Star Wars Review: Dengar (and IG-88, The Retro Collection)
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Dengar (and IG-88, The Retro Collection). His details are not as sharp as the original at all, but he can hold his blaster straight this time. That's arguably a big improvement in this Amazon exclusive figure set. The skin tone is somewhere in between the peachy and yellowy old faces you may have seen, with what feels like rock-solid construction and freely moving joints. Other than the fuzzy sculpted detail, Hasbro did a real good job here and the Kenner-style paint job turned out really well. And yes we have comparison photos with the originals. Read the whole review.

Review: Hasbro Marvel Legends 375 Thor Action Figure
|
Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
He's tall! This Hasbro Marvel Legends 375 Thor Action Figure is one of few figures in this line to have not one, but two accessories! There's a hammer and a cape - and that's a lot more than the usual "nothing" you get. Read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!

Playmobil Got Disney
|
Via aNb Media: PLAYMOBIL & Disney Form New partnership & First License for the PLAYMOBIL Toddler Portfolio. The key sentence: "Six playsets inspired by Disney's Mickey and Minnie Mouse as well as Winnie the Pooh, Tigger and Piglet will be launched summer 2023 for fans of all ages."
I assume Marvel and Star Wars are unlikely as these are technically 3-inch scale action figures, but I can dream. And I will be insufferable if they ever do a Playmobil X-Wing which, I can only believe, could be the greatest toy of all time.

Emmet Otter Finally Gets Action Figure Pre-orders
|
Via Plastic Meatball: Emmet Otter's Jug Band Christmas 45th Anniversary Figure Set. The set of two figures which nobody under 40 remembers will set you back about $60.00 with a ship date of late 2023.
Based on a relatively obscure holiday special that was really hard to find in the VHS era if you didn't tape it off the TV in 1977-1980, you may have seen this pop up on a streaming service or cable with some edits made to it. I assume these will scale nicely with either your Palisades and/or Diamond Select The Muppet Show action figures, and it's great to see Plastic Meatball putting out some old IP as toys just before the sun sets on anyone being young enough to remember what these things actually are.

Cheap DC Justice League Walmart Exclusive Figure Set
|
Via Walmart: DC Comics, Justice League 4-Inch Action Figures 6-Pack. I saw a display of these last Friday at Walmart for $14.88, and I didn't have any of these guys so I took it to the register - and it rang up at $5.00 in store. For six 4-inch action figures, that's a steal. I'd recommend checking it out for yourself, or a gift, or for the toy charity of your choice.
There are no accessories beyond the attached capes, but what do you want for five bucks? The box looks incredibly bland and it's missing the "secret accessories," but the very same Batman is $6.88 on an individual card a few shelves over. Someone you know is going to want this, and many Walmarts have piles of them in their "gift" areas which may not be near the action figure aisle.

Hasbro HasLab Deathsaurus Updates
|
Via HasLab: Transformers Generations HasLab Deathsaurus continues along at 13,528. It's up from 10,752 a week ago, but is still short of the 14,000 needed to hit that first stretch goal.
With eight days left, at its current momentum, it should hit the throne goal of 17,000 - if it can do nearly 3,000 last week, it can probably do it again. By comparison, Victory Saber ended with 26,211 sold units.

Classic Review: Jakks Pacific S.L.U.G. Zombies Hungry Humbug, Nutty Nate, Captain Payback Minifigures 3-Pack from 2012
|
A classic! I've written over 5,000 action figure reviews since 2006, so I'm going to toot my own horn with classic Figure of the Day.
Posted 10 years ago today! The Jakks Pacific S.L.U.G. Zombies Hungry Humbug, Nutty Nate, Captain Payback Minifigures 3-Pack was sold during what felt like a brief, wonderful surge of cheaper unpainted collectible mini-figures. The trend ended pretty quickly and even the indie guys seem to be backing off now, but at least we got some of these guys. Jakks Pacific also showed off logos for Aliens and Monsters lines under its S.L.U.G. brand at New York Toy Fair 2012, but as far as I know no concept art or models every got shown. Read on, it's a good one - and come back tomorrow for an all-new review!

Review: Onell Design Glyos Crayboth Cosmic Wave Action Figure
|
Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
Blue! The Onell Design Glyos Crayboth Cosmic Wave Action Figure came out in 2015, and has been sitting photographed in my folders forever - so let's get this guy up. He's partially painted over clear blue plastic and looks sharp. He was $4, but has long since sold out. Sadly the Onell Design Store has no Crayboth figures in stock today, but probably will again soon. So read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!

The Rondelles Playing in 2022
|
Via Mosswood Meltdown: Mosswood Meltdown's 2023 line-up is partially up and it not only includes the legendary Le Tigre but also the incredible The Rondelles!
You should know The Rondelles, I never got to see them play live when they basically ended their whole deal over 20 years ago. They also were part of the final line-up of Luxo Champ, and backed up "Jet Jaguar" on that group's final CD EP, "A+B," which you will know well if you spent a lot of time in a car with me in the early 00s. I have no idea if there's a tour coming or if this is a one-off, but either way, exciting stuff.

Game Boy Color New Game: Last Crown Warriors on Kickstarter
|
Via Kickstarter: Last Crown Warriors for GB/GBC. There's a free downloadable demo, which shows the game has excellent graphics, awesome music, and very good play control. It looks a lot like Link's Awakening, but boils down to walking to a zone, killing a bunch of monsters, attacking a boss, and running to the next flag and doing it again. After the bases are satisfactorily conquered, you get to fight a boss monster.
At press time it's 50 Euros for the cheapest cartridge (about US $52.63) which isn't bad for a Game Boy Color game when adjusted for inflation. A $30 Game Boy game in 1999 would be about $53.66 in today's dollars, give or take a few cents.
As of my writing this it's 97% funded and cartridges are due in February 2024. (As a rule I recommend adding 3 months to any Kickstarter as a minimum.)

Hasbro HasLab Deathsaurus Gets Throne, Ends Tonight
|
Via HasLab: Transformers Generations HasLab Deathsaurus passed 17,000 early Sunday and is 18,126 at press time. It's up from 13,528 a week ago, which is a pretty big jump - but has a ways to go to beat Victory Saber's 26,211.
This item is set to end tonight - so order it if you want one. And that probably wraps it up for HasLab until at least February 2023. Victory Saber toys are hitting homes now, some without notification, so keep an eye open for those on your porch.

Classic Review: Takara-Tomy Beast Saga Dorfan Action Figure from 2012
|
A classic! I've written over 5,000 action figure reviews since 2006, so I'm going to toot my own horn with classic Figure of the Day.
Posted 10 years ago yesterday! The Takara-Tomy Beast Saga Dorfan Action Figure was a dolphin with a dice launcher, and it's still pretty dang cool. The animal parts are sculpted nicely, and the armor ain't bad either. Read on, it's a good one - and come back tomorrow for an all-new review!

Review: Hasbro Transformers Legacy Core Bomb-Burst Action Figure
|
Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
In the stocking stuffer bins at Walmart, maybe! The Hasbro Transformers Legacy Core Bomb-Burst Action Figure is a good example of a decent toy at an acceptable price - the bat-headed robot turns into a jet! It has no "Pretenders" shell, but it's cute and at $12 you'll actually feel like you got your money's worth. It's also scaled to your 3 3 4-inch action figures. Read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!

Hasbro HasLab Deathsaurus Ends Well
|
Via HasLab: Transformers Generations HasLab Deathsaurus shot up over 6,000 units since yesterday - presumably overseas dumps, but wow, that's a lot. It ended with 25,169 units sold. By comparison, Victory Saber ended with 26,211.
This should also serve as a reminder of just how big Hasbro runs are - when the made-to-order collector thing sells over 25,000 units, you just know the run sizes on the $25 dudes has to be huge.

Star Wars Review: Boba Fett (Droids, The Black Series)
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Boba Fett (Droids, The Black Series). The first time Hasbro has released Vlix in the United States! He's on the packaging twice. There's also a Boba Fett in the box, but you'll take note of Vlix on the back and in the front flap. Also this is the 2013 Boba Fett figure painted to look like his animated armor, which is excellent, but Hasbro has proven they know Vlix exists so now they can make a figure... right? (Coincidentally, Target revealed two more exclusive 3 3/4-inch Boba Fetts today, but I digress.) Read the whole review.

Via an email to backers from Hasbro: "We just learned that the evil Deathsaurus has kidnapped Pipo and Boater! Good news, Transformers fans! Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
He's clear! This Hasbro Marvel Legends 375 Human Torch Action Figure lacks wrist swivels, but he does have cool burning marks on his chest and flames on his head, arms, and legs. New Glyos Drop From Onell Design
|
Via the Glyos News Dump: Glyos Onell Design December 16 2022 Drop Menu.
A new plussed-up Pheyaos called Kaisyriax is Wave 95's new face, and it comes in two colorways. It's worth noting this is only the fourth wave of 2022, and Onell Design chief Matt Doughty wrote this of 2023: "The wave is a decent size, and most likely marks the temporary end of the bigger assortments, due to the continued production delays in China and tightening economy. The next few waves are smaller in comparison and will hopefully cycle a little faster in their appearances here."

BBC Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Action Figures
|
Via The Prop Gallery: Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy (The) (TV) Arthur Dent (Simon Jones) & Ford Prefect (David Dixon) miniature figures. These are seemingly screen-used figures made by the Beeb to use as props in the 1981 TV series. It looks like a mix of 3 3/4-inch Dukes of Hazzard and Buck Rogers action figures by Mego, but I admit, I do not have expertise in the Mego sphere.
If you were a weird kid with a weird dad in the 1980s, you may have seen this show and really love it. And the books, and the radio shows, and so on. However, there weren't any mass-produced toys. I am finding some 3-D printed figures out there, plus some decent custom figures. Having said that, I would love to see the Super7/Zica/Plastic Meatball/etc. firms try their hand at these, some day, if they were so inclined. Or if anyone from Dapol isn't busy, that would be an appropriate form factor.

Via Jackbox games and The Yetee: New Merch, Hoot Dis? New Plushies Available for Pre-Order!. The Drawful owl is $20 and the Job Job M. Bubz is $35.
If you've got friends you haven't seen much in the last 2-3 years, and you're 25-50, you've probably played a fair amount of Jackbox games. You've probably made crudely drawn superheroes while doing magnet poetry job interviews or murdering trivia. As such, this is neat.

|
Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
Already gone? The Hasbro Transformers Legacy Leader Laser Optimus Prime Action Figure is not the fancy amazing toy from Generation 2, but it's a super-articulated more-complicated take on that classic. There's a removable Matrix, a blaster hidden in the the trailer, a sword, and some sort of Energon pizza cutter. It's pretty fun - he has been hanging out on my desk for months. Read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!

New The Outer Space Men Drop: Galactic Holiday 2022
|
Via the Glyos News Dump: Shock - The Outer Space Men Galactic Holiday 2022 Wave. It has been ten years since we got a series of newly-manufactured, not-customized Galactic Holiday figures and we've had very, very few new figures at all from this line in quite some time.
The new series of four is $100 - a lot more than the $40 the first wave was back in 2010 - but they're fully-pained figures including beefier fellows like Colossus Rex, Cthulhu Nautilus, and less beefy people from space like Luna Eclipse and Orbitron. While $100 does seem high... have you seen what Hasbro has been asking for their recent Star Wars 3 3/4-inch repaints lately?
The series are called "Voidrillion Command" and I would love to find out who named these things. Heck, I can ask, so let me send that email. If you've been a reader here for long you know that I've been a big fan of these 3 3/4-inch scale space guys since their 2010 Glyos debut (and also since I read about them in Tomart's) so I am overly excited to have these on the way.

New Toy Pizza with Nice Bug Lady
|
Via the Glyos News Dump: Knights of the Slice - A Riftmas Miracle. Several new 3 3/4-inch Glyos-compatible figures and accessories are up, one of the most compelling of which is a bug lady who, sadly, does not include arms and legs. But it's a great design if you can merge it with one of the cheaper blank figures sold separately. A few older items are also in stock - and they look pretty sharp.
New Banimon Apocalypse Figure, Tank
|
Via the Glyos News Dump: New Banimon, Too - Tanks and Troops.
At $9 the Banigoth figures are cute and fairly cheap. This tank doesn't seem to have all the bells and whistles of the Banimon Red Army T-011 Bunkerbuster Tank Vehicle but it also has a figure in it - so you get a lot of toy in there.

New Game Boy Capture Solution
|
Via t.o.b/: There oughta be a Game Boy capture cartridge.

The Fall: The 1970s 12 CD Box Set Exists
|
Via the radio and Cherry Red Records: The Fall: The 1970s, 12CD Box Set has a whole mess of live shows and what may be the oldest known (or first) recorded live show of Mark E. Smith's ongoing band. Albums include Live at the Witch Trials, Dragnet, bunches of singles, and outtakes, and an additional eight discs of various live shows from 1977-1979. You're not going to like everything they put out... but some of it is really something.
It is also for sale on Amazon and at press time is about $87 before shipping. But you might want to special order it from your local record or music shop, because that would be a nice thing to do if you are inclined to hear six different versions of "Rebellios Jukebox" or eight recordings of "Stepping Out." And really, why wouldn't you be?

Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
An update of a classic! The Hasbro Transformers Legacy Leader Transmetal II Megatron Action Figure is takes and refines an old design. Via Animoblog: December 26, 2022. What's the fuss? He goes through the 2023 catalog to highlight new molds, new paint jobs, and new creatures in general.
There are plenty of sloths and birds, plus future favorites like the Amazon river dolphin and what I can only assume is Bunnicula. There are new versions of a lot of dinosaurs in increasingly silly armor, pigs, birds, the whole bit. There's a lot to like.

Star Wars Review: RC-1140 (Fixer, The Black Series)
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: RC-1140 (Fixer, The Black Series) . If you got Hunter, or Boss, or Crosshair, you'll recognize a lot of the parts. Hasbro actually gave him a new helmet and a new backpack, but other than paint he's pretty much identical to Boss. Is he worth the upcharge? Well, you could wait for a sale these days. Walmart's Alien Gift Set On Sale (may not be in stores)
|
Via Walmart.com and my pal Seth for pointing it out: Alien Ultra Action Figure Set, 6 Pieces. These are all existing molds, including the harder-to-find/later release of the Alien Queen in red with electronics. I d on't believe I've seen this set in stores.
It's currently $22.95, which isn't too shabby for what you get in the box - the giant red Queen alone sold for about that. If they still had the smaller $10 sets in circulation I'd be pushing you toward those hard right now.

Two More Glyos Drops This Week

Review: Spin Master DC Comics Justice League 4-Inch Action Figures 6-Pack
|
Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
Clearance? The Spin Master DC Comics Justice League 4-Inch Action Figures 6-Pack is a lot of toy for the money. Sometimes it scans at $5, and sometimes it scans at $14.88, and that's at the same Walmart on the same day. You get Superman, Batman, The Flash, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and Cyborg in one big set for pretty cheap - but you don't get their backpacks and blast effects. You just get six highly competent figures for less than the price of a single Hasbro 3 3/4-inch "collector" figure - which says a lot. Everybody can do a little better... er, worse... well, the point is you get a bunch of decent cheap figures. I'd love to see more products like this. Do read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!

Via the Glyos News Dump: New Rocom Toys Mighty Maniax Drop Friday, 8:00 AM Pacific! There's a figure that looks like he has a Power Glove, and he's one of five new figures in this Glyos-compatible line which I have done a poor job covering. Well, my loss is your gain - or my gain is also your gain - you can set your clock for too-early-o'clock on Friday to get some new toys!

Star Wars Review: Reva (Third Sister, The Retro Collection)
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Reva (Third Sister, The Retro Collection). She's a Kenner-style figure that came with a pre-wrinkled cape, a pretty good lightsaber, and no eyebrows. I think Hasbro needs to drop the vinyl capes - Kenner did by 1982 - but otherwise, she's a pretty solid figure that you may even find on clearance right now. Read the whole review.
