Star Wars Figure of the Day Updated
|
Figure of the Day has updated once again! The daily feature on figures you might have but might not-- either way, here's what you've been missing! Spanning from the original Power of the Force series of 1995 to the latest of The Legacy Collection, it's almost like a history lesson!
Today we look at the Kit Fisto figure released earlier this year in the cartoon line. He's very thin, and very green. Go to Figure of the Day for the next update, with the latest installment in our ongoing series!
Also, the Toys "R" Us exclusive TIE Interceptor-- which we found-- and Republic Gunship (Crumb Bomber)-- which we didn't-- are showing up for $50 and $70, respectively. While impressive, the price increase puts these into a secondary market price right off the bat, which means a decrease is probably to be expected. The Interceptor is totally cool though. Happy hunting!

Three New Games for the Xbox 360 Live Arcade Released
|
Xbox 360 owners have a trio of new games to grab this week. They are:
- Bust-A-Move Live, an update of a genuine arcade classic also known as Puzzle Bobble. It's 800 points/$10.
- The oddly named Football Genius is actually soccer trivia. It's also 800 points/$10.
- Also $10/800 is Military Madness: Nectaris, an update of a TurboGrafx 16 military strategy game.

New Toys "R" Us G.I. Joe Movie Exclusives Hitting
|
Hey Joe fans, HissTank.com is reporting the Toys "R" Us exclusive Snow Serpent and Bench Press figures are hitting now. As they're basically cobbled together little golems of 25th Anniversary parts, they pair may be of interest to a wider audience. Happy hunting!

Transformers Universe Exclusives About to Hit
|
Soon to be released in stores (and in a Wal-Mart circular), these $30 exclusives of Hardhead, Powerglide, and Skyfall are now up on Wal-Mart's site-- but are out of stock. Looks like it's time to start hunting! Of particular interest is Powerglide, as he appears in colors similar to the Japanese release, which were modeled after the original cartoon series.

PSP: PSN Updates This Week, PSP Go Released
|
This week's downloadable PSP titles are actually too many to list. Numerous catalog titles were put up with the release of the PSPGo, but notable new entries include Gran Turismo (disc-based or downloadable) for about $40. Also exciting is Thexder Neo, a remake of a 1986 PC shooter sold in the USA by Sierra On-Line, for a mere $9.99. Dozens of other games were added, check your Playstation Store for more.
PSPMinis include: Alien Havoc, Tetris, Hero of Sparta, Brainpipe, Fieldrunners, Sudoku, and Funky Punch. They cost between $5 and $10.
PSOne releases include: Jumping Flash! 2, Um Jammer Lammy, Nuclear Strike, and Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko. Each is $5.99.
Also, the very expensive PSPGo was released this week. The new portable has an innovative flip-out screen, but cannot use any existing PSP peripherals, nor can it use any UMD disc-based media-- it's download-only. The $250 console has a bit of an uphill battle.

Star Wars Q&A Galore, Figure of the Day Updated at Galactic Hunter
|
Galactic Hunter has posted a new Q&A column this week! Be sure to click through and read up on the latest!
Figure of the Day has updated once again! The daily feature on figures you might have but might not-- either way, here's what you've been missing! Spanning from the original Power of the Force series of 1995 to the latest of The Legacy Collection, it's almost like a history lesson! Today: Commander Gree, the one from 2008 with sculpted suspenders, a backpack, a helmet, and other special features. Is it a worthy upgrade? Go to Figure of the Day to find out!
Special Bonus Feature: Hasbro (Mot Us) Answered Some Star Wars Questions
As you may or may not know, Hasbro does a number of Q&A sessions with its brands, and we participated in the Star Wars one. Hasbro's answers will be italicized for your increased comprehension difficulty. (Again: we asked, Hasbro answered, in case there was confusion.)
1. In your most recent Q&A you highlighted there will be fewer slots to release Rebel Pilot figures in the line going forward. Giving the modular nature of the figures, have you considered releasing a figure with an extra head and helmet as accessories, allowing the consumer to effectively choose which character(s) it will be? This might help collectors absorb more of the same SKU while allowing Hasbro to get more figures out with fewer in-line variations. An alternate head would definitely encourage us to buy more of the same figure!
A1. While we have released alternate heads with figures before, it has been
alternate heads with the same characters. Since we have been releasing
the pilots as characters, we prefer to stick with that model and
systematically work our way around to pilots who have yet to see a
release. We intuit that fans of the pilots will eventually want to see
them all for display, so a pack that would contain multiple head/helmets
would not only add extra cost, it ultimately would not solve the long-term
desire of providing all of the pilots from the various key battles since
bodies would still be lacking.
2. Here's a question we'd never thought we'd ask in a post-Batman world-- when can we expect snow suit versions of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker?
A2. We are delighted to be bringing some alternate forms of these characters
to the line! Look for both of them to find their way into the 2010 Clone
Wars basic figure lineup.
3. A while ago, a picture got out showing a HasbroToyShop.com Star Wars Stands pack with a new sheet of stickers for, presumably, 2008/2009 figures. Do you have a shot of the new sticker sheet's character names, and are the new stickers (and not the 2007 ones) available at the shop now? And a part II, when will we see "The Clone Wars" logo stands?
A3. There will be no Clone Wars logo stand released in a multi-pack. The new
sticker sheet is the same one that has been shipping for some time with
the stands with two foot pegs, the revision that was made available last
Fall. There has been no update since then and do not plan on re-releasing
stands since there is still a decent supply of this version. If/when these
get close to selling out we'll look at a new release. Incidentally, the
dual foot peg base was created with Battle Droids in mind. We spaced the
foot pegs apart at a solid distance to allow BDs (and Supers, and
Geonisians) to maintain a standing position on shelf. By pulling the legs
out a little wider, it keeps the joints tight and not loose. We had had
great success in getting our Separatist legions to remain upright and
looking spiffy in formation.

Clearance: Star Trek Movie
|
The DVDs aren't even out yet, but most big stores are done with Playmates' Star Trek movie line before series 2 hit. Over the weekend, we saw Target stores with the entire line for 30% off (and got reports of 75% off from our readers), plus we personally spotted some carded 3 3/4-inch figures at a Wal-Mart for a mere $0.75 each. Happy hunting!

Shirts: Portal Video Screen Shirt, Not a Hoax Apparently

Over the weekend numerous people directed us to the Interactive Portal Shirt. Yes, from the game. Go watch the video, it's an interesting and very expensive $200 gag-- involving LCD screens, shirts, and tiny little cameras.

Review: PSP Thexder Neo
|
Since the title was released worldwide on the PSN service, pretty much anybody can give it a whirl now. As part of the Square-Enix family, the formerly GameArts game Thexder Neo is an upgrade of the original which, in the USA, was only a PC release. In it, you pilot a little robot that's a cross between a design from Gundam and Macross, but what really matters is that you have a big cool robot you can transform at will and then shoot things with your targeting laser beam. First Wii Castlevania: The Adventure Rebirth Shots in Famitsu
|
Not ordinarily known as one of the Belmont clan's finer adventures, the first GameBoy Castlevania title is getting the 16-bit overhaul courtesy of Capcom. If the dirt from Famitsu by way of Joystiq is correct, it's going to be about $10 and may be available in Japan this month. It would stand to reason they might try to get it out in the USA in time for Halloween, although since it's on a Saturday maybe they'll miss it. Review: Xbox 360 Live Arcade Splosion Man

The great thing about this whole downloadable game revolution is that developers are doing creative games like Splosion Man. Also new are these Professor Layton plushies from Japan. Five styles in various sizes are available, and since little (nothing?) is out in the Western market, it's worth a look at the importers we'd say.

DC Universe Infinite Heroes Public Enemies Out at Target
|
After a chunky first year, Mattel comes back with new 3- and 6-packs based on the Public Enemies direct-to-DVD movie with enhanced articulation releases of Batman, Superman, Power Girl, and numerous other characters. Each of the two 3-packs are about $17.99 and the 6-pack is $34.99. There's some overlap, but they're quality figures and a definite improvement over the previous product.

Music Twofer: New Blog, Old Futurist
|
First up: 1up.com launched Chiptuned, a music blog devoted to game soundtracks! It's a specific interest, but one we don't see covered much. Well worth a look.
Also, fans of Shellac may enjoy this link which may or may not have The Futurist at it. It's an essentially unreleased album, so odds are you've never heard it. The future may belong to analog purists, but for you digital fans out there, this is worth a look.

Street Fighter IV Cheaper, SSFIV News
|
At Kotaku and pretty much everywhere else is a blurb on the upgrades expected in the Street Fighter IV sequel-- like having all the characters unlocked from the get-go, plus Seth being a bigger pain to kill.
Meanwhile, Target stores have the Xbox 360 version on clearance. We've seen it as low as $9.98, so check your local stores for leftover stock. It's totally worth ten bucks, and you'll want to get a good arcade stick to go with it.

Meet Mudflap and Skids Screech and Skids!

G1 never ends! Check out these Japanese exclusive figures based on the original Skids mold, but in colors inspired by last summer's big movie and this week's big DVD title. They're pretty swell. (And they come with tiny scooters.)

Here's a surprise-- Sid Meier has started up a Facebook page for Civilization Network, a Facebook-specific version of his long-running franchise. Kiss your significant others goodbye, and follow the link to stalk him and be a beta tester.
To steal the final paragraph: "Wešll offer a closed beta of the game soon, so stay tuned for details on how you can sign-up to participate. The full game will launch in 2010. Masterpiece Grimlock to hit USA in 2010?

Hasbro has basically avoided the issue of the US release of Masterpiece Grimlock for a few months now, but it seems the Action Figure Insider has some dirt! (Spoiler alert: it's coming in 2010.)
Also exciting news is that Raving Toy Maniac got the scoop that Transformers: Animated Arcee and Cybertronian Ratchet are coming in Spring 2010.

QSR PSA: Blocky Spongebob Squarepants at Burger King
|
At lunch today we got a nerdy Spongebob Squarepants figure (pictured) which came in a box sort of like the Mighty Muggs line. There are several blocky figures and we have to say, we're impressed. Good job, Burger King-- the urban vinyl style translates well do kid's meal toys, surprisingly.

Toki to Go Ape Spit Again
|
Here's something we never thought we'd write-- an HD remake of Toki is coming. Thank French devs Golgoth Studio, who we must say we've never heard of. They have art, video, and some notes on the new endeavor. It seems like they took the arcade original and redrew it, which is pretty much what you'd want with Toki if you're one of its legion of fans, which is small.

Star Trek 3 3/4-Inch Movie Series 2 Now Exclusive
|
The second series of movie Star Trek action figures are now a shared exclusive between Entertainment Earth and another partner that we're not at liberty to announce, but we do know they won't be available at mass retailers like Toys "R" Us, Target, or Wal-Mart. So to reiterate: these 10 figures, including Keenser, Space Sulu, and Sarek, are not coming to your usual retail channels. Future waves are presently an unknown but this doesn't sound like what happens before Wave 3 gets made usually.

TMNT Bought by Nickelodeon, So What Does This Mean?
|
For the seemingly small price of $60 million, Viacom/Nickelodeon bought the entire Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchse. Plans already call for a new cartoon, and rumors call for it to be on tap with the 1980s show. People are excited, which makes us think they haven't seen the 1980s show recently. But really, this is a pretty fantastic story of a couple of guys going from their garage to the big cash-in, although Eastman kinda was out for a while now.
So how does the future look for this over 25-year-old franchise? The blog Ninja Pizza has a good Q&A on it, exploring some of the knowns, unknowns, and licensing deals.

Spanning from the original Power of the Force series of 1995 to the latest of The Legacy Collection, it's almost like a history lesson! Nintendo Wii Downloads This Week, Excitebike to Follow
|
Your WiiWare games this week are Tales of Monkey Island: Chapter 3: Lair of the Leviathan, a $10/1,000 points entry in the series, plus Ghost Mansion Party for the same price. It's some sort of board game/minigame hybrid. Sounds potentially fun.
Virtual Console fans, it's Golden Axe (Arcade) for $9/900 points. It's also Zombies Ate My Neighbors for $8/800 points, the Super NES version.
Finally, some video got out of a high-def lo-fi remake of Excitebike called Excitebike World Rally.

Nintendo DSi Downloads This Week: Domo Domo Domo, SIEEX2 Paddle Compatibility
|
Got a DSi? You can snag SUDOKU for $2/200 points, it's from EA, and makes like fifty such games on the handheld. Nintendo released the board game PictureBook Games: The Royal Bluff for $5/500 points, which sounds slightly more promising.
Also! We got a copy of Space Invaders Extreme 2 to review. We're happy to report that the American release of the game is indeed compatible with the Japanese spinner/dial controller, which you can still get if you're lucky/have money. It works as well as you should expect it to.

Transformers Universe Legends Toys to be Repainted as ROTF Toys

We rarely cover a lot of Revenge of the Fallen movie toys but this was simply too good to ignore. TFW2005 has shots up of some harder-to-get Legends toys being repainted for the movie line. Oh note: Wheelie in black as "Shadow Striker" and Rodimus in blue and red as "Smokescreen." We're sold. Shadow Striker is our new favorite thing since the last one.

Japanese Analog Sega Saturn Pads Found, Sale

Odds are you aren't, so check out this Japanese find at NCS which shows the multi-colored version of the controller. They have a few of them for under $27. Controllers are region-free, so it might be worth a snag-- it's a damn fine controller.

First Castlevania: The Adventure ReBirth Video, Capcom vs. Tatsunoko Art, Final Fantasy Pre-Order Bonuses Revealed
|
"ReBirth" may be the best name, as this game seems to be a completely reworked new game based loosely on the GameBoy originals. 1up.com has some stunning videos of gameplay which reveal fireball whips, staircases, and quasi-16-bit graphics. It's gorgeous. It came out in Japan this week for 1,000 Wii points, and there's no confirmed US release date. Looking at the videos, there's also precious little Japanese in the game, so really, what's the deal Nintendo? Why don't we have this already?
And this picture got released from Capcom, too. Capcom vs. Tatsunoko is scheduled for a North American release on January 26, 2010.
Finally, Square-Enix wrote in to tell us the pre-order bonuses for Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers, some of which aren't worth repeating for your eyes. Collector-minded types will be most interested in Best Buy's exclusive soundtrack CD sampler, we expect, as it seems to be the best of them. Amazon has a calendar. Go for the CD.

'Splosion Man gets Title Update, Avatar Awards

From Twisted Pixel: "We have a new title update that finally enables avatar awards, as well as contains fixes for the online multiplayer issues that some players were having. We also have some cool new promotions including an Omaha Sweepsteaks!"
So there's a shirt (pictured), a hoodie, a ringer, and a dress you can grab by getting the right achievement(s). We aren't sure what it is just yet, but hey, this is way better than actually paying for it. (And we would totally wear that shirt if it were made for us in real person sizes. Nice flask.)

Two New Games for the Xbox 360 Live Arcade Released

Xbox 360 owners have a trio of new games to grab this week. They are:
- Rainbow Islands: Towering Adventure, a remake of the arcade classic which was originally a sequel to Bubble Bobble. It's 800 points/$10, and you can apparently play as your avatar, in an interesting twist.
- Also for the same price is Inferno Pool, for those of you who find Lunar Pool a little too quaint.

Sega Zippos Expensive, Retro
|
In the 1990s, America's youth was preoccupied with fire and Sega. It only makes sense to combine these things, as Zippo has, although we're not sure we agree with the $150+ price tags. Saturn and Mega Drive (Genesis) versions are on tap, based on the Japanese console deco.

We have no specific details as to the nature of the offer, but rest assured we'll share it as soon as EE posts the news.
Apparently in development are Revenge of the Fallen and Star Trek 2009 movie edition Xbox bundles with their respective films and other goodies. Check out Videogamer.com for some pictures and the scoop.

Nintendo DSi goes XL (or LL in Japan)
|
In 2004, Nintendo introduced the Nintendo DS to a confused marketplace-- the GameBoy Advance was doing fine and nobody seemed to get why a portable needs two screens. Developers were a little slow coming up with a great game, but several years and hardware revisions later... we're back at a larger design. Coming to the USA in 2010, the Nintendo DSi XL is about the physical mass of the original release with the DSi functionality and larger screens. So we're curious to get one.
North American prices have not been nailed down, but Japanese gamers are expected to pay the equivalent of $200 US. Which is kinda a lot, given the original system was like $180 in 2005 and this doesn't even have the GBA slot. Joystiq and other sites have more dirt.
