Review: Healey Made Raider (Hunter)
|
Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
This is a good one! Healey Made Raider (Hunter) sold out quickly - I hope they consider it worth rerunning, because it's cool. The figure contains elements from a number of vintage 1980s and 1970s action figures, and it very obviously owes a debt to Kenner's original Boba Fett - so it's nice to see it in his colors. So read on, and come back tomorrow for more!

Cartoon Reboots Galore - Mission Hill, Star Trek, Beavis and Butt-Head
|
Via StarTrek.com: Star Trek: Lower Decks Sets Release Date. You knew about the show, but maybe not the date. It's August 6, with 10 episodes. What's interesting is that there have been many rumblings about animated shows making a huge comeback thanks to their being easy to make over a long distance. Even Kevin Smith's animated Clerks has been brought up for possible revival - and let me tell you, it was 6 brilliant episodes of TV that you wish you saw. But back to Trek, the voice cast is spectacular.
But there's more! Beavis and Butt-Head are up for their next revival at Comedy Central, but no release date has been given. The last reboot was in 2011 - that's how much time has passed.
Also Bill Oakley & Josh Weinstein Plot Spin-Off Of Cult Animated Series ÔMission HillŐ. The WB show was a secret origin story of Matt Groening, taking place in a big city with lots of what would then be called "colorful characters" but now more accurately would be "people I think I've probably met and/or am." The DVDs are out there and it's a marvelously goofy series from some Simpsons producers that you should see - and the Gus & Wally spin-off should be amazing, if their appearances on the original were any indication. (Meat cleaver.)
In short, it's the golden age of cartoons again? Maybe we'll see new episodes of Space Ghost but for all we know that may change the future of classic rock forever.

Back to the Future Transformers Gigawatt Comes and Goes
|
Via Hasbro: GREAT SCOTT! TRANSFORMERS-BACK TO THE FUTURE COLLABORATION INTRODUCES 'GIGAWATT' CHARACTER - AVAILABLE TO PRE-ORDER NOW! It didn't launch on time, the sneaker bots bought them all, and fans are rightly cranky. There should be more later, but this launch was for 1,985 pieces - many of which are already up for pre-flip on eBay for over $700, because people are monsters.
Hasbro Pulse and other stores unlisted will be offering a second release of this item on or around October 1. This is to tie in to IDW's new crossover comic book. The exact quote from Hasbro for you to decipher: "The GIGAWATT figure is available now for pre-order at Walmart.com with only 1,985 pieces available that feature an exclusive, limited edition numbered package in honor of the 35th anniversary of the first film's release - July 3, 1985. A second variant release of the figure will be available starting October 1, 2020 via HasbroPulse.com and select retailers around the world; part one of the comic book also will be available October 1, wherever comic books are sold."
At the very least this means the packaging can be changed, but for all I know there are deco or accessory changes too. I was unable to order it, but I heard there was a limit of 12 - which isn't much of a limit, given the edition size.

Mini Sega Astro City Mini Candy Cabinet with Console Features
|
Via Kotaku, Sega, and more: Sega Announces Mini Arcade Cabinet Filled With 36 Games. Sega is apparently now in the toy and IP business!
While there is no US release known for this or the GameGear, the cabinet looks neat - not only is it a collectible, but it has an HDMI-out and a USB controller port with a pretty nice controller. Cames include Altered Beast, Alien Syndrome, Fantasy Zone, Golden Axe, and a bunch more not yet announced. At a bit more than 7-inches wide, the controls don't look like they're as cramped as some - but they're still small.
I definitely want that joy pad.

Missed Music in Multitudes
|
Via Castle Face Records: Damaged Bug - Bug On Yonkers was announced and seemingly already sold out - I contacted a local record shop that says they can get some, but it doesn't seem to be available in physical form online anywhere. Bandcamp has the digital for $7 and it should be out July 24. It sounds good so far.
But there's more! Guerilla Toss is releasing Human Girl right now - it's a 2-track single and as far as I can tell there's no physical release to be bought yet. I don't know if it's digital-only.

Shantae Getting Long Overdue GameBoy Color Reissue
|
Via Limited Run Games: Shantae GameBoy Color reissue September 2020. This is a big deal - the original came out late in the console's run from Capcom, after most people moved on to other platforms. It's highly-regarded and rather expensive, so a hopefully cheaper reissue should sell decent numbers. I'll buy one.

HasLab X-Men Legends Marvel's Sentinel
|
Via Hasbro Pulse: X-Men Legends MarvelŐs Sentinel. You have until August 24 to pre-order yours, at which point you will be charged $349.99 for the 26-inch electronic action figure and his buddy Bastion.
Stretch goals are set up as well - unusual for HasLab - but since the item was 50% funded in the first few hours, and about 83% on the first day and it already hit its second stretch goal. The figure is set to ship in fall 2021, and now that it has 2 bonus heads I assume that number is going to climb to 20,000 or more soon.

Nintendo Entertainment System LEGO Set Incoming?
|
Via Polygon and confirmed by LEGO: A Lego NES console set is releasing, and the first teaser trailer is already here. After the leak, this teaser from LEGO confirms it - but I guess we'll pretend we didn't see it? It has a TV, cartridge, controller, and control deck for what is guesstimated over $200. I would argue the TV set is the most interesting part of the collection.
After the rampant success of the NES Mini I hope Nintendo takes a look at its product catalog and considers some new game console with cartridges and the NES form factor. Maybe it's RFID game transmission (like CommTech) rather than the 72-pin connector. Maybe it's literally the same old hardware with HDMI-out and FPGA-style-features for the mass market. Just don't be afraid to cash in, I'll buy more cartridges.

Quintesson Transformers Exclusive Set Coming to Pulse
|
Via Comicbook.com: Transformers: War for Cybertron Trilogy Quintesson Pit of Judgement 5-Pack Unveiled (Exclusive). It is expected to be around $70 - not bad for 2 new mini-figures and a $30, a $20, and a $10 toy - and it's due in September on Hasbro's Pulse store. This might be one of the most fun sets in a while, with the first-ever Quintesson Bailiff toy and a nifty pit playset, and it seems everything in the set has unique deco too.
Most likely this would've been a San Diego Comic-Con item before the complete year of 2020 was canceled. The tease was to promote the absurdly early Fan First Friday livestream tomorrow morning at 9:30 AM Eastern - which is 6:30 AM Pacific. New items are expected from Marvel, Star Wars, and Transformers.

Walmart Adds Dozens of Transformers, Joes, Marvel, Star Wars
|
Via Walmart.com: Walmart Collector Con Hasbro. Hasbro revealed a ton of stuff on Friday, and preorders went up and down (and up and down) all day long - even if the item you want is sold out, maybe look again just to be sure.
Transformers fans got a new wave of Netflix War for Cybertron including some new molds. Soundwave is a tape deck. Bumblebee is an actual licensed VW Bug. Elita-1 is a remolded Arcee. Also you can get repaints of Earthrise Optimus Prime, Wheeljack, Impactor, and Red Alert. Note: on Sunday, my order for Elita-1 was cancelled, and so was a friend's of mine, without notice from Walmart. You may want to check your orders too.
A new 3 3/4-inch G.I. Joe line of repackaged vehicles and figures with new deco and tons of accessories on very nice cardbacks are up for a very fair (given inflation) $13 per figure or $25 per vehicle plus figure. Sure, it's more than the 25th anniversary figures 13 years ago - but that's time and the rise of the middle class in China. Stuff costs more.
Marvel added a Venomized Captain America plus Cable.
Star Wars added 6-inch figures from The Clone Wars of two Mandalorians, Ahsoka Tano, and a new Clone redeco - so basically, something good in every sector.

New Game Boy/Super Game Boy/Game Boy Color: Journey to Oblivion
|
Via 1st Press Games (who previously published Tobu Tobu Girl Deluxe): Powa! for GB/GBC-compatible systems! Pre-orders are live through August 16 and the game is due in a vague "Q3 2020," with pre-orders including beta test access and a collector coin.
There are multiple box, color of cartridge, and bonus variation levels - which is good. The cheapest version is 50 Euros. It also says Q3 2020 - which is over when the beta testing starts - so that seems like it might be in error. At current exchange rate levels, with shipping, it starts at US $70.

Target Exclusive Transformers - Direct to Clearance?
|
Via Target: Transformers War for Cybertron: Earthrise WFC-E30 Decepticon Clones 2-Pack are just arriving in stores over the past 2 weeks - and as of last week, they went from not being in Phoenix at all to showing up for 30% off, despite being full price on the web site.
According to some price tracking web sites there may be plenty available for $17.48 - or $24.99, depending on the store. If you're out and see these, go ahead and scan them - they're basically the Takara-Tomy Legends deco from a few years ago, and significantly cheaper than the Big Bad Toy Store-exclusive Pounce on the secondary market.
As far as I can tell Skywarp and Thundercracker are full price and probably not in stock as of press time.

Analogue Pocket Today?
|
Via Analogue last week: Jul. 27 2020 8 am PST. As I write this Sunday evening, no specifics have been given - is it a pre-order? Review embargo? First in stock? Nobody knows. Analogue farmed its controller duties out to 8bitdo, so it's a big question mark if the system will feel any good. Historically their systems played incredibly well, but also could use vintage controllers.
The estimated $200 portable was originally expected for a 2020 release, but COVID-19 pushed back another run of its NT Mini console by several months. If things continued as planned, the Analogue Pocket would play Nintendo GameBoy family games right out of the box, and adapters for other portables might come later. This is where teh known details have been living so far.

Analogue Pocket Presales Next Week, Delivery 2021
|
Via Analogue: Analogue Pocket Pre-Order info. While the Mega Sg threw in a Master System adapter, a pad to connect to the Sega CD, and a bunch of other odds and ends, it looks like the Pocket will be dividing up everything. USB cables, AC adapters, and everything else are offered separately - like a $30 hard case, a $16 screen protector, and a $100 dock. And $30 adapters for the Game Gear, Neo Geo Pocket Color, and Atari Lynx.
Read the fine print of everything you think you might want to order - because there are some things in the box for the dock that the system doesn't have. The system has the portable and a USB-C cable. The dock has the cable, and a power supply, and an HDMI cable. Since Analogue charges $20 for the USB-C Power Supply, and I assume you want the dock, it's a good idea to figure out what you'll want and need here.
The system has a USB-C cable, but if you want a dock, a case, the screen protector, and the cartridge adapters, you're already looking at over $400 before shipping. Ouch. Goodness help you if you need some MIDI cables too.

Review: Kenner Batman: The Dark Knight Collection Iron Winch Batman Action Figure
|
Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
Old! Kenner Batman: The Dark Knight Collection Iron Winch Batman Action Figure is part of Kenner's Batman revival around 1990, which was mostly Batman with a couple of Jokers mixed in - they were fun. I once got to hang out with Mark Boudreaux from Hasbro (Kenner) in 2000, setting up a booth of Star Wars toys in Plano, TX at a sci-fi con. He gave me the pitch to Warner/DC he and his team gave about why they should be able to do all the Batman figures, because he's all about his "wonderful toys" as Jack Nicholson's The Joker put it. And he was right! These figures are all kind of the same, but the accessories - snow gear, aqua sleds, radar suits, and the works - sold millions of figures. So read on, and come back tomorrow for more!

Gigaleak - Hit The Ice, Lost 1993 Hockey RPG for NES
|
Via Frank Cifaldi (on Twitter, via the Gigaleak): Here's a tiny thing that happened from the Nintendo leaks that makes me happy: among the email attachments was the final, approved build of Hit the Ice, a weird unreleased NES hockey RPG (yes really). The prototype I dumped in 2002 wasn't finished yet.
A prototype dump came up in the past, but according to his notes this was actually finished and approved. The Super NES hit in 1991, so by 1993 nobody was really releasing NES games anymore. The final NES game in the USA, Wario's Woods, would hit in February 1994. Where it was dumped and if more goodies were in there, I don't yet know, but it's exciting!
The big question now with games like this is if it will actually see a release. Limited Run Games just shipped the newly-developed Jay & Silent Bob's Mall Brawl - mine arrived yesterday - and other games are seeing limited releases through a variety of means. Much like big boxed sets of recording studio demo bonus tracks from The Stooges, there could be a market for this kind of thing still - and hopefully someone reaches out and puts out a run of these lost games. I could say "gems" but I have no idea what the puck to expect from a 1993 hockey RPG.

Analogue Rerunning Super Nt
|
Via Analogue: Super Nt Classic, SF, and Black notifications are back up. Another run of the console has been mentioned for a while - and three colors are returning. Transparent is not, nor is the white Ghostly model. The Mega Sg adapters also have reminder notifications back up.
If you don't have one, the Super Nt is the best commercially available new production clone hardware that can play Super Nintendo cartridges from all over the world - I've got one and have used my old games, some Super Famicom titles, and Super Game Boy on it. While expensive, it plays perfectly on an HDTV and there's a handy alternative jailbreak firmware if you're inclined to run homebrew ROMs like New Super Mario Land.
Of course, if you have your old Super NES and an old CRT TV, you're probably just fine.
