New NES Game Dumped - Days of Thunder

NintendoNew StuffVia the Video Game History Foundation: Reconstructing a lost NES game from 30-year-old source code disks yielded a reveal of an unreleased Days of Thunder from Mindscape and programmer Chris Oberth. There was another version - this is not it.

A limited edition cartridge is being sold for $70 but no details are present - literally no text of any kind appears on the store other than the name of the product. There's no way to know if it's in-stock or a pre-order, or if it's CIB or just a cartridge, or what at press time.

If you don't know why you should care, NES fiend John Riggs put together a video that explains it all a bit better.

Atari VCS 3030 Allegedy Shipping

AtariAtariVia Engadget: The first Atari VCS units should be ready by mid-June. Despite no confirmed software being available, 500ish units are supposedly coming from the factory soon - which leaves 11,000 other supporters waiting. Will it be any good? Will it be a fun diversion as microconsoles generally are? Heck if I know.

Game Gear Micro - Sega's Revenge?

SegaBlackVia Sega: Game Gear Micro. Finally, a system too small to play as an adult!

Kotaku had more details - it's launching in Japan on June 10, it's $45, it comes in 4 colors, and there's no word on if it has a TV out or how many games come on it.

For those of you who are also old, it may remind you of the Atari Lynx' out of scale debut on the cover of Video Games & Computer Entertainment in 1989. I believe I have this issue in a box still.

Game Gear Micro - 4 Flavors, 4 Games Each

SegaSmollVia Sega: Game Gear Micro game details. Four games are split between four different $45 micro-handhelds. They are small.

Each one has at least one puzzle game, with many having one (or more) adventure/action RPG-style games. Some even have Sonic, from before it got weird. It's all in Japanese for now, so pick your purchases carefully - hopefully we'll see something for the US, but there's no visible TV out and these teeny tiny consoles, while cute, are probably not going to be a ton of fun with your old, failing eyes.

154 JC Penney Stores Closing

ToysTrophyVia CNBC: JC Penney announces 154 stores set to close this summer. HereÕs a map. In Phoenix, the Christown Spectrum location has closing - which has been operational on and off since before World War II. (Its original building was replaced by a Costco, but JC Penney later reopened in another part of the mall.)

The closing sales begin June 12. It's a shame, as it's one of few places in malls that still had toys - I met their toy buyer on a few business trips over the last few years.

More Lanard Aliens Coming

AlienComing?Via Smyths, a UK toy store: Alien -Dx L/S Alien Queen Ultra Set!

It is unknown if this will have a US release. The Queen now has electronic hissing sounds, the human scientist may be different, and the dogburster seems to be orange this time. The egg, facehugger, and green warrior seem the same as previous releases. It's also significantly more expensive than previous sets - in the UK the Queen was £25 with the smaller sets at about £13-£16. This is effectively a Ä40ish worth of stuff, plus or minus a couple of bucks, when compared to other sets. If it comes to the USA I would gamble it's $35.

New NES Game Delayed - Jay & Silent Bob's Mall Brawl

NintendoRoadhouseVia Limited Run Games: Jay & Silent Bob Limited Run - ETA was an email we got yesterday. It reads as follows:

"Thank you for your patience as we get ready to ship Jay & Silent Bob: Mall Brawl. We know it has been a while, so we wanted to write a general update.

"As some of you may know, the NES carts were hit with production delays that initially extended our general 2-4 month ETA. Shortly after, the world shut down in response to COVID-19. We're happy to say that the NES carts have been produced and are en route to our office via boat from China!

"Our final shipping estimate is July this year. To make up for the long wait, we will be providing Steam keys at no additional cost. Please keep an eye on your inbox for this key, and (quite soon) tracking information from us!"

The Switch version came out a few weeks ago, so if you pre-ordered the cartridge you're probably going to be last. And you paid more. But you got an NES game, in theory, coming. Reviews are middling but it's also meant to be a throwback to the likes of Double Dragon.

New 8-Bit Pac-Man CE and Gaplus Actually Real New NES Games

NintendoEven More NintendoVia forums: NAMCO MUSEUM ARCHIVES Vol 1 has a Pac-Man Championship Edition demake by retro gaming giants M2, and it turns out it's actually a real NES game. I won't direct anyone to the archive on the internet that host the files for reasons, but sure enough someone poked around in there and it's a real NES file that runs on emulators (and presumably, could be sold on a cartridge for the olds out there.) The same is true of Gaplus, a less-heralded demake of which can be found on NAMCO MUSEUM ARCHIVES Vol 2. It's my sincere hope Limited Run Games or another studio picks these up for release on actual NES cartridges. The Pac-Man CE game seems to be taken from a fan-made game that made the rounds about 10 years ago, with some new music and other changes - but it's hard to confirm this.

Each new game appears to be smaller than Super Mario Bros. 3.

New game development for NES isn't rare, but it's uncommon from big game publishers. Konami and Majesco put out a plug-and-play game with some NES ports on its Nintendo-on-a-chip hardware in 2004. It also included all-new versions of Frogger, Scramble, and Time Pilot - which to my knowledge have never been dumped as ROMs or released outside this unit. Nintendo put out a special hack of Donkey Kong Original Edition as a Europe-only Wii pack-in thing in the UK with the missing NES Cement/Pie factory stage... which has been ripped. It's also on the 3DS as a digital-only Club Nintendo reward that we all missed.

For those of you just joining us, NES development has been slow but steady on Kickstarter and other portals. Games like Micro Mages and Nebs and Debs give you a great idea of where NES development can go within the confines of the original limitations of game hardware, showing just how much more you could've got out of the grey box had the Super NES and Genesis not ended its time in the monopolistic spotlight so soon. With slightly larger small publishers like Limited Run Games putting out Star Wars series titles as well as originals like Galf and Jay & Silent Bob's Mall Brawl, hopefully someone will do some more and be to 80s game kids what Rhino Records was to rock & roll.

If you want to go buy an NES ROM that you can do whatever you want with, might I recommend the cheap and fun Berzerk from Parisoft? It's a fan-made adaptation of Stern's arcade game complete with robot voices. It's neat - you might have it on an old console like Atari VCS or Vectrex. A cartridge doesn't exist so go get the $2 ROM.

Transformers Gets "Marvel Legends" with R.E.D.

TransformersMegatronVia IGN: Transformers Generation Selects Super Megatron. I have no information other than what I'm reading here, which is that these seem to be Pulse and Walmart exclusives.

Pre-orders start Friday for $19.99 a pop for Optimus and Megatron. They are due in September. If there are additional characters, they didn't say.

Figures like these have been whispered about for over a decade - and we've seen Japanese import figures do something like this for collectors. There's a question of how deep it can go, but there's a seemingly endless appetite for G1 Optimus Prime products and while Megatron is a bit slower, he's not unpopular. If I can find these first two, I'll pick them up to give them a try, and then hope they do some of the weirder comic designs in this format some day.

New Genesis/Mega Drive Game: Journey to Oblivion

SegaDCVia Mega Studios: Journey to Oblivion! It seems to be a work-in-progress from Brazil.

A crowdfunded campaign is promised later, but they're selling an early version of the ROM now for your emulators, Everdrives, Raspberry Pis, jailbroken FPGA systems, and so on. It's a shooter and it looks like it has some pretty weird boss monsters with elements that are consistent with your preconceived notions of Brazil's entertainment on television. I can't find a lot of information about it and I've not seen it before - but it's really fun and like Pac-Man Championship Edition, and coin-op games of old, lets you play for 2 or 5 minutes in a "time attack" mode before you're done. If your lives or the timer run out, that's it, you start over - which is kind of welcome if you've got other things to do today. I'd recommend giving it a shot. While nowhere near as deep as a Dragon Spirit or Life Force, it's a fun game that you can enjoy in a couple of minutes. Which, if you ask me, is perfectly fine now that NES games can be downloaded for free or a couple of bucks rather than having to buy them for $45 like in the 1990s.
