16bit.com Figure of the Day Updated
|
Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting non-Star Wars Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
Weapons packs are a rarity these days, particularly good ones, and especially customizable ones. The Spy Monkey Creations Doppelganger Armory Series 1 Accessory Pack go up for order on Friday and are spectacular. You can reconfigure them as they're designed with Glyos pegs. They're scaled for your larger figures. And if you want, some of the pieces work great with your Glyos or Outer Space Men figures. So read on, read our Star Wars one too, and come back soon for more!

Transformers Microns: New Molds for Japan from Kabaya
|
New from Japan! The Allspark has shots of New Molds Microns (Mini-Cons) coming to Japan for Transformers Prime, which is exciting because new molds are far and few between for this line. (I think last year we got about 3.) They seem to transform into weapons, with robots resembling Optimus Prime and Bumblebee, and two others which turn into a gecko and a snake. I'm sold.

LEGO Lord of the Rings Official Images

Our pals at The Brothers Brick posted the first Lord of the Rings LEGO Minifigure Pictures! They also link to descriptions of the sets, which we've previously linked to as blurry, prototype shots. New figures include Gandalf, four Hobbitses, Aragorn, Boromir, and Legolas. And of course Gimli, who is disturbingly missing his axe in the picture. (I need his axe.)

USA Today Previews Amazing New G.I. Joe Retaliation Figures
|
Oh man. Apparently to make better movie action figures, you need to make your movie look like it's populated by toys. USA Today revealed Nine Hasbro Figures from G.I. Joe Retaliation yesterday including Roadblock, Cobra Commander, and others. Surprisingly, the entire line looks like a lot of fun and seems to have more to do with recent action figure releases than the previous movie-- there is still a lot of black, but there's other color too.
Expect more from Toy Fair next week!

Xbox fans, it's time to download Double Fine Happy Action Theater, a $10/800 point game whose name seems like a gag. Microsoft says:
"Are you annoyed at how little magic you are able to shoot from your fingers? Have you ever tried to get grandma to do the worm, but all she would do is just stand there? The site Ninja Pizza has tons of 2012 TMNT Product Up including classic figures! The new "classic" figures are a mix between the 1980s releases and the original 1980s cartoons-- I like what I see. (Who knows Playmates' PR number?) The entire collection looks amazing, there's also a giant sewer playset coming which is not pictured here. But put some socks on, so it can knock them off.

Playmobil Germany Has Tons of New Stuff
|
The Playmobil hobo-- which you can see at the top of pretty much every page on this site-- was, for a long time, the highest of the high marks of what amazing things Playmobil can do. Playmobil 5271 Hotel Room Service/Housekeeping is one of many new hotel sets, which had me rolling with glee. This is one of dozens of new sets announced for Germany in 2012, meaning they should hit the USA in 2013. She has a washing machine, cleaning cart, ironing board, and other goodies.
Of note: the keg is being reissued, the hotel theme, new dinosaur sets, Olympics-themed sets, and a revival of the western theme with a really great bandit/robber set.
I sincerely do not expect anything to be announced in New York this weekend to be more delightful than this. Prove me wrong, is all I'm saying.

Toy Fair Galleries Galore
|
I've been in dozens of press events and meetings and snapped hundreds if not thousands of photos so far. I'm tired, and the bad thing here is this will slow down new news. Here's a list of highlights, followed by galleries of new stuff to see.
- Mattel will make a Back to the Future II Hoverboard Prop Replica. Preorders in March, delivery late this year, price estimated at $120. This may be the biggest news of the show. Photography was not allowed but it's probably out there somewhere.
- Diamond Select Toys will make a Minimates Star Trek Classic Enterprise with a pop-open saucer with a captain chair. Again, no photos.
- DST got The Expendables and will be doing a lot of toys.
- The Four Horsemen announced a new Outer Space Men character named Terra Firma.
- NECA got Prometheus, no product was shown.
- Funko got Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgandy, and tons of other awesome surprise properties. Their Mars Attacks T-Shirts are incredible.
- New Masters of the Universe Classics include a Snake Men 2-pack, Spikor, and Frosta.
There's more but geez, there's a lot.

More galleries, more tidbits.
- The Bridge (Annoying Orange, Justin Bieber dolls) has the license for The Hobbit, which was shown behind closed doors.
- Playmates' new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sewer playset is like 40-inches tall and the most impressive playset of the decade. Mark my words.
- Hasbro will be making numerous Transformers toys exclusive to Asia, Canada, and/or Europe screwing the US out of several toys. Baffling. Hasbro Transformers: other than maybe Bot Shots, you are dead to me for 2012.
- The Skylanders booth has an exclusive figure, a metallic purple Cynder.
- NECA got Prometheus, no product was shown.
- There are Two Toy Fair Playmobil freebies-- a girl in a dress, and a pirate. Just walk up to the booth and grab 'em, there's a basket.

This week's WiiWare offering is nothing. How can this be?
The Virtual Console has Strider, bringing an end to months of absolutely nothing. This is the Sega Genesis port, and is $8/800 points. While laughably tiny today, this game's big selling point upon its release was that it had a "massive" amount of memory as an 8 megabit cartridge.

Transformers Bot Shots Launchers, 3-Packs Found
|
Phoenix area Walmarts have the new Bot Shots Launchers and 3-Packs for $8.96 each, if you got there before I did. I believe Target will be charging $7.99 for the launchers and I'm not so sure about the 3-packs.
Notable: Optimus Prime has very different power numbers than his single-carded counterpart. He's also painted differently-- the launcher version has much brighter, richer colors and I daresay looks better between the two. So if you're looking to skip redeco figures, you might want to pass on basic single Optimus and just get the launcher for the better-looking figure.
Also notable: Bumblebee 3-pack is different than Bumblebee Single, but I'm lazy and it's after midnight and I'll shoot it later, dadgummit. If you're short on funds, get the Megatron/Nemesis Prime/Acid Storm set first due to shortpackedness.
For those keeping track, there are now at least 13 unique Bot Shots at retail, and over 40 expected in 2012.

Aquabats TV Show Preview
|
Sure, it's been gestating since the mid 1990s, but the Aquabats Super Show is being previewed in iTunes, and will air on the Hub (Hasbro cable channel) in a few days. There's a short free preview which is an interesting mix of camp, low-budget action fun, and the old Adam West Batman show. I think this should be big. Or at least worth watching once.
