LEGO and Toys R Us Bricktober Promotion has Classic Figures

LEGONinjaOur pals at Toys R Us wrote us to let us know about their third annual Bricktober promotion, which started yesterday. Each week, there's a promotional "magnet" which is confirmed to be glued down (thanks Jason!) Here's the menu from the press release:

From Sunday, October 2 to Saturday, October 8, customers will discover the Ninja Princess, first introduced in the Ninja series that ran from 1998 to 2000. Originally introduced in 1999, this feisty figure was also included in the 2010 Vintage Minifigure Collection Volume 5.
From Sunday, October 9 to Saturday, October 15, LEGO fans can find Rob N. Hood, leader of the Forestmen faction of the Castle theme. First released in 1990, Rob N. Hood led a merry band of skilled archers who enjoyed food and good times.
From Sunday, October 16 to Saturday, October 22, collectors can pick up a rerelease of one of the original LEGO minifigures - the classic Knight. This medieval minifigure first appeared in the 1978 Castle series.
From Sunday, October 23 to Saturday, October 29, LEGO collectors can rediscover the Black Classic Spaceman. Originally issued in 1984, this astronaut was the least commonly used version of the space-faring minifigure, only appearing in 9 LEGO sets between 1984 and 1986.

Each figure is "free" with a $20 purchase of LEGO in the stores. And presumably, pictures will be in the newspaper circulars every week.

Hasbro Reveals (Presumably) Full NYCC Slate to USA Today

New York Comic ConMaximum CarnageThis USA Today article runs down Hasbro's New York Comic Con Exclusives which are entirely repaints and they're actually not bad.

Maximum Carnage Marvel Mini Muggs bring you a ton of characters from that 1990s comic event, including J. Jonah Jameson. Transformers Cuponk is a game which appeals mostly to teenish boys, but you might want it anyway. The other items-- a Bumblebee Nerf gun and a repaint Compound Hulk figure-- were shown previously.

Mad Matty Monday - Blind Bag Discount Bundles

Matty CollectorHe's CrazyThe Mad Matty Monday special offer starts today. There are three bundles, based on Ghostbusters, DC Universe, and Masters of the Universe and it boasts a minimum of 3 figures with a value of $60. I'd actually jump on this if they offered a list of what you might get because odds are I've already got most of the He-Man guys, but I missed a few and wouldn't mind trying my hand if I thought there was a chance I might get something new (to me).

Have any of you tried this the last time they did it? What did you get?

LEGO Doing New Brick Separator

LEGONinjaAs a youngster, when I finally got a LEGO Brick Separator (mail order, $1, it was a long time ago) it made my fingernails and teeth were made extremely happy. They're redesigning the tool and The Brothers Brick has a shot of the new Brick Separator which even includes a piece to remove Technic elements.

No price is given, but in the past the older brick separators were sold by mail for a buck or two and also put in a few (very few) brick buckets.

NECA gets E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial

ToysPhone HomeThe people at NECA have confirmed the acquisition of the E.T. license for toys, figures, plush, bobble heads, and other goodies-- which probably means a Blu-Ray push is coming sooner than later. Product starts in March 2012 and hopefully will be awesome. Previous licensors have found it a difficult license to market, although NECA usually has the good sense to pick only the most popular (read: not human) characters from creature features while marketing squarely at adults rather than a wide age group.

Congratulations to NECA and good luck with this character! A high-grade figure may be just what the doctor ordered-- especially if it's 3 3/4-inch scale.

That 70s Show Blu-Ray Coming

Blu-RayBlueThe TV site TVShowsOnDVD.com has confirmation of That 70s Show on Blu-Ray soon. The claims-- that the show was shot on film, in widescreen-- seem unlikely but arguably welcome. Few sitcoms, particularly catalog titles, get Blu-Ray releases so this could mean good things for TV on the format in general. That, or it's going to be disappointing. One of those.

Hasbro NYCC Exclusives Available Wednesday Morning

TransformersPhone HomeHasbroToyShop.com will be selling the 5 NYCC exclusives on their web site early Wednesday morning. If you like prepaints and repaints, this is the day for you to get excited.

The Transformers Prime boxed set and Compound Hulk are arguably the most interesting items, but it's worth noting that the entire lot is basically repaints. Prime Bumblebee is a gorgeous vehicle with an annoying transformation and a robot mode I would say is, at best, un-fun. Arcee has an involved and amazingly interesting transformation, and my guess is I'll be referring to the instructions for a while. On my sample, the leg keeps popping off. Other items include a Bumblebee Nerf Blaster which is, well, neat plus a Transformers Cuponk Set with wonderfully fun G1 graphics and they're joined by Marvel Spider-Man Maximum Carnage Mini Muggs, which is neat if you're a fan of that kind of toy. J. Jonah Jameson as a Mighty Muggs-style character is hard to resist, and Venom has two faces-- masked, and partially masked.

Video GamesR-TypeDo you know why all those old PC ports of classic arcade games looked bad? Timing! The hardware is fine, but nobody had time to refine them according to 8-bit remakes fix the past on BoingBoing, a fascinating (and illustrated) look at what those old computers can do if given a few extra days of loving care.

From the article: "For example, pictured above is the player's craft from 1980s classic shooter R-Type. At [top], the original arcade incarnation is colorful and detailed; at center, a contemporary home version is barely recognizable as the same thing. At [the bottom], however, a more faithful modern remake, crafted on the same model of home computer, recovers much that was lost."

Also up for the Nintendo 3DS: Double Dragon, a $4 port of a GameBoy port of the fighting game. And not the NES port. Why? I don't know. Some Dreamworks Cartoons were also added for download as TV on demand, more or less.

October 2011 Hasbro Q&A; Club Grunt Revealed

G.I. JoeThe FutureWe were afforded the opportunity to ask Hasbro three questions, and they sent back two answers. Check out this month's update which covers things which will make you angry, particularly as they confirm a figure has been released which all evidence points to the contrary.

Also, take a look at their previous update which has been contradicted by some exclusives which were announced at NYCC last weekend. (Although I suppose you could say they weren't "set up" at that stage in question #1.)

GruntThe G.I. Joe Club revealed Grunt as part of their subscription figure service. Interestingly, this means 5 for 5 figures correspond with a "rumor" list from August with Iron Klaw and some other exciting ideas like Big Boa. Let's hope it's true!

Windcharger, Wipe Out coming to Transformers United

TransformersBlueThe Fan site Tformers.com has new pictures of Japanese Windcharger and redeco Wipe Oout which will be coming to Japan soon. The rubsign sticker has been replaced by an Autobot tampo, and Wipe Out makes sure the obligatory evil repaint is introduced immediately. Too bad they aren't coming out over here! The site also has Thunderwing, which, honestly, doesn't look a heck of a lot better than the cheaper US release.

G.I. JoeIs This News? The G.I. Joe Club revealed its subscription mailer boxes for some reason. No pricing exists as of yet, and the entire list of figures hasn't been officially released, but I guess at least you know they're thinking about packaging.

Xbox Live ArcadeWar of the WorldsXbox 360 owners, it's time to look into War of the Worlds, a $10/800 point 2D reimagining of the H.G. Wells novel, just in time for Halloween. Microsoft says:

LEGO Dinosaurs Coming Back in 2012

LEGOR-TypeBrickshelf has a gallery showing LEGO 2012 Dino Toys, which is (by my count) at least the fourth series of LEGO Dinosaurs over the past decade and change.

The dinosaur designs are a huge improvement over recent releases from the company, and are well worth the look. Coincidentally, Playmobil will be introducing new and reissued dinosaurs in 2012 in the German market.

Man or Astro-Man? Releases Another Free Concert via MP3

MusicNew Old MusicHate paying for things? Southern Shelter posted a Man or Astro-Man? Concert from Athens Popfest at the 40 Watt from a couple of weeks ago. The setlist is a lot like their other recent concerts-- a best-of from their first releases through Technetium-- but the buzz on the street is that there are new songs sitting somewhere being recorded.

If you've never heard the space-themed surf act, now is as good of a time as any. It includes "9 Volt" and "A Simple Text File," the latter of which was played on a dot matrix printer. You know, like Grandpa uses.
