Review: Hasbro Transformers Generations War for Cybertron Trilogy Sparkless Bot Action Figure
|
Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
Clean but dirty! The Hasbro Transformers Generations War for Cybertron Trilogy Sparkless Bot Action Figure is a decent mold with a surprisngly ornate rusty deco applied to an otherwise uninteresting car. The level of detail is impressive, as is the fact that it's all tiny dots. In person, it's gorgeous - I hope you can find one. So read on, and come back tomorrow for more!

Analogue: SG, Super NT Coming and Pocket Delayed
|
Via Analogue's Twitter: Pocket is delayed and shipping in October 2021.
Super Nt will be restocked in April. Mega Sg and DAC shortly after.
The Super Nt and Mega Sg have been in stock for periods of time (but not in the last year), and the DAC has as well - so it's nice they're coming back. The Pocket has never been in stock and pre-orders came and went in minutes - it was also due around now, so you're probably not going to be able to get a pre-order in for quite some time.

New - and available! Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: The Child (The Black Series 6-Inch). This one was packed with Target's exclusive 6-inch Mando, and has an arm permanently raised, reaching out. Also the flying pram from the end of season one. NES - Two More Kickstarters End This Week
|
Via Kickstarter: Ghoul Grind: Night of the Necromancer. I just found out about this one - it ends in the morning today, and already hit its goal. $35 for a cartridge, $55 for a boxed one, and the estimate for delivery is October. So assume December or January. There is a demo.
Also on Kickstarter, and ending Thursday, is Magnilo - New Action Adventure game playable on the NES. It's already funded - $40 for a cartridge, $50 for a boxed game, and oh boy howdy there are other bonus items.

|
Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
Clean but dirty! The Lanard Toy Alien 7-Inch Warrior Xeno Action Figure is blue, just like in the... well, nothing. So read on, and come back tomorrow for more!

Kickstarter - MST3K Announces App, New Episodes
|
Via Kickstarter: Let's Make More MST3K & Build THE GIZMOPLEX! Up to a dozen new episodes and shorts - and live events - are on deck for this if it gets funded. New episodes as early as the fall, they say. Is it possible? I mean, sure, I guess. The last batch went out to Netflix and I assume this is going to be completely funded by dinnertime tonight.
The thing is to fund a new business which seems to be a subscription model for a service that's just MST3K, and depending on the subscription it's about $10/month. So it's like Netflix, with less content.

Star Wars Review: Greef Karga (The Vintage Collection)
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Greef Karga (The Vintage Collection). He's based on the season two costume, which looks great - that means he traded the mustache for a beard, and it's a little thin on this figure. Still, the costume translates nicely to a toy and the range of motion is pretty good considering his robes. The blaster has a working holster, too. Read the whole review.

New Transformers - Studio Series Slag Coming?
|
Via TFormers and others: Transformers Studio Series 86 Slag Leader Class Figure Images!?!. Slag and Daniel have been on leaked lists, a Walmart.com listing, and now there are pictures of what certainly appears to be those very toys.
The toy is a Leader-class sized robot with coloration matching the cartoons, meaning a red robot head and silver Triceratops horns. Daniel is pretty simple. The set doesn't include a sword but does have a blaster. No rocket launchers were included. In many respects, it most closely resembles Japan's (and Pulse's) exclusive Volcanicus boxed set toy.

Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
Cyclonus, sans armada! The Hasbro Transformers Generations War for Cybertron Kingdom Voyager Cyclonus Action Figure is a pretty big remake of a figure that is known for being pretty big. There's no Targetmaster buddy or sword, but it's still a pretty fantastic reimagining of an old toy through the lens of the movies and comics. So read on, and come back tomorrow for more!

Star Wars Review: R2-Series Astromech Droid White with Red Panels
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: R2-Series Astromech Droid White with Red Panels. I took a while to get to a lot of these droids, but the white dome look is pretty distinctive - and the red panels are a little bit different than some of the other ones Disney put out. It doesn't remind me of any specific droid in any of the TV shows or films, but at least it looks different than a lot of the other figures in my droid collection. Read the whole review.

Star Wars Review: Ben (Obi-Wan) Kenobi (Kenner, The Black Series 6-Inch)
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Ben (Obi-Wan) Kenobi (Kenner, The Black Series 6-Inch). This one takes an existing mold, and paints it in 1978 colors. The cloth cape is gone, replaced by a vinyl cape - which works surprisingly well. This is absolutely more of an art piece or a display piece - and it's seemingly sold out for a while. Read the whole review.

Game Boy Color - Doc Cosmos
|
Via Bitmap Soft: Doc Cosmos Ð Gameboy Colour. There's a video of the game in action, which has a clever time-travel gimmick. It's color, but you can go "back in time" to a Gatorade-themed 1989 world to puzzle through things. If the music on the video is any indication of the final game, this might be really good.
Coming from the UK, it will be expensive for US fans - a boxed copy is just north of US $60 delivered. Given the soundtrack and graphic design, it seems to borrow heavily from European microcomputer games of the 1980s.

New Transformers Authentics Barricade Spotted in US
|
The new smaller Bravo-class Transformers Authentics Barricade was found by a fan in the USA, and that fan has a name - me! A Phoenix-area Dollar General put them out last week and I found one while my wife and I picked up a pizza. By which I mean she got the pizza and I dashed in the store. It has a surprisingly involved transformation for the size and price (and for the other toys in the assortment), with a look combining The Last Knight toy with G1 sensibilities.
You should get it.

Who's excited for the little guys? Not you, because they're still in stock and you didn't buy them! Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Shoretrooper (The Black Series 6-Inch). It's a rerelease! New Game Boy Drop From Limited Run Games
|
Via the LRG Insta: Two awesome classic Game Boy games are getting reprints only available on LimitedRunGames.com. Pre-order StarHawk and Metal Masters this Friday at 10AM ET / 7AM PT for four weeks.
StarHawk is a 2D shooter, and looks like a lot of fun - I don't remember this one. Metal Masters looks like a robot fighting game A used Metal Masters goes for $35-$45 (no box or manual) on eBay, while StarHawk is a Europe-only game that goes for about $100. LRG will be charging $34.99 each. Both are relatively obscure titles, but getting first-party reruns seems unlikely these days. If you look at record collecting - and movie reissues - sometimes it took a while to get the heavy hitters to put out new wax, or release something on a home format at all. The complete Woodstock recordings took 50 years.

Kickstarter - Retro Online Game Service
|
Via Kickstarter: Piepacker, online multiplayer for retro games. This is an online game services which, I'll be honest, I don't entirely understand - there's a cart dumper of sorts, an online matchmaking service, and built-in (or included) games like the very good NES Micro Mages, which all NES kids should pick up and play.
The service supposedly kicks off in a few months with the device in November. As it's in a prototype stage now - and coming from Europe, and not already in production - I never know if they can make the goals. (I assume you should pad all crowdfunded projects by two months to a year at least.) It's going to be funded this week, at the current rate, so hopefully we'll read about how this online retro game playing service works.

Imaginext Anniversary On Sale at Kroger Grocery Stores?
|
Via Kroger stores (Fry's Marketplace in Phoenix): 20th Anniversary Single Figure Assortment figures are not only showing up in more stores, but here, they're on sale. If there's a Kroger-owned grocery chain near you, like Fry's Marketplace or Fry's Signature in Phoenix or Scottsdale, go look. The retro space, castle, and pirate figures are on sale for $1.74 - down from normal price of $2.49, which is still really cheap for a 3-inch plastic figure.
What's particularly funny is I bought my very first Imaginext Castle Trial Set at that same location nearly 20 years ago. (Probably 18 or 19 years ago.) If memory serves it was five bucks and I was curious what t hey were like, so I got it. There was no space line at the time, but the set did have a comment card - which I filled out, asking for space sets. (This was after I finished college, for those keeping track.) The line has had numerous face lifts and big changes to figures early on, and several generations of similar themes. One of the earliest dinosaur lines had trigger-activated features - and the triggers were usually between their legs. Oops.
Why should you care about these new guys? Jett Cosmoblast and FP-636 are modeled after vintage Adventure People figures. Jett is an updated Alpha Interceptor pilot, and FP-636 is X-Ray Man - which previously got a nod as a mystery-bag figure about three years ago. The head and colors are a little different this time.
Of course, we'll be reviewing the new guys here shortly as our next open review slot is late May.

The Prisoner Action Figure Kickstarter Passes Goal
|
Via the ghost of Patrick McGoohan: The Prisoner Retro Style Action Figures. Seemingly designed to go with your Palitoy or Dapol figure collection, these 5-jointed figures are the kind of thing you would have seen collecting dust in a Starlog store in a mall in the mid-1990s, had they existed.
While not cheap - $24 a hit - the licensed action figures show that there's a lot of money to mine out of cult TV fans, particularly bored ones during a pandemic without a lot else to blow wads of cash on. It's not like we're seeing movies, or going to conventions, or tricking the countess into marriage and scurrying off with her vast fortune to fund a sprawling criminal underworld that controls the shipping of the world's sneaker supply.

NYCC Supposedly On
|
Via CNBC and many: New York Comic Con will be hosted in person in 2021 with limited capacity.
The convention is held in Javits Center, same as Toy Fair. Toy Fair is a lightly attended event, with about 30,000ish people and it's pretty crowded. New York Comic Con, in the same building, packs them in like sardines - getting close to 200,000. While there are plans for masking and distancing, the attendance of the show would have to be drastically reduced - decimated, frankly - to get some decent elbow room. Ask anyone at New York Comic Con 2019 about the bathroom situation - it can be pretty touch and go for Toy Fair, just because lots of people drink a lot of coffee.
I hope it happens - it, along with C2E2, ECCC, D-Con, SDCC, and others are all planned for Q4 of this year. At this time I'm not planning on going to anything until at least next year, but things can change. Maybe. If people take care of themselves.

New Video Game Console - Evercade Vs.
|
Via Evercade: The Evercade Vs. is a console version of its Evercade portable game system, which sells alongside retro game collections on cartridge. It's mostly stuff from the 80s and 90s, with some modern homebrew/aftermarket game collections as well. Reviews of the portable were pretty positive, and this new TV-connected console has two cartridge slots in its chamber lid and 4 USB controller ports.
There are a lot of retro consoles out there, with this being one of the cheaper ones to incorporate cartridges. Most are non-expandable things (like the NES Classic), although there are emulation-based boxes from Hyperkin and the RetroUSB and Analogue FPGA-based systems with no cartridges included as well. You can buy cartridges and the portable console on Amazon right now and according to reports, licensing will keep the console version from playing the Namco collections (until they update the firmware or someone hacks it.)

New Music from Danny Elfman
|
Via many, but here's a pre-order link from Amazon (but buy it at your local record store): Big Mess. Last year he released "Happy," which sounds sort of like an Oingo Boingo song, and of course wouldn't you know it there's a full dang album coming! It's due in June. And of course, there's vinyl.
It will have a new version of "Insects," which is a fantastic song, and old Macintosh gamers will remember it being sampled on Ben Haller's amazing Solarian II. See, it's retro gaming, everything is. Will it be good? Well, you know how it is. Even if it is, you're not the same as you were when So-Lo came out, nor the Boingo farewell live album from over 20 years ago.

Forum Reveals Playmobil Back to the Future III Advent Calendar Contents
|
Via Playmofriends: BTTF III Advent Calendar (70576), train coming? . The set is not news - Playmobil 70576 Back to the Future Part III Advent Calendar has been up for pre-order at some online stores. What was in it, however, was a mystery until now.
Highlights include 1955 white wall tires and 1885 rail tires for the DeLorean - rather than forcing you to buy a new car - graveyard equipment and a tombstone, Clara Clayton, Mad Dog Tannen, old-style cameras, "Clint Eastwood," and a bunch of other goodies. This is a gem of a set and I'll be buying it, of course.
At this time there are no known plans for additional sets, like trains, or the bar, or anything else - but that could change. These sets would go well with any new or existing Western sets you've bought over the last 45+ years.

We're taking donations for server costs! Really. One of the rewards is Q&A a few days early - you can read next Monday's installment as soon as it's ready, which can be as early as 12:01 AM my time on Monday!
Become a Patron!
If you've got a dollar a month to share, please Visit the Galactic Hunter Patreon and help cover our server costs. I'll still put in hours of work, writing, photography, and research for you - I just need some help making sure that the site costs me only time, and hopefully not money. Thanks for your support!
If you want a piece of merchandise, we now have one! The 16bit.com and Galactic Hunter Collectible Enamel Pin is now available on Etsy. Money goes to me, after Etsy fees, shipping, and whatnot.

Star Wars Review: Zutton (The Vintage Collection)
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Zutton (The Vintage Collection). This mold was previously sold as a Target exclusive in a 3-pack a few years ago, and now it's back! At first glance it's pretty much the same as that first release. At a longer glance, it's also pretty much the same as the first release with a bit more of a paint wipe and slightly glossier hair. If you have the first version, you probably don't need the new one - but it's worth a look anyway. Read the whole review.

Star Wars Review: Cad Bane (The Black Series 6-Inch)
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Cad Bane (The Black Series 6-Inch). This one was available by himself or in a set with Todo 360, end either one is really excellent if you can find them. Cad Bane's hat comes off, he has two blasters, and each and every joint seems to be perfectly hidden in his costume. This is one of the best figures from last year, so get one when you see one. Nintendo Tetris - A New Way to Hold The Controller
|
Via Kotaku: NES Tetris Players Call It 'Rolling,' And They're Setting New World Records. It's going to make you feel old - you tap the bottom of the controller to get more precise, quick taps on competitive games. Will I be doing this? Probably not. But you should see it, it's crazy.

Review: Burger King Super Powers Superman Cup Holder Figure
|
Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
Old, and not from Kenner! The Burger King Super Powers Superman Cup Holder Figure is a figural mug inspired by a popular action figure line, that has no articulation and was basically free. So I could get one. So read on, and come back tomorrow for more!

Star Wars Review: Battle Droid (2021, The Vintage Collection)
|
Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Battle Droid (2021, The Vintage Collection). This one looks a lot like a figure from 10 years ago with more printed silver scuffing, but there's so much of it that it almost looks like a pearlescent sheen. It's still a good mold, minus the fact that it will need support above the waist if you plan for a long-term display. Read the whole review.
