Possible Pop! Vinyl Pricing Error at Target
|
Odd but true: Target stores are resetting, but their pricing is messed up. Funko Pop! Vinyl Marvel Hulk and Iron Man ring up at obscenely low prices, I've seen them for as little as $0.74 but no higher than $1.48. Meanwhile, Spider-Man, Captain America, and Wolverine are each erroneously marked up to $14.99.
This sort of error isn't unprecedented-- who could forget the great Transformers Titanium Series mix-up of 2006, where the basic Robot Masters and deluxe Cybertron Heroes figure pricing was switched to $14.99 and $4.99 nationwide, respectively? Oh, good times.

Mattel Matty Subscriptions Extended, Other News Blurbs
|
Despite a lot of positive buzz, it seems that Mattycollector.com has extended the window for subscriptions on its 4 product lines through August 14. According to the site, the DC Universe subscription is going to require a minimum amount of sign-ups to go forward and they're only about 30% of the way there. It's an opportunity for you to put your money where your mouth is! Most exciting was the not-so-subtle hint that Dana will be added to the Ghostbusters line, which is a great addition after a lot of retreading the same character ground so far. This kind of action figure distribution is something fans have requested for years, so if you want it to continue or to see other companies try this model, you know the drill.
Mattel lost Elliot Handler, one of its founders, recently. MattyCollector.com has an article on the man and his legacy.
Finally, this Bloomberg headline says it all: Mattel Told to Pay MGA $85 Million Punitive Damages in Bratz Doll Dispute.

Transformers Botcon Toys Available, Third-Party Filler News
|
Since FullMetalHero passworded the pics, we'll link to TFW's Butcher HeadRobots Upgrade Gallery, which has a new Headmaster unit and a knife for your Universe Onslaught toy.
The Transformers Collector's Club Store has most of the Botcon 2011 toys in stock now, including a bagged "boxed set," the Autotroopers, and all the add-ons. The easiest way to find these in the shop is to search on the number "2011."
Also, Toys R Us is putting out the Cyberverse Cybertronian Warriors Pack for $39.99 a pop-- which stings a little! The set includes 1 "commander"-class toy, 2 "legion"-class toys, and 1 vehicle-- at normal prices, about $34 or lower individually. The set includes redecoes of the Bumblebee Mobile Bunker, Ironhide, Crankcase, and Barricade.

Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting non-Star Wars Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
We are not fans of Elvis, but we do understand the need for musical heroes! The NECA Iggy Pop Action Figure exists, and that alone is enough to astonish and amaze. Kudos to NECA for giving one of the 20th Century's finest his due, and while we'll likely never see Captain Beefheart or Frank Zappa, I can say I'm stuper-stoked that Iggy Pop is standing on my desk next to a glass Stooges tumbler and a little vinyl Batman. A Transformers News Dump
|
First up: Fun Publications posted tons of unreleased art from its G.I. Joe and Transformers clubs, although what's really interesting is what they removed. Concepts for a First Aid (Cybertron Red Alert) toy plus a swell Fangry (Beast Changer) no longer appear on the page, but not to worry-- they were mirrored by The Allspark.com.
Supposedly shipping any day now, you don't need another Autobot Guzzle gallery but HK-tF posted one and I want to show it o you anyway. Note the C-313 on the back, and bonus points if you catch the meaning before someone explains it to you.

Famed Sci-Fi Illustrator Burce Jensen Does Outer Space Men Concept Heads
|
It was fun to see Mel Birnkrant's new heads. It was a delight to see Matt Doughty's nifty new creations. But now you can see sci-fi cover painter Bruce Jenson's take on these guys! From Outer Space Men News:
"An amazing talent (and book cover illustrator) named Bruce Jensen has posted Outer Space Men custom head drawings so good, you'd swear they were real plastic. Or at least, I would. A post on his own blog highlights his latest entry, a modified crescent-inspired cyclops for the Xodiac body plus three other really nifty original designs for use on the painted bodies." Do take note: these are drawings, not real models or concepts for anything which would presently be slated for production, mass or otherwise.

October Toys Makes MUSCLE-Like Toys via Kickstarter
|
This is the future of toys, right here-- if you want it, you can get other people to fund it. Much like M.U.S.C.L.E. and Monster in my Pocket, the October Toys O.M.F.G. (Outlandish Mini Figure Guys) are go, after being "funded" by the program a few weeks ago. Five artists' figures are included in the project and sets started at a ten dollar pledge, but black plastic and other variations were available depending on how much you wanted to fund it.
The characters are Crawdad Kid, Multiskull, King Castor, Phantom Outhouse, and Stroll. These will be reviewed when our samples show up, which I don't believe an ETA has been given for as of yet.

Did you know? Europe got new Monster in my Pocket Recently
|
Did you know MEG had a few dozen new Monster in my Pocket figure line, which has not made it to the USA? It's true! They're fully-painted and not quite as charming as the neon originals, but you can read all about them on the Toypedia Minifigures blog with pictures and all sorts of info. If you have lots of time to kill on dull Friday afternoon, this is good reading.
Also Kinnikuman (MUSCLE) continues to see toy production, but not as the single-color plastic sculptures you've come to love. The entire Little Rubber Guy toy genre seems to be a little sluggish but lovers of it can do what I did, get a fix on clearance Gormiti at the Toys R Us.
(And if anyone in the UK or overseas is sitting on clearance cheapo Monster in my Pocket stuff... let me know.)

TheAllspark.com posted new images of Generations Junkheap and Sky Shadow, plus the words "Last Wave of 2011" pretty much says what to expect from here on out.
Sky Shadow is a remolded Thunderwing, with a new head and chest piece. Junkheap is a revised Wreck-Gar, which you need to get just so you can have one riding the other one. Some other Dark of the Moon toys were also revealed in their posting, but let's face it-- those are the most exciting robots in disguise on deck for the rest of the year.

New Imaginext Dinosaurs Out, Kmart Exclusive Repaints Available
|
While you've no doubt seen (or heard) the new Imaginext Dinosaurs in stores now, the armored beasties are notable for having added armor and gadgets similar to the classic Dino-Riders toy line. As of this weekend, I spotted a Kmart-exclusive two-pack featuring repainted versions of the "Raptor" and "Pterodactyl" in a larger boxed set. I'm unable to provide you a picture at this time, but if you follow the line odds are you'll stumble on it soon.
Unlike older runs of the dinosaurs, these new ones do not seem to have penis-activated action features. (The levers for many of them were confined to between the rear legs. This is what you miss out on when you only go to the action figure aisles, people.)

He-Man 2012 Subscription Update
|
According to a post by ToyGuru (Scott), Masters of the Universe subscriptions are going forward but are at historic lows which means what? From the posting:
"...we will no longer be doing second runs of figures starting with Man-E-Faces."
"...our overall production is going to be a bit lower in 2012."
In short: if you don't subscribe, and you thought it was tough getting things before? It's going to get worse. Yesterday's monthly Matty sale hasn't sold through on anything yet-- although Man-E-Faces is nearing sold-out status. (Gygor, Megator, and Beast Man remain available.) So either Mattel overestimated, or fans are pretty satisfied with their collections-- which is a shame, as the 2012 slate seems to be the most insane pile of cool stuff given Fearless Photogg, club-exclusive Shadow Weaver, and an insane original design of a new dragon character are all on deck. (Sadly, two of those aren't included in the subscriptions.) Given that fans of numerous lines have asked for direct-to-consumer sales and subscriptions, it's good to know that, for the time being, it's still being supported and the business model appears to be working. The direct-to-consumer model does basically work (see: Onell Design, Sideshow.) Also notable:
"While in NO WAY is this message intended to be a 'you must buy the [subscription]!' post, in all fairness, consider this fair warning that the sub is your best way of guaranteeing all figures without a sell out and the ONLY way to ever get Shadow Weaver. (And hey don't forget about the awesome Preternia map!)"

New Doug Benson coming August 30, includes DVD of Benson Interruption TV Show
|
The great Doug Benson will be releasing a new album this month called Potty Mouth. He's been releasing about one album a year of fresh material in addition to his various podcast projects, and if you haven't heard his stuff we're all big fans here. ("Unbalanced Load" has a track called "The Hoover Dam Bit" which is basically required for every road trip mix tape you ever make from now until you die, which should be about 18 months.)
What's particularly interesting about this new CD is how they're aiming to fight piracy by also including a bonus DVD with all 6 "uncensored" (which we have confirmed as "unbleeped" and not "unbleeped and extended") episodes of the Comedy Central The Benson Interruption TV show. It's a good show which was far too short lived, and is required viewing for any of you who don't watch a lot of comedy and are not too easily put off by sharp, funny, and/or stoned people doing what they do best. The TV show alone is worth the price of entry, particularly if you haven't seen it. Online pre-orders place the set at $13, give or take.

New Andrew Jackson Jihad coming September
|
It turns out everybody's favorite Arizona-based folk-ish duo, plus or minus a dude or two, Andrew Jackson Jihad is releasing a new LP Knife Man in September on Asian Man records. Pre-order bundles include shirts, black vinyl LPs, CDs, MP3 codes, that sort of thing. Since I have friends that like the band and I'm a fan, I'm posting it here so they see it. You might like their stuff, too.

He-Man Comic-Con Mattypalooza Slides
|
The fine folks at He-Man.org posted shots of the Comic-Com He-Man panel with 2011 and 2012 figures. You may have seen some of these by now, but it's worth reviewing to see what you will (and more importantly, what you won't) get from the subscriptions. Some tip-top stuff in here, unfortunately the super-cool Draego-Man and Fearless Photogg are NOT included in the subscription for some reason.

Japan Getting Transformers Alternity Dai Atlas, Goldbug
|
RobotKingdom has posted images of Transfomers Alternity Dai Atlas and Goldbug, which is a redeco of Bumblebee. If you aren't familiar with Alternity toys, they're die-cast metal and roughly the size of a deluxe-- for about $60 a whack. So they're expensive.

New to download this week: Medal Of Honor Frontline and that's actually it. $14.99.
PSOne classics this week: Breath of Fire IV a $5.99 RPG. What a deal!
The hardware also received a price drop-- the 160GB PS3 will be down to $249.99 (down $50) while a 320GB model will be $299.99.

PSP: PSN Updates This Week
|
New PSP Minis this week include: Gamocracy One: Legend Of Robot, Dr. Maybee And The Adventures Of Scarygirl, and Omg-Z!. Each is $3.49-$3.99. There are no other full games.
A new PSP hardware revision is hitting Europe for 99 Euros, lacking wi-fi meaning you have to connect to your PC (not Mac) to purchase downloads. Or probably the PS3 as well. Expect it to be at or around US $99 if/when it hits the USA.

Glyaxian Xodiac Sneaking Out Early
|
I was lucky enough to get an advance one, and the forums are buzzing with preview figures sneaking out early! From Outer Space Men News:
"Word is getting out-- the Glyaxian Xodiac is approaching! I got a sample a few weeks ago (you may have seen him sprinkled in some pictures) and this thread on the Fantastic Exclusive Forums shows others have too! It's a fully-painted figure with clear ABS plastic accessories, so you can have clear gear on a clear Xodiac if you're so inclined." [ READ MORE ].

New Tom Waits Single Next Week?
|
This Pitchfork report states New Tom Waits Music on Tuesday?, and pulls from Tom Waits' (or his people's) camp and Amazon listings to say the track "Bad As Me" may well be available on the Amazon on August 23.
The official word is that Tom Waits will confirm this on his web site. Which probably means yes, because it would be a dick move (and funny) to have a statement saying to come back for yet another statement of "Nope!"
If you need something now, this Cookie Monster footage edited as a music video for "God's Away on Business" should knock you right on your tailbone. If you're a fan of pretty much any famous person with a voice that sounds like hot gravel, this is something you might need to see. If you're someone I know personally I insist you go see it.

Side Burn Was/Is In Stock at Transformers Club
|
Over at the Club Shop Side Burn was up for earlier on Wednesday, but the listing is now gone-- it's possible it was up early as an accident, but it's not up now, so it may have sold through. Assuming you were a member, it was listed at $32, which is a lot considering club membership (which includes shipping for the piece) was a mere $40. Lesson learned: join the club for the club toy.

Transformers Papercraft Optimus Trailer Released in Hong Kong Magazine
|
TheAllspark.com posted extremely hi-res scans of Milk Magazine's Free Papercraft Optimus Prime Trailer, designed to be compatible with the Dark of the Moon deluxe Optimus Prime-- a Wal-Mart exclusive in the USA. The punch-out thicker paper material can't be easily replicated with home printing equipment, but you can probably crank out a decent facsimile with those scans.
What a wonderful idea! I'd buy a magazine for that. In addition to the toy compatibility, they also designed it to be a desk accessory-- you can put pencils and office supplies in it. If a US toy magazine did papercraft playsets or accessories, I'd subscribe to it. No questions asked. (Missed opportunity, the late ToyFare.)

He-Man Filmation Figure Details Revealed
|
The fine folks at He-Man.org posted a Q&A with Filmation details which also confirmed that they have lengthened the line plan as a result of the new character infusion. No word on when or if this means Mekaneck will make the cut.
For those not in the know, a number of characters who a) appeared on the TV shows and b) did not receive an action figure in the 1980s were considered off-limits for whatever agreement Mattel had with the animation studio Filmation. This new deal opens the door to a ton of new opportunities, like Shadow Weaver (coming in 2012) or any of a number of villains-of-the-week like Evilseed. (Who, at press time, I don't believe has been confirmed or discussed with the toy-buying public.)

New Imaginext Dinosaurs Out, Mech + Pterosaur
|
In my hunts last week I saw the Imaginext Dinosaurs Doc and Exo Suit set, which repaints the existing smaller "mech" suit and adds a small pterosaur to the mix. Unlike the picture, the sample I saw had the opening canopy section completely vac-metal-- not black and vac-metal silver, but totally silver with a couple of painted details. (It was scuffed, otherwise I'd have bought it.) It ships in the same case as the Ankylosaurus and Raptor sets. Good hunting! A lot of new items are showing up now, particularly at Kmart and Target due to their resets.
If that weren't enough, Toys R Us has all Imaginext buy 1 get 1 50% off this week-- and many locations do carry the new stuff. Not the mech suit, mind you, but if you wanted the Triceratops and something else, now might be a good time to do it.

New Tom Waits CD coming October 25
|
In a move to excite dads as much as your best friends, a short video confirms Tom Waits will release a new album"Bad As Me" on October 25 in addition to a single now available online. The short video references this badly-kept secret (spoiled by"a few bad apples") and let's face it, if you're a fan, you probably already saw it by now. If not, go ahead and take a look.
Waits' site lists 13 tracks, but some news outlets show 16 which means-- you guessed it-- a deluxe version of Bad As Me is coming. It costs a few bucks more and includes a second disc with the bonus tracks... and according to the official store, a"digital download" which seems pretty ridiculous given iTunes should be able to rip the discs right there. Unless they know something we don't. ...which would be bad.

Tarantula Planet Series 2 Out Now
|
File under "bet you didn't know or care this existed." At Toy Fair last year, one of the most bizarre lines I've ever seen was Uncle Milton's Tarantula Planet, series 2 of which is hitting stores now. They're sound-activated "racing" tarantulas, basically one design given numerous personalities and costumes. Ocho Loco the Mexican Wrestler is pictured, and it just gets goofier from there: a Terminator (the name on the site is different than at Toys R Us), a soccer player (complete with socks), and an "alien" tarantula just hit stores now. Previously available items (which were sold and removed from Target this year) include a pirate, a punk, a hot rod, and a soldier.
Be sure to take note of it, this is one of those weirdo toy lines that future nostalgists are going to go nuts for. Mark my words, people of 2026.

New Game for the Xbox 360 Live Arcade Released
|
Xbox 360 owners, it's time to look into Street Fighter III: Online Edition, a $15/1,200 points update of the fighter that's not II or IV. It's still popular and now it's online! The verbose Microsoft says:
"Street Fighter III: Third Strike Online Edition, one of the most revered, deep, and sophisticated fighting games of all time, now takes the battle online. Fighting game fans new and old owe it to themselves to experience this mastery of 2D fighting. Throw down with enhanced HD-filtered graphics, arcade-perfect gameplay, GGPO seamless multiplayer, YouTube replay sharing, new art, and more. It's time you realized it's the third strike that counts. GGPO-Enabled Online Play: SFIII will feature pixel-perfect arcade play online, with a matching system and leaderboards. Unchanged Arcade Gameplay: Utmost care was taken to maintain an arcade perfect experience and not to change the deep gameplay system. Upgraded Visuals: Players can customize their viewing experience with new art, UI, and hand-tuned HD Filtering options. YouTube Replay Sharing: Players will be able to watch local and global match replays in-game, and upload replays directly to YouTube to share with the rest of the world."
Also new is Crazy Machine Elements, a $10/800-point puzzler, and Hole In The Wall, a Kinect-based game that's a lot like those Human Tetris videos you see on YouTube. Now that's a great idea! It's also $10/800 points.

Playmates Family Guy Figures Hitting Now
|
Hitting Toys "R" Us stores now is the new Playmates Toys Family Guy action figure line, and each figure is about $10.
The line owes everything to Playmates' The Simpsons line, also known as "World of Springfield." I covered this line in some detail for the first few years, but here's the short of it: figures with limited articulation, decent animated likenesses, and a transistor in their feet to activate phrases on larger talking playsets. The key difference this time is that the figures have the same limited articulation, but cost about twice as much as in 2000.

Did you know? There's a Third 16-bit Crush Pinball Game
|
Did you know Naxat made a Super (Famicom) NES pinball game called Jaki Crush, the third in the series which spawned Alien Crush and Devil's Crush? It's true. Check out a video of the rarely-seen Super Famicom game in action. It's an impressive spectacle with pretty ghoulish graphics based on Japanese mythology.
It's also mostly in English so it'd make a nice Virtual Console game on the Wii, don't you think?

Nintendo Wii Downloads This Week
|
This week's WiiWare offering is nothing. Usually this goes the other way around.
The Virtual Console has The Ignition Factor, a Super NES game from Jaleco, for $8 or 800 points. I've never heard of it before today.

Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting non-Star Wars Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
The redder, the better! The Four Horsemen Outer Space Men Alpha Phase Inferno the Flame Man of Mercury SDCC Exclusive was the very first take on the character in the action figure line, so now he's hard to get and kind of expensive. So read on, read our Star Wars one too, and come back soon for more!

Transformers Unicron Hit Amazon, Sells Out, Comes Back, etc.
|
Amazon.com posted its exclusive Transformers Generations Unicron with Kranix, designed to more closely match the character in the original movie. It has sold out, come back into stock, and sold out several times. It's a safe bet that if it is "sold out" now it is not, in fact, sold out-- Hasbro's runs are huge and even the most dedicated fans can't make a $60 item vanish overnight unless Hasbro cut the run. I'm going to guess a) there are more and b) they will show up at Ross/TJ Maxx/etc. in 2012 if it doesn't come back in stock repeatedly through the upcoming season.
Also, I finally found Guzzle (the Dark of the Moon Cyberverse toy) after numerous sightings of his case mate, Dark Sentinel Prime. Wal-Mart, people.

Glyos News A-Plenty
|
The new drop at Onell Design over the weekend was a huge hit, with several items selling out in under 6 hours. (The Rig? Gone. Xodiac? Gone. Gold Axis joints? Bon Voyage.) A very interesting Onell Design Thank You Post added a ton of shots of sketches and models of things which are either upcoming products, concepts, or just teases-- including the little guy in the picture. What is it? When will we see it? Who knows?
Also notable: Onell Teases Transformers-Ish Future Release in New Drop, Unproduced Glyos Volkirun Wing Rig Prototype, and if you missed it, Four Horsemen Redesign of Pheyden A-Coming?
You can catch up on all the weekend festivities at The Glyos News Dump and of course the real Glyos site, Onell Design.

New Garage Kit for Erector's Head You Won't Buy
|
The next Renderform project is a head to convert Solar Storm Grappel into Erector, a Micromaster which became the "joke character" for the Transformers Hall of Fame at Botcon.
Obviously unauthorized, the maker is also making heads for Goldbug, Vortex, and new weapons for other figures. (While I try to keep the unauthorized toys to a minimum... I've got no real problem with new heads.)
