Toy Fair 2023: Just Wait for NYCC?
The show itself didn't have much for figure fans that you may not have seen in online events or previous conventions, and arguable the most interesting tidbit came via The Toy Book: Toy Association Reveals Upcoming Toy Fair Dates, Locations [Through 2028]. Despite being in New York City for over a century, it'll skip 2024, be in New York in 2025, and then move to New Orleans. In January. Who was asking for this, I'll never know.
I did miss Saturday due to what was most likely really nasty food poisoning, but it didn't seem a lot of big news dropped - Playmobil revealed some pretty nice Miraculous toys, Super7 had Monster Vomit Keshi figures in slime, but there wasn't any one particular announcement that seemed like it would tear the roof off this sucker. Maybe they're saving those.

I'll have more coverage tomorrow, but let's look at The Legend of Zelda puzzles from Hanayama Games, because that's what got finished before it was time for me to say "oh, I need to pack. They looked really cool, and now you can see them!

Toys R Us Hype Train Continues
Via CNBC: Toys R Us is planning a brick-and-mortar comeback in the U.S., with up to 24 new flagship stores. Airport shops, stores-within-stores, cruise ships, and the like probably sound impressive to investors who don't know the business, but the low-margin, on-trend business can be hard to navigate. If you've been to some of the Macy's Toys R Us stores, a lot of old, state stuff can linger for a very long time.
Could it be like the old days again? Probably not for years - they don't have a big enough footprint to warrant big exclusives yet, and without things like baby stuff, bikes, video games, and other related items there's probably not a ton of business growth to be had on the quick in its current state.

Classic Review: Playmates Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Quark Action Figure
A classic! I've written over 5,000 action figure reviews since 2006, so I'm going to toot my own horn with classic Figure of the Day.
Posted ten years ago today! The Playmates Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Quark Action Figure came out nearly 39 years ago, and was a good deal at the time. Five or six bucks was the norm for a Kenner figure, so to get something with bending knees and elbow splus a whole suite of accessories and a display base was an incredible deal. He's still pretty cheap on eBay or at comic shops too. Read on, it's a good one - and come back tomorrow for an all-new review!

Review: Hasbro Transformers Legacy Evolution Deluxe G2 Universe Autobot Mirage Figure
Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
At Amazon now - did your Hasbro Pulse order get canceled? The Hasbro Transformers Legacy Evolution Deluxe G2 Universe Autobot Mirage Figure is a redeco of a pretty great mold from a few years ago... but without the distinctive design of his previous toy. (Specifically, Thrust's wings on a toy that's more or less Thundercracker with a blue face.) Read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!

Toy Fair 2023: The Rest of the Coverage
Nothing at New York Toy Fair could compete with the news of the upcoming show schedules. If you're on the action toy beat, those seem to have their own tidal forces so Toy Fair being a somewhat nebulous presence for business to business (and especially for fan press), we got to see some good stuff. But nothing that would probably warrant, were this the 1990s, a magazine cover.
Numskull Coverage and Pictures Below |
One surprise was Numskull, mostly because they combined the statue business with Kotobukiya-style prepainted model kits with advent calendars with Countdown Characters. Shrek, Stormtroopers, Miles Prower, and other characters are sliced up in drawers to unbox and assemble a surprisingly robust display piece as you count down to Christmas or whatever holiday is celebrated in a specific global region. Finding new ways to sell existing properties and products is tough, so I tip my hat to these guys.
Super7 G.I. Joe Coverage and Pictures Below |
The biggest things for action toy collectors that I saw came from Super7 G.I. Joe, thanks to that Cobra Mothership crowdfunding opportunity. It's the biggest 3 3/4-inch vehicle for those figures in years, and it should easily accommodate your older figures too.
Super7 ReAction Figures Coverage and Pictures Below |
The stalwart Super7 ReAction Figures continue and continue to surprise - the Halloween Kids sub-line has figures in cheap 1970s-style costumes, like you may have had from Ben Cooper. Most of them don't seem to be based on any specific license, and that's OK - they did a great job coming up with new flavors of classic and familiar monsters like their own mascot Mummy Boy. I need to get one of those.
Super7 The Rest Coverage and Pictures Below |
Super7 The Rest of the coverage is pretty great with slime-filled keshi buckets called Monster Vomit joining their excellent Super Cyborg and Ultimates figures.
Super Impulse Coverage and Pictures Below |
Super Impulse makes a lot of licensed goodies and may be most famous for its micro, teeny-tiny collectible figures. Check them out!
The Rest of the Coverage and Pictures Below |
The Rest of our coverage is, admittedly, thin. But you can see some of the random snaps I got to remind myself of things like a Curb Your Enthusiasm mug, a nice ThreeZero Spike Spiegel from Cowboy Bebop, and some other goodies.

Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Tusken Raider Warrior (Single Card Edition, The Vintage Collection) . This is the single-carded one, which I opened right as I forgot for a split-second I meant to open the Target version with the Massiff first. Whoops. Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Garindan (Custom). This is another fan-made, mass-produced figure but this time you can tell from where the parts originated - there are pieces of the 1997 Kenner The Power of the Force Garindan mixed in with a vinyl cape, a black Cloud Car Pilot comm, and other new and old elements. A New Old Atari Game
Via Atari: Save Mary - Limited Edition. It's an old game that never saw release, and now it is! Well, 500 copies are being made, so there's that.
"Another victim of the 1983 game crash, Save Mary never got an official Atari cartridge release until now! This fantastic work from Tod Frye will keep you on your toes as you build a platform that Mary can use to escape the flooding canyon.Use the crane to carefully lower the different blocks and piece together a platform that Mary can safely stand on Ñ but be careful! If you swing or drop a block carelessly, you may end up crushing poor Mary."
It's $59.99.

Posted ten years ago today! The Onell Design Glyos Lost Sincroid Army Genesis Corps Action Figure has lots of extra sculpted details, and a belt, plus a tiny scarf, and a nice alternate head, and a removable dome. Review: Hasbro Transformers Studio Series 86 Ironhide
Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
At a store near you! Maybe! The Hasbro Transformers Studio Series 86 Ironhide is still at one of my local stores, and it's not bad - or great. It's roughly the same size as the Deluxe figure, but if you missed the Earth Kingdom toy you'll probably want this one. It's not as robust - no riot shield - but at least it looks pretty good. Having fewer accessories resulted in more plastic being put on the main robot, and I'm torn on if this an improvement or not - I would wager people with the old one may be happy with him. Read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!

Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
Whip it good. This Super7 Devo Whip It Mark Mothersbaugh ReAction Figure somehow looks like it belongs with 1980s action figures - you could put it with space or sci-fi toys, and it doesn't seem entirely out of place. Also it's awesome. Do read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!

Netflix Gets Star Trek: Prodigy
Via THR: 'Star Trek: Prodigy' Moves to Netflix After Paramount+ Cancellation. Presumably Netflix went through the sofa cushions and found enough money to rent the show for seasons 1 and 2, the latter of which hasn't aired anywhere yet.
The show starts off like most kid shows you've undoubtedly watched if you read sites like this one, but it does gradually turn into Star Trek as you more or less want it with great guest voices and familiar cameos. And Barniss Frex.

G.I. Joe Cobra Mothership and O-Ring Guys
Via Super7: G.I. Joe ReAction Vehicle Cobra Mothership. It's $495.00, which seems pretty decent for something massive with a big detailed interior. Early funding includes parachutes! Higher tiers include stickers and turrets. It seems a little slow to back early, but it's a very nice vehicle and having seen it in person? It's impressive, and the biggest new G.I. Joe vehicle or playset in quite some time. Will fans have room for them next to the Terrordromes and FLAGGs? That I don't know. But I do know this is probably a lot more inexpensive than tracking those down.
There are also add-on packs of O-Ring and ReAction figures for Viper army builders. Each is a surprisingly cheap $75 for 5 figures.

Toy Fair: Forget New Orleans
From the birdsite via The Toy Book: BREAKING NEWS: Toy Fair New Orleans will not happen. Plans have been scrapped and the event will stay in New York (with eyes on L.A.) for the time being. The initial reaction from the industry seemed to be a shrug and people saying "maybe we don't need this event anymore," and the plans are still to keep the event in New York in March 2025. Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
At Walmart, maybe, but probably not? Analogue 3D Does N64
Via Analogue: Analogue 3D
The future is here.
64 bits of pleasure. While thin on pictures or specifics, one can assume it's a Nintendo 64 - after all, a MiSTer FPGA core is in development, and this would probably be one of the more advanced systems you can probably expect to get out of the current chips. A new controller is teased, too.
If you have any games you were waiting to buy, go get them - Game Boy cartridges were real cheap right until Analogue Pocket systems started to ship, and it's not like N64 is cheap as it was. More gaming gentrification is coming as the Millennial Yuppies move in, so be sure to get what you want early.

Star Wars Review: Boba Fett (Comic Art Edition, The Vintage Collection)
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Boba Fett (Comic Art Edition, The Vintage Collection). This is gorgeous figure at a hideous price - the mark-up on a $12.99 figure from a few years ago makes little sense, but from a technical perspective it's a nice product with great paint on a lovely cardback. We also got a Marvel Boba Fett about 15 years ago packed with a droid and a full-size comic for about $12 - so this definitely got slapped with some premium pricing. At least it's gorgeous. Star Wars Review: Oola (Custom)
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Oola (Custom). This is a figure Jabba wanted but Kenner was unwilling to make. A fan made one last year, and then a few more, and it's pretty close to what you might expect out of Kenner from 1983. The color is a little wrong, the headdress is a tiny bit off, and the sandals may not quite match - but the same was true of a few figures back then. She fits in perfectly with your older Return of the Jedi figures, and sadly is priced more or less accordingly. I like it - I wouldn't buy it if Hasbro charged $40. But Hasbro won't make one, so it's this or nothing. Is it worth it? Read the whole review.

Classic Review: October Toys Outlandish Mini Figure Guys (OMFG) Series 3 Minifigures
A classic! I've written over 5,000 action figure reviews since 2006, so I'm going to toot my own horn with classic Figure of the Day.
Posted ten years ago today! The October Toys Outlandish Mini Figure Guys (OMFG) Series 3 Minifigures is one of the few toy things I could say is for almost anybody who might want a toy. For hardcore keshi collectors, 80s toy fans, or indie art toy figures? It's good. For people who don't like toys but want a weird whimsical decoration for their desk? It's good. Dr. Decay, Barbarianaut, Fruit Punch, Pugnacious, and TenCan cost ten bucks back in the day, and prices on eBay are starting to go up. I'd suggest buying some if you can find them. Read on, it's a good one - and come back tomorrow for an all-new review!

Marvel Legends HasLab Giant-Man Ends Shortly
Via Hasbro Pulse: The Marvel Legends HasLab Giant-Man ends tonight. It's close, but not close close at over 7,200 of 10,000 backers. Without bonus smaller figures for flippers to carve out and sell, it has proven to not be particularly enticing despite being a pretty big figure for the price and on par with other very large Hasbro toys at $200... but, given the trove of wonders that is Ollie's or Ross, the collector dollar can go a lot further these days. Will it succeed? My guess is "no" or "barely," but you've still got some time to give it a shot.

Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
Bring a friend! The Hasbro Transformers Legacy Evolution Deluxe Pointblank and Peacemaker Action Figure is one I don't think I've seen in stores. Congrats Marvel Legends HasLab Giant-Man
Via Hasbro Pulse: The Marvel Legends HasLab Giant-Man ends tonight. It's close, but not close made it, passing 10,000 backers with over 3 hours to spare. (It needed 10,000 pieces sold to fund.) As of last night I was anticipating a Rancor-esque situation where it creeps up to the goal and maybe, just maybe, made it - but the fans showed up at the last minute, which is great! It sold 13,889 backers - almost 50% of which was on Monday, and 111 units shy of making the final stretch goal. I wonder if Hasbro will just say "good enough, here you go."
Presumably fans can look forward to more Ghostbusters next, with Transformers probably getting teased just after Deathsaurus starts to ship. The market for this kind of thing may not be getting a lot bigger, so we'll probably see more than a few of these higher-end crowdfunded items appear soon since it is unlikely to continue when we start to retire.

Star Wars Review: Krrsantan (The Black Series)
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Krrsantan (The Black Series). This is a perfectly nice basic figure, but it's priced as a deluxe - he's shorter than Chewbacca and has a similar accessory count, but it would seem the most popular characters are getting pulled aside for a wider box with more empty space in it with a higher price. But the sculpt is good, the articulation is well-engineered, and he has the minimum amount of accessories that you need to say "OK, he looks cool on my desk" while the smaller one has six hands and way too much gear for almost the same price. It's an increasingly bizarre line, ad a basic Kenner-style one is due soon. Read the whole review.

HasLab: Ghostbusters PKE Meter and Ghost Trap
From HasLab: Ghostbusters Plasma Series HasLab Two in the Box! Ghost Trap and P.K.E. Meter is a good item for a good price. I don't get to say that much - I joked with a friend that this should be funded within 24 hours, and it hit 40% in the first afternoon. You get a couple of props plus stretch goals for things like holsters and patches. Given what you pay for an action figure these days, these items seem like a relative bargain in 2023 dollars. They'd probably also seem like a good deal in late 1990s dollars. Go get yours!
At press time, it's 96% pledged.
