In-Person E3 Off for 2021
|
Via various news outlets and surprisingly also Wikipedia: in-person E3 2021 is not happening. The Los Angeles trade show was set for June 2021 and is not reorganizing as a virtual event.
Much like last year, this is one of many events just not happening - like New York Toy Fair 2021, Katsucon, most of the Wizard Worlds, and a few others.
Numerous shows are still on the books for this year, but it's worth noting that it took until mid-April 2020 for SDCC 2020 to be officially cancelled.
It's worth checking out.

NES Witch N' Wiz Alpha, Trials of the Wolf Clan ROM Out Now
|
Via Matt "From Below" Hughson: Witch n' Wiz - NESDEV 2020/21 Competition ROM Out Now!. He says:
" This is an early, Alpha version version of Witch n' Wiz for the annual 2020/21 NESDev competition, and will give you a sense of what the game is about. However, please remember that it is much more limited in scope than what you can expect in the final version of the game! The final game will include far more puzzles, gameplay mechanics, characters, locations, music and story!"
It's a puzzle game that works on emulators and ROM cartridges. No cartridge is for sale at this time, but hey ran some for From Below last year and we'll be talking more about that if/when something comes up for this one.
Also pointed out on Twitter was Trials of the Wolf Clan, a demo from another developer. I really need to get an EverDrive for these things.

Uniqlo Shirts with Jurassic World art by Hajime "Sexy Robot Ladies" Sorayama
|
Via Uniqlo: Jurassic World x HAJIME SORAYAMA is the crossover you've never expected. Mr. Sorayama is famous for his pin-up robot girls - and he's applying the style to dinosaurs. If the name sounds familiar, he was parodied on The Venture Bros. with the Lesliebots, and some aamazing statues were made of his work over the years.
At press time there are three unique styles, and while we don't normally cover shirts here, this artist doing dinosaurs was too weird to pass up.

July SDCC Cancelled, Fake November SDCC Possible
|
Via Comic-Con.org: STATEMENT REGARDING COMIC-CON 2021. In short: WonderCon in March and San Diego's Comic-Con International in July are now both at-home events for 2021.
However, this nugget was in the news release: "...we are happy to announce that San Diego Comic Convention is planning to present a three-day in-person convention in San Diego in November. At this time, we are still working on specific details as to attendance capacity, badge cost, and related information, and those details will be forthcoming."
Based on projections from CNN on Monday after Moderna, Pfizer, and Johnson & Johnson announced their roll-out strategy, a November convention doesn't seem logistically impossible. However after being off of school and family gatherings for a year, I would doubt the industry - and possibly fans - would want to go to a limited, off-season convention during a busy Q4. C2E2 rescheduled for December 10-12 and Emerald City Comic Con is now set for December 2-5, which doesn't seem terribly outlandish as a possibility if CNN's projections hold true. Now if people are going to want to go, that remains to be seen.

Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Ahsoka Tano (The Black Series 6-Inch). She's a Walmart exclusive that I never actually saw in a store - presumably some made it to stores, but I got mine online. Maybe there's more to be had - it's tough to tell. Read the whole review.

Sega Genesis Gets Erya the Crow Maiden Demo
|
Via Second Dimension on Twitter: We are happy to give you a taste of what Eyra the Crow Maiden will be like on the #16bit consoles with this #segagenesis #megadrive demo. Enjoy! You can play this on an emulator, a Mega Sg which has been hacked, a ROM cart, or whatever. It's also coming to the NES and the demo plays very much like its 8-bit counterpart with the requisite visual and auditory upgrades.
It's also a new 16-bit game in the year 2021, which is generally a good cause for celebration.

Kickstarter - Stone Protectors DVD (and other stuff)
|
Via Kickstarter: Stone Protectors - Special Edition Series Box Set. If Comix.tv hits $30,000, a DVD boxed set with unreleased episodes could be made. If you don't remember Stone Protectors, there was a huge trend on Trolls knock-offs and inspired action toy lines in the 1990s. In addition to this line, you could see things like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Trolls from Playmates and Battle Trolls from Hasbro. And others, probably, but I don't remember their TV spots and don't have my old issues of Tomart's Action Figure Digest handy to go verify.
Action figures, video games, and Blu-Ray releases are among the stretch goals.

|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: See-Threepio (C-3PO 2020 Redux, The Vintage Collection). It has less paint, but looks better than the 2010 release. He also has removable panels and a removable leg, which I admit I missed the first time this mold got put out back in 2010. I assume and hope you got this by now. Read the whole review.

Replacement Crystal Clear Super NES Case

Via Retro Game Restore: Retro Game Restore - SNES Transparent Case $97.49 (Super Early Bird price, Postage not included). This has been making the rounds on the socially distant medias and it looks sharp - but it's expensive, and it won't fit all Super NES revisions.

New NES (and Famicom) Games: Banana Bash, Slow Mole
|
Via Work3 Studio on Twitter: We'd thought it's time to announce that Saru Kani Panic will be called BANANA BASH! for the western NES version. The in-progress game is set fro Famicom and NES releases, and there's already a packaging mock-up.
You will want to see this video on Twitter which shows a game that looks surprisingly detailed, with colors similar to Kirby's Adventure.
Meanwhile, Erik Rosenlund as a shockingly good promotional video for Slow Mole on the free tiers of his Patreon, plus a playable beta. It looks great - and it's hard!
It's worth checking out.

Kickstarter: IndestructoTank! Game Boy Cartridge
|
Via Matt "From Below" Hughson: IndestructoTank! - Physical Game Boy cartridge game in 2021!. He says:
"In 2007 I released a simple Flash game series that went on to have well over 50 million downloads and destroyed productivity in countless school classrooms.
"Now that Adobe have decided to pull the plug on Flash, I discovered after much market research that the kids of today are more interested in mobile gaming... So I decided to port the game to a more viable platform - the original Game Boy!"
It looks like fun. It's about US $35 for a physical cartridge plus shipping from the UK. That's not terrible - a first-party game was $19.99 in 1989, which is $42.17 in today's dollars.

Star Wars Review: Captain Cardinal (The Black Series 6-Inch)
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Captain Cardinal (The Black Series 6-Inch). It's a First Order Stormtrooper, but red, and with a cape - and you got charged $5 more for it. It's a book character that I don't believe is a costumed character at Galaxy's Edge, but I may be wrong about that. It was part of Target's exclusive program and that's 100% appropriate. When do I get my Target exclusive Red Bumblebee? Is that happening? And if not why not? Anyway. Read the whole review.

Bowser's Airship Toy Coming from Jakks Pacific
|
Via Jakks Pacific on Twitter: Super Mario Bowser's Airship Playset. Joining the #JAKKSToys and figures world this Fall! Apparently they were too excited to wait for March 10 - you know, Mar10, because the only stupid holiday pun couldn't be "May the Fourth" which never stopped being any less funny than it was the first time I heard it. Which is to say, not at all funny.
"Fall" is usually code for "August big box toy aisle reset dates," so stay tuned for more on that.

Beetlejuice, Lydia, Buffy, TMNT join BST AXN
|
Via ToyArk: The Loyal Subjects - BST AXN TMNT, Gremlins, Beetlejuice Cartoon, Ozzy Osbourne, Buffy, and More. In short: if you are me or married to me this is probably an exciting link.
Cartoon Beetlejuice has been an underserved market as Kenner's old toy line (and NECA's) were largely original designs or based on the movies - these are clearly from the Nelvana cartoon. TMNT looks animated - and far cheaper than Super7's figures at 5-inches tall and $14.99. It's quite a line-up.
I'm told Gandalf and others are in circulation now but I've yet to see any of these in the wild - but the pictures on Twitter look nice.

Star Wars Review: Bo-Katan Kryze (The Black Series 6-Inch)
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Bo-Katan Kryze (The Black Series 6-Inch). She's a new figure you'll probably never see on shelves because everybody else wants her, so ordering online might be a good move. The sculpting is great, but you'll notice a lot of sculpted scrapes and scuffs that lack any sort of decoration - which is a shame, it's a great sculpt with a good helmet and an excellent head under said helmet. Atari VCS Gets New Cartridges from Ex-Activision Developers
|
Via Audacity Games: Circus Convoy! This is a new $60 game from David Crane (yes Pitfall David Crane) and Garry Kitchen. It goes on sale shortly and ships the week of March 22.
This article delves a bit into Audacity Games for those of you who may need to know a bit about Activision. "Every release comes with a download of a digital version (with the same serial number) which is Stella emulator compatible," it says. At sixty bones it's pretty pricey, but for a limited edition boutique product from OG-developers it might be a bargain. Also it's a pretty decent price when adjusted for inflation, but as to the quality of the games? That remains to be seen.

Transformers Kingdom Rodimus Prime Revealed (in Japan)
|
Via Takara-Tomy but translated at TFormers: Transformers Kingdom Rodimus Prime with Trailer Official Images & Details Revealed! This is expected to be a US Commander-Class toy, which means it's $80, which means it's rather pricey - but Rodimus' trailer is significantly more robust than that of the $50 Leader-class Optimus Prime. It also has lots of extra weapons, like a blaster, and 10 effect parts which are as of yet unrevealed.
The figure seems to share a bit of design thought with Studio Series Hot Rod, but the spoiler appears to be painted sadly. There's also a fair amount of paint, and more details will presumably follow when the US pre-order pops up eventually.

New 16-bit-style TMNT Game
|
Via Tribute Games: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: ShredderÕs Revenge - Reveal trailer. From the Canadian developers that gave you Scott Pilgrim, this love-letter to Konami's 1990s side-scrolling beat-'em-ups has a gorgeously animated introduction with appropriately retro sprite work that looks a bit fancier than the genuine article.
Presumably it will be on consoles, and it is listed for Steam - but will it be on Switch? Can I play it online? This is all I care about right now.

Healey Made Raider Mutations - TMNT-Flavor
|
Via the Glyos News Dump: Pre-Orders: Healey Made Raider Mutations Set. Four figures at $100 isn't cheap, but this is a pretty good figure mold. Old-school figure fans will probably love these more than Glyos fanatics.
As you can see, the colors borrow heavily from Playmates' first four versions of the green teens.

Game Boy Color Infinity - RPG Coming
|
Via Retro Modding's Incube8 Games arm:
20 years later, one of the most anticipated Game Boy Color RPGs is back from the dead! I didn't keep very good track of Game Boy Color developments during the original one despite going to Best Buy on launch day due to the many NES ports, shovelware games, and Pokemons - so this is new to me. It's coming to Kickstarted from Retro Modding, a company that's been making inroads as one of the go-to businesses for Game Boy modding over the last few years. They're hiring some of the original game developers - and some new people - to finish this game that looks like it smells a bit like Secret of Mana, so I'm potentially very interested.

Beast Wars Reissues Coming to Walmart (with New Deco)
|
Via IGN: New Transformers: Vintage Beast Wars Coming to Walmart Collector Con. The prices are strange - Leader-class Optimus Primal and Megatron are each $40, while Cheetor is $20 and, for some reason, so is the basic Rattrap - which sold for half of Cheetor's price in 1996.
Both Optimus and Megatron have significant color changes to their helmets, but seem to retain all of the gimmicks from 1996 for a price that, given inflation, isn't bad - these are big toys. Cheetor has red robot eyes and green cheetah eyes, a mix of two of the previous releases, and Rattrap's rat mode has black eyes. They're all a little bit different from previous editions.

Walmart Getting Ecto-1, Fearsome Flush, Bug-Eye Reissues
|
Via GameSpot: Ghostbusters Kenner Classics Line Adds ECTO-1, Toilet Ghost, And One More Eye-Popping Toy. These go up for pre-order today and will be in stores later this year.
The car is $50 - not bad, I've still got my original one and it's a nice toy - and the ghosts are $15 each. I remember seeing a lot of Fearsome Flush and the non-cartoon ghost and monster toys on Red Tag Special at Lionel PlayWorld as a kid, and while I've always wanted the ghost toilet.

New Transformers - Sparkless Seeker and Optimus Primal join 4 Deluxes
|
Via TFW2005: First look at Netflix WFC wave 3 voyagers, Sparkless Seeker and Optimus Primal with Rattrap. These are most likely Walmart exclusives for around $40 that will most likely be on-shelf in a few months. (I haven't seen wave 2 in the wild yet!)
The green and rusty Sparkless Seeker comes with Sparkless Caliburst and Sparkless Singe - it's a gorgeous set. I really dig it.
Optimus Primal with Rattrap doesn't seem to be terrible different than the standard release. The colors on the Primal chest are swapped up a bit - some grey spots are blue, some blue spots are grey. Also the robot feet are now grey instead of blue. Other than that, it seems to be identical and I needed someone to point the changes out to me when I was holding up the Kingdom Primal on my desk next to this new one. It's not different enough for me - but if you missed the regular release, this is a can't-miss substitute.
Also, the third wave of deluxes are already being found. Nothing quite as crazy as new molds - but there's a blue Deep Cover, a rusty Sparkless Bot, a metallic Cheetor with green eyes, and the Deeseus Army Drone from Ironhide. Presumably there are repacks in the case.

Toys R Us: Don't Call It a Comeback
|
Via CNBC: Toys R Us has a new owner that's planning to open stores again in the U.S.. Two locations and some "experience" places closed after the 2018 folding of the entire chain. The long and short of it is WHP plans to reopen for the holiday season. However, if they didn't start working on this last year, getting supply of toys in time may prove impossible (even though it's only March.)
There has been no heir apparent for the toy industry's crown retailer since 2018. As of right now there's basically nothing left of the old Toys R Us but a tiny bit of nostalgia and some graphic design, and this article makes it sound like there may just be people looking to license out the name again. I wouldn't be surprised if we did some day see a revival of the chain, but other dead retailers like Tower Records, Circuit City, and KB Toys' revivals fell through completely. I can't name a single successful retailer comeback in any of the spaces I follow - I'd love to see an exception because the buying power of the old Toys R Us allowed for the proliferation of hundreds of thousands of toys that had nowhere else to go. I just don't think that anyone can go from 0 to National Chain in a year, so unless the plan was to open a couple dozen stores and scale up over a few years, I don't think this is gong to be something you even need to worry about.

Walmart Exclusives Are Up
|
Via Walmart: Calling All Collectors - Preorder new Ghostbusters, Transformers, Beast Wars, and Star Wars exclusives. This is not a paid post, but Walmart put up a bunch of new stuff you may want. Conspicuously absent are the Netflix War for Cybertron Wave 3 deluxe toys which started appearing in stores over the weekend - but have yet to be officially announced anywhere.
A mysterious ammo box has been rumored for a while, with no contents listed. The 17-step toy inside has a Fossilizer, and if you've been following the rumors you may have a good guess as to which leaked Fossilizer this may be and may have read the matching other character could be coming as well. But, of course, nothing's final and they want your $60 up front. Is it as cool as Nemesis Prime? Maybe. Probably not.

Star Wars Review: Boba Fett (The Vintage Collection)
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Boba Fett (The Vintage Collection). What you'll hear about in fan circles are two missing lines on the chest - a slight blemish on what would be Hasbro's very bet Boba Fett sculpt in this size to date. There is no known running change in the works, but at least what you get looks really good - the articulation is great. The sculpting is fantastic. The colors are excellent. If you can find it, you're going to buy it anyway - it's just that good. Read the whole review.

The Marvel/Pixar/Disney Movie Shuffle
|
Via everywhere but I'll link Variety because why not: 'Black Widow,' 'Cruella' to Debut on Disney Plus and in Theaters as Disney Shifts Dates for Seven Films . There are a lot of other movie changes too - here's a list of franchisey toy-related things.
May 28: Cruella, a live-action Disney movie, debuts in theaters and Disney+ ($29.99 "Premier Access" upcharge.)
June 18: Luca, a new Pixar movie about Italian sea monsters, will be part of Disney+ regular lineup and bypass theaters. I am unaware of any toy offerings, but that doesn't mean there are none.
July 9: Black Widow debuts in theaters and Disney+ ($29.99 "Premier Access" upcharge.) The movie was originally slated to be in theaters last year, and the bulk of the toys have already been made, shipped out, and no replenishment on the sold-out items are expected at this time.
September 3: Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings debuts - slightly delayed, but no specific information was given as to how/where it will be released. No toys have been announced to the public yet and as such, no announcements were made.
For those keeping track at home, Avatar 2 is still slated for December 16, 2022 (13 years after the original, notable because Star Wars took 16 years between Return of the Jedi and The Phantom Menace) and the next Star Wars movie is on deck for 2023.

Star Wars Review: The Child (The Vintage Collection)
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: The Child (The Vintage Collection). He's tiny. He has a the hovering pram and a frog. He also costs more than the 6-inch scale one - but you will probably want this one anyway. Read the whole review.

Demo/Beta: Alwa's Awakening for NES
|
Via Elden Pixels: Download the Beta demo now! (Don't mind if I do!) It's free and plays like a mix of The Legend of Zelda with one-screen-at-a-time action and Metroid with exploring the map requiring certain items or skills. I need to play more of it - it was previously sold on other consoles as a retro-style game. An NES port just makes good sense.
No word yet when the final cartridge will be sold, but for now you can load this up on your Everdrives, hacked Analogue consoles, or emulators.

SDCC Gets Dated for November
|
Via Comic-Con.org: Comic-Con Announces Dates for November Convention. These dates are November 26, 27, and 28 - Black Friday and Thanksgiving weekend, or one of the busiest weekends of the year for travel in the USA.
For those keeping track, D-Con is the weekend of November 13, SDCC is November 26-28, ECCC is December 2-5, C2E2 is December 10-12. Given the stress of holiday timing just on regular sales, I assume not every vendor or studio is likely to attend - especially given the many big question marks we're all still dealing with regarding variants. (Not the kind of variants we like.)

Star Wars Review: R0-Series Astromech Droid Black with Orange
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: R0-Series Astromech Droid Black with Orange. This might be at a theme park still - I haven't been by in a few years so I can't say. This was one of the most recent part drops at Disney, which was five years ago. Do you need it? No - but it's really cool and one of only two R0 droid domes to be made so far, making it essential for me at the very least. Read the whole review.
