Classic Review: TheGodBeast Customs Glyos Red Sharkorvor Head Glyos Accessory
|
A classic! I've written over 5,000 action figure reviews since 2006, so I'm going to toot my own horn with classic Figure of the Day.
Posted ten years ago today! The TheGodBeast Customs Glyos Red Sharkorvor Head Glyos Accessory was released in 2011, back when we only had the two Armorvor heads - the wolf, and the helmeted wolf. He made some awesome ones, and this clear red shark was one of my early favorites. We got more mass-produced ones (and a heck of a lot of customs), so take a look at something you may never see again anywhere else. Read on!
Come back tomorrow for an all-new review!

Star Wars Review: Morgan Elsbeth (The Retro Collection)
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Morgan Elsbeth (The Retro Collection). This figure has no accessories, and is missing some key make-up detail, but is otherwise pretty excellent. I just saw her on clearance at Target over the weekend, but she's been scarce. New NES Kickstarter: The Storied Sword (with Demo)
|
Via Kickstarter: The Storied Sword is a new game for fans of old video games and... well, if you look at it or the demo file you'll see some familiar inspiration. Specifically The Princess Bride movie and the NES games for Batman and Ninja Gaiden.
It was funded on the first day, with a $10 ROM, $45 cartridge, $60 boxed cartridge, and other tiers - you know, par for the course.

99 Cents Only to Close All Stores
|
Via CNN: 99 Cents Only Stores is winding down its business operations.
As a place to buy toys, it's been weird - but good. LEGO dumoed some LEGO Dimensions games packs here, you could buy Hot Wheels cars, you could find those weird cheap bagged Hasbro Marvel figures, and various sodas or other ramens and snacks. It's been a little lacking for toys lately, and I guess now we know why. With Dollar Tree also closing some stores, and Tuesday Morning closed, I can't say I'm feeling great about the future of retail stores with a few pegs devoted to toys.

Classic Review: Burger King Universal Monsters Down for the Count Dracula
|
A classic! I've written over 5,000 action figure reviews since 2006, so I'm going to toot my own horn with classic Figure of the Day.
Posted ten years ago today! The Burger King Universal Monsters Down for the Count Dracula was released in 1997, as a freebie with a kid's meal. I remember thinking it was a steal back then, and now it's still something I can't believe exists as we hear fast food places going out of their way to make less interesting toys. I hope you like paper activity books - or digging through bagged toys at the thrift shops. Go get one of these, it glows. Read on!

Review: Hasbro Transformers Studio Series 86 Deluxe Brawn
|
Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
Old! The Hasbro Transformers Studio Series 86 Deluxe Brawn is starting to pop up at closeout, and I was going to recommend it at $25. At $9 or less, it's a steal - not perfect, I don't love the yellow paint over the green plastic, but it's still pretty great. Read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!

MOTU x Stranger Things in/out/in/out of stock
|
Via Target: Stranger Things Action Figure Set - 2pk
The set seems to be going in and out of stock online, which probably means stores are about due for some inventory. Skeletor seems to have the first laughing Origins head, with a Demogorgon that mixes up new and old parts - you'll recognize Beast Man's body and armor. The D20 staff is new, and Skeletor should be shiny when you find this for $34.99. Stores seem to be having a late-season aisle reset, so I assume you can pick it up in the coming week or two - so keep a look out. Presumably Turtles of Grayskull Krang will be in Walmarts, too.

Review: Super7 Dungeons & Dragons Sacred Statue ReAction Figure
|
Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
Newish! This Super7 Dungeons & Dragons Sacred Statue ReAction Figure has one of the smallest accessories I've ever seen on an action figure. I have a Luke with a grain of rice-sized commlink, but the statue has an eye that's even tinier. It's a neat, weird figure that you'll want to use as a decoration in a diorama, or just enjoy. I don't know a lot about D&D but a friend of mine makes a cool playset and I said "I need this standing up next to the door." It's just cool. Do read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!

Unofficial Wii U, 3DS Online Server
|
Via Pretendo: Pretendo is a free and open source replacement for Nintendo's servers for both the 3DS and Wii U, allowing online connectivity for all, even after the original servers are discontinued. Well, we all knew it was coming - I'm looking forward to playing Mario Kart 7 online again.
This sort of thing is the future of classic gaming - support will end, so it's up to enterprising fans (and probably liberated hardware) to get anything going again.

Star Wars Review: Saw Gerrera (The Black Series)
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Saw Gerrera (The Black Series). This is not a figure that kept its value, but it is a pretty good one. It's loaded with sculpted detail, some of which isn't painted, but it's excellent at the current market prices. Read the whole review.

Classic Review: Hasbro Transformers Generations 30th Anniversary Megatron with Chop Shop
|
A classic! I've written over 5,000 action figure reviews since 2006, so I'm going to toot my own horn with classic Figure of the Day.
Posted ten years ago today! The Hasbro Transformers Generations 30th Anniversary Megatron with Chop Shop in circulation for a very long time - I want to say it may have been two years, with this set (and Optimus and Megatron and Starscream) getting new packaging jobs and expanding beyond Target, Walmart, and Toys R Us to places like Big Lots and Family Dollar. The set has an obscure Insecticon as an accessory for a very comic-specific version of Megatron - and at ten bucks, it wasn't bad. It wasn't an amazing bargain, but for a bug buddy and a toy that (by today's standards) would probably be $11.99? I think highly of this set. Read on!

Review: Hasbro Transformers Missing Link C-01 Optimus Prime (Convoy) Action Figure
|
Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
New - but he looks old! The Hasbro Transformers Missing Link C-01 Optimus Prime (Convoy) Action Figure is one of those figures where at first glance, it's a 1984 toy. It has a lot more under the hood, like tons of articulation and sculpted details that replace the stickers from the original toy. It's gorgeous and the kind of thing you should pick up even if you don't collect Transformers. If you don't have a collection and only want one toy, this is the kind of toy you should grab. Read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!

Star Wars Review: Count Dooku (The Vintage Collection)
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Count Dooku (The Vintage Collection) . This figure is excellent - I got a bum one with two identical upper arms, and I still was thoroughly impressed by the likeness, detail, deco, articulation, and especially the cape. It's by no means perfect, but considering the last movie Dooku we had was over 10 years ago it's an easy figure to like. Also it seems to be selling out, so go get yours before it's gone. Read the whole review.

Hasbro Gaming/WOTC President Resigns
|
Via Board Game Wire: Hasbro Gaming, Wizards of the Coast president Cynthia Williams resigns after two years in role. They write:
"Hasbro said in the filing it is conducting a search for her successor, and will be considering both internal and external candidates, but is yet to make a further statement on WilliamsÕ resignation."
The toy business has been looking for its footing after a big surge in business leading to an era of some change - so what's next for them? I have no idea. But now you also have no idea. You're welcome.

Game Boy Radio Cartridge
|
Via BucketMouse on Twitter (or orangelgo): Have you seen orangeglo's FM cartridge? It's freaking neato. This is the only radio I own, other than my car radio I guess lol. There's a link for updates if this ever gets made as a kit or a finished unit, and of course, I signed up for it.
Back in the day, the Game Gear had a TV tuner - something that would likely never work with Nintendo's hardware. But this? Analog radio still has a place, so this actually seems pretty cool if somewhat impractical. It's fascinating to see what you can do with the old hardware, and I hope people find a few more useful (or at least surprising) applications between now and the time our generation just stops caring.

Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
Old! The Hasbro Transformers Generations Legacy Velocitron Speedia 500 Collection Blurr is seemingly now finally vanishing from closeout store shelves, and that means he's oddly getting a smidgen closer to retail price. And he's pretty good - I dragged my feet forever before getting one and the results are on the happy side of decent. Read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!

Hasbro Licenses Power Rangers to Playmates
|
Via Hasbro: HASBRO AND PLAYMATES TOYS ENTER STRATEGIC RELATIONSHIP TO PRODUCE AND DISTRIBUTE POWER RANGERS PRODUCT GLOBALLY STARTING IN 2025.
What you will care about: "Playmates is debuting its first POWER RANGERS collection with a kid targeted MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS toy line in 2025." Further details are a little sparse so far.
Playmates will often focus quite a lot of attention on a successful brand, like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Star Trek in the 1990s. And not focus on it when it isn't working, like Star Trek since 2009. We saw what Hasbro did with Power Rangers, much like we once saw what Galoob did with Star Trek: The Next Generation. We could see a line that has a year and goes back to Hasbro, or we could see a new definitive brand statement - it's hard to say anything other than "it'll probably be cheaper."

Old! This Super7 Planet of the Apes Gorilla Soldier (Patrolman) ReAction Figure is a real classic, complete with a retro rifle and five points of articulation. It looks and feels a lot like actual old toys - that's why I love the Apes segment of this line so much. Do read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!

NES Kickstarter: Chew Chew Mimic
|
Via Rigg'd Games and Lowtek Games on Kickstarter: Chew Chew Mimic for NES. If you like D&D and Chu Chu Rocket, this might be for you - as of press time it is fully funded with 28 days to go.
Like most NES games these days, a bare cartridge is $40 and a boxed game is $60. That may sound like a lot, but I put $60 in an inflation calculator and set it to 1989. A typical good new NES game was $40 back then, and in 2024 dollars, that's about $100.75. ETA is July 2024, which is pretty fast if they can make it.

|
A classic! I've written over 5,000 action figure reviews since 2006, so I'm going to toot my own horn with classic Figure of the Day.
Posted ten years ago today! The October Toys OTMF Glow in the Dark Toy Break Mini-Figure comes from that brief, glorious era where a bunch of indie toymakers zigged while urban vinyl zagged and gave us neat, cheap, designer toys that more or less fits in with M.U.S.C.L.E.. And this one glows! And promotes an old streaming toy show. I like it. Read on!

Turtles of Grayskull Sla'ker, Krang Hitting
|
Via me: Target's Masters of the Universe x Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Sla'Ker Action Figure is available for pick-up at their stores now, and you might just stumble on Krang at Walmart - I found him on Friday. (He sold through by Sunday.) They both use the XL Andre the Giant buck, which means Sla'ker is huge in addition to having Metal-Boto's head and crotch with upper legs. It's a pretty good figure, and Mouse-Jaw is on clearance at Target for 50% off (or better) now.
Good hunting - this seems to be a soft toy aisle reset, too. Each of these exclusives is around $25, but the $20 basic figures are still in short supply at big box around here. Keep your eyes open, Target seems to have more than Walmart.

Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
New! The Hasbro Transformers Legacy United Voyager Origin Wheeljack Action Figure is one of the first characters you saw in 1984 on the original cartoon, and now you might find a toy of it at Target. It's a deluxe-sized robot but a Voyager due to the complexities of transformation, accessories, and storage capacity for Bumblebee. It's a little chunky but also pretty amazing in terms of what it can do. Read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!
