Posted 10 years ago today! The Chap Mei Toys Animal Planet Liopleurodon Deep Sea Adventure Set a part of a toy line that was exclusive to Toys R Us, formerly "the world's biggest toy store." The chain was one of America's biggest places to buy toys before it started a hard slide to oblivion about five years ago this month. They had a great section of weird 3 3/4-inch scale action figure toys that were pretty cheap and pretty good - like this one. Read on, it's a good one - and come back tomorrow for an all-new review!

Legend of Zelda: Roguelike Hack

  Via ROMhacking.net: The Legend of Zelda: Ancient Dungeon. It's a free download that spits out a hack of a roguelike dungeon for The Legend of Zelda for the NES. I gave it a whirl and it's pretty darned good - it spits out things like the White Sword upgrade as a random item drop, and it also crams in overworld enemies to really mix things up. I never thought I'd see a Ghini pair and Darknuts and Octorocks in the same room, but there you go. There are new color palettes too and I would absolutely recommend giving this one a shot.
I don't know the next time I'll be on a plane, but I am sure I'm going to bring this with me to play on the flight. It plays like a great thumb-twiddling pass-the-time activity, particularly if you really like combat in this game. Also one tip: some items are dropped, and others are sold, so be sure to pick up all the Rupees you see on the way.

  Via UltimateClassicRock.net: Seymour Stein, Music Executive Who Signed the Ramones, Dead at 80. He founded Sire Records, signed The Ramones, and was involved in a lot of amazing stuff - including Dee Dee King's "Standing in the Spotlight" rap album.

Nostalgic! The Hasbro Transformers Legacy Evolution Deluxe Hot Shot Action Figure is a re-remake of a character from 2002, when he debuted on Transformers Armada. That makes Hot Shot 21 this year. By comparison, G1 was only 17 in 2002... and is 39 this year. But as your joints creak and break, this new Hot Shot has a better range of motion than his pretty awesome ancestor.  Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Boba Fett (Tython/Boba Fett's Starship, The Vintage Collection). It's presently exclusive as a pack-in to a very expensive $200 Boba Fett's Starship re-re-repaint. (Previously the vehicle has been exclusive to Toys R Us in Jango deco, Amazon in Boba Deco, and a shared Fan Channel ESB deco - and this is the Book of Boba Fett flavor.) It's a perfectly nice figure, but at $200 for just a ship repaint and a figure you're probably going to feel this wasn't the best value in the toy store. Read the whole review.

Many Tuesday Morning Stores Closing/Closed

  Via TuesdayMorning.com: 2023 Stores Closing. Apparently, some just up and closed. While I was there I didn't see any signs - one location was just gone a couple of weeks ago, and apparently nearly half of the locations are going away. In Phoenix, both of my usual Tuesday Morning stops are now gone and you can click that link to see what closed near you.
As there is apparently a glut of closeout (and closeout-to-be) toy product in the pipeline, I'm kind of surprised any closeout discounter is having problems right now, but I am not exactly up in them business most of the time.

This is a reissue of a figure that I first got in 1983, and with the new head I'd go as far as to say it seems more like an interesting new variant. The same figure mold - possibly with a recolored cloak, that's inconclusive - will be sold later this year as a The Book of Boba Fett Jedi Academy Luke Skywalker figure. Which seems like something Kenner would've done by the late 1980s. Read the whole review.

Review: Blip Toys Animal Planet Electronic Battling Dinos Set

A cheap thrill! A few months ago I saw this Blip Toys Animal Planet Electronic Battling Dinos Set at Target, and normally it's $40. But it was $20 for two pretty garish and large dinosaurs, three cheap little guys, two horrible humans, a perfectly nice toy helicopter, and a weird little forest mountain treehouse thing. I had to have a crack at playing with it, and it's kind of fascinating as something we don't see much. Sure it's branded "Animal Planet," but let's be honest, this is a generic 3 3/4-inch toy line meant for kids in the orange box with the blue logo. You can pretend it's educational or a tie-in, but it's probably the sort of direction that would be more interesting - but probably not more welcome - with licensed toys. Mattel's Jurassic World toys are largely a pretty good deal, but the humans have high production values and the dinosaurs are no slouch. $20 does not get you nearly as much toy as this set does, even if it is corny in spots.   Via me: I mentioned a haul earlier in the week - I went back Friday night to the first FYE, and another one, and this was what I brought home. All of these Super7 ReAction Figures combined were about $56. Current SRP is in the $18-$20. Best Toy Run in YEARS. (One is Hasbro.). The web site doesn't have many on sale, but in-store I found quite a bit - there are other brands of toys also on sale, so give it a look. Do you need to own Wesley Crusher? Probably not. But for $3.19? Sure.

Not great! The Hasbro Transformers Legacy Deluxe Elita-1 Action Figure is a nice action figure that, at least on my sample, can't seem to shove herself together in car mode.  Via The Toy Book: Mattel, Hasbro Ink Licensing Pact to Create Co-Branded Toys and Games. But how soon is it, and what are we getting? The article says:
"Beginning this fall, Hasbro will offer Barbie-branded Monopoly Games while Mattel will introduce Transformers-branded UNO games. Then, in early 2024, Mattel will unveil a line of Transformers-branded Hot Wheels vehicles." And of course, this is where we all begin speculating that they'll try to merge again.

 Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Biker Scout (The Retro Collection). If you have the 1983 original and his variants, this will look familiar - and weird. The helmet is a little distorted, and Hasbro made some curious deco decisions at the factory level, but it's not awful. It could be better - but the pistol is good and it looks like a Scout Trooper.   Via Atari: Reproduction PCBs for Major Havoc, Black Widow, and Gravitar. We've seen reproduction home arcade cabinets, console game collections, plug and plays, but this is the first time I've seen licensed collectible arcade boards with printed copy and images on them. This seems pretty niche, but so did Rhino Records selling Paul Anka collections in the early 1990s. Your childhood is always a sellable commodity.
