Review: Mattel He-Man and the Masters of the Universe Cartoon Collection She-Ra Action Figure
|
Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
New and maybe in a store near you! The Mattel He-Man and the Masters of the Universe Cartoon Collection She-Ra Action Figure is here to celebrate her 40th anniversary. I didn't see her in many stores, but I was going around on New Year's Day and found a dozen of her in a Walmart near Fisher-Price toys - with other Turtles, Origins, and Masterverse toys- with no space for them on the action figure aisle. Maybe it's worth hunting, or order one online. Do read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!

Via alanyoung001 on Thingiverse: Star Trek 3D Printable Playsets Galore. Make the Voyager Ready Room, the original series McCoy's Six Bay, or The Next Generation's transporter room, observation lounge, or Ten Forward. Star Wars Review: C1 (Penguin, Holiday Droid Factory)
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: C1 (Penguin, Holiday Droid Factory). This was the "secret" figure in last year's Disney Advent Calendar - and it's pretty good. The flourishes look like a cross between a rockhopper penguin and a certain mouse, and while it doesn't have a radar dish it does have a wreath. Read the whole review.

Classic Review: Hasbro Transformers Generations Combiner Wars Bombshell
|
Something new every day-- but this was posted 10 years ago today! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
Posted 10 years ago! The Hasbro Transformers Generations Combiner Wars Bombshell is from 2014, and at the time it was great - a little guy, with a gun mode too? For ten bucks? I wasn't complaining - but Hasbro has since upgraded him to a deluxe class, and that'll probably be the new standard for the coming decade. I still like this one, though. Do read on, and come back tomorrow for a new one!

Nintendo World Championships: Week 26

Via Nintendo: Competition #26 is on now in Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition. It's a pretty good mix.
This week:
Step It Up (Super Mario Bros)
Don't Go Alone (The Legend of Zelda)
Coconut Rush (Kirby's Adventure)
Egg Toss (Super Mario Bros. 2)
Rotary Rush (Super Mario Bros. 3)
I had an easy time with this one, and it seems to be easier before all the really good players come on to give you too much competition. Or at least, that's my guess.

Star Wars Review: Mother Aniseya (The Retro Collection)
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Mother Aniseya (The Retro Collection). Sure, she's from new Disney+ content and not the original trilogy, or Ewoks or Droids or Star Tours or the 1977-1987 Marvel comic book, but she still makes for a decent Kenner-style action figure. Her costume in The Acolyte was incredibly ornate, as was her make-up, and this figure has to tone it down a bit - and does a pretty good job. Her hair is still huge, with some gold in it. Her outfit has a lot of good sculpted detail, including a very Hoth Rebels-esque pattern in the blue part of her costume. She's very much a simplified version of what you saw on the small screen, but if she weren't, she wouldn't be "retro." Give this one a look. Read the whole review.

Review: Mattel Hot Wheels Experimotors See Me Rollin'

Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
Old! I found the Mattel Hot Wheels Experimotors See Me Rollin' in a grocery store last year, and they still seem to be around in some of those big bins. This one is neat, because the back wheel lets you roll a six-sided die, sort of, more or less. Read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!

Review: Mattel Masters of the Universe Origins Dragon Blaster Skeletor Action Figure
|
Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
Gone, but not forgotten! The Mattel Masters of the Universe Origins Dragon Blaster Skeletor Action Figure actually squirts, which means it retains the original 1980s' toy's reason to exist. You get a padlock, you get a metal chain, and you get a lot of articulation - I like it, and I'd say it's worth picking up if you can see it at a reasonable price. Do read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!

Transformers: Reactivate Deactivated
|
Via Polygon and elsewhere: Transformers: Reactivate canceled, studio scaling down. The game had a few toys made for it - a pair of 2-packs were sold online, and an individually boxed Bumblebee was in the main line assortments. The game itself (Previously titled Rise) has been in development for almost an entire console generation cycle, supposedly in the works since 2017. With the news of the studio scaling down, it is much more unfortunate to hear many jobs are being lost at developer Splash Damage.
Of course, TFWiki has a page with the toys and the lack of development of the game. As far as I know, never showed any game footage was revealed and this is going to go on the increasingly large pile of recent dead or presumed dead media. If you were wondering what you may have missed, the answer seems to be "not much."

Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Hera Syndulla (The Ghost, The Vintage Collection). She shares the head and hands with the basic carded figure from Ahsoka, as well as the blaster, but pretty much everything else is new. JCPenney Merging with Forever 21 Owner
|
Via CNN: A zombie mall store king is born: JCPenney merges with Forever 21 owner. As one of the department stores with a small toy department that, amazingly, is still around and pretty neat, I don't know if this is good or not.
CNN says: "The 123-year-old department store chain anchors the new company Ñ a joint venture with Sparc Group, which also owns Lucky Brand, Eddie Bauer, Nautica and Aeropostale. The merger will form a new company called Catalyst Brands, representing a gamble that combining the beleaguered brands will create a new powerhouse of mall staples É that also happen to have AmericaÕs largest mall operators as major financial backers."
With so many malls in my area either literal rubble or being paved over, JCPenney is somehow still standing as a separate thing from the mall. Which is amazing. Hopefully, it sticks around, you can get some decent stuff there on a good day.

Classic Review: Funko Universal Monsters Dracula ReAction Figure
|
Something new every day-- but this was posted 10 years ago today! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
Posted 10 years ago! The Funko Universal Monsters Dracula ReAction Figure is from 2014, meaning ReAction Figures have been doing a pretty good business since then. They were $9.99 at that point, which is a pretty good deal for what you got - today they're $20, but the sculpts have generally improved significantly. I still like this one, he's a little weird but the skinnier take on Drac doesn't have the flourishes that the later redesign would enjoy, making for a figure that is convincingly old-school if not necessarily as Kennery as it could be. Do read on, and come back tomorrow for a new one!

|
Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
A redux you probably didn't need, but it's still pretty colorful. Hasbro Transformers Legacy United Deluxe G1 Universe Quake Action Figure is a double Targetmaster, as time it was a single Titan Master. The new colors are brighter, but the previous one had fancier deco. I like this one, and the last one, with neither having the clear edge. Read on!

Cloudtop Climb (Super Mario Bros. 2) - in which you jump up to the challenge from 1988.

Star Wars Review: 8D8 (The Vintage Collection)
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: 8D8 (The Vintage Collection). This pack-in figure from Jabba's Palace set is an amazing upgrade - with very little articulation. The last release was in 1998, and this one lacks the light-up eyes or torture rack. He has a lot more paint, though, and looks more on-model. You'll want it, but the $89.99 Jabba set it comes in is kinda pricey. Read the whole review.

Review: Mattel Hot Wheels Racer Verse Spider-Man
|
Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
Not new, but cool! I got the Mattel Hot Wheels Racer Verse Spider-Man in a case and it's great. Bright colors, durable materials, nice coloring, and it seems to always be sold out at any store I visit. Mattel made a winner here, I assume this is one of those things future generations of kids will be chasing down 10 or 20 years later, after Mattel stops making it and kids are all grown up. Read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!

Diamond Comic Distributors Files Chapter 11
|
Via Diamond Comics: Diamond Comic Distributors Files Voluntary Petition for Relief Under Chapter 11 . It does not sound good - if you've been following the chatter, the comic book shop industry and distribution game have changed significantly in the past few years. Many of Diamond's best and brightest are still on board, but a lot of other rising stars have found employement elsewhere in recent years.
While there's a lot that will be coming out in the next couple of months - Toy Fair is just around the corner! - they did mention that they have secured financing to pay their bills, and also that they have "a stalking horse bid for Alliance Game Distributors, Diamond has received strong interest in its specialized business divisions, having also entered into a Non-Binding Letter of Intent (LOI) with Universal to acquire Diamond UK. Diamond is actively pursuing offers for, and has received interest from potential purchasers for, its other business units, including Diamond Book Distributors, Collectible Grading Authority, and Diamond Select Toys, as well as its main comic, toy, and collectible distribution lines." Diamond Select Toys has made a lot of good items, and has some tremendous licenses and brands. For example, they picked up the collectibles business from Gentle Giant a few years ago, and have been making some pretty great stuff. My heart goes out to everybody there, and I hope everybody lands on their feet.

Funko Announces Senior Vice President of Brand
|
Via Funko: Funko Announces Jenn Reeves as Senior Vice President of Brand. What does "of brand" mean? I have no idea. But Jenn Reeves previously worked at Stanley 1913, home of the trendy giant mug you can set on fire and keep your ice cold.
Hopefully this means some new products are on the way, the press release name checks "vinyl figures, bags, apparel, high-end collectibles, and accessories." I'm still hoping they lean into baby toys, I bet there's a market you can't glut. As with other stories, presumably we're going to hear a lot more at New York Toy Fair which kicks off March 1.

Star Wars Review: Jabba the Hutt (Throne Room, The Vintage Collection)
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Jabba the Hutt (Throne Room, The Vintage Collection). This is the third toy to use this sculpt, but he had some surprising modifications (a big vinyl square on the underside) and deco that, depending on your lighting situation, might not look as good as the one you already have. This 2024 release came with Salacious Crumb and 8D8 as well as a seat for the big guy, and it's also probably the only affordable version of this particular mold of the space gangster on the market right now. Posted 10 years ago! Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Padme Amidala (The Retro Collection). This is the first - and possibly only - version of Natalie Portman's character in the retro format, and comes complete with cape and blaster. Star Wars Review: Grogu (The Armorer's Forge, The Vintage Collection)
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Grogu (The Armorer's Forge, The Vintage Collection) . While not much of a figure - and technically, an accessory - he's interesting. He actually has a a unique torso with a new torso with the beskar armor, rather than another unadorned brown potato sack. I wouldn't say it's necessarily worth paying $60 for the figure, but with the playset and the Armorer, at least it's unique and different from the many Grogu toys you may already own. I am kind of surprised we haven't gotten a lot more variations of Grogu - him eating, playing, or what have you - as accessories to other toys. As such, it's neat to see something like this. Posted 10 years ago! The Four Horsemen Gothitropolis Flamingus Action Figure is from 2014, and was a Kickstarter item that was about 8 months late - this is what we call on-time for crowdfunding. These molds were sucked into Mythic Legions, and they're really cool - this one started as a raven but was redone to be other birds. I like it a lot, and it's a great collector figure. Store Closures Quantified - and High
|
Via CNBC: Store closures hit highest level since pandemic Ñ see who is shutting down the most locations. I keep a tally of stores I visit and mark closures, and a lot more closed in the past year with the likes of the end of 99 Cents Only, Tuesday Morning, Big Lots, Family Dollar, and a lot of others just vanishing. The article cites closures of Walgreens and others this year - a chain with massive toy support going back down to lower, but still not awful, levels. Overall big store chains are getting bigger and smaller chains that aren't getting gobbled up are closing, with the Walmarts and Amazons of the world doing just fine.
The article shares "Retailers have already announced 1,925 store closures so far in 2025 Ñ and that was only as of Jan. 10." Part of what makes our particular form of consumption possible (and affordable) is mass production, and when you have fewer stores, you have smaller orders. Smaller orders cost ore per unit, so tariffs or not you're probably going to see creeping price increases unless someone in manufacturing finds some math to do where they can assure no on-hand inventory as risk. Which might be good, if places that sell closeouts aren't sticking around.

Via Etsy: USS Flagg Retrofit Galley. In a world with easy-to-do repairs or upgrades or gap-fillers, adding a new play environment to a toy from nearly 40 years ago is a heck of a neat idea. This is a 3D printed item.

MOTU x Stranger Things Vecna & He-Man Out, Half Price?
|
Via Target: Masters of the Universe X Stranger Things He-Man and Vecna Action Figure Set - 2pk. This is fun news, because we've been expecting this set since last year. Why am I linking you to this? I found it in an actual Target store on Sunday, and it was half price - about $17.49 - which is unusual for a brand-new set. Skeletor & Demogorgon have been on shelves for over six months, so it's possible the intention was to clear out the old set before the new one came in - and things just happened to work out in my favor. You should go to Target this week and scan it, because $17.49 for two figures is a steal.
I was out looking for the Concept Hordak & Grizzlor set, which I hadn't found still, but hey - this is good too.

Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
Old! But neat. Kenner The Adventures of Batman and Robin Pogo Stick Joker Action Figure takes the original mold, gives him a blue suit, and adds a rocket-firing pogo stick blaster. It's really charming, and the kind of thing completely lacking from today's Batman action figures. You do get accessories, but you do not get kinetic or weird ones - this is both of those things. Curtain Call: Iggy (Super Mario Bros. 3) - in which you tell the nerd to shut up.
Magic Jar Excavation (Zelda II: The Adventure of Link) - in which you say yes to pot.
Evasion Is Key (Super Mario Bros. 2) - in which you unlock a door.
Who doesn't love a good dig for a magic jar? I really liked going for the trophies this week.

Star Wars Review: Clone Trooper (Phase II/Revenge of the Sith, The Retro Collection)
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Clone Trooper (Phase II/Revenge of the Sith, The Retro Collection). It's decent, but it has a neck - something most Kenner-era troopers lacked until Return of the Jedi. He's a little scrawny and while it looks like a clone, it's probably my least favorite figure in the collection. Read the whole review.

Review: Mattel Hot Wheels Racer Verse Jack Skellington
|
Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
Not new, but cool! I got the Mattel Hot Wheels Racer Verse Jack Skellington and I see it individually, or in a two-pack, but not very often. He sells quickly - so if you like it, and see it, you should pick it up. It's a sturdy little snowmobile with wheels, and it's fun to fuss with. I need to set up my tracks and give him a shot as a racer, but at least it's a decent-looking monster toy. Read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!

Review: Super7 Universal Monsters Creature from the Black Lagoon ReAction Figures
|
Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
It's not too late! The Super7 Universal Monsters Creature from the Black Lagoon ReAction Figures is available in multiple colorways, but this is the "classic" version. He's sculpted by an ex-Kenner guy, which is why the pose and detail may feel very familiar. I really like this one - if you see it around, you should pick it up. Do read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!

Star Wars Review: Bo-Katan Kryze (Single, Epic Hero Series)
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Bo-Katan Kryze (Single, Epic Hero Series). The figure itself is identical to the version in a two-pack at Walmart with Moff Gideon, but this individually carded release has a unique accessory. Is it worth buying twice? Well, only if you're that kind of person. It's a good figure though, and it might be at a Ross near you for around four bucks - which is absolutely worth the wait in line. Read the whole review.
