja game is supposedly fantastic, so I ordered it as I am not crazy about downloads.
In addition tot he disc/cartridge, you get stickers, a box, and a hardcover instruction book.
I also should mention Google Stadia was announced. It's a new streaming platform for Chromecast or your PC, so it's all digital and there's really no mention of what games are coming other than a Doom sequel. It's not cartridges and weird boxes with ungainly controllers - which is kind of what I go for, so I doubt it's going to be for me. If it's a success it could be future-proof, but I don't feel digital is good for keeping your games around forever (unless you're ripping them.) If you can't sell a game when you're done with it, what's the point of buying it?

New Atari VCS News - Console Changing, Delayed
|
Via GamesIndustry.Biz: Atari VCS console delayed following spec boost, which is probably a nice way of saying it's delayed because it wasn't close to being ready. Will it make it this year? They say yes.

Mega SG Reviews Today, Polymega Restarts Console Cold War
|
Best summed up by RetroRGB: Polymega ÔTweetstormÕ Announces Product Delays and/or this round-up of Polymega's tweets from GameTyrant. The short version: a company making a console called the Polymega was trying to make a universal retro console that works with Sega CD, Sega Saturn, PlayStation, TurboGrafx CD, and Neo Geo CD - plus paid add-ons for cartridge games from other consoles. In short, Retron 5 but with CDs. It's an emulation box, which is a change from its previous claims of hybrid emulation or FPGA. This may not mean much, but the trend in high-end retro consoles now is "hardware simulation" rather than "software emulation." Consoles like the Analogue family of Super NT, Mega SG, NT Mini and RetroUSB's AVS attempt to clone the original game console hardware, warts and all, to give you a nearly-identical (with HDMI and some filters) experience of the original console. You'll get slowdown, flickering, and everything you remember along with alleged 100% compatibility with your old cartridges.
Emulation is where it gets touchy. Sometimes you'll get a box that runs its own proprietary emulation software, and some boxes license, borrow, or otherwise use existing emulators - each is different, and it's not something I want to get in to here. The very short version is some companies use crazed engineer geniuses to reproduce old hardware, while others use their (or someone else's) software.
Here's where it gets kind of interesting. In short, we're seeing the old "mine is better" console argument return with audiophile-ish-grade equipment for aging video gamers. The tweens and teens of the 1990s have the option of measuring their bits and pieces in a whole new generation of hardware.
If you're a Gamer of a Certain Age, you no doubt remember the "Console Wars" of the 1990s. With shots fired off by Sega's marketing department, we saw the Genesis, NES, NEC TurboGrafx-16, and Super NES engaged in various contests to dunk on their competitors, with slogans like Sega's "Genesis Does what Nintendon't." It was crude, but remarkably effective - you heard kids invoking marketing buzzwords for development and power on the playgrounds and school buses, and it carried over onto Usenet and other online forums. If you couldn't afford all of the consoles (and what kid could?) you were probably in one of these silly discussions, many of which surrounded vaporware or unreleased hardware.
I've avoided most online game discussion because really all I want to know is what's coming out and fun to play. It was brought to my attention that Polymega and Analogue are engaged in 1990s-style game marketing now, which is particularly funny given that the Analogue Mega SG's marketing tagline was a tongue-in-cheek reference to the above nonsense - Console Wars Are Back. Gamers and streamers are posting "hot take" videos on this very topic that, save for the subject material, sound like sports or political radio. If this is intentional, it's rather brilliant.
Some journalists got hands-on with Polymega's box over the weekend, as the device has no known release date and the manufacturer has yet to release any products - but it sure sounds interesting. (Gamers not interested in the CDs may be interested in Hyperkin's RetroN 5 multi-console emulator.) Analogue's Mega SG shipped last week and the Sega clone's review embargo is up today, so reviews should start showing up around the time you have breakfast. The company previously shipped three Nintendo clones with ghastly-expensive Analogue NT and NT Mini, as well as the cheaper-but-not-cheap Super NT. (I have a Super NT on my desk and it's remarkably useful and I've gone out to buy more old Super Nintendo and Genesis games as a result.)
If you missed the era of your fellow game fans making a big fuss over who has the best stats or gear, apparently the skirmish begins anew. Hopefully it will distract people long enough so the price on authentic Zero Wing cartridges dips a bit. I find the whole thing rather fascinating, but as you may have guessed I'm a creature of that era of video gaming. My big takeaway at the time was that I just wanted to play everything. Well, up until that whole Johnny Turbo vs. Feka campaign.

ICYMI: New NES Game "Candelabra: Estoscerro" on Kickstarter
|
Via Kickstarter: Candelabra: Estoscerro - A new game for the NES. This is a new first-person dungeon crawler for the Nintendo Entertainment System (and presumably compatible boxes like Retrons and Analogue NTs).
A digital ROM is $10, and cartridges start at $35. You can also get sold-out games like Mad Wizard (I admit to being tempted) in black-box-style packaging. With an increase of clone hardware making the rounds from Hyperkin, Analogue, RetroUSB, Retro-Bit, and others in game shops around the world it makes sense. It's like the only company not interested in this space is Nintendo.
It's already fully funded, so go ahead and pledge. Sly Dog Studios has ROMs up here for your enjoyment of their previous releases.
