New EP from Freezepop
|
Via Freezepop: The Ghost Rejoins the Living (The Maxi-Single).
It has a bunch of remixes on it, and you probably got a link to download it free if you supported their Kickstarter. As with everything they do, it's great. If you didn't get it with the Kickstarter, you can get it on Bandcamp for five bucks. At this time it's a digital-only release.

Review: Playmobil 70634 Back to the Future Part II Hoverboard Chase
|
Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
Hoverboards! The Playmobil 70634 Back to the Future Part II Hoverboard Chase is currently the only set specifically designed from the second film - I hope there will be more! You get Doc, Marty, Griff, a Future Police Officer, a pond, signs, Mr. Fusion upgrade parts, and a bunch of other bits. It's $35 but pretty good overall - there's more in the Advent Calendar boxes, but it's still excellent. So read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!

2022 Looking Thin for Movies
November 11, 2021 |
Review: Playmobil 70548 Star Trek U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 Playset
|
Something new every day-- unless it's old! Our exciting Figure of the Day continues for you lucky people! Is there anything we won't cover in this column? Probably not!
The biggest Playmobil set yet! The Playmobil 70548 Star Trek U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 Playset is seemingly a de facto online exclusive, meaning you can probably get one easily while supplies last. At this price I don't assume it'll be produced forever, and it's a nice set that walks a line between fancy prop replica and preschool toy/dollhouse. It has no action features, but there are a lot of electronic components to give you lights and sounds. If you have the scratch, it's one of the coolest things any Playmobil or sci-fi fan can buy this year. So read on, and come back tomorrow for more fun!

Movie Delay Dally
|
Via Deadline: ÔTransformers: Rise Of The BeastsÕ Pushed A Year; New ÔStar TrekÕ Movie To Beam Up Over Christmas 2023. For those keeping track, the Transformers film was set for 2022, and the Matt Shakman-helmed Trek had no specific date.
If you haven't been keeping track, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron's production got pushed back (the movie is set to hit in 2023, unless it moves,) the untitled Indiana Jones sequel was pushed to at least 2023, Marvels got pushed into 2023, and I have no doubt I'm forgetting a few. A lot of stuff is getting pushed back, I assume due to the fact that box office numbers are in the toilet and nobody wants to lose hundreds of billions of dollars on a film release before there's some certainty as to when COVID will let up enough for people to regularly go to the movies again. In 2020, the number of films released in the USA was cut from 911 to 455, and the total box office went from $11.3 billion to $2.1 billion. Movies are effectively an investment, and releasing anything now - and possibly next year - will not yield much of a return.
Also the 2022 Marvel slate has been changed a lot too, with a lot of stuff getting pushed back a couple of months next year. With the toys, food tie-ins, and everything else, I assume they're all going to be out as scheduled - but hey, they can delay things a year or more now.

Playmobil to Reissue Vintage Victorian Dollhouse Line
|
Via AMClicks: Tema: Nuevo Cat‡logo Playmobil Plus 2022. Shown: new Circus sets and, if I understand correctly, direct-to-consumer exclusive reissues of the Victorian dollhouse sets that were popular and expensive in the late 1980s through the early 2000s. Even at the time, these were premium-priced collectibles - goodness knows what they'll cost now that we're in a collecting bubble.
To put it mildly, this set of reissues is a Big Deal. Please look forward to it.
I remember the original dollhouse - set 5300 - being quite expensive, possibly $180-$200 at a local Hobby Bench shop back then. Sealed box sets (or open/complete) go for $800 or more these days, and I assume the reissues of these will also be $200-$300 since there's a lot of collector interest and old people with jobs who can afford it. (No I don't have this one.) A scan of an old catalog shows the original prices from 30 years ago, and it'll probably be at least that expensive for the reissue. When the piano set was reissued in 2017, it was $11.99 - a full dollar less than what it sold for originally.
These sets seemed more adult-driven back then, with lots of historical weirdness like fishmongers in the pink boxes - and, of course, the shoeless person you see at the top of this very page. (Neither are included in the reissues.) The big house is one of the Playmobil holy grails, and the smaller sets are packed with what amounts to some of the niftier "dollhouse furniture" you can get in a toy line that's part doll, part action figure, and once in a while, part traditional toy.
Unless you have old vintage ones to sell, in which case, better get on that. Playmobil keeps a lot of its parts in circulation for a very long time. Tooling for a 1989 Grandfather Clock seen in the reissues was also in last year's Scooby Doo Mystery Mansion, and while it appears there will be some changes in some of the new sets it's mostly going to be recolors of the original releases.

Retro Review: Playmobil 6527 Pianist with Piano
|
If this looks familiar, it should! We reviewed this 2017 rerelease almost four years ago, and with the other Victorian sets getting reissued it's worth looking at again.
If you missed this one, it's being blown out on Playmobil.us for $5.24 right now - an absolute bargain.
A reissue of a tiny piano and a 3-inch pianist! The Playmobil Pianist with Piano has a revised music sheet and some changes to the piano paint job, so you can tell it's different from the one from nearly 30 years ago. So read it again!

Via the Star Wars Galactic Hunter Figure of the Day Blog: Q9-0 (Zero, The Black Series) (The Black Series). It's a neat robot, with great detail and you've got a ghost of a chance of finding the wave in stores. The grey is a little more "plastic" than "metal" in appearance, but do remember, it is a plastic figure. The painted dirt and wires are a nice touch. Read the whole review.

Extra-Large Pac-Man Joystick
|
Via Arcade 1-Up (and thank you Shaun): PAC-MANª Giant Joystick Plug and Play. It's a really big joystick you plug in your TV. How big? 36-inches. There's a foot pedal on it and some full-size buttons - it's more than a little ridiculous, but also probably falls under the license for game machines that no doubt include stipulations for size.
QVC sells it in the USA - and is sold out - but the $100ish device includes Pac-Man, Pac-Mania, New Rally-X, Galaga, Galaga 88, Dig Dug, Super Xevious, Rolling Thunder, Dragon Spirit, and Mappy if you can get it. It's not a bad selection, although I have no idea how good that interface is for actual playing. As far as I know it's the biggest mass-produced consumer-sized joystick - and it connects via HDMI, a rarity in the plug and play space - but maybe there's a bigger one.
